Veeam Enables Dramatically Better RPOs with Backup from Storage Snapshots

Veeam® Software, innovative provider of backup, replication and virtualization management solutions for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V, today announced that it will enable backup from SAN snapshots supporting HP StoreVirtual Storage and HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage. This new capability is included in Veeam Backup & Replication™ v7, which was also announced today in a companion release. Backup from Storage Snapshots dramatically improves recovery point objectives (RPOs) of VMware backup and significantly reduces the impact of backup activities on the production environment.

Dramatically Better RPO

Storage snapshots are an ideal source of backup because they have no impact on production workloads. However, storage snapshots are not true backups, because if the SAN fails, the snapshots are lost along with the SAN. For true backup, the data must be moved to another storage device. Until now, there have been no convenient, robust tools to perform backup using storage snapshots. Veeam Backup & Replication v7 makes the entire process easy to use, more streamlined and 20 times faster than competitive solutions, creating true backups and replicas from which IT can restore if the SAN has completely melted down.

Developed by and exclusive to Veeam, Backup from Storage Snapshots minimizes the impact on virtual machines (VMs) by enabling a backup job to keep a VM snapshot for only a brief moment, resulting in instant VM snapshot commit. Unlike existing snapshot backup solutions, Veeam leverages VMware changed block tracking (CBT) to reduce backup time dramatically for incremental backups.

Consequently, customers can create backups from storage snapshots up to 20 times faster than with the competition, thanks to VMware CBT, instant datastore mount and other techniques developed by and exclusive to Veeam. As a result, organizations no longer need to rely on daily backups alone for I/O intensive workloads. IT admins can make as many backups and replicas as often as they like, from several times a day to once every 15 minutes, including during business hours (which dramatically improves RPO), with little to no impact to the production environment.

“’Recovery nirvana’ would be a blend of the strengths of backup software (such as centralized management, scheduling and reporting) and the speed, scale and efficiency of platform-based snapshots that are assisted by metadata cues from the application and OS and / or hypervisor,” writes David Russell, VP Distinguished Analyst at Gartner.

The announcement of this new capability builds on last year’s release of Veeam Explorer for SAN Snapshots, which enables the recovery of VMs and individual items directly from periodic SAN snapshots, allowing for a greatly improved recovery time objective (RTO) for recoveries from SAN snapshots.

U.S. Patent No. 8,332,689 B2 covers technology including support for Instant VM Recovery™, which enables Veeam Backup & Replication to recover a failed virtual machine (VM) in as little as two minutes by starting up and running a VM directly from the backup. With Instant VM Recovery, users lose no time waiting for IT administrators to provision storage, extract the backup and copy it to production. Veeam Software, innovative provider of backup, replication and virtualization management solutions for Windows Server Hyper-V and VMware, today announced the immediate availability of Veeam Management Pack™ (MP) v6 for VMware, which gives large to mid-sized IT organizations that use Microsoft System Center additional powerful forecasting and planning capabilities to better manage VMware environments.
Veeam MP extends System Center with deep VMware monitoring, management and capacity planning and provides a unified view from a single console of both physical and virtual infrastructures and applications. Specifically, Veeam MP extends Microsoft System Center to:
- Gain deep visibility into the VMware infrastructure, including virtual machines, VMware vSphere and the resources on which they run;
- Plan effectively for future capacity needs;
- Solve problems faster to meet service level requirements; and
- Achieve continuous improvement in datacenter efficiency.
This new release of Veeam MP includes new capacity planning reports for VMware on host failure modeling, performance forecasts for datastores, performance forecasts for vSphere clusters, and VM capacity prediction. These reports bring potential capacity issues to IT’s attention long before they cause problems. They also include powerful, what-if modeling to help IT see how specific changes to their virtual infrastructure will affect performance.
With Veeam MP v6, IT can easily answer questions like, “What would happen to performance if this host failed?” and “How many days do I have before this VM runs out of storage?”

- New Topology Views for Storage, Network and Compute: In the storage and network topologies, Veeam MP maps VMs to the storage and software-defined network components they are using, respectively. - 30 New System Center 2012 Dashboards: These take advantage of the new System Center 2012 Operations Manager dashboard widgets to show real-time views of critical vSphere systems. Dashboards include, “Top 10 hosts for CPU per cluster” and “Top 10 VMs for I/O per datastore.”
- New vSphere Analysis Reports: Veeam MP’s easy-to-use reports on common issues within the vSphere infrastructure now include:
  - Datastore Space and Performance Usage Heatmaps: Color codes show VM space usage and growth per datastore in one report, and VM IOPS and latency per datastore in another;
  - VM uptime: Tracks VM availability to ensure it meets service level objectives;
  - Top Troublemakers: Lists the noisiest, alert-generating vSphere objects in the environment;
  - Oversized and Undersized VMs: Provides guidance to right-size VM resources for a more efficient datacenter; and
  - Zombie VMs: Identifies idle and powered-off VMs that are wasting resources.
- Unique Performance Analysis and Correlation Monitors: These new monitor types provide dynamic correlated data right in the alert description. Unlike other VMware monitoring solutions, these monitors accept multiple performance metric inputs and gather correlated data from other vSphere objects to help solve problems faster. For example, a host CPU usage alert could provide information about the Top five VMs that are causing high CPU on a given host.
