There are three notable veg books that are creeping up the Amazon.com 100 best sellers list. Each of them look like pretty kick-ass books, especially Jonathan Safran Foer’s. At a time when the United States is abusing and killing over 10 billion animals every year for food, it’s good news that vegetarianism is getting so much play. Here are the three books.

Eating Animals

Jonathan Safran Foer’s new book, Eating Animals, has been creeping up the Amazon.com bestseller list for the past 10 days. It’s now at number twenty, which is pretty amazing. You may recognize his name because Foer is also the author of Everything Is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. He’s really been making the round, promoting the new book. He recently appeared on the The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The next incarnation of the Worcester’s Animal Liberation Theory & Action discussion group should definitely include Eating Animals.

The Conscious Cook

Also in the top 100 is The Conscious Cook: Delicious Meatless Recipes That Will Change the Way You Eat by Tal Ronnen. It is currently at #60 and has been on the top 100 for the for the past 15 days. I have not seen this book yet, it’s got to be amazing. I have eaten food that Tal prepared at animal rights conferences. The veg chicken salad sandwiches at Taking Action for Animals a few years are still the best sandwiches I’ve ever eaten. If my testimonial doesn’t convince you, Oprah also loves him. Ronnen worked as a personal chef for Oprah during her 21 day vegan challenge. He’s just downright awesome. Will the Conscious Cook challenge the Veganonicon for best vegan cookbook in America?

The Kind Diet

She may be a washed-up actress, but Alicia Silverstone is using every bit of fame she has left to help animals and advocate veganism. That’s cool, right? In that vein, she just published a new vegan cookbook: The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet. It’s in the top 100 list, so apparently people like it. The Kind Diet is now at #87, which is impressive for a cookbook. I’m pysched to see what she’s got in it.

The Boston Veg Fest is a blast, but if the prospect of tons of free vegan food samples and some kick-ass veg speakers isn’t enough for you, how about a free shirt? Vegan Outreach was kind enough to let VegWorcester share their table space. Here’s the deal: if you come out to the Boston Veg Fest and stop by the Vegan Outreach table, I will give you a free VegWorcester t-shirt.
1:15 —A New Global Warming Strategy: How Environmentalists are Overlooking Vegetarianism as the Most Effective Tool Against Climate Change
Noam Mohr

Global warming poses one of the most serious threats to the global environment ever faced in human history. Yet by focusing entirely on carbon dioxide emissions, major environmental organizations have failed to account for published data showing that other gases are the main culprits behind the global warming we see today. As a result, they are neglecting what might be the most effective strategy for reducing global warming in our lifetimes: advocating a vegetarian diet.

Noam Mohr is a physicist at Queens College. He holds degrees from Yale University and University of Pennsylvania. Noam has worked on global warming campaigns for the U.S. Public Interest Group, for which he published several papers on climate change and fuel economy standards. He has also served as state legislative specialist for the Humane Society of the United States.

This is a special comedy presentation by the 2008 and 2009 winners of “Best Local Comedian” (Boston Phoenix) and you won’t want to miss it! Is it a coincidence that they both are vegans?

Myq Kaplan is a comedian named Myq Kaplan. The Comedians magazine calls him “a comedy machine, in the best possible way. The way that some machines vend soda or prevent other machines from killing future revolutionaries – that’s how Myq Kaplan does comedy: relentlessly, methodically, unblinkingly.”

Myq, who will appear in his own half-hour special on Comedy Central in 2010, has already appeared on Comedy Central’s “Live at Gotham,” was featured at the 2009 Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, was the winner of the 2009 Caroline’s March Comedy Madness tournament and the inaugural New York Comedy Contest, was voted 2008’s Best Local Comic by readers of the Boston Phoenix, and has a grandmother who thinks he is gorgeous.

Now living in New York City, Myq describes himself as a Jewy-ish vegan who spells the name “Mike” weird. He enjoys being hilarious to his demographic, which is anyone who might know the word “demographic.” Myq is a graduate of Brandeis and holds a Masters in Linguistics from Boston University, where he won BU’s Funniest Student Competition. Check out his website or blog.

Zach Sherwin, aka MC Mr. Napkins, is a comic and rapper from Cambridge who combines his two favorite art forms into one hip-hop comedy act.

Zach was named Boston’s Best Comic of 2009 by the Boston Phoenix, and performed to much acclaim in Montreal’s prestigious Just For Laughs Comedy Festival. He has appeared on VH1’s “(White) Rapper Show,” CNN Headline News’s “News To Me,” and the front pages of CollegeHumor and YouTube. He hosts a weekly show at the Comedy Studio in Cambridge. “MC Mr. Napkins has exploded onto the comedy scene and is now considered by fans and comedy peers to be one of Boston’s hottest must-see acts.”(Boston Phoenix)

Zach produced a comedy show called “Tofunny” as part of the 2009 Alternative Comedy Festival with an all-vegan line-up of comics. He is a graduate of Brandeis. Read media praise about Zach.

Stella Zhou is an associate of Brighter Green, a policy action tank working at the intersection of animals, environment and global development. She is studying at Harvard School of Public Health in the Department of Global Health and Population. She is a recent graduate of Beijing Foreign Studies University, a vegan, and is one of China’s youngest animal rights activists.

Stella will discuss the missing role of farm animals in the present discussion of public health and population issues, mapping out the scope of the problem and the lost association between food and its origin.

She will offer her perspective as a Chinese national and share common beliefs held by the Chinese public and government regarding factory farming, meat and dairy consumption in China.

While China is not yet a bona fide “factory farm nation” like the U.S., consumption of meat and dairy products continues to rise, and Western-style, industrial systems for farmed animals are becoming more common. Given that every fifth person in the world is Chinese, even small increases in individual meat or dairy consumption will have broad environmental and climate impacts. China is also experiencing rising levels of obesity and chronic disease, significant water and air pollution, and rapid changes in traditional diets.

The book is all finished, but has not yet been release. However, it is available on pre-order from Amazon.com.

To announce the new book, Isa has release a quick video recipe. Here’s the video:

From the post-punk kitchen (Isa’s blog):

OK so I am getting back into the video world with a very appropriate, prim and proper little video about cookies! Mexican Hot Chocolate Snickerdoodles, to be exact. And I blather on about the Aztecs and autumn a bit in the video so I won’t overdo it here. But let me just say that they are one of my absolute favorites in the book, you probably already have all the ingredients, and I hope you make them!

I am definitely pre-ordering this book. We’ll see how Isa’s cookies compare to the yummy vegan cookies from Barely Legal Treats.

There are a few interesting stories that happened in the past few days of Worcester’s continually blossoming vegetarian renaissance. Let’s do a brief overview of them all:

Today Veggie Corner received some good coverage from the Telegram & Gazette: “Vegan cafe offers meals for a penny“

Photos from last weekend’s “feed-in” at the McDonalds on Main Street are now online. It was inspiring to have two groups of neighborhood kids join in our demonstration, holding signs and giving out flyers. It’s a total bummer that we didn’t get any photos with our big banner. The banner read: “Try some yummy FREE VEGAN FOOD, VegWorcester.com”. It was he center-piece of our feed-in until it fell apart. It was just paper and the wind tore it apart. We’ll definitely have a sturdy vinyl or cloth banner for our next feed-in.

Buddha Hut’s October buffet/fundraiser was a huge success. The food was wonderful (as always) and Buddha Hut raised a couple hundred dollars for VegWorcester. Heads up: looks like Buddha Hut will be holding the buffet/fundraisers monthly on the second Saturday. That means the November buffet is on Saturday, Nov 14 and in December it is on Saturday the 12th. Sweet! (Thanks Annie for drawing the flyer.)

I’ve recently been posting about the demonstrations that have been happening at the DCU center. Ringling Brothers has now left town, so the protests are over. Charlene posted some good photos from the Thursday demonstration, and there some photos from Saturday’s big demonstration were just uploaded to the VegWorcester flickr page. Saturday was a big success. With somewhere around 35 to 40 people out there holding signs and giving out flyers, I would be surprised to hear that someone got into the show without seeing a sign or getting a brochure about Ringling’s long history of animal mistreatment.

Let’s keep this party going.
