In fact, our favorite thing about geometry inspired wedding décor is that you can dress it up or dress it down to suit your tastes. Simple shapes can feel super dramatic—like a backdrop for an on-stage performance or they can be bare bones shaped outlines that provide a frame for a natural scenic backdrop. We love this heptagonal wedding arch. It is such a blank slate that you can make it match any décor by dressing it up with florals of your choice. Placement outdoors could make this piece of décor an especially artistic back drop for exchanging your vows so be sure to play with placement. This arch could also be quite lovely indoors. Let love sweep you off your feet, not a room full of people to greet! After months (or maybe even years!) of planning, you will be surprised at how quickly your wedding day flies by. At the end of it all you will likely feel exhausted. . . and hungry! One way to truly savor the day is to spend it with the people you love the most. So don’t extend an invitation to anyone you feel obligated to or someone who you worry might be offended if left out, or any distant relative you don’t speak to on a regular basis. A smaller guest list will eliminate stress and allow you to spend more time and money entertaining those closest to you. Your wedding day will feel more intimate and warm surrounded by the people who share in your everyday happiness.

Live Bands/Entertainment

One more trend we love is live entertainment. This doesn’t mean you have to do away with the DJ--an experienced MC can be a great asset to assist with your event schedule, make announcements and help guests, and keep the party going long into the night. Some of our favorite events have included an 80’s band getting the crowd off their feet, interacting, and performing with an energy that caused excitement in the room. If you decide on live entertainment make sure you see examples of their performances and get references, or view them performing first hand. Live musicians can also give a special touch to wedding ceremonies. Whatever your style, we’ve seen great musicians carry brides down the aisle with hand drumming pipe playing relaxing yoga vibes, classically stunning violins and harps, or a simply beautiful solo acoustic melody.

Professional Photography & Videography

It makes us cry to think there are brides and grooms out there who decide not to hire professional wedding videographers and photographers. Seriously, just because your friend has an iPhone and computer doesn’t make them a professional. . . plus how awkward would it be to tell your friend the video/photos they shot were terrible or not what you were expecting? Ugh. Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your lives and you are spending lots of money and time and you want to remember it right? Let a professional do what they do best and capture all the details for you-just be sure to ask for samples of their work and decide if it looks professional, fits your style, and works with your budget and needs. If there is an area not to skimp-this one is it!

Honoring Loved Ones Who Have Passed Away on Your Wedding Day

It is a comfort to honor loved ones who have passed away so their memory is with you on your wedding day. There are a number of ways this is done traditionally, with photo charms on your bouquet or a table with photographs or candles. But I have been to so many weddings where this table is overlooked and there is no mention of the significance of missing loved ones to the couple. Personally, I would feel bad if a memory table looked like an after thought. For this reason, I’ve come up with a few ideas to make your loved one’s memory more memorable on your wedding day.

Using an Heirloom or "Something Borrowed" on Your Wedding Day

Why limit your loved one’s memory to a piece of jewelry? For example, did you inherit your Grandma’s china or a dessert tray, or a serving pitcher? Instead of keeping these items in a box, take them out and use them as a special feature on your wedding day. Did your Aunt Betty collect cats? Perfect! Incorporate knick-nacks into the table centerpieces-they will sure get people asking questions and reliving all those happy memories. Did your grandma knit? Feature a sofa at cocktail hour with her cozy creations. Be creative and think outside the box, likely what you remember most about your loved one is apparent in the heirlooms you or other family members saved and will be a source of joy when used in your wedding celebration.

A Memorable Bouquet

It may be meaningful to just select your loved one’s favorite kind of flower or to carry a tiny photo charm attached to your bouquet, but why stop there? Have a keepsake bouquet made featuring a loved one’s favorite brooch or jewelry piece made into a flower or some of Grandpa’s silk ties made into flowers for a bouquet you can treasure and share even after the wedding is through. Or really shake up tradition by accepting flowers as you walk down the aisle with a photo of your loved one attached to it. If you have several loved ones to remember this would work beautifully. Or if you had a parent pass, maybe feature images of the two of you together or accept flowers with a small memento or object to symbolize when they taught you to ride a bike for example. This symbolizes all the loved ones who walked beside you through life-helping you grow into the woman you are today. Ask your officiant to explain the significance before the procession begins.What a lovely and memorable way to honor their memory. If your memorial bouquet is to be kept, be sure to have an alternate for the bouquet toss :)

A Special Dance

Did your mom or dad pass? Were your Aunts super close to you growing up? Dedicate a dance or song to their memory by dancing with their surviving spouse/relative who is also likely feeling their absence and wishing they were there. Choose a song that they liked to keep the moment celebratory of their memory or a song that makes you think of them. You can even choreograph a group dance with your siblings or other significant relatives and have an explanation/intro prepared for the DJ to announce before the dance begins. If a screen is available (projector or TV) think about displaying a photo slide show of your loved ones in the background as you dance,. This would work especially well if you are planning on a slow dance.

Take Home Treat

This one is great if you have a loved one known for their cooking! Make your loved one’s famous cookies and include the recipe to hand out as wedding favors. Or feature a variety of their creations at a dessert buffet table labeled as “Aunt Betty’s Famous Apple Fritters” for example. You could use a wooden spoon attached to a recipe card too. Just get creative!

Invited to a wedding but dreading the gift shopping? While online wedding gift registries can make gift shopping more convenient, it can come with an expensive price tag. Of course you can always buy something small (like a spatula?) but the couple will know exactly how much you spent. So what should you do? Try a thoughtful gift basket filled with things they love. If done right, your gift basket will look like a huge expensive present and the thoughtfulness and time you spent putting it together will make it a truly memorable gift. Choose a theme

When putting together a gift basket, it’s a good idea to choose a theme. For example, if the couple is very outdoor-sy put together a picnic basket filled with things they could use on an outdoor date. Things like 2 packages of trail mix, 2 protein bars, a bottle of wine or champagne, maybe a gift card to subway, a canteen/thermos/reusable plastic water bottles, key chain of a place they’ve traveled and like, matching bandanas, head lamps, chap stick, cozy flannel blanket, hats, or other inexpensive items you can think of.

Are the happy couple into movies? Add some flavored popcorn, hot cocoa, funny mugs, doughnuts, M&Ms and other movie candy, movie tickets, coffee, soda, slippers, etc.

Beach lovers? Matching towels or towels that are personalized in some way(cats print towel, princess towel, you get the idea!), flip flops, sunscreen, beach bag for the basket, Frisbee, funny sunglasses, fun soda or hard lemonades, visors, travel cooler, etc.

Fill the basket

Choose items that are useful and/or personally meaningful to the couple that fit your chosen theme. Choose one or a couple of items to splurge on and then fill the rest in with other inexpensive items. Food is always a great go-to for gift baskets—and it is super affordable. Think carefully about the gift basket itself-it doesn’t have to be a basket. Like in the example above, you could use a nice beach bag for the basket. If you do go the traditional basket route- try looking for baskets in a second-hand store to save some money.

Presentation is everything

After selecting the right basket and items to include it is very important to take the time to display the items in a visually appealing way. In the bottom of the basket place packing peanuts, shipping air bags, crumpled up shipping paper, a cardboard box, something to raise the items in the basket up high enough that all can be seen at a glance—without digging. Next prop up items with bubble mail filling or crumpled up paper and carefully lay sheets of tissue paper, colorful paper shredding, or natural basket filling fibers on top to cover up the stuffing. Arrange your items so they can all be seen usually placing taller items in back and progressing up to smaller items in front. Place your splurge items in a prominent place so attention goes straight to them. Don’t be afraid to give the items space and choose a larger basket. Finally wrap up the entire basket full of items in cellophane with a nice bow on top (clear plastic tape works great to help gather the cellophane). A thoughtful gift (without breaking the bank) to surprise the happy couple.

Small Backyard Wedding on a Budget

Having a backyard wedding isn’t always the cheapest way to go. Even if you keep your guest list on the small side(up to 30 guests), expenses can quickly add up. That said, we’ve come up with a few tips to help you pull off a small stylish backyard wedding on a budget. Warning: a lot of DIY work is required but hey, you’ll get to handle all the details yourself –or at least hand them over to some very devoted friends & family!

Don’t get discouraged!

Venue costs can be a large part of your wedding budget, so think of the money you’ll save by skipping this all together! Well, sort of. . . wedding venues are designed to host events and they’ve got celebrations down to a tee. They’ve got the experience and expertise of countless events under their belt and a list of professionals they like and trust to get the job done right. Planning and executing your own backyard wedding will require a lot of time and effort, organization, and planning on your part but it can be done. You’ve just got to be committed and willing to do the work. Now, let’s get to it!

Something Borrowed. . . Something blue . .

OK LOTS borrowed! And we mean lots! You could rent chairs and tables and plates and cups but we recommend borrowing as much of these items as you can and spending your money to rent table linens and/or chairs covers(if you don’t like the eclectic look) to tie things all together. Use the same chairs for the ceremony and reception. Several dining room tables from friends or family and some indoor chairs or even a few benches would work great for ceremony and reception seating(see image above). Tie flowers or drape swags of inexpensive fabric or ribbon from a craft store along chair backs for a united look. Bring a nice sofa(or sofas) outside for comfy seating and dress it/them up with pillows(new or borrowed) in your wedding colors. If done right- this could result in a very chic/posh look-if done wrong it may look like a redneck gathering—eek! As for eating utensils, plates, and glasses you can rent or borrow these too. Tie eclectic tableware together by mixing and matching patterns/colors/textures from different sets and renting napkins in shades of your wedding colors. Also keep in mind transport of the chairs and tables. . . calling all friends with trucks! (We also found this website where you can purchase table linens atwholesale prices-super affordable!)

The Setting

By planning your wedding for the spring season you should have lots of natural blooms already sprouting. If your backyard needs a little TLC, choose some inexpensive varieties in 6 packs to plant strategically in areas that will be photographed a lot or where a majority of guests will be facing for the ceremony and reception(do this a few weeks in advance of your event because some plants will need time to perk up-if short on time use hardy varieties of plants like succulents or marigolds). Tidy up your yard by weeding and mulching your flower beds as well. Mulch is inexpensive and comes in a variety of colors, is easy to use, and looks good when you lay it down strategically in your outdoor space. Consider purchasing a simple garden arch to decorate as the backdrop for your ceremony. We found the affordable metal one (pictured above) at Target for just $138.

It would be best to have your backyard wedding in a space that could accommodate a separate ceremony and reception space. That way you can set up as much as possible(the tables and table settings, centerpieces and other table décor) before the wedding guests arrive. This will take a huge load off of you and your wedding helpers, and make the festivities transition smoothly. BTW you will definitely need help coordinating the day of your wedding so make sure to have 2 or more family members/friends (who are not taking part in the ceremony) to manage things such as catering, announcements (“Please take your seats the ceremony is about to begin. . ., etc.”), music, guest questions, and other host-ly duties. If you have the budget, a professional coordinator would work nicely too.

Keep in mind the needs of your guests and show courtesy to your neighbors. Especially if you live on a busy street with little parking. Consider encouraging carpooling or Uber for guests and be specific with parking directions. Let your neighbors know you will be having a party and remind them as the date approaches. It probably wouldn’t hurt to include a candy bar or a flower or gift card with a friendly note if you can. Also, consider renting some heaters if the weather gets cool in your area in the evening, be considerate of noise levels(if you don’t want police to shut down your wedding), and stick with a strict end time for your event.

The Food

I’ve heard of wedding potluck receptions but can’t imagine how one would keep everything hot and ready. Best to spend some of your venue savings on food and drinks and save the hassle of dirty dishes, oven duty, reheating, etc. Have your food delivered or catered by Chick-fil-a (order it in advance and make arrangements to pick it up so it is hot and ready when you want it). Why Chick-fil-a? I was at a a huge family reunion that served Chick-fil-a and it was soooo good. They had something for everyone! But you decide. . . Have a drink station available for self serve throughout the event and even a small bar if you like (ask your helpers to keep it stocked & tidy). A dessert bar is super fun too, and could be an option for potluck style sharing with guests!

The Little Things

Details are what can make your backyard wedding shine, and you can take this step as far as you like(or as far as your budget will allow). Check out our previous blog posts on Affordable Wedding Décor for someinspiration. With a good mix of DIY projects and some online shopping you should be able to have fun with this part of the process. We found great onlineresources for renting flowers (centerpieces are just $20!) and with great craft sites like etsy you can get custom work done like this super cute wood sign for under $100(pictured above)! Save money on invitations by going with an e-vite option or find some low cost options like this one from etsy. Have a play list prepared for the day along with some ample speakers, use white Christmas lights for a little nighttime sparkle, install some nice up-lights, and bake your own cake or cupcakes. Don’t forget an easy wedding favor like a cake pop (you can DIY with your bridal party pals or purchase online-$29/dozen on etsy) and be sure to give a generous gift and recognition in your toast to those who help make your day a success. At VW we are huge fans of saving money and of quality products that make life more enjoyable. So we’ve hand selected some of our favorite beauty products to share with you. Hopefully the results and the price tags will bring a smile to your face!

Witch Hazel 16oz for $3.59 at Target

Extracted from plants, this natural astringent is marketed to soothe and relieve minor skin irritations. Several online sites claim witch hazel also helps with oily acne-prone skin, but our favorite use for it is to tame the red irritation and bumps on sensitive underarms and bikini area after shaving. You can buy cleansing pads or just moisten a cotton ball and gently apply it after you step out of the shower. We use it over the course of a week in our beauty regimen when preparing for a special event like a wedding(sleeveless dress anyone?) or for a summer beach or pool party.

Baby Powder 9oz for $2.99 at Target

After years and years and years of searching for a deodorant that works and doesn’t destroy my skin I discovered that I already had the solution. Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder with Aloe is wonderful when applied under arms after a shower. The baby powder leaves skin feeling dry and smooth. Plus there are no more red bumps after shaving and no more discoloration on shirts from pore blocking antiperspirants. On really warm days or after exercising, showering is a must as is drinking lots of water, which is super healthy for skin anyway. Then just reapply and use a natural deodorant like Schmidt’s if necessary. You can get a 9oz bottle of Cornstarch based J&J Baby Powder with Aloe and Vitamin E at Target for 2.99! Also works great for sweaty feet and when sprinkled lightly into flats or shoes!

St Ives Apricot Face Scrub 6oz for $3.59 at Target

Great for exfoliating the skin on your face and neck. This stuff is inexpensive and leaves your skin feeling soft and fresh. I use it once every other day at the most, especially for a week leading up to a special event. I also like to use a gentle facial cleanser like Cetaphil day and night on a regular basis in addition to this great facial scrub. Get St Ives Apricot Face Scrub 6oz for 3.59 at Target.

Neutrogena® Alcohol-Free Toner 8.5 Oz $5.79 at Target

I also recommend Neutrogena® Alcohol-Free Toner for prepping skin a week in advance of a special event. I use it once a day on dry skin after cleansing, usually before bed. If it is the big day then I also use it on dry skin after cleansing and before applying makeup. It helps to reduce oils and the size of pores and makes my skin feel tighter and more youthful. I like to let my skin dry before and after applying it with a cotton ball on the most oily areas of my face (the “T” zone) where my pores usually look bigger.

Vaseline Various sizes $0.99 at The 99 Cent Store

This stuff is great for a number of uses, my favorite being on dry chapped feet and skin, and especially on super dry and irritated patches of skin like on my nostrils when I have a cold or places where I’ve dried my skin out too much using anti-acne products. Rub it into your feet and wear cotton socks over the top to bed, then wash in the morning with a gentle soap like Ivory. I’ve even successfully hidden dry flaking skin by applying foundation then dabbing on vaseline and powder foundation then cover-up liquid foundation and a final dusting of powder foundation. Also works well for chapped dry lips!

Flushable Moist Wipes by Fresh’n Up $0.99 at The 99 Cent Store

These come in small packs that are great for travel. I’ve used for perspiration and on my face and hands. Pleasant subtle scent and super soft though I wish they were thicker. I also get these at 99 Cent Stores.

Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Smoothing Conditioner $2.89 at Target or $4.99 for twin pack of Shampoo and Conditioner

We got a bottle of this shampoo and conditioner on recommendation from our sister-in-law and immediately loved it after just one use. I have normal-oily hair that I dye and so many shampoos and conditioners fail because they leave my hair too dry or overly moisturized with an icky residue feeling. This shampoo and conditioner work perfect to clean and moisturize my hair leaving it looking shiny and soft. Try them in a twin pack from Target for only $4.99 and let us know what your think!

Whether you need some time out with the girls or are looking for new date ideas in Ventura we hope you will find some inspiration here. In our wanderings and eat-er-ings around town, we’ve come across some new experiences and old favorites we’d love to share with you (make sure to visit their websites for hours and availability).

First start the day off with a delicious cup of Lavender Mocha or a Salted Caramel Latte at Palermo: Coffee, Gelato & Gifts 321 E Main Street. They open at 6am Monday through Saturday and Sundays at 7. It’s a great place to map out the rest of your day, relax and chat, or to wake up slowly as you sip and savor. Next you can go on a quick hike at the Ventura Botanical Gardens (a short drive up behind City Hall) or take a short walk to 33 S. Palm Street for a class at A Smart Garden: Eco-friendly Nursery (checktheir calendar of events). Some Saturdays (usually starting around 10) they offer free gardening classes or paid workshops where you can make a succulent wreath or terrarium for example. Not you typical date idea right? Afterwards stop for lunch at Paradise Pantry (our favorite restaurant in all Ventura). Order a cheese plate to share and a seasonal appetizer(always something fresh and new made from locally sourced ingredients) and select the Pantry Caprese grilled sandwich. It is a good size and comes with a side of the most delicious pickles on the planet (honestly the pickles are to die for—seriously I don’t even like pickles but I will fight you for these). After lunch, visit their cheese and wine market next door for some savory souveniers or to shop for fun/edible/alcoholic gifts. Now that you’ve regained your strength continue shopping up and down Main Street and when you start to get hot or hunger for a cold treat visit SubZero at 607 E. Main Street for a less than ordinary dessert. There are a ton of flavor choices even if you can’t consume dairy and your iced treat is prepared right in front of you—actually mixed and then frozen instantly with Nitrogen! It is so cool!

Balloons!

Balloons are not just for birthdays! Use them as an inexpensive decorating embellishment almost anywhere; just keep in mind the wind factor when using them outside. Order balloons of all sizes in one color or in different shades of the same color (pearl, cream, white for example) for a sophisticated look. If you are decorating outside you could line a path with balloons staked down with golf tees. Balloon arches and pillars are also great uses for balloon decoration inside or out. To line walls or entrances or even make an interesting photo booth backdrop indoors, weight clusters or lines of balloons down with cheap balloon weights purchased online or make your own using rocks and opaque baggies or baggies with tissue paper inside to hide the rocks.

Twigs and Twinkles

For a grand look without the large price tag, purchase some large vases from the 99 Cent Store or Dollar Tree. Then go outside and collect some medium or large sized twigs(birch are nice) or branches with leaves(eucalyptus are pretty). You can find LED fairy lights online to weave into the twigs or branches or just use the small white lights you use to decorate at Christmas time. If the vases are too tipsy you can purchase QuakeHold($3.97 Amazon) to secure them to any flat hard surface. Line the vases up to create a statement wall behind the couple’s table or the wedding ceremony altar for example, or if using battery operated lights, try using them as table centerpieces.

Hoop it Up Photo Op

This is so easy, why didn’t I think of it before! Buy a hula hoop from the Dollar Tree store and decorate it, hang it from a tree, and viola! Instant wedding guest photo op! Wrap the hoop in tulle, tie colorful ribbon around it, glue silk flowers or a silk flower vine round it and done! If you would rather not decorate anything, buy a plain white foam core board and cut a hole in it. Cut it to look like a polaroid picture and simply write “smile!” on it. Piece of cake! You could also hang a rope and clip different frames to it(like a picture frame clothes line) so people can line up and pose behind the one they like! Get the frames second hand or make them and write goofy phrases on them. Find printable photo booth props for guests to use to customize their pics & have fun!

The following florals are the jumping off point for our inspiration. A simple wispy bouquet can be made combining some or all of these fantastic florals. The Pincushion flower is our favorite, and in our humble opinion can stand on it’s own in a simple-ly beautiful bouquet. Soft and lacy petals top off long sturdy stems making them hardy cut flowers that are hard to resist. If you long for a fuller bouquet, fill in space with the mini-white Colewort flower, or to add a supremely pleasant fragrance and a trailing element use a purple or lilac shade of freesias. Sweet & Simple

Another super quick and easy DIY jewelry tutorial we found on In Honor of Design’s blog, requires just 4 supplies” wood furniture buttons available at JoAnns Craft stores for $1.87 per 30 pack, some nail polish, earring flat backs available at Michaels Craft stores $2.99 for 60 pieces, and some super glue. You can paint the wooden buttons as pictured for the Kate Spade look described in IHOD's blog article, or create your own design (in your wedding colors perhaps?) and glue on the studs to complete. Voila: instant style!

DIY Recycled Necklace Head Piece

This project requires a tiny bit more skill as you will be using a needle and invisible thread instead of glue. I had a lot of bling-y necklaces from being a bridesmaid several times and selected two that looked good together. Next, I purchased a spool of silver ribbon for $1 at the Dollar Tree and cut 2 pieces the same length (enough to fit around my head and tie easily into a bow behind). Next I used a needle and thread to first sew one necklace in the middle of one ribbon (making loops around the entire length of the necklace) and then doing the same with the other. Next, I tied the ribbons (with attached necklaces) together in a knot at the end of both necklaces and then tied them around my head for a supper classy look.

Pancake Breakfast( or Lunch or Dinner)

Who doesn’t love pancakes? I once called up a friend on a whim and offered to bring over some pancakes. I didn’t realize how this unexpected surprise could brighten someone’s day or that it would turn into an awesome party where we were joined by neighbor friends and called up any others who were available to come join us. It led to laughing and sharing memories over a mountain of my fav chocolate chip pancakes, several cups of coffee, and even meeting new friends. Overall it was a fun, laid back time with friends I would highly recommend!

Pinterest Party

All right all you Pinners out there, you’ve been plenty inspired now lets put those projects to the test! Have your friends select a couple of Pinned projects they really want to try and do them as a group. This could be anything from homemade facial masques and beauty products to no-sew recycled t-shirt purses. Try a party game, learn a new dance move, or even build something! Just don’t try the homemade hot sugar wax hair removal (messy and painfully wrong in so many ways!).

Flashback Freak Out Party

This one is for when your feeling nostalgic and/or goofy. Choose your favorite childhood or teenage throwbacks and mash them into one big party. Each person could show up with a favorite candy or flashback food (Celeste individual pizzas and fruit by the foot for me!), wearing something “historic” (like flare jeans) or funny (think school spirit days like crazy hair day or pajama day), and organize a series of activities like flash dancing to your favorite old songs, put some of your favorite old pictures together in a short movie, watch an old Disney favorite, or recreate a legendary day like the great food fight of 6^th grade.

Dating Tips for the New Year 2017

For those of our VW fans who are busy dreaming of their wedding day, dream away. . . but if you haven’t found your other half yet, we’ve got some great dating tips to get you off to a good start in the New Year!

1) One Date, One Chance

First impressions will tell you a lot about people, so pay attention! Any annoying habits like repetitive checking texts while talking, bad toenail hygiene and body maintenance, constantly talking about themselves while not asking about you, etc. should automatically disqualify a person from getting a second date. Period. Anything that annoys you now will just get worse! Respect yourself and respect your time by following this simple dating tip.

2) Date A Lot of People

If you follow the one date, one chance advice above be prepared to go on a lot of dates! You have the right to be picky about who you choose to spend your time with and should obviously consider very carefully anyone you hope to have a long term relationship with. Always try to have fun and always try to be kind to the other person. This way you should have few regrets and avoid getting discouraged in your hunt for Mr. Right. Speaking of regrets. . .BEWARE anyone who tries to get physical on the first date as this is a sign they are NOT looking for a long-term relationship.

3) Consider Online Options

Heck, we do everything else online! Online resources like Match.com and eharmony.com cost money so the people on there are likely looking for serious relationships. On Match.com, there is even a section for people to describe what kind of relationship they are looking for(just for fun or serious relationship, for example). Of course, keep safety first when preparing for online dating. Talk to the person and “vet” them for a couple months over email and phone (don’t give out personal information like where you work or live, etc.) and if you do decide to meet, do it in a well-lit populated place you are comfortable with for safety and even tell a friend where you are going and who you are going to meet (even have them wait for you to call and confirm you got home or the date is going ok). If there is anything that makes you uncomfortable about the person, leave. For example, if they start talking about how they’d love to have you over at their secluded cabin in the woods. . . get outta there! In all honesty, I had great experiences online dating and also some very funny stories to tell. Several friends & family have met their spouses this way too. It’s worth trying.

4) Dating is an investment

Dating takes time and money. Be prepared to invest yourself in the process of searching for your special someone. Take care of yourself so you feel your best and have fun sharing great cups of coffee, dinners, or even some tasks that you have wanted to do anyway like invite him and his dog to meet you and your pup at a dog park for a date, try out the new yogurt shop, visit a zoo, etc. Don’t let yourself get discouraged, this is a process of discovering what exactly you are looking for and maybe even becoming a stronger, better, you too!

Tying the Knot in Unusual Places

For the bride and groom who like to think outside the box, this one’s for you! We thought of some unconventional spaces to have a wedding and then Googled them to find out if they existed. Even if these specific sites are not located near you, they are a jumping off point of inspiration for you to either approach a site (and see if they will work with you), or to search for similar venues close by. Some locations may be less expensive and they will definitely all be more memorable than the usual cookie-cutter wedding ceremony banquet hall.

Who doesn’t love donuts? Plus think about all the money you’ll save on that over-frosted buttercream and fondant covered wedding cake! In all honesty, we selected this location type at midnight. . . while hungry! BUT IT TRULY EXISTS! Brought to you by our resident bookworm. Whether you envision a quirky or elegant affair we found actual sites for your inspiration pleasure. The first is The Last Bookstore in Los Angeles, CA. Definitely memorable, playful, and full of cozy nooks for snuggling (and some awesome wedding photos too!) you have to check this place out! Vintage inspired weddings would also work great in this kind of setting as bookstores are becoming more of a rarity in our technology driven world. If elegant is your cup of tea, you may also consider a library like the Peabody Library (http://peabodyevents.library.jhu.edu/) in Baltimore, Maryland.

College Campus

Many college campuses take great pride in the history of their school and in the school grounds and facilities. Some even advertise facility rental for outside weddings and events. Check with your local college campuses to see what they offer, or if they are open to working with your. From experience, we can recommend a relaxing evening of cooking demonstrations, free tea, food tasting, and in-store discounts at SpiceTopia. Located at 576 E. Main St., Ventura, CA 93001 SpiceTopia is a foodie/gourmet’s dream offering free samples of several of their locally produced products. They also sell lots of spices and loose-leaf teas you can scoop yourself. Whether you are into cooking or not, you’ll be sure to enjoy tastes of the menu creations by professional Chef Amy as she provides recipes and insider tips before your eyes. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and afterwards buy items used in the meal prep demo at discounted prices. It is a very small group setting and most comfortable and laid back. A $35 class fee includes a complete recipe book, the two hour class and sampling of all the dishes on that evening’s menu. Each class begins promptly at 6:30 pm and ends at 8:30. Next one is October 20^th. Check their website for other dates and menus.

Food Tasting Tour: Downtown Ventura

Another experience we can recommend from experience is Downtown Ventura Food Tasting Tours. If you like food and a laid back stroll downtown, you’ll like this leisurely tour. The tour lasts 3 hours and 30 minutes and takes you to six different locations in downtown Ventura. The price includes all taxes and tips plus wine tasting for just $59 per person. The great thing about the latter is I hire a few licensed technicians and we show up wherever the party likes. The girls can then eat, drink, and be merry in their hotel rooms, houses, and beachfront rentals. It's fun side-by-side chatting as a few get done at once, champagne in hand of course!

We offer Spa Pedicures, Manicures, and Gel services for either one. We can be available for on site repair in case someone breaks or messes up a nail prior to celebration as well. 99% of people appreciate that we speak English so communication is clear. Felt Acorn Name Cards on etsy

Table Settings

We found these sweet felt acorns on etsy to use for our place card inspiration. Find a font you like and print out your guest’s names on plain white paper. Glue an actual acorn—it can be spray-painted or dipped in glitter, whatever and glue it the name card. Easy Peasy! And pretty too! Set your name card on plain white plates with a solid color napkin or simply choose a bold colored plate for your place settings.

Incorporate twigs into your table décor with a table runner for rectangular tables or these simple candle and twig vases for centerpieces on round tables. Also simple, pretty, and affordable.

Wedding Invitations & Stationary

We couldn’t find a great image for our simple wedding invite vision so here’s the general idea: chose a cool font that is also easy to read and print out your invitation on a single, one-sided sheet of cardstock using ¼ or ½ of a regular sized sheet of cardstock paper. Leave room for a leaf design you will create with a leaf puncher (like a three-hole punch but in a leaf shape). One leaf is all it takes, though you can do more if you like. Its as easy as print, punch, seal! Sweet! Just change the message to Thank You and you’ve got every base covered.

Ceremony Décor

Line the aisle with pillar candles or a pairing of pillar candles of various heights at each row of chairs or every step as in the picture (above). Add some LED twig lights to any wedding arch or even use them as swag between the rows of seats lining the aisle. Simply beautiful, especially on a fall evening!

If you have the party budget, you may even decide to have a catered event (speak with the company to find out how many servers or how much food they recommend). If you are having a smaller dinner party, it might be fun to hire a personal chef who prepares the food before you. An entertaining and elegant touch for more intimate events! What’s better thank getting all dressed up and partying with your glammed up friends? Creating fun photo memories too! Set up a photo booth, designate a photographer for the evening, and be sure to have a sign reminding your guests where they can share the pictures they take that evening. You could have props, a fun back drop or green screen or a hanging film strip cut out for multiple friends at once! You will be able to find lots of free printables online or could order a number of red carpet party items for a relatively low price! Be sure to accents with festive lighting, stars, and glitter!

This was especially fun at a party I attended where the fathers-in-law were selected as best dressed couple for the matchhing Hawaiian shirts they donned after the tuxes got “too stuffy.”
