It's block party season again! Not that my block has one or I'm all that thrilled about no parking and a bunch of kids drawing with chalk in the street but the major thing I like about block parties here in Brooklyn is that you can walk in the middle of the street. Today they were filming Julie and Julia in Park Slope. The movie is based on this book about a woman who tries to cook all of Julia Child's recipes from Mastering The Art of French Cooking, Volume One in one year in order to change her life. The film is based in the 50's in Paris and Cafe Moutarde was apparently a stand in for a French cafe- hence the classic cars. The movie has a bunch of

What's the deal with this place? It seems odd that they placed their Garfield's signage under the roll up gate so you can't see it most of the time since they never seem to be open. I peeked in- it goes back really far- all the way to the block behind it. Looks like a bar/restaurant possibly. Or just a bar.

This weekend was the opening day of the Brooklyn Flea Market in Ft. Greene and it was sort of like a mini...mall. It's just like, it's just like.. a mini...mall. There were lots of children's screen printed shirts and crafty art type items. Not as much flea market type junk vendors which is what I love.. the cheap hidden pulled out of the basement finds. The great 1893 Eagle Warehouse and Storage Company of Brooklyn building in Brooklyn Heights. This building reminds me of a fortress. That huge clock on the left is in some lucky dude's living room with windows providing a spectacular view of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan skyline beyond.

Here's a weird fire hydrant just sitting all by itself in the middle of the woods in Prospect Park. There are no structures anywhere near it, probably none for half a mile in any direction. Maybe it's for forest fires?

An interesting thing about Park Slope is that people tend to leave clothes and household objects resting against their fences and buildings rather than throw them out. Along with the stoop sales in the warmer weather it's a bit of a culture of recycling rather than waste. And of course you have to put a little note on anything that works to improve your chances of someone else actually picking

What's interesting about this block in Park Slope is that virtually the entire side of the street consists of brownstones that have had their stoops removed, entrances placed at ground level and these concrete bench/tree planters placed in front. They also all have the same light fixtures. The opposite side of the street has many similar buildings as well. There are some variances amongst them

Sometimes you just know when it's time to get new furniture. Here's a weird building in Gowanus. The 2nd story looks like a later addition in a completely discongruous style to the lower portion. The whole thing looks sort of abandoned, although it's entirely possible that it's connected to another building and this is just the back side.

Some surreal clouds looking down 4th Avenue (I don't have to mention it's at 8th St. do I?). You can see the minimal progress so far on The Argyle luxury condo building on the near left. Two floors so far. Some have likened Fourth Ave as the Park Ave. of Brooklyn, but it's not exactly there yet.. maybe in 10 years. maybe never. Probably never, it has it's own unique and developing character.

The open lot next door to the Iglesia Pentacostal La Biblia Inc. (Inc?!) is being developed into condos. 10 units to be exact. I would assume based on looking at the lot's width and location at 701 Union Street between 4th and 5th Avenues that it would be 5 stories of 2 units per floor. 10 stories of floorthroughs seems unlikely to me although presumably they have air rights from the
