As part of Highways Performance Space's 25th Anniversary, painter, musician, and veteran of the performance art wars, The Dark Bob, hosts a special two-night program of short performances, cocktails, high-profile reunions, and old-school audience appreciation. On the evenings of May 2nd and 3rd, join them in celebrating the pioneering men and women who made the avant-garde scene and put LA on the performance-art map in the 1970s and 1980s. The first night is dedicated to the 1970s, a first-generation era of low-fi, DIY art made on the spot for oneself and friends and whoever was around. In a very real sense, this time was about throwing elements into surprise contact and "seeing what happened." In that spirit, the night may seem like just a party... but it could just as easily be a recipe for disaster. The second night is dedicated to the 1980s, and the radical changes that swept through the performance-art genre as practitioners embraced the allure of new media spectacle, increasingly drafting choreographers, musicians, actors, writers, filmmakers, and producers into something more theatrical, and all about the audience experience. And in that spirit, the night is a fast-paced program of radical work presented in five-minute increments evoking the revved up zeitgeist of the Big '80s.

A RECIPE FOR DISASTER:

Generation 1, Los Angeles Alternative Art in the 70's

A cocktail mixer featuring some 20 or more of these legendary artists up close and in their natural habit. It's a truly rare chance to interact with them and watch them interact with each other - many for the first time in years. The evening's title is no joke, as this cocktail mixer also forms the backdrop for a documentary scene in the old spirit of "seeing what happens, for and by anyone who turns up." The artists' most seminal works will be projected in the space throughout the night.

The Wanda Coleman Portable Spoken Word Mural will be on display. It was completed last week with youth participating in the Youth Build program through Venice Community Housing Corporation.

The project is an installation that honors the legacy of Wanda Coleman, known as the LA Blueswoman and the unofficial poet laureate of Los Angeles, who passed away last year.

Beyond The Box: A Utility Box Mural Program

The City of Glendale Arts and Culture Commission has designed a program
to support public art programs and to enhance the community and
neighborhoods through the use of murals. The project, Beyond the Box,
would enhance the aesthetics of the city, promote civic pride, increase
pedestrian traffic and extend public art to new areas and unexpected
places while creating an attractive environment and allowing art to be
introduced to the public in a creative and inventive way. The program
goal is to bring beauty to unexpected places such as public
infrastructure and utility boxes. Glendale Arts and Culture Commission
will partner with volunteers from Great American Cleanup to select
artists to create murals on 26 locations throughout Downtown Glendale.

Artist stipend: $750

2014 GETTY UNDERGRADUATE MULTICULTURAL SUMMER INTERNSHIPS AT CSPG

CSPG has been awarded a grant from the Getty Grant Program to hire two undergraduate students for summer internships. Interns are given a stipend of $4,000 for a full-time ten-week period between June 3, 2014 and August 22, 2014.

Qualification & Eligibility Requirements: Getty internships are intended specifically for outstanding students who are members of groups underrepresented in professions related to museums and the visual arts: individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/a/ Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander descent. Previous experience in the arts is not required. (1) S/he must be a currently enrolled undergraduate and have completed at least one semester of college by June 2014, and those who will complete their degree by September 1, 2014 are also eligible to apply; (2) s/he must be a resident of or attend college in Los Angeles County. Students who have previously served as Getty Multicultural Summer Interns at our organization are not eligible for consideration.

Required:

* Working experience with Microsoft Office programs
* Strong visual interpretation and research skills

Preferred:

Familiarity with foreign languages
Experience in digital photography, graphic design, Adobe design programs and Dreamweaver.

Job Description:

The interns will receive training on some or all of the following projects:
1. Catalogue and data entry for political graphics using a museum database program.
2. Process and describe CSPG's collection on a folder level.
3. Research artistic and social justice issues as they relate to works in the collection.
4. Prepare digital images to be linked to database records.
5. Assist the Program Director with tasks related to fundraising and event planning.
6. Work on administrative tasks related to arts management.

CSPG's posters are featured in the first exhibition to examine the pivotal role Dolores Huerta played in the fight for the rights of farm workers; and in the founding, with César Chávez, of the United Farm Workers (UFW). The exhibition includes approximately 120 serigraphs, posters, drawings, and documentary photographs that chronicle Huerta's life and this important struggle, as well as her ongoing work as an influential labor and human rights activist.

Huerta views art as an important catalyst in movements for change. She has been the subject and source of inspiration for works by many artists. The early involvement of Teatro Campesino in the fields and posters by artists supporting the organizing efforts of the UFW are on view, as well as contemporary pieces that address issues Huerta continues to work to impact: violence against women, human and civil rights, LGBTQ rights, labor rights, and immigration.

Serigrafía: Silkscreens from California's Latino/a Printmaking Community

Serigrafía surveys the powerful tradition of information design in California's Latino community, featuring thirty influential silkscreens from the 1970s to the present. Created at and distributed by artist-led collectives, or centros, the works in the exhibition explore subjects such as the Viet Nam war, United Farm Workers grape boycott, U.S. intervention in Central America and the Caribbean, and the Iraq War. Recent work includes marriage equality and the Occupy Wall Street Movement. All were conceived to provoke, protest, and praise. Occupying the formal ground somewhere between mass media and art object, they have often been relegated to the margins of display and critical reception more due to their political content, than for their aesthetics.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Kay,

There’s a moment from last year I keep thinking about. It was during the city council meeting at ArtsDay—the City Council Chamber was filled with arts advocates, some of them wearing their red ArtsDay t-shirt, some holding them up over the heads, others still wearing the special ArtsDay stickers we’d made up for the event.

I was standing at the podium addressing City Council on behalf of this group, inviting them to cheer or raise their hands when what I said applied to them. I asked how many volunteer in their communities, how many read for leisure, how many exercise regularly. There were great cheers on each question. But then I asked, “How many of you vote on a regular basis?” And the crowd went wild.

This is the moment I’ve carried with me from ArtsDay 2013. It wasn’t just the strength of the crowd’s passion for voting that stirred me—it was their shared commitment that did. Those voices, blending together—that’s what ArtsDay is for me. A chance for us to gather together and celebrate our shared commitment to Los Angeles and to arts and culture. To be one voice.

And it’s not just an arts and culture voice—it’s a Los Angeles voice. Arts, culture, and creativity are at the heart of what makes Los Angeles the city it is, the city we live in, the city we love.

184 organizations signed on this year to be Friends of ArtsDay 2014, helping us demonstrate the depth, breadth, and diversity of organizations who support arts and culture in LA. That's a huge testament to our sector's value, not only to artists and audiences, but to scientists, entrepreneurs, higher education—you name it.

If you live or work in Los Angeles, I hope you can be there with us this year on Friday the 11th to participate in that moment. You’ll hear Mayor Garcetti speak about his vision for our city’s future through creativity and find out how arts, culture, and creativity inform work happening in medicine, housing, philanthropy, and more. Even if you can't be there in person, read on to learn how you can still be part of all the great things happening on April 11.

Arts and culture brings us together—in theaters, in galleries and museums, in cafes, in vacant lots and parking lots, on the streets of our city.

Arts and culture is a destination, yes. But it is also the vehicle taking us there. Thank you for all you do to carry us all there.

Arts for LA Unveils the ArtsDay 2014 T-Shirt Artwork!

Congratulations to Stephen Walker, who sent us this year’s winning #ArtsDayLA t-shirt design!

Stephen is an art director, designer, and photographer living in Council District 4. His design captures the vibrant spirit of Los Angeles’s creative communities by adding art implements to the icons of our city’s skyline.

We asked what he found so inspiring about life in Los Angeles. "In 1990 I moved to Los Angeles from Louisiana hoping to find more creative opportunities in graphic design and, like many of us transplants, for the ocean proximity and of course, the weather!" Stephen told us. "I immediately found great people who inspired me and hired me as a graphic artist at the iconic Capitol Records building. I feel truly blessed to have been adopted into this city where diversity is celebrated."

Now that I have 2 children, they are enjoying the creative opportunities Los Angeles has to offer. My 11 year old son is an aspiring drummer and my 13 year old daughter was a runner up in the LA Arts Day design competition last year!

"Los Angeles represents a mosaic of music, art, architecture, and culture like no other city in the world," Stephen said. "Now that I have 2 children, they are enjoying the creative opportunities Los Angeles has to offer. UPDATES: KEY ISSUES

Culver City: Take Action for Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy!

Culver City is home to a vibrant and diverse arts and culture community dedicated to enriching the lives of all Culver City residents. The City previously supported its arts and culture sector through the work of a dedicated Department of Cultural Affairs. However, this department was dismantled in May 2012 when funding from the Community Redevelopment Agency was lost. Since then, Culver City has no centralized stewardship to support and grow its arts and culture resources.

Arts for LA asks you to contact the Culver City City Council to voice your support for the report's recommendations:

Establish from the General Fund a city Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy department with at least two full-time staff to begin operating in FY 2014/2015.
Allocate funds from the Cultural Trust Fund to conduct a study to establish baseline knowledge of the arts and culture in Culver City and point to areas of economic opportunity.

Send your letter to the City Councilmembers now. Support this important work and help Culver City return to its place as a leader of arts, culture, and the creative economy in Los Angeles County!

California Arts Council Asks Californians to Keep Arts in Schools: Voluntary Contributions via State Tax Forms

Californians will once again have the opportunity to support the California Arts Council and its arts programs for children through their state individual tax refund. Yesterday, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. signed Senate Bill 571 (Senator Carol Liu, La Canada Flintridge), returning the arts to the voluntary contribution portion of California tax return forms through the new "Keep Arts in Schools Fund."

"This is wonderful news for California's young people," said Craig Watson, Director of the California Arts Council. "We hope all those who know arts education results in future success for California's children will take advantage of this opportunity to directly contribute to arts education via their tax return."

He continued, "We are grateful to Senator Carol Liu for shepherding the enabling legislation that allows Californians to directly contribute to arts education through voluntary contributions on their tax form."

Individuals may make tax-deductible contributions in amounts of $1 or more. Arts supporters who use accounting services should tell their tax preparers about contributing to the "Keep Arts in Schools Fund," and encourage others to pursue this opportunity to support California arts education. The California Arts Council will provide detailed information and tutorials on how to contribute as tax season approaches via their website www.arts.ca.gov.

Save the Date: County Supervisor Candidate Forum 4/30

Mark your calendars! Arts for LA invites you to attend a special Creativity & Culture Candidate Forum for candidates seeking election to LA County’s Third Supervisorial District. The forum will take place at LACMA’s Bing Theatre at 7 pm on April 30. Tickets will be required, but will be available free of charge.

The forum will be moderated by Dr. Frank Gilliam of UCLA.

LA County’s Third District has been served for twenty years by Zev Yaroslavsky, whose support of arts, culture, and creativity in LA County has been instrumental in helping our creative sector take huge leaps forward. We thank Mr. Yaroslavsky for his service to Los Angeles County.

LCAP Template Now Available

Arts for LA, in close partnership with Arts for All and the California Alliance for Arts Education, is proud to release a new arts education tool to help school districts throughout Los Angeles County use arts education strategies to address local needs.

As part of the new Local Control Funding Formula process, school districts are required to create a plan outlining how they will achieve goals in 8 state priority areas such as parent engagement, student achievement, and school climate. Because arts education is a powerful tool to achieve a variety of outcomes, Arts for LA and our partners have created a template to help school districts include arts education as a strategy to achieve their unique goals.

Candidate Surveys Released: Vote April 8!

Arts for LA invited candidates in six current elections to complete the Arts & Culture Candidate Surveys. Over the last several weeks, candidates seeking office in Culver City, Lawndale, Long Beach, Long Beach USD, Malibu, and Whittier sent us their thoughts on how arts and culture is a powerful tool to build strong, vibrant communities and schools.

We are grateful to our Regional Partners for supporting these surveys! Thanks to Actors Fund, KCET's Artbound, LA2050, Otis College of Art + Design, and SPARC for helping spread the word, and big thanks to P.S. Arts for supporting the survey effort in Lawndale.

Surveys by Arts for LA have shown 96% of our advocates are registered and engaged voters. You can help keep the arts at the forefront of your city or school district's agenda by voting and staying in touch with your representatives.

Action Alert: Four Ways to Support the California Arts Council Now!

There's great momentum in Sacramento to bolster funding for the California Arts Council. Californians for the Arts and California Arts Advocates are working with state legislators to move two funding bills through the State Legislature to increase arts and culture resources statewide.

Senate Bill 1432 (Ted Lieu) would allocate $25 million to the California Arts Council, while Assembly Bill 1662 (Ian Calderon) would increase funding to a yet-to-be-determined level.

Californians for the Arts and California Arts Advocates are also working within the state's budget process to increase resources for the California Arts Council. All arts advocates are invited to visit Sacramento on April 8 to show support at two scheduled hearings.

"Based on John Arthur Maynard's Venice West, pg. 167-68 only an approximation can be made. The building owner Eugene del Genio served the Haags an eviction notice 23 January 1966. While The Haags win because a judge invalidates the eviction order, John tossed away the keys, "Shortly after his last victory he closed its doors and let everything die, murals, collages, words and all." The Question of when this occurred could be deduced by reading localnewspapers, possibly LAT, that covered the details of the Venice West Cafe struggle. I am guessing March 1, 1966." Stay tuned...

The Venice community continues to celebrate the generous spirit of legendary artist/curator Mark “Sponto” Kornfeld, who nurtured the creative and Love community in Venice, California for 24 years at his 7 Dudley Avenue gallery. This same location housed the infamous Venice West Cafe from 1958 to 1966. It was one of the key epicenters for the burgeoning free-spirited literature and art movement on the West Coast. The Beats shared their exploration of themes such as spirituality, environmental awareness and political activism. Years later, Sponto felt the sacred ground bubbling up from the Beat roots, and created a space to continue in their tradition.

The Venice West Café was the hang-out for many creative people including artist Wallace Berman, photographer Charles Brittin, underground film star Taylor Mead, jazz shaman-comedian Lord Buckley, photographer-filmmaker Leland Auslender, artist Earl Newman, photographer Harry Drinkwater, Robby Kreiger & John Densmore of The Doors, musician Bob Romeo, songwriter Eden Ahbez (writer of Nat King Cole's hit Nature Boy), prop designer-mad scientist Larry Albright, artist Eric "Big Daddy" Nord, sculptor Ron Boise, Ed Cassidy (drummer forSpirit), jazz icon Art Pepper, Larry Lipton (author of The Holy Barbarians), comedian Mort Sahl, drummer Tambu, author Cliford Irving, artist George Herms, author Charles Foster, politicians Al Matthews & Jack Hampton, and social worker Paul Smith.

This important historical venue was a nurturing stomping ground for many poets including: Susan & Stuart Z. Perkoff, Tony Scibella, Frank T. Rios, John Thomas, Anna & John Haig, Aya, Saul White, William Margolis, Clair Horner, Danny Propper, Maurice Lacy, Jack Hirschman, MC Ford, Larry Lake, Bob Alexander, and Kenneth Rexroth.

Numerous groundbreaking poets and artists drew their inspiration amongst the group, including John Altoon, and Philomene Long. It's rumored that Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Lenny Bruce, Leonard Cohen may have hung out there too.

Walk our Mural Tour - Dec. 19

Venice has a rich history of public art, with over 50 murals throughout the neighborhood. Come learn about some of these iconic murals, talk with famous mural artists and learn a little history about this celebrated arts neighborhood.

The VAC will offer TWO tours on Dec. 19. First starts at 7 p.m. and second starts at 8 p.m. Both will start at Danny's, 23 Windward Ave. They will be walking tours, so dress warm and flashlights are encouraged.

The tours will focus on murals between Brooks Ave. and N. Venice Blvd., however the map highlights a number of murals throughout the general Venice Art Crawl area.

Each year Liz's Antique Hardware and The Loft at Liz's contributes to the efforts of Project Angel Food.

This remarkable program delivers over 13,000 meals each week to men, women and children, homebound from HIV/AIDS, cancer or other debilitating illnesses.

The poems of J.D. SMITH's Labor Day at Venice Beach shimmer with a knowing sense of the world's darkness amid its brightnesses.
J.D. SMITH's previous collections of poems include Settling for Beauty, and the edited anthology Northern Music: Poems About and Inspired by Glenn Gould. His poetry, fiction, essays, and reviews appear in journals in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain. Born in Aurora, Illinois, he currently lives and works as an editor and writer in Washington, DC.

Three women from diverse backgrounds take listeners into confessional and harrowing experiences that probe emotional highs and psychological depths. A rare chance to hear these brilliant poets in one place. Not to be missed!

Known as "The L.A. Blueswoman," WANDA COLEMAN was born in the Watts community of Los Angeles in November 1946. Her 22 books includeBathwater Wine, winner of the 1999 Lenore Marshall Prize, andMercurochrome (2001), finalist for the National Book Awards. With the retirement of Black Sparrow Press (now Black Sparrow Books, imprint, David R. Godine, Inc.), her poetry, Ostinato Vamps (2003) and The World Falls Away(2011), continues to be published by the University of Pittsburgh Press. Other honors include Guggenheim and NEA fellowships, and California Arts Council awards (fiction, 1989; poetry, 2002). Twice finalist for Poet Laureate of California (2005, 2012), she was C.O.L.A.'s first literary fellow, Department of Cultural Affairs, Los Angeles (2003-2004). An Emmy-winning scriptwriter (Days of Our Lives) and former columnist (Los Angeles Times magazine), she attributes her creative diversity to workshops and residencies, most notably Budd Schulberg's Watts Writers Workshop (1966), Beyond Baroque Literary Center (1968-75, selected for the George Drury Smith award, 2012), Djerassi Foundation (1989-90), and a Sea Change Cottage residency, Provincetown (2010).

MARIA MAZZIOTTI GILLAN is a recipient of the 2011
Barnes & Noble Writers for Writers Award from Poets & Writers, and the 2008 American Book Award for her book, All That Lies Between Us (Guernica Editions). Her latest book is What We Pass On: Collected Poems 1980-2009 (Guernica Editions, 2010), and she has a book forthcoming in September 2012, The Place I Call Home (New York Quarterly Books). She is the founder /executive director of the Poetry Center at Passaic County Community College in Paterson, NJ, and editor of the Paterson Literary Review. She is also Director of the Creative Writing Program and Professor of Poetry at Binghamton University-SUNY. She has published fourteen books of poetry, including The Weather of Old Seasons (Cross-Cultural Communications), Where I Come From, Things My Mother Told Me, andItalian Women in Black Dresses (Guernica Editions).With her daughter, Jennifer, she is co-editor of four anthologies: Unsettling America, Identity Lessons, and Growing Up Ethnic in America (Penguin/Putnam) and Italian-American Writers on New Jersey (Rutgers).

Los Angeles native AMÉLIE FRANK earned her B.A. in English from U.C. Irvine and set down her creative roots with the Iguana Café. In 1994, she and fellow Iguana poet Matthew Niblock founded The Sacred Beverage Press, producing the acclaimed literary journal Blue Satellite and books by such exceptional scribes as FrancEyE and The Carma Bums, among others. In addition to curating and hosting numerous poetry events and series, she has featured at most of the region's poetry venues, including the prestigious Los Angeles County Museum reading series. In 1999, she was named one of the L.A. Poetry Festival's six Newer Poets, was appointed a Co-Director of the Valley Contemporary Poets, and was elected to the Board of Trustees for Beyond Baroque. In 2002, she "herded hepcats" from San Luis Obispo to San Diego to pose for Mark Savage's The Big Picture, a historic documentary photograph of the largest single-event gathering of Southern California poets. Her efforts prompted California Governor Gray Davis to proclaim April as California Poetry Month.

GERRY FIALKA, host of 7 Dudley Cinema, teams with poets, dancers, and musicians to celebrate Richard Brautigan's fifth poetry publication, which envisions a world where cybernetics has advanced to a stage where it allows a return to the balance of nature and an elimination of the need for human labor.

BEYOND MUSIC - PEOPLE INSIDE ELECTRONICS PRESENTS TREES AND BRANCHES: CAGE, JARVINEN AND TEMPWERKS
TEMPWERKS (CASEY ANDERSON, SCOTT CAZAN, ISAAC SCHANKLER, and ANDREW THOLL) is an ensemble originally created by composer ARTHUR JARVINEN for the performance of his musical compositions in the realm of live electronics, using "non-musical" devices such as Geiger counters, short wave radios, amplified strobe lights, and field recordings. This concert features the LA premiere of multiple works byJarvinen, presented alongside the early electronic music of JOHN CAGE and new original works by TEMPWERKS members.

City of Manhattan Beach Seeks Submissions from Artists for Centennial Public Art Project

Manhattan Beach, CA (July 18, 2012) - The City of Manhattan Beach presents an opportunity to professional artists or artist teams for a permanent piece of public art for the City's Centennial celebration. The artist commission for the project is $130,000, using the City's Public Art Trust Fund, and the selected art piece(s) will be displayed in a prominent location(s) in Manhattan Beach. The purpose of the project is to create an exceptional visual experience for locals and visitors, commemorate the City's past, and inspire future generations.

The Art in Public Places Committee (APPC), comprised of the Cultural Arts Commissioners and community members, will review all submissions. All meetings are open to the public, and members of the community are invited to participate in this public art process.

"Successful visual art in a community can foster discussion, celebrate a City's unique culture, engage and inspire the mind and senses, and anchor a key community place," said Mayor Wayne Powell. "Everyone is greatly looking forward to seeing the submissions."

To obtain a copy of the Request for Qualification (RFQ), please view the, "Call to Artists for City of Manhattan Beach Centennial Art Project" Community News Event or download the Request for Qualification (RFQ) (PDF). The deadline for submissions is Friday, August 3, 2012 at 4:00 PM.

Santa Monica Landmarks Commission Meeting
Monday, July 9, 2012

Following the Landmarks Commission unanimous
vote at their May 14 meeting to nominate Paul Conrad's
"Chain Reaction" sculpture for Santa Monica City
landmark status, and upon completion of the City's
standard 60-day formal review process, the 7 commission
members will vote at their July 9 meeting. Four votes
are needed for passage.

Landmark Designation Criteria
A property is eligible for designation if it meets one or more
of the following criteria:
* exemplifies elements of the city's cultural, social, economic
or political history.
* manifests aesthetic, artistic or other noteworthy interest or value.
* is identified with historic personages or important events in local,
state or national history.
* embodies distinguishing architectural characteristics valuable
for study.
* is the work of a notable builder, designer or architect.
* occupies a unique location or is a familiar visual feature of a
neighborhood.

We urge supporters to attend the meeting AND email messages
supportive of "Chain Reaction" being designated a landmark.

The City offers free validated parking for those who would
like to speak at, or just attend, the public meeting.
Parking is in the large City parking structure just north of
City Hall. Get a validation stub and then insert it in the
parking validation box in the hall area just outside the
2nd floor City Council Chambers, where the Commission
meeting will take place.

"Chain Reaction" was designed and built by the late 3-time
Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist Paul Conrad. The
26-foot-tall nuclear mushroom cloud chain link sculpture
was gifted to Santa Monica through an anonymous $250,000
donation, and , since 1991, has been standing in the Santa Monica
Civic Center. The iconic public art peace monument bears
Conrad's timely message inscribed at it's base:
"This is a statement of peace. May it never become an epitaph."

The Conrad family and community are currently trying to raise
timely funds to help restore and strengthen the sculpture.

Paul Conrad was born June, 27, 1924 and passed away
