Become a Google power searcher: You may already be familiar with some shortcuts for Google Search, like using the search box as a calculator or finding local movie showtimes by typing [movies] and your zip code. But there are many more tips, tricks and tactics you can use to find exactly what you’re looking for, when you most need it.

Today, we’ve opened registration for Power Searching with Google, a free, online, community-based course showcasing these techniques and how you can use them to solve everyday problems. Our course is aimed at empowering you to find what you need faster, no matter how you currently use search. For example, did you know that you can search for and read pages written in languages you’ve never even studied? Identify the location of a picture your friend took during his vacation a few months ago? How about finally identifying that green-covered book about gardening that you’ve been trying to track down for years? You can learn all this and more over six 50-minute classes.

Lessons will be released daily starting on July 10, 2012, and you can take them according to your own schedule during a two-week window, alongside a worldwide community. The lessons include interactive activities to practice new skills, and many opportunities to connect with others using Google tools such as Google Groups, Moderator and Google+, including Hangouts on Air, where world-renowned search experts will answer your questions on how search works. Googlers will also be on hand during the course period to help and answer your questions in case you get stuck.

Power Searching with Google blends the MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) learning format pioneered by Stanford and MIT with our social and communication tools to create what we hope is a true community learning experience.

Google+ for Android: polish and performance: We continue to work toward a simpler, more beautiful Google, and today we're accelerating these efforts with a new Google+ app for Android phones. The update includes lots of highly-requested features—like the ability to start a hangout on the go, and to edit posts inline—as well as a stream that celebrates the rich content shared across Google+. In all cases we're building for a mobile future, and we're excited about what's ahead.

Start a hangout from anywhere, and ring the folks that matter most

With Hangouts we want to help people connect face-to-face-to-face—at any time, from anywhere. Of course, there's really only one device that's always by your side—your phone—so we've invested in mobile hangouts since early on. Today we're adding another important feature to the mix: the ability to start a hangout directly from your mobile device.

To get started, tap “Hangout” in the (new) navigation ribbon, add some friends and tap “Start.” We'll ring their phones (if you want), and if someone misses the hangout, they can ring you back with a single tap.

Share your favorites, and feel awesome afterward

When you share with your circles, we owe you an experience that's both intimate and immersive. Your time and your relationships are precious, after all, so your posts should make you feel proud. Today's new Android app takes this to heart, with full-screen media in the stream, conversations that fade into view and instantly-touchable actions like +1.

Do more, in less time

We think you’ll find today’s app nicer to look at, but we’re also making it easier to use. Improvements include:

A navigation ribbon that slides in and out, providing quick access to just about everything
The ability to download photos directly from Google+, and turn them into wallpaper
The chance to edit posts inline, in case you make any mistakes while on the go

View photos of the world with the Panoramio App on your Google TV: I came across the geo-tagged photos from Panoramio a while ago when I was looking up a place on the Google Maps. They triggered my interest and I immediately visited Panoramio’s website to view more photos. I searched for any place that came to my mind and saw amazing pictures taken by photographers who had visited those places and shared them on Panoramio. With Google TV and the possibilities it provides, I thought it would be cool to have an app to browse photos from Panoramio right on my TV.

So I made one!

We’re excited that millions of people around the world use Chrome as their primary browser and we want to keep improving that experience. Today, we're introducing Chrome for Android Beta, which brings many of the things you’ve come to love about Chrome to your Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich phone or tablet. Like the desktop version, Chrome for Android Beta is focused on speed and simplicity, but it also features seamless sign-in and sync so you can take your personalized web browsing experience with you wherever you go, across devices.

Speed

With Chrome for Android, you can search, navigate and browse fast—Chrome fast. You can scroll through web pages as quickly as you can flick your finger. When searching, your top search results are loaded in the background as you type so pages appear instantly. And of course, both search and navigation can all be done quickly from the Chrome omnibox.

Simplicity

Chrome for Android is designed from the ground up for mobile devices. We reimagined tabs so they fit just as naturally on a small-screen phone as they do on a larger screen tablet. You can flip or swipe between an unlimited number of tabs using intuitive gestures, as if you’re holding a deck of cards in the palm of your hands, each one a new window to the web.

On Google News, the average reader of political news has read 20 articles about politics in the last six months. Where do you stand?

Starting today, in the U.S. edition of Google News, you can see how voracious a news reader you are by earning Google News badges as you read articles about your favorite topics. The more you read, the higher level badge you’ll receive, starting with Bronze, then moving up the ladder to Silver, Gold, Platinum and finally, Ultimate.

We have more than 500 badges available, so no matter what kind of news you’re into, there’s a badge out there for you. Here’s a taste:

Your badges are private by default, but if you want, you can share your badges with your friends. Tell them about your news interests, display your expertise, start a conversation or just plain brag about how well-read you are. You can also add custom sections by hovering on a badge and clicking “add section” to read more about your favorite topics. To get started with badges, visit Google News from a signed-in account with web history enabled and then visit this page on our Help Center for instructions.

This is just the first step—the bronze release, if you will—of Google News badges. Once we see how badges are used and shared, we look forward to taking this feature to the next level.

In the spirit of continually trying to improve Google News, we have heard loud and clear from the many of you who asked us to separate our Sci/Tech section into two distinct sections. We are happy to report that we have now done this for all English editions, with more languages coming soon. We also combined some personalization settings from the “News for you” and News Settings menu into one handy sidebar at the top right corner of the home page, so you can easily tell us what you want to read on your Google News.

Ride on Delhi and Ahmedabad buses with Google Maps: "More people, in our metro cities, use local bus services to commute than any other transport network/medium. Inspite of this, the availability and dissemination of route and schedule information of these service have tremendous scope for improvement. Furthering our goal of expanding transit coverage of Indian cities, we are glad to announce the addition of DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation) and AMTS (Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Services) bus services to Google Transit. These cities join Mumbai, Bangalore and Pune bus services that are already available apart from 450 cities globally.

How to make the best use of Google Transit

Not only is it very easy to plan your trip, but you can also find a trip that involves a) fewer transfers b) less walking or c) uses a particular type of transit service (trains or buses), using Google Transit

Search for information to reach from Place A to B on Google Maps, the results will show a map with the possible route and driving directions for the commuter
Choose the transit option by clicking the train icon (next to the car icon)
Commuters would get first hand information on best available multi-modal routes and step by step directions including frequency, and travel duration for each leg of the trip in text and on the map.
You can also refine the trip options by clicking on the “Show Options” link that appear below destination point B field

Below is one example. You are visiting a friend who stays in Mayur Vihar phase I in Delhi and you would like to visit Red Fort using the bus.

Your friend instead suggests taking Delhi Metro to go to Red Fort and bus for the return journey. Its very easy to plan this using Google Transit, simply choose the preferred transit service to “Subway” and hit “ Get Directions” !

So next time when you want to plan your trip whether from New Delhi Railway Station to Vasant Kunj or from Ahmedabad railway station to IIM, explore all the public transport options using Google Transit and adopt an environment friendly way to commute.

Few Media reports claimed that the world cup trophy given to Indian Cricket team
Was a fake and that the original was lying with the customs in Mumbai over non-payment of duties.

After this ICC issued a statement read as follows –
'Contrary to some erroneous and mischievous media reports, the ICC can confirm that the trophy presented to India at Wankhede Stadium on Saturday was the original ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 trophy and the one that was always intended to be presented to the winner of the event

ICC governing body said that 'The trophy seized by Mumbai customs is the promotional, perpetual trophy which remains in the keeping of ICC at its headquarters in Dubai.

It carries the generic ICC corporate logo rather than the logo specific to the 2011 event. That trophy will be reclaimed on Monday and will travel back to Dubai with ICC staff as was always intended

Customs department said that Cup was with them for non-payment of duty of 35 per cent of the original value.

'We will release it after payment of 35 per cent customs duty after its valuation,' they told PTI.

ICC was supposed to pay Rs.22 Lakh customs duty for the trophy but they did not pay it and trophy was in the possession of the customs department.

In this world cup ICC got tax exemption of Rs.45 crore, made the profits of more than Rs.600 Crore.

Still ICC did not pay customs duty and saved money.

Google’s Educational Internet Bus starts its tour of Uttar Pradesh: "Having traveled across South India, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat, the Google Internet Bus continues to add more miles and smiles as it enters the state of Uttar Pradesh. Its first stop will be Lucknow, followed by various towns and cities across U.P.

The Internet Bus is a custom designed mobile bus, which takes the internet experience to people in their preferred language. The main aim is to educate people about the Internet and how it may be beneficial to their lives.

Commenting on the successful run of the Google Internet Bus project, Srikanth Belwadi, Product Manager, Google India said, 'The Internet is a strong medium of knowledge. Our attempt through the Internet Bus is to spread awareness of this medium and its relevance in our daily life.'

The Internet Bus has enjoyed good success during its previous legs and has touched the lives of more than 12,00,000 Indians across 110 towns stopping at over 1000 locations. Surveys have indicated that over 30% of our visitors have gone online for the first time after visiting the Internet Bus and over 50% of our visitors have told at least five people about the benefits of the Internet.

Google aims to replicate the success of this project in Uttar Pradesh by providing people with a platform to experience the Internet.

Users across India will be able to follow the bus through its journey, see pictures and videos and join online communities by simply visiting www.google.co.in/internetbus.

Has anyone you know ever lost control of an email account and inadvertently sent spam—or worse—to their friends and family? There are plenty of examples (like the classic 'Mugged in London' scam) that demonstrate why it's important to take steps to help secure your activities online. Your Gmail account, your photos, your private documents—if you reuse the same password on multiple sites and one of those sites gets hacked, or your password is conned out of you directly through a phishing scam, it can be used to access some of your most closely-held information.

Most of us are used to entrusting our information to a password, but we know that some of you are looking for something stronger. As we announced to our Google Apps customers a few months ago, we've developed an advanced opt-in security feature called 2-step verification that makes your Google Account significantly more secure by helping to verify that you're the real owner of your account. Now it's time to offer the same advanced protection to all of our users.

2-step verification requires two independent factors for authentication, much like you might see on your banking website: your password, plus a code obtained using your phone. Over the next few days, you'll see a new link on your Account Settings page that looks like this:

Take your time to carefully set up 2-step verification—we expect it may take up to 15 minutes to enroll. A user-friendly set-up wizard will guide you through the process, including setting up a backup phone and creating backup codes in case you lose access to your primary phone. Once you enable 2-step verification, you'll see an extra page that prompts you for a code when you sign in to your account. After entering your password, Google will call you with the code, send you an SMS message or give you the choice to generate the code for yourself using a mobile application on your Android, BlackBerry or iPhone device. The choice is up to you. When you enter this code after correctly submitting your password we'll have a pretty good idea that the person signing in is actually you.

It's an extra step, but it's one that significantly improves the security of your Google Account because it requires the powerful combination of both something you know—your username and password—and something that only you should have—your phone. A hacker would need access to both of these factors to gain access to your account. If you like, you can always choose a 'Remember verification for this computer for 30 days' option, and you won't need to re-enter a code for another 30 days. You can also set up one-time application-specific passwords to sign in to your account from non-browser based applications that are designed to only ask for a password, and cannot prompt for the code.
