I am happy to report that we’re down to a short list of items remaining before we can officially begin alpha testing vBulletin 4.0, which I expect to start within a few weeks. Alpha testing will occur in phases, with the Forum released first, then followed shortly thereafter by the full Suite.

The alpha release is the earliest point at which vBulletin is installable, and its purpose is to identify issues on a wide variety of environments as early as possible. To that end, alpha testers are those with a long history using vBulletin and who have experience integrating plugins, styles, right-to-left text rendering, and other factors that are likely to reveal bugs.

Additionally, throughout both the alpha and beta releases, we are using a dedicated internal QA team, as well as external QA resources, to help us find and fix bugs as early in the process as possible.

As we get closer to gold release, we’ll announce the official details of licensing, pricing and discounts.

In case you didn’t hear of the vBulletin Leak on vBulletin.com, here is a link for that. In a nutshell, the forum permissions were out of wack for 10 minuties one day and someone went in and took screenshots of the admin forums and posted them online. In these screenshots you’ll see some info on the new pricing setup. No renewal fee’s, but you will have to pay for major upgrades, like vb 3.0 to vb 4.0 as well as no more free support tickets.

vBulletin 3.8.2 is a maintenance release for the vBulletin 3.8 series, which addresses various issues found since 3.8.1 was releases. Maintenance releases follow our scheduled release policy.

Some of the issues fixed include:

• Social group dicussion email notifications don’t always work (27226)
• Access masks not reset properly with paid subscriptions (27385)
• Friend requests received by users that are in “Tachy Goes to Coventry” (27213)
• Profile field category privacy ignored in “About Me” tab (27453)
• BB code case maintained when not parsed (27433)
• External.php feeds don’t handle thread]/post BB code properly (27276)
• Avatars show up in social groups/visitor messages when users don’t have permission (27369)

Social Group Subscriptions Improved

In 3.8.1, social group subscriptions were disabled because of confusion over the functionality they provided. In 3.8.2, they have been improved and re-enabled. When subscribing to a group, you can now choose to receive a daily or weekly digest of the discussions that happen within that group. You can still choose to not receive any email notifications when subscribing to a group.

Group subscriptions which were created before 3.8.2 will not automatically send email notifications. These users can modify their existing subscriptions or resubscribe to enable email notification.

Upgrading from Previous Versions

3.8.2 is a maintenance release. We recommend that all customers running prior versions of vBulletin 3.8 upgrade to benefit from bug fixes and stability improvements.

PHP and MySQL Requirements

Please note that vBulletin 3.8.x requires at least PHP 4.3.3 and MySQL 4.0.16 or later.

However, we recommend that vBulletin 3.8.x is run on PHP 5.2.9 with APC (or a similar opcode cache) and MySQL 5.1.32 for best performance and stability.

End of Life for PHP 4

PHP 4 has now reached its end of life. We strongly recommend that customers update their servers to PHP 5.2.9 if they are still running PHP 4. vBulletin 3.8.x supports PHP 5 without any problems, though you may need to disable strict mode for MySQL, see here on how to enable ‘force_sql_mode’.

Note: We will continue to support PHP 4 in the vBulletin 3 series.

This is our first release candidate available to all users. We anticipate two more iterations before 3.3.0 GOLD, including RC1 and RC2. When we are certain it is bullet proof, the vBSEO 3.3.0 GOLD final release will follow.

Important: vBSEO 3.3.0 requires an update to your .htaccess file.

IMPORTANT: If you are upgrading from a previous vBSEO version, please note down your selected URL preset *before* upgrading.

After the upgrade, you *must* re-select your preset and click on “load preset” to have all the new URL types conform to your preset.

If you have custom URLs, you must manually go through each new URL type (has a “NEW” tag in red) and enter a custom URL that matches your format. That’s why we strongly suggest using the provided presets as opposed to customizing URLs on your own. Presets will ensure your URL structure is always consistent, even after upgrades that may include new URL types.

I saw a new release in the Pre-Release forums but with the baby on the way I’ve just been to busy to mess with it. I’ve been picking up some great clients the last month, several have had more than one forum to work on, and as always, I suggested adding vBSEO to all their forums and every one of them added it. I’m interested in the new SEO features, but I will continue to use vBSEO – The Total SEO Package.

Do you have hundreds of PLR articles gathering dust on your hard drive?

Does it help to have unique content? Of course! Does it help if you rewrite PLR at least a little before using it? Absolutely! But it’s not doing you a damn bit of good sitting on your hard drive “waiting” for you to rewrite it now is it?

Why not JUST GET IT GOING?

Get it online fast, get it working for you RIGHT NOW, then go back and rework a little at a time if you want. Or just sprinkle in new content later that’s been modified or written from scratch. Heck, put up the unedited stuff, then spin it and put up the spun stuff too!

If you’re constantly waiting until you “do this”, “do that”, or “get it just right” you’ll never make a dime!

Let me show you just how true this is… Here’s a site that was put online August 7th, 2008. (This is a brand new domain too.) Look how often the Google spider has visited as of yesterday August 26th, 2008.

It has 38 posts published, 62 scheduled.

And since WordPress tells MANY sites every time you publish new content, those sites will come running every time too!

Now you want to know what will get you in trouble? If you scrape RSS feeds and someone complains to Google. Or you steal someone else’s content and they complain. Even if you violate the TOS of an article directory by publishing more than they “allow”… if they complain to Google then your site can – and usually will – get banned.

If you buy PLR content though, you’re not stealing or scraping anything! And THATS exactly why PLR has gotten so popular over the last few years!

People quickly found that buying PLR isn’t the last step though. They have to actually DO SOMETHING with it before it can start earning them money. And one of the easiest things to do is simply build a website with the PLR articles, right?

But that’s when most of us discovered there’s work in them there sites. Sure you can simply take a package of 50 PLR articles and create a site in one day, with everything all published at once. But that only “calls” the search engines ONCE! If you want the spiders to keep coming back regularly, you have to either publish more content or you have to work your tail off promoting the site.

And the promotion never ends.

If you stop promoting a static site, you WILL stop getting spider activity and eventually traffic too. And without traffic, you can’t earn any money.

Don’t get me wrong on this: ALL websites will do better with at least the minimum amount of promotion. But you actually CAN have successful sites which you don’t lift a finger to promote. Read on…

This is where WordPress shines. Using this ingenious, FREE software, you can publish a website that will get CONSTANT search engine attention and CONSTANT traffic. But only IF you keep adding new content in a steady stream.

Now, WordPress has a built in feature which allows you to schedule posts to be published on a future date. So if you wanted to take a week long vacation without your site suffering from the lack of attention, you could pre-load content to “publish” each and every day, even though you’re not personally working while you’re on vacation.

This future dating feature in WordPress can be a godsend. BUT… have you ever tried building a website that you can just set and forget? For months? Or maybe even years? If you sit down and pre-load hundreds of articles at once, you can actually walk away and not touch the site for a long time to come. But it will continue getting search engine attention, traffic, and income, because the site is publishing new material regularly.

If you’ve ever tried this yourself you already know what I’m going to say: That sucks!

Don’t get me wrong, the technique is awesome and the results are too, but actually pre-loading hundreds of articles onto a site at once – manually – is time consuming, repetitive, and boring!

Most people quit before they’ve gotten a quarter of the way through!

Want to save money? Evaluate all of your services and see what changes you can make. You can still have a manicured lawn and family entertainment minus the high cost.

Branding Your Twitter Profile

Twitter profiles are a window into the life and business of each user. Without a proper and effective profile, jobs can be lost, money can be washed down the drain and clients can be swayed to another profile that provides more of what they are looking for. A Twitter profile is just like a marketing campaign for a company. A proper Twitter profile should effectively provide a snapshot of your brand.

Twitter is just another tool to implement your marketing strategy on the web. As such, the same branding rules apply to your Twitter profile. Your profile does not just include the wording on your Twitter account, but also the background on your Twitter page. There are applications you can use to develop free backgrounds for your Twitter account if you are on a budget, but in order to properly brand yourself, spend the extra money and develop a personal background the same way you would for a website. It will pay dividends in the end.

Here are a few tips to follow when creating your profile on Twitter to help develop your brand.

• Be Consistent – Keep your message steady. If your business is about making the best athletic shoes on the market, make sure your Twitter profile falls right in line with it. As enticing as it might be to throw up a few pictures of you fishing with some friends, keep your message relevant.

• Add Pictures – Many people want to see actual pictures of who they are talking to, not avatars or logos. As tempting as it might be to put your company logo up as your profile picture, save your logo for your background and put a picture of you on the profile. • Frequently Update – When you have something new, make sure you update your profile. This lets people know your business is changing and growing. Your brand depends on it. Remember to keep it a consistent message, but also to keep it filled with fresh content.

• Value Time – Take your time. Developing your brand on a new social media tool can be exciting and a lot of fun, but don’t let the excitement go to your head. Take your time and if you feel yourself getting frustrated, take a 5-minute break and go grab some coffee or a soda. If you take your time, you will be able to get out exactly what you want to say. You won’t need to go back and change your message 10 minutes after you have published it because you left something out or didn’t get your point across.

Branding your business took time, possibly even months. Give your Twitter profile the same attention you did to the initial branding efforts and it will pay off. Follow these steps and you will have a good understanding of how to use your Twitter profile to brand your business properly and effectively.

What data is available to Internet Brands/Jelsoft?

Google’s report to us consists of an aggregate (not site-specific) overview of the whole program, including impressions, clicks and total revenue generated from all sites who have joined via the vBulletin.com members area. This report does not identify any of this data on the basis of any individual site.

In addition to the aggregate report, Google provides an API that makes it possible to access the site-specific statistical information that is available to you via the Google AdSense reporting pages. Specifically, information includes the amount of revenue generated, the number of advertising impressions and the number of clicks.

This information is automatically included in the standard Google API, but please be aware that if you look on your Google AdSense control panel, you will see that you always have the option to restrict access to this information. (We have inquired with Google whether it is possible to restrict the availability of site-specific data access, and they confirmed that the only way to do this is by using the opt-out process described below.)

The design of the Google API makes this information available to its partners with the intention of allowing partners to create enhanced reporting functionality within partner sites. For example, we could extend the members area to display the performance of your AdSense advertising, and utilize the information to offer advice and guidance on how best to improve your advertising yields. We have no immediate plans to implement features that use this API in this way; if or when we choose to use these features, we will be completely open about it.

vBulletin 3.8.0 is available immediately from the Members’ Area to all customers with active vBulletin licenses, and will be offered as the primary choice to those making new purchases. We recommend that all customers with active licenses upgrade to vBulletin 3.8.0.

Google AdSense Integration

vBulletin 3.8 features a control panel to allow you to quickly add Google AdSense advertising units to your forum and monetize your site traffic!

To get started, please visit the members’ area and either sign up for a new Google AdSense account or assign your existing account with vBulletin.com. Once you have linked your members area account to your Google AdSense account, all vBulletin downloads will include the advertising control panel. (It will not be included unless you do this.)

From the control panel, you can choose an advertising package that contains the amount and type of ads that you want to feature – and deploy it instantly with just a couple of clicks. The positions and ad unit types chosen for each package are designed to give the maximum possible revenue for your site. Text-based advertising units will automatically inherit the color schemes of any styles you have on your board. Should you wish to experiment with the different ad packages, you can change your mind on deployed package at any time, including the option to remove ads completely.

PHP and MySQL Requirements

vBulletin 3.8.0 requires at least PHP 4.3.3 and MySQL 4.0.16 (These are the same requirements as vBulletin 3.7), but we strongly recommend that all customers run PHP 5.2.8 with APC and MySQL 5.1.30 or later. Major performance benefits can be had by taking the recommended route rather than simply satisfying the required versions.

What is a ‘Gold’ Version?

When talking about software, the term ‘gold’ is not related to the color of the application. Rather, it refers to the practice of burning the final version of a software product to a CD-R so that it can be sent to a large scale CD press for large-scale distribution. It is used to indicate that the code is ready for deployment to customers. The official name of this new version is vBulletin 3.8.0.

Installing or Upgrading vBulletin

Anyone who has installed or upgraded any version of vBulletin 3 before will be familiar with the process, but for those who are new to the system, the vBulletin manual has all the details for installing and upgrading.

Template Changes

A large number of templates have been changed when compared with vBulletin 3.7.x. It will be necessary to revert affected customized templates or otherwise carefully integrate the changes into your custom versions or new features and existing functionality will be adversely affected. A complete list of the templates you have customized whose original version has been changed by the 3.8.0 upgrade is available within your Admin Control Panel after the upgrade is complete.

Bug Reports

As with any software, bugs will appear. If you find a problem that you believe to be a bug, please don’t post about it on the forums where the development team may never find your message, but instead use the dedicated bug tracker to make a report that can be tracked through to completion.

Before reporting a bug, please ensure you are able to reproduce the problem on a board using a default, uncustomized style with all plugins disabled.

I’ve been able to make a few bucks from our affiliate product posts on the vBulletinSetup wordpress blog in the past, but now it’s time for those posts to get their own website. I’ve had this domain for over a year and never really did anything with it. I always liked the look and had picked it up with extensions of making a great website with it. The Affiliate Marketing Blog will be my place for future product post and hopefully a place to share what I’m learning, what works and what doesn’t in the world of affiliate marketing. I’ve been using Commission Junction since I started vBSetup, but have never really used it to its fullest potential. I had also signed up for Click Bank shortly later but did absolutely nothing with it, had looked in the marketplace but never even placed a link. I mentioned the posts I’ve made on this forum, here’s a few:

If I make a post on the new blog, I’ll try to give a short post here with a link to the original, it just depends on how busy I am at the time.
