We spend more and more of our everyday lives in what Marc Augé calls non-places – homogenous, but bland places of transit. This anthology addresses the representations of non-places in literature, culture and media, and critiques and re-actualizes Augé’s work twenty years after its initial formulation.

The anthology contains 17 articles engaged directly in the application, retrofitting and broadening of the concept of the non-place to a range of literary and media texts, as well as the merging of this concept to other theoretical concepts by e.g. Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze, Alain Badiou and Zygmunt Bauman.

Authors, film-makers and topics discussed include Franz Kafka, Jacques Tati, Anders Bodelsen, Lars von Trier, Douglas Coupland, Rodrigo Plá, Ida Hattemer-Higgins, Steven Spielberg, Moritz von Uslar, Nicolas Winding Refn, concentration camp witness literature, film locations in Northern Jutland, and many others.

This anthology is the seventh publication in the IRGiC series and it springs from a research seminar held at Aalborg University in May 2013: “Non-Place in Literature, Media and Culture”.

The migration of Blaga’s universalist, even centralist poems from Romanian of the first third of the 20th C. into American of the first fifth of the 21st C. illustrates the uses of Pierre Joris’s nomadic methods. My translations of Blaga read well for a teenage audience whose only exposure to literature consists of Twilight series novels. While I believe my translations are true to the content of the originals, I equally believe that such a readership would have been unthinkable for the originals – not because the Gothic genre did not exist or appeal to young Romanians in the 1930s, but rather because Blaga’s poetry was never framed or received in such a manner. Re-contextualized in the American vernacular of the 21st C. this readership, however, given a chance of exposure to Blaga, would see him as belonging to the lineage of Poe, Stoker and other Gothic or horror authors.

Douglas Coupland is nominally a Canadian author, though he was born overseas on a NATO base in what was then West Germany. He has also subsequently spent considerable time in countries other than the one he is a citizen of, including the US, Japan and various European locations.
In Coupland’s first novel Generation X, the narrator casually observes, speaking of the dating patterns and friendships of the three youthful protagonists, that nowadays everyone and everything seems to be either from nowhere or from Hell. The narrator invites the reader to muse on whether these two points of origin are really that different from one another…
In my paper I examine the literary topography of Coupland’s story worlds in Generation X and more recent novels. The tension between presence and absence in this topography is palpable, and several Coupland plots involve characters trying to cope with living in a world consisting nearly entirely of non-places. In such a ‘Life After God’ (the title of a short story collection by Douglas Coupland) strategies for replenishment of meaning and belonging can be hard to come by – yet every Coupland story offers up hope for such strategies succeeding. Does this make Coupland a post-ironic, or post-cynical writer? And what role does place play in bolstering the hope of the characters?

This article examines the dynamics between old and new ways in Irish music, using terms from Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of the fields of cultural production, such as position taking, gatekeeping and consecration.

The traditional unaccompanied song in Gaelic nowadays known as sean-nós, or the old style, is not the most commercially viable type of music in an age with little patience for longish laments without vibrant beats or obscene lyrics. What then might be the sean-nua, or new style that is more befitting for today’s audience? Paradoxically the answer might lie in looking backward while at the same time looking forward to create a hybrid, glocal sean-nós-nua.
Some of Ireland’s biggest names in contemporary popular music have been enamoured of the idea of crossing old with new, creating a hybrid form that would at once contain the wisdom of the old style and yet yield some authority in the marketplace. One such artist is Van Morrison, another is Sinead O’Connor who attempted a come-back with an album titled Sean Nós Nua, on which she, self-confessedly, ‘sexed-up’ traditional Irish songs, some sung in Gaelic, much as Van Morrison had done two decades earlier with his collaboration with the Chieftains, Irish Heartbeat.

In this article I propose to look specifically at examples from these two albums where the vocal stylings of these singers resemble the sean-nós in its canonical meaning, yet are examples of boundaries of Irish time and place being transcended in the songs’ hybrid musical style, lending new meaning to both sean-nós and nua. In the process of fusing old and new, wisdom and authority, I propose that Irish popular music must become glocal to succeed in the marketplace, given today’s global yet specialized economy of distribution, and in the critical field of reception, given the currently prevalent preference for hybridity and authenticity.
