Week eight of work experience at The People’s History Museum and Terry & David have had a great day. David had arrived before us and was helping to clean up the children’s area by the front desk. We all signed in and then put our coats away. Terry went on the front desk to begin the day while David went round cleaning the cabinets & pictures, they then switched over and David did reception duties and Terry walked round Gallery One and Two. We had a short break and shortly returned back to work. David returned to the front desk while Terry walked around the gallery. They had one last switch over before we finished. After lunch Terry and David both enjoyed looking round the new Ghost Disappearing Histories Exhibition. It is all about Moss Side and Hulme and the nightclubs of the 50’s-80’s and the role they played in building and sustaining the community. Before we left we finished the day off with a couple of songs by the Monkees on the Duke Box.

During the day both Terry and David both mentioned how quick the time at the Museum had gone.

Week number Seven at the Museum & Terry & David got right into working. They polished all the glass throughout the building, stairs and the front of the upstairs gallery doors. They then had a quick tea break before taking it in turns working on reception. They worked in the galleries and they both really feel comfortable with what they are doing. A big thank you to the People’s History Museum staff for all the support they have given to Terry & David throughout their work experience.

Terry & David got stuck into polishing throughout the whole gallery. They both worked really hard having a well deserved brew when they had finished. They then took it in turns to cover reception; David had the first stint then Terry the second in between working on Gallery One & Two. Duties on reception included pricing up books, cleaning the shop, passing out maps and by using the counters they kept a count of everyone coming in. It was a busy morning with lots of children coming in. Both seemed very comfortable and are gaining new skills as they attend each week. We finished our morning with Terry’s request for Michael Jackson on the duke box. A good morning had by them both.

He also offered maps & busy bee trails for the children & when the children left offered them lollipops or balloons for taking part. We had a short break and on return we cleaned up the shop area and put everything in the right place before dusting around. David then worked in Gallery One & Two, it was quite busy and a lot more people were looking around. David remembered to restock the matchbox making area as it was getting quite low, picked up rubbish and kept on top of it all very well. We ended our session with a song on the duke box, David choose Isaac Hayes’ ‘Theme from Shaft’. We both enjoyed lunch in the café at The People’s History Museum & then signed out for the day. David wished everyone a nice day & that he would see everyone next week.

David worked on the front desk, keeping the shop tidy, helping people when they arrived at the museum, giving out maps and selling badges.

Terry monitored Gallery One & Two making sure no one took photographs with the flash on to prevent damaging the banners, kept a check on rubbish and checked for supplies in the matchbox section. Terry also enjoyed using the radio and they both communicated with everyone letting them know their whereabouts. Terry worked between each floor. They switched positions with each other twice before the day ended.

Terry & David enjoyed their morning before leaving to go for lunch.

Tuesday the 10th of July the second day of work experience at The People’s History Museum. David was away on holiday so it was just Terry this week. We arrived at the Museum and put our bags and coats away. Terry then remembered to sign in & put on his pass. Terry enjoyed learning how to meet and greet, hand out maps and direct people to the areas they wanted to see. We had a short break for a cup of tea. We then stayed in the Gallery areas cleaning up & helping people when needed. Terry also learned/liked radioing when he wanted to try a different part of the museum. We looked at the St. Peter Loo massacre and the events that took place. After we finished we went onto the top floor & put on a Nina Simone record on the Duke Box. We then went for lunch in Manchester, before we returned to Venture Arts, we went and looked at the St. Peter Loo massacre memorial plaque.
