According to the New York Times, schools are starting to ban sodas and other sugar drinks from school buildings. Also, declines in demand for sodas is on the rise along with concerns over diabetes. Although schools have been removing sodas and other sugary drinks from vending machines for the last few years, the Faulkton district is one of the first in the country to institute a ban, according to the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, which works to reduce childhood obesity.

The school cafeteria will serve water, low-fat milk and fruit juices, and those beverages, as well as sports drinks and noncaffeinated diet sodas sold in vending machines, are all that will be available on school property. “Sure, there will be some opposition to it, but this is the way things are changing, like it or not,” said Kyle Ortmeier, the 17-year-old behind the school’s wellness campaign.

Cold, bubbly, sweet soda, long the American Champagne, is becoming product non grata in more places these days. Schools are removing sugary soft drinks from vending machines at a faster pace, and local governments from San Antonio to Boston are stepping up efforts to take them out of public facilities as the nation’s concerns about obesity and its costs grow.

What began as a slow decline accelerated in the middle of the last decade and now threatens some of the best-known brands in the business. Coke and Pepsi are relying more than ever on the “flat” drinks and bottled waters in their portfolios and on increases in the price of sodas, forcing die-hard drinkers to pay more to feed their sugar habits.

How Many Vending Machines Do I Need?

First, I need to say thank you for everyone signing up for my Vending Newsletter. I cannot believe how many people have gotten on board to take such an active roll in learning about the vending business. For those of you who have not joined, I'll give a little teaser. All newsletter subscribers get to ask me any vending question they want, for free! I am happy to have been able to help out so many people so far and look forward to your question.

I have been getting a lot of questions lately from people who are looking at vending to replace their "normal" work income. Often the question will be stated like this, "How many vending machines do I need to replace XXX dollars a month?" I have also noticed that most of these people are referring to bulk vending machines. I suspect that the reason I am getting this question is twofold: #1 the economy has everyone scared and #2 I suspect the biz-opp scams are promoting hard (because of #1).

I would like to take this time to make a couple points. Vending is a great business, but if you are looking to it to get out of a job you hate, or feel no security with, then owning a vending business may not be the answer for you. Your answer may simply be to find a better job. If that is the case, I suggest you check out a site: 48 Days to the Job You Love by Dan Miller. His books helped get me on the right track.

Vending Machine Smokes Banned Today

A Welsh Government ban on the sale of tobacco from vending machines in Wales came into force today (Wednesday 1 February). Although tobacco vending machines account for only one per cent of the UK market in tobacco sales, a disproportionate number of young people under 18 purchase cigarettes from vending machines. Ten per cent of regular smokers aged 11 to 15 report that cigarette vending machines are their usual source of tobacco.

The Protection from Tobacco (Sales from Vending Machines) (Wales) Regulations 2011 are designed to protect children and young people by restricting access to tobacco.

Fake Snack Vending Machines Invading Utah

Vending Machines May Not Cause Student Weight Gain, Study Says

Pulling the vending machines out of schools has long been something of a battle cry for parents concerned with childhood obesity. Many schools and districts rely on vendor contracts to finance extracurricular activities (in New York City, snacks sold in vending machines are limited in calories, fat and sugar content), while advocates worry that the omnipresent snacks will mean weight gain in students. But a study (via The Wall Street Journal’s Ideas Market blog) following 20,000 students from kindergarten through eighth grade found no link between the presence of snack-food machines and weight gain from fifth to eighth grades. The researchers suggest that eating habits may be firmly established by middle school, meaning the children who eat less healthy snacks at school are the same ones who munch on them at home.

But before we give snack-food sales in school a free pass, the study’s authors suggest more research, and I suggest more thought. Those vending machines may have no direct link to weight gain in children and teenagers, but our societal embrace of the constant snacking mentality remains a likely culprit in the obesity epidemic. Those brightly colored bags in that big, ad-covered box add to the pervasive message that we should never be even a little bit hungry, and that the answer to the impulse to eat is always to quickly open a bag.

I'm 16 years old and have a small vending machine route in town with gumball and candy machines but now I want to expand. Any ideas?

What type of vending machines or systems similar to that exist other than:
gumballs, candy, soda, ice cream, pay phones, dvd rental, toys

That covers all I can think of, thanks for your ideas on expanding my business!

Question by Mrs. Doe: My local grocery finally got one of those movie vending machines, but the DVD is always scratched?

So I guess they use the same DVD's over and over in the same location? I have rented Toy Story 3 a couple of time, and the skipping makes the movie unenjoyable so I always turn it off. I emailed Blockbuster with no reply. I will buy one, but people keep renting that movie with scratches I guess.... Do you have bad luck with the vending machine?
We only have the one, and its blockbuster.
