Genome sequencing has rapidly moved from costing a million dollars to sequence a human genome in 2007 down to close to $1,000 today. With the practicality of costs has come enormous amounts of data available for analysis to drive the development of more personalized medicine by predicting disease risk and more effectively treating devastating diseases such as Parkinson’s, Cancer and ALS. As better tools have been produced to interpret the complex data, new companies and opportunities have emerged, from biotech and diagnostic organizations, to personal genetics groups and testing laboratories.

With these scientific breakthroughs comes a host of issues and opportunities – for example future technologies to enable new tools such as cell phone sequence monitoring; social engineering innovations to secure shared trait data and interpretation software; and the evaluation of cost and business models. The NHHTC produces a series of educational programs to support entrepreneurship and provide high-level resources to rapidly growing companies.

At the Entrepreneur Forum, companies present their business challenges to a panel of industry experts, and receive board-level and executive advice on how best to address their challenges, all in front of a live audience.

The panel acts as venture advisors for an evening and provides feedback and potential solutions to challenges faced by entrepreneurial companies based on their own professional experiences and expertise.

Eric Emmons heads Siemens Venture Capital's Energy Fund and is based in Boston, MA. He focuses on investments in energy, materials, and industrial technologies. Young Impact's Stephen Douglass is known for organizing impromptu breakdance battles and his masterful ability to focus teams to get amazing work done in high-pressure situations. Stephen's engaging, fun-loving, and brutally straight-forward facilitation style has been referred to as delicious "secret sauce."

Stephen launched a youth center outside of Scranton, PA (yes, The Office) at 16 with a group of rogue teens. He sought to curb underage drinking in the community after his friend died in an underage drunk driving accident. Since then, he's founded multiple startups, worked in investment banking and distressed private equity, and consulted for a number of for- and non-profits. Stephen continues to advise students and student ventures within the Young Impact network, host StartUp Scrambles, and rabble-rouse as a speaker and consultant across campuses and companies.

Previously, Stephen was captain of a nationally-ranked NCAA gymnastics team. He enjoys being coerced into flipping for crowds of rowdy Scramblers. After living on the road for the better part of a year, he's found a new home at MassChallenge courtesy of Babson's Blank Center and attends Babson's MBA program. What better way to kick off the new year (albeit a bit belatedly) than with a Hadoop MeetUp? We've gotten support from Cloudera, Fidelity, Hadapt, and MapR for this kick-off event. The agenda we've lined up is geared more towards the beginner Hadoop user, but there will certainly be experts in attendance if you're looking to strike up a more technical discussion. The kind folks over at Fidelity have offered up conference room space. Cloudera, Hadapt, and MapR will be providing food (of the sandwich or pizza variety) and drinks (of the soda and beer variety). We'll kick things off at a bit past 6pm, run these three lectures until around 7:30, and then have an hour or so to drink beer and chat.

You'll notice that there is a cutoff for RSVPing. Fidelity has some security procedures that we need to follow, specifically (a) a guest list a few days in advance and (b) photo ID for each attendee. It would be a shame to have to turn someone away because they're not on the list we give to Fidelity, so please sign up if you intend to come.

Abstract:

Data visualization has emerged as a primary technique for understanding large datasets. The past decade's surge of available data inspires much discussion about visualization techniques. The discussion tends to focus on a visual language for static presentation, but rarely addresses the range of interactions that are possible in a digital environment.

How do you design interactions that make a user able to navigate, understand, and appreciate their data?

Fathom Information Design, a Boston-based design and software consultancy, has explored and developed dynamic interfaces suited to address different scenarios for their clients. Drawing on this portfolio, Mark Schifferli will show examples of how interaction techniques can further push an audience’s understanding of a complex data set.

Bio:

Mark Schifferli likes to make life easier through computing. His programming career started at Target Analysis Group, where he processed and analyzed nonprofit revenue data. After seeing his first data visualization application, he was hooked on teasing meaningful stories from large and complicated data sets. This led him to join EnerNOC, an energy management company, where he developed applications for critical real time decision making during electrical grid emergencies.

Prior to programming, Mark contributed to various ensembles in San Francisco's experimental music scene as a guitarist and recording engineer. Mark graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Indiana University, Bloomington, with a B.A. in Philosophy and minors in Math and French.

Prior to joining Gartner, Mr. Morency spent 14 years in technical, marketing and IT industry consulting, managing a wide range of services that included total cost of ownership, network complexity and infrastructure consolidation analyses. In addition, he is a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), was a member of the Emergency Management program at Boston University, and has also served as the Training Committee chairperson for the Boston chapter of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA).

Session 1: Intro to Claims-based Identity & the Windows Identity Foundation (WIF)

Claims-based identity is the new and preferred way to model security in distributed applications. The Windows Identity Foundation (WIF) is Microsoft's update to the traditional .NET security system to integrate claims into ASP.NET and WCF. Windows Identity Foundation introduces important concepts like conversion of security tokens and credentials to claims, claims transformation and claims-based authorization. In this session you will learn the basics of the WIF programming model and how WIF integrates into existing .NET code.

Session 2: Outsourcing Applications & Federation: Windows Azure & the Azure
Access Control Service (ACS)

Identity federation and external authentication are enablers for many cloud based application scenarios. The Windows Azure Service Platform and Windows Azure in particular allows hosting federated applications in an easy and secure way. Furthermore the Azure Access Control Service provides an easy interface to federate with a multitude of identities and protocols like WS-Federation, WS-Trust, OpenID and OAuth. This gives you federation gateway services in the cloud without you having to deal with uptime and scalability.

Co-Founder, Employee or Consultant? The title of your team members.

The entrepreneur of the budding business needs to have more than a mere idea. He/she needs to have fleshed out feasibility from market needs and product development perspectives (i.e., it can be done and its needed) before approaching others. He/she also needs to have validated the concept with a number of people in market. The more research the better (a) to prove to potential team members that this is a serious idea and that the entrepreneur is serious about building a business around them, and (b) to winnow out good team-members from the pool of prospects.

While the entrepreneur may know that he/she needs the help of others, in what role should they be brought onboard? Not every team member can be a founder, nor, should they all be be consultants. Roles depend on a number factors, e.g., whether the entrepreneur can afford to pay the new team member now or to mortgage equity for the future, the level of commitment does the new team member have to the on-going success of the business.

Perhaps more importantly, how should responsibilities be divided among the team. Can the entrepreneur afford to maintain his/her role of “jack of all trades” after the team is built — or can he/she revert back into an area of expertise? How about the rest of the team members?

During a brief technical interlude in our program, we will touch on architecting the mobile app from flow design, work flow and user interaction perspectives

February's JavaScript Meetup will be presented by, Eric Strathmeyer, who will be speaking on the Promises Pattern in JavaScript.

If you're writing JavaScript in 2012, you're dealing with callbacks. The common method of supplying a callback function as a parameter works fine for small cases, but can quickly get unmanageable as the complexity of your code increases.

The Promises pattern offers programmers an escape from callback hell.

We'll begin with jQuery Deferreds, the first place most programmers are likely to encounter (a version of) the Promises pattern. We'll then discuss jQuery Callbacks, and wrap up with a quick look at the node-promise library.

After the presentation | demonstration, we will go around the room introducing ourselves and asking the group for advice | opinions on any JavaScript-related issues members are facing.

This meeting is being hosted by SignedOn, located on Floor 4 at 373 Washington St, Down-Town Crossing, MA. A one minute walk from State T station.

Michael Sullivan is a partner with Ashcroft Law Firm, in Boston, MA. He is an expert in health care, government program fraud, corporate compliance and ethics, corruption, and corporate security, and has extensive policy and regulatory experience. In 2001, Sullivan was appointed U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts. While there, he created a National Security and Anti-Terrorism section and units devoted to computer crime, intellectual property theft and health care fraud.

In 2006 the President appointed Sullivan Acting Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. He was nominated Director in 2007 and served until January 2009. As the BATF Director, Sullivan led the agency’s 5,000 employees who are charged with regulating firearms, investigating illegal trafficking of alcohol and tobacco, and preventing terrorism. Previously Sullivan was Plymouth County District Attorney (1995 to 2001) and served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1991-1995).

Before government service, Sullivan was with the Gillette Company for 16 years, starting as a stock clerk and holding positions in human resource management, quality operations and Assistant to the President. He has also practiced law with McGovern & Sullivan, P.C. and Bolles & Pritchard. Sullivan received his undergraduate degree from Boston College and his Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School.

MacDonnell Ulsch is the CEO and Chief Risk Analyst at ZeroPoint Risk Research, LLC, in Boston, MA and is the author of the book "THREAT! Managing Risk in a Hostile World" [2008]. He is a subject matter expert in information governance, risk, and counter-economic espionage. Ulsch created the risk profiling methodology known as the Enterprise Threat Index (ETX) PRISM or Predictive Risk Impact Scenario Modeling, which was designed to reduce illicit intellectual property acquisition and identity theft. He was at the National Security Institute for many years and worked with Senator Sam Nunn on information policy and was an advisor to the Presidential Counterintelligence Office. He was Director of Global Risk at PricewaterhouseCoopers and vice president of security and chief analyst at Dun & Bradstreet-Dataquest. Currently, he is advising a 2012 presidential campaign on intellectual property and trade secret protection and is an advisor to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. With Michael Sullivan, he recently published an article on intellectual property protection. Ulsch was one of novelist Dan Brown’s sources for the best selling technological thriller “Digital Fortress,” set in the U.S. security and intelligence community.

Gururaj “Desh” Deshpande, Ph.D., is chairman of Sparta Group LLC, A123 Systems (AONE), Sycamore Networks (SCMR), Tejas Networks, Sandstone Capital and HiveFire. He was also a founding investor in Airvana, Cimaron, Webdialogs and Relicore.

Prior to co-founding Sycamore Networks, Dr. Deshpande was founder and chairman of Cascade Communications Corp.

Dr. Deshpande serves as a member of the MIT Corporation, and his generous donations have made possible MIT's Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation. In July 2010, Dr. Deshpande was appointed by President Obama to the Co-Chairmanship of the National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, a group established to support US President's innovation strategy.

In the fall of 2011, Dr. Deshpande co-founded the Pond-Deshpande Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of New Brunswick. Dr. Deshpande is also a trustee of the Deshpande Foundation that promotes three principles – innovation, entrepreneurship, and scale – in its pursuit of economic development.

Dr. Deshpande holds a B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology - Madras, an M.E. in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick in Canada, and Ph.D. in Data Communications from Queens University in Canada.

Jack M. Wilson, Ph.D., is President-Emeritus and University Distinguished Professor of High Education, Emerging Technologies and Innovation, University of Massachusetts. He works on projects throughout the University, but his home campus is UMass Lowell. He is also working on several projects in Science Education at UMass Boston. He serves on the board of the UMass Memorial Medical Center. He served as the 25th President of the University of Massachusetts system, from September 2, 2003 to June 30, 2011.

Dr. Wilson served as the President (interim) of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate from July 1, 2011 to January 1, 2012. Prior to that he served on the Board of the EMK Institute.

He is a former Professor of Physics, Department Chair, Research Center Director, Dean, Vice President, Provost, and a private sector entrepreneur who founded the ILinc Corporation. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and has received many awards for his work in technology in education, higher education policy, and technology driven economic development.

While President at UMass Dr. Wilson launched a number of new initiatives at the University during his eight year term including: The University of Massachusetts School of Law at Dartmouth; The Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center - a joint venture with MIT, Harvard, Boston University, Northeastern, EMC, and CISCO; The President's Science and Technology Fund; three NSF Engineering Research Centers and an NSF Math Science Partnership; and the President's Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property Technologies Fund.

Wilson received his A.B. from Thiel College, Greenville, Pennsylvania, and his MA and Ph.D. from Kent State University, Kent, Ohio.

This first workshop, which will run from 9-12, is geared towards the beginner. For the main project example we looked across dozens of publicly available big datasets and examples. Many are very interesting, but very complex, and so the thought was to start with basic and popular text analytics examples; and from there extend into more advanced algorithms/apps.

The workshop will be in the Horace Mann room which is the large room on the first floor. In the afternoon, we will have access to the side rooms (as one walks past the reception area these are on the right).

A “super-event” with two panels, a hackathon and 40+ tabletop technology exhibits.

Panel #1: Three co-founders of MIT’s Auto-ID Center, where “The Internet of Things” was invented, look back at how far the technology has come and where it is headed.

Panel #2 looks at the synergy between RFID and NFC — contactless data interchange for mobile phones — in applications ranging from retail to healthcare.

The NFC Hackathon pits developer against developer as they compete for prizes by building new solutions on the spot that showcase NFC mobile phone applications.
