I just have heard of Bader Ginsburg's death, the second woman to be appointment as a Justice in the United States Supreme Court in 1993.

It is amazing the importance that judges have in the American system. I guess that such demeanor reflects how strong the judiciary of that country is. When I compare such demonstrations with the situation in Venezuela I can only think that I don't remember when was the last time that I'd heard about the legacy of a Venezuelan judge. I am sure that during the twentieth century remarkable figures of the judiciary arrived, but right now we only find despicable individuals.

It is interesting, though, that I've noticed that in the Venezuelan top Law schools you don't find people willing to become part of the judiciary. Instead, the best students are willing to get involved in private practice, and, if possible, to apply to a job at a renowned law firm in New York or London, once your llm program has been complete.

Despite the fact that I respect this point of view, I believe that we can't surrender the future of the Venezuelan judiciary to the worst people. On the contrary, we must try to improve our system wherever is possible, and not understimate the possible positive outcomes that may arise from such course of action. Our society also needs Justice.

Today I just finished the documentary The Last Dance. It was a great piece. At least for me. I really enjoy basketball, and by far 90s basketball was the best in my memories. Watching how Michael Jordan was able to pull his team during the late 80s and the core of the 90s was really amazing and it brings me a good remembrance of old times.

I still love basketball. Perhaps is my favorite sport and I am really grateful for the opportunity to had lived the Bulls' era and to witness such time. I could keep talking about the greatest figures of the NBA the whole day, but that's another story.

New week. I've been watching some news related to the education challenges that kids in developing nations may face because of coronavirus.

According to BBC, ten of thousands students may face outschooling. How many Venezuelans aren't able to meet basic standards to get back to school? The same goes for African youngsters unable to access Internet. I believe connectivity is the answer.

Could we start to talk about a "Covid generation"?

The return of DirecTV to Venezuela is a controversial topic. Overall, there are supporters of the new provision of services by the cable company. At the same time, some argue that the come back of DirecTV represents a several setback to the situation of our country.

As a result of the return of DirecTV to Venezuela, some rumors spread by detractors state that the company could be involved in grey negotiations, and that the process is unclear. In addition, the Venezuelan government regains the possibility to broadcast VTV signal through the cable device.

Nonetheless, many Venezuelans received the announcement with joy. After months struggling to find means to watch TV (in a country with the slowest internet in the world), DirecTV's appearance brings a spark of light among the darkness. Furthermore, most Venezuelans lack quality services to access to others means of entertainment.

In conclusion, the news are recent. We must remain alert to see how this topic develops.

Surprisingly enough, today I watched a TV reportage broadcasted by Sky News that revealed the situation of two Venezuelan prisons in Valencia (State of Carabobo). Of course, many questions have been arising in my mind since then. For instance, how did they get inside the prison facilities? Secondly, how did they obtain an interview with Iris Varela, the Venezuelan prisons’ Minister?

No doubt, these guys from Sky News know how to move their pieces with Venezuelan power. Many local media reporters had tried to emulate these actions with unfruitful results.

The reportage depicts how the Venezuelan prison system is crumbling, with everything -literally- falling apart, lacking authorities and with a terrible sense of despair. Is not that we are discovering anything new, but is hard to face our reality amid the whole package of hard circumstances that we are living.

I fell asleep yesterday, so I could not write in my blog. I guess that it happens some times. I am glad that I've been able to remain constant and continue with my daily reflections in a row. Anyhow, let's keep moving. Yesterday Mr. Joe Biden decided to appoint Kamala Harris as his Vice president. It is the first time that a black american women is nominated for the ticket. I am not following American politics that close these days, so I don't know how this decision will favor Biden or may affect Trump's reelections plans.

I also read that the United Kingdom entered into recession, since the GDP of the European nation fell to 20.4% during the second quarter of 2020 due to Covid 19. At the same time, Russian authorities announced that they have found a vaccine for the coronavirus. It is very soon to decipher the outcomes of this discovery, and it must be analyzed cautiously, since the Russian authorities are well know for their lack of credibility in several issues of public policy and international relations.

I am sharing with you a picture of this weekend. This is me cutting the lawn, and macheting scrubs and brushwood at my garden. At the top of the little hill you may watch Pabellón, my dog. As you may already guess, Caribbean weather does not care about pandemics. Plants still grow and you must trim the forest to preserve some order.

Recent political events in Belarus have been a significant topic of discussion in Venezuela. Many analysts are trying to compare the situation of the European country with the Caribbean nation. After all, chavismo has been ruling the Venezuelan destiny for more than 20 years, so isn't difficult to set parallelisms within both States.

Overall, I believe that we must be cautious with this kind of comparisons. Personally, I think that Venezuela is facing a more complex situation. The country is a failed State that hardly can be compared with the circumstances of Belarus.

Today I also watched in the news that the prime minister of Scotland is worried due to the lower grades that its citizens have obtained during the lockdown period. Academic work during this period is driven by a sense of uncertainty. It's a controversial topic. Freshmen and high school students have been interviewed in several media expressing their concern on how schools will manage this situation.

The government of Lebanon has announced its resignation. I guess this may good news. The authorities recognized that corruption surpasses the institutional bodies of the administration. The history of Lebanon has shown many difficult challenges in recent decades. Let's pray for Beirut, so Lebanese people may find peace and prosperity in the future.

Today I was committed to gardening. During quarentine, it has been necessary to cut the lawn, trimm the trees and clean the area where usally Pabellón takes his walks.

Despite the state of destruction that humanity is facing, the fact that grass keeps growing, bushes still flourish, reminds us that nature remains unstoppable and will continue its path regardless of may happen to humanity.

To a certain degree, it reminded me the fate of dinosaurs. They are no longer with us and yet they were the kings of the world for ages, even millennia.

I have been noticing that the blogger version of my platform is very useful for writing purposes, but it lacks a lot functionality when I want to upload pictures or shares link in my posts.

In any case, Saturday was a day characterized by rain, long lines for gas and new readings that I started. My sister lent me Red Pyramid, a book that supposedly is aimed for teenagers but I really found I interesting. It's amazing the information that you may find in this kind of books. I'm learning new things about London, ancient Egypt history and mythology, so never underestimate a teenager's book.

It's really amazing the sense of despair that sometimes surrounds our daily life during quarentine. Today I had heard early in the morning that some food shops were being closed by local authorities, without further explanations.

Please note that these stores were following biosecurity measures, and their were providing essential goods for the population.

I am really afraid because I have the feeling that rapidly the Venezuelan authorities are loosing control over the governance grip. Needless to say, in a country that is deemed by many people a failed State, things can get worse very quickly.

Supposedly, next week the authorities announced a sort of "overture" on the quarentine, but such openness is relative because most cities are running out of gas. Again, is not only the pandemic, is the challenge that means to face such calamity living in socialist God forgotten country. Pray for us.

Zum lernen ist niemand zu alt, this is a German quote that I found today in the Deutsche Welle Instagram account. It literally means that we are never too old to learn new things.

Recently, I've heard of a ninety six year old men who became the oldest person in Palermo, Italy to earn a graduate degree in his country. He couldn't study when he was young due to the second world war, but he started to study as self-taught and eventually was accepted in college. These kind of stories are the ones that give me courage to move on.

In Caracas, apparently, gas is becoming scarce once again, so hundred of cars started to make lines to full their tanks. Without doubt, this will affect the already precarious management of governance in the city. During all this quarentine process, undoubtedly, the hardest weeks were the ones without gasoline.

However, not all are bad news. Today the Commercial Law Society of Venezuela (Sovedem in Spanish) announced the publication of the fourth edition of its academic journal. I had the privilege to contribute to the magazine, so you will be able to read my work on speculation and contracts. Have a good day.

In my head I have this quote: "Je voir la vie comme un cadeau", from the song N'attandon pas of Vianney (I hope I wrote it well). I just watched the official video clip today and really find it amazing.

Watching French videoclips I have realized that French composers often use their songs to elevate social topics. In the last months I've heard "pas beaux", "la vie d'un artiste", for instance and I believe that this are great songs, they help me to improve my french, but there is more.

By questioning society, these songs also help me to realize deeper contents. How fragile is our interaction with other human beings, how we are determined by certain prototypes of beauty, and why we are afraid to reveal ourselves as we are.

In N'attandon pas, the figure of an old women living each moment to the limit is quite emotional. Jumping to the void, grasping the adventure, no matter what. Great video.

Today my prayers and thoughts are with Beirut and the people Lebanon. I regret the outcomes of that devastating explosion. The videos circulating in social media are tremendous and bring me horrific images.

I don't know much about explosives or chemical topics, but I believe that we must remain supportive with people that face this type of calamities. Furthermore, we can not dismay in such circumstances. Even more when we must take into account the Covid19 issue.

These kind of news are hard to understand.

In addition, Latin America was the main point of another news. Former Colombian President, Mr. Alvaro Uribe was arrested in his house and will face certain charges against the Colombian judiciary.

Uribe is perhaps the most prominent politic of Colombia in the last two decades. If we analyse the circumstances, it is complex to separate the political practice from the legal process. Is this measure an evidence of the existence of the rule of law in Colombia, or it reflects a political measure vested with an anti crusade narrative against Uribe?

The answer may take sometime. However, based on the fragility of Colombian institutions, the results of this measure remains uncertain and hardly could bring good news to the South American nation.

Quarentine has modified my sleep schedule. While I am documenting my insights on how I am living and surviving my own lockdown I realize that I should add certain topics to my blog, so the readers may be able to frame its content more easily.

Blogging in 2020 may seem a challenge, since people have migrated to social media, specially Instagram, and the content available in blogs lacks of interest for the public.

However, Instagram has its flaws. The social network faces limitations regarding the number of characters, and blogging still preserves a state of reflection and awareness that I haven't seen in Instagram. Plus, if you're reading you are not depending solely on images, so the content requires more abstraction. I feel good posting and writing in my blog.

Today I read an article published in the Cato Institute initiative/project known as "Human progress", related to how humanity is managing the crisis derived from the Covid19.

Interesting enough, the piece states that humanity has been shortening the time of response to tackle pandemics. When the HIV/AIDs was discovered at the beginning of the 80s, the first treatments were applied in the mid nineties (1995). Later, when Ebola arised in 2015, it took more than two years to develop a vaccine. Now the Covid19 research from several countries and institutions has announced that a vaccine may be ready by fall. This would mean that in less than a year the solution could be able to help billions of people.

I also watch my dearest Rockets play against the Bucks. I see that the teams are a little bit rusted, out of shape. I need to get used to the digital screen next to the court, once again.

Regarding the news, I am worried since I read that the city of Melbourne in Australia declared curfew and state of emergency due to the rise of Covid19 cases. The same goes to a little school in Indiana that opened it's doors and was forced to quarentine some students almost immediately due to positive tests on the virus. So if that is happening in the free Western countries, what can I expect from Venezuela? I will continue my prayers.

New month. Welcome August. And despite all the positive forecast, we continue our quarentine in Venezuela.

Today was Saturday so I had more time for me since the grip of labor was lessened. However I was invited to participate in an Instagram event prepared by the guys of Cedice Joven so we could talk about Milton Friedman's legacy.

I felt really well talking about one of my beloved intelectual mentors. It's a pity that my connection wasn't that good and I appeared moving like a robot. But is always good to talk about Milton's legacy.

I really hope that this month may bring us some hope regarding the Covid19. I watched the news and the Saint Louis Cardinals game in the MLB was canceled due to the positive test results of several players. I was watching the Lakers game vs. Toronto Raptors (It's kind of weird the digital crowd that surround the game court but I will get used to this technology) and I remain skeptical on the outcomes of sport events during the lockdown.

Being honest I prefer to watch Roger Federer playing tennis in Italy with two teenagers at the rooftop of their buildings.

(P.s. thanks to the guys of Cedice Joven I discovered that Harry Potter was born on July 31, just as Milton Friedman and Ignatius of Loyola).

It's time to say goodbye to July. I love the last day of this month. On July 31 were born to individuals that I admire: Milton Friedman and Ignatius of Loyola.

Milton represents one of the most important intellectuals that have influenced my life. On the other hand, Saint Ignatius is the founder of the Society of Jesus, the Catholic order of the Jesuits (most part of my formal education was in Jesuits institutions).

Someday I will take the espiritual exercises of Ignatius. It is said that this practice requires a lot of mental strength and preparation. It's not a walk in the park or an issue for novices. God please guide me thorough this path towards enlightenment.

One of the curious things that quarentine has taught me is that you must find new things to keep motivated. Today, for instance, I discovered that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Christopher Nolan are celebrating their respective birthdays. I also discovered that the latest Batman movie will reschedule its shooting process on September 30, my birthday. So I guess that for the cinematographic industry it was a good day, despite all the well known issues. I just can't believe that Arnold and Nolan were born the same day. Great. July is almost gone.

How you will describe that kind of days filled with tons of zoom meetings and delayed work? Well that's exactly how I feel today. Quarantine and lock-downs have modified the way in which we understand and conduct our labor performance. And we are only facing what could be described as the beginning of an uncertain process. It is complex to defy so many obstacles.

Regarding the situation of Venezuela, today the new regulation of purchase and sale of basic goods based in the last number of your identity card entered into force. However, it is not clear how the stores are going to implement such measure amid chaos. It is possible that some stores may apply it, but I believe that most part of the commerce field will try to look aside and move forward with the difficult dynamic that most citizens are facing nowadays. Keep you post on the subject.

Yesterday we celebrated the arrival of Pabellón (My dog) to our house, eight years ago. I feel blessed for all the good things that Pabellón has brought to my family. During this pandemic season we must try to grasp the value of little things that make life different and special.

Today I went out of my house. It is incredible to observe how people in the street disobey sanitary measures regarding the prevention of Covid19. I am sure that people may think that the virus is a joke. I am really afraid, because I am not sure of the possible outcomes that the disease may bring to Venezuela. In many ways I feel like a prisoner.

En su trabajo titulado A Letter to a Noble Lord, el maestro Edmund Burke señalaba que existe una marcada diferencia entre las nociones de cambio y transformación. El cambio, señala Burke, implica la alteración de la sustancia de los objetos y trae consigo una posible pérdida de todo el bien que dentro de sí tiene el objeto en referencia. El cambio es novedad, y la expansión de dicha novedad –si es total o parcial- no puede conocerse de antemano. Por otro lado, se encuentra la transformación. A través de ella, las modificaciones no alteran la sustancia del objeto, sino que se dirigen a remediar cualquier sufrimiento o defecto que fuere originado por el mismo.

Para Burke, de este modo, el cambio que se daba a través de la reforma y no de la tabla rasa era aquel que, efectivamente, permitía preservar y mejorar las instituciones del Estado. Esta era la verdadera transformación. El cambio entendido como una innovación absoluta pudiera ser destructivo y constituía una sustitución del orden capaz de derivar en experimentos potencialmente peligrosos, emanados del seno del gobierno y la autoridad.

Desde luego, las premisas de Burke pudieran ser cuestionables dentro de un ámbito distinto al de las ciencias sociales (por ejemplo, ¿qué pasaría si se descubre algún medicamento totalmente innovador que ayude a la humanidad a erradicar una peligrosa enfermedad?), pero dentro del espacio de la teoría política bien pudieran dar algún asidero para intentar explicar algunos fenómenos de la actualidad.

En lo que va de año 2020 han sido múltiples las manifestaciones de lo que llamaremos la nueva izquierda para fines didácticos, y no estrictamente apegados a la teoría política. Una izquierda con pretensiones totalitarias que, si no se sitúan al margen, acabarán por poner en jaque el sistema de valores republicanos sobre el cual se yerguen buena parte de las denominadas democracias liberales. Tal vez el mayor asombro y estupefacción lo ha causado la oleada de protestas y movimientos “sociales” derivados del homicidio de George Floyd en Estados Unidos, dando pie a diversas manifestaciones y reclamos que deben verse con sumo cuidado.

Comencemos por lo esencial. Cualquier persona con mediana comprensión y apego a la ley rechazará el uso excesivo de la fuerza por parte de las fuerzas policiales, al igual que debiera manifestarse adversa a la discriminación racial. De forma tal que aquellas personas que contravengan estos principios –debido proceso a la víctima, no discriminación, igualdad ante la ley– debe ser procesado y sancionado de conformidad con el ordenamiento imperante. Hasta allí, con sus matices, se hace comprensible la indignación y la efervescencia ciudadana.

¿Pero qué sucede cuando lo que inicialmente parecía una lucha reivindicatoria se transforma en una manifestación amorfa, de demandas difusas y polarizantes, cuyo hilo conductor está signado por la violencia y el saqueo? Pues que la lucha pierde su sentido. O mejor dicho, quienes controlan la agenda de protestas develan sus reales intenciones que lejos están del procesamiento ajustado a derecho de quienes abusaron de su autoridad y causaron el lamentable suceso de George Floyd.

Existe un argumento falaz cuando se dice que no se puede opinar sobre lo que está sucediendo en Estados Unidos cuando no se vive allí, porque el foráneo no está en capacidad de comprender “lo que realmente pasa aquí”. Aunque vivir en un lugar puede dar un conocimiento valioso, el mismo no es absoluto ni infalible. Los locales también pueden equivocarse. Pregúntenle si no a los venezolanos que viven en Venezuela y todavía creen que la inflación no la causa el Banco Central de Venezuela sino el empresario especulador y claman por controles “eficientes”. El vivir en hiperinflación por unos cuantos años no les ha hecho descubrir la verdad de sus males, a pesar de estar padeciéndolos en carne propia.

En todo caso, y volviendo al tema de Estados Unidos, hoy se hace más que evidente que detrás de lo que parecía una cándida y pacífica protesta de reivindicación a minorías y respeto a la ley, se convirtió en una clara amenaza a las bases fundacionales del propio modo de vida estadounidense. La premisa es más que clara: hay que eliminar el sistema de gobierno imperante en el país, el sistema que comprende desde los órganos de policía hasta la propia figura del Ejecutivo Nacional. Entretanto, y por el medio del camino, se llevan de por medio expresiones literarias, series de televisión, museos, parques, plazas, estatuas, locales comerciales, e incluso cualquier ciudadano común que simplemente represente el “antiguo orden de cosas”.

A los ojos de las ideas de Burke planteadas inicialmente en este artículo, estaríamos frente al cambio. Un cambio absoluto que poco o nada bueno estima en el objeto que desea transformar. Visto así, como bien señala el pensador nacido en Dublín, se teje el camino para un peligroso experimento social, que bien pudiera desviarse hacia el camino totalitario. Las razones para sostener estas premisas como punto de partida son sencillas pero desgarradoras. Buena parte de los manifestantes subversivos buscan destruir las instituciones imperantes en el país. Adicionalmente a ello, dado su proceder, se ha puesto en evidencia su desprecio por el Estado de Derecho, el acatamiento de la ley, el respeto al derecho de propiedad y, por supuesto, cualquier atisbo de mediación pacífica para concretar algunas de sus demandas y necesidades.

Hay un denodado intento de generarle al ciudadano estadounidense un sentido de desconfianza y descreimiento en sus instituciones, de forma tal que piense que su sistema no sirve, no tiene solución y que una vez convertido en cadáver no tiene remedio de ningún tipo por lo que debe ser sustituido por completo. Se quiere, así, hacerle sentir a la población estadounidense que su país denota una sociedad fallida, desarticulada y totalmente ausente del sentido de cooperación, armonía y bienestar al que debe aspirar toda comunidad. Así, frente a este bombardeo incesante, sentir orgullo patrio, enarbolar una bandera, es visto como un gesto de traición, del mismo modo que se desprecia a todo aquel que de alguna u otra forma promueve los valores y tradiciones sobre los cuales se ha construido la sociedad estadounidense a lo largo de más de tres siglos.

No queda claro cuál será el alcance inmediato de todo ello. Nuevamente con esa premisa se le confiere la razón a Burke. Se puede conjeturar sobre las posibles intenciones, pero en la praxis, hasta dónde puede llegar toda esta marejada destructiva causa preocupación. Hay quienes señalan que esto se limita a una estratagema electoral para adversar al presidente Trump, convirtiendo la indignación del caso Floyd en una suerte de plebiscito mediático y callejero contra el mandatario estadounidense (irónicamente al tiempo que se criticaba la laxitud con la que el gobierno federal había manejado la pandemia derivada del coronavirus, y las solicitudes de “lockdown” por no pocos adversarios del mandatario republicano), y se cree que una vez eliminado Trump del panorama las aguas volverían a su cauce.

Otros sugieren que quienes protestan no son más que una minoría muy ruidosa –y rabiosa– con buena pegada en los medios y redes sociales, pero que, sin embargo, es rechazada por la mayoría de los ciudadanos estadounidenses, quienes quieren vivir en paz en un país que tanto les ha dado. Lo cierto es que el movimiento ha comenzado a trascender las fronteras americanas, y minoritario o no, ha llegado a otros países. Tal es el caso del Reino Unido.

Lo ideal es que quienes adversan al sistema (y fuere el caso concreto, al presidente Trump) decidan removerlo a través de los mecanismos institucionales dispuestos para ello, especialmente las elecciones. Pensamos, sin embargo, que lo que se avizora es mucho más complejo y trasciende al mandatario norteamericano. Son demasiadas las aristas que hacen pensar que estas manifestaciones, el alcance de sus propuestas, no acabarán con la eventual salida de Trump y la llegada de un demócrata a la Casa Blanca. No. Esto va mucho más allá.

De allí que hoy la mayoría de los estadounidenses tienen la difícil misión de sobreponerse a la hegemonía de pensamiento que a través de distintos medios ha difundido la nueva izquierda, y defender la tradición y valores que subyacen dentro de los principios de un gobierno limitado, y que han hecho de Estados Unidos tal vez la nación moderna más exitosa de la historia. Por los vientos que soplan, luce poco probable que cualquier cambio radical produzca un mayor grado de libertad para los ciudadanos de aquel país. Por el contrario, se avecinan tiempos de censura, violencia y persecución. Tiempos que probablemente ningún estadounidense de espíritu libre desearía. Bien lo sabemos nosotros los venezolanos, que amplia experiencia tenemos en el tema. Hay ciertos principios que trascienden Estados y naciones y deben defenderse a toda costa por el bien de la humanidad.

First post of February, and I thank God for the wonderful things that that have occurred during these days. Finally, the UCAB Lamun 2020 delegation went to Madrid. It was so hard to find the whole sponsorship that the sole fact of watching this guys passing the immigration lines at the airport was the greatest gift that I could receive. Hopefully they will rock out at the UN model and the circle will be completed.

I am facing a very busy week, but despite the enormous burdens that I have to manage I feel perfectly safe thanks to the power of God. This may sound extrange but I have a lot of Faith regarding the outcome of numerous projects that are currently under way. Weekend is ahead. Let's pray so I can rest al least a little bit.
