Prerequisites

This event is perfect for you if:

You know Python language basics, including dictionaries, lists, for loops, and writing functions
You are comfortable looking up Python information when you need it (example: if you needed to learn about generating random numbers in Python, you'd be comfortable with Googling for and reading through the relevant documentation)

and at least one of the following is true:

You want to practice writing programs in Python from scratch
You want to learn about and practice more advanced Python/CS concepts, like classes and object-oriented programming
You want to learn about and practice using useful Python libraries, for example to talk to a database, make graphs, or create graphical games

DETAILS

We're going to discuss the re-write of Objective Logistics' flagship software MUSE atop a new open source project they created called Nimbus (C#): an integrated MVC, business services and business object, repository, and page caching framework that is designed for speed, scale, and to take advantage of Windows Azure services (e.g. caching) in pursuit of building mobile web, native mobile, and desktop web based apps.

There will also be an opening talk - we will make a final decision on that topic in the coming weeks. We have a couple of great options. Stay tuned!

Matt has been a programmer since the age of 13. After starting a marketing aggregation software company in his teens he attended the University of Massachusetts for computer science. He has built financial software for State Street Global Advisors, schedule optimization software for ClickSoftware, and most recently spent 4 years as a director of product management at Oracle. Matt likes building stuff (recently things of the culinary sort) and is interested in mathematics, machine learning, non-linear optimization, literature, and studying new languages.

Keynote: Lessons Learned in Impact Creation through Tech Innovations, by Ray Stata, Cofounder and Chairman of the Board at Analog Devices

Ray Stata was cofounder of Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI), in 1965. ADI initially focused on operational amplifiers but later expanded into other linear IC’s including data converters and subsequently in digital signal processors (DSP), forging the integration of analog and digital circuits for signal processing applications.

Mr. Stata served as CEO of the company from 1971 to 1996. He has been Chairman of the Board since 1973 and continues to serve in this capacity.

Mr. Stata is active in the high technology industry and in public service. Throughout his career Mr. Stata has committed himself to numerous programs to develop learning skills in our youth, promote interest in engineering education, and establish quality as a key cultural value for people and corporations around the world.

As co-founder and the first President of the Massachusetts High Technology Council, Mr. Stata advocated that engineering education and university research funding were a shared responsibility of government and industry. As a member of Leaders for Education, he joins other business leaders in a continuous effort to reform K-12 education particularly as it related to in urban communities and as it related to nurturing interest in math and science.

At the federal level, he served on the Executive Committee of the Council on Competitiveness from 1987 to 2005. Mr. Stata’s service on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Board of Overseers stemmed from his professional commitment to total quality management.

A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Mr. Stata holds a BSEE and MSEE from MIT, and was until 2010 the Chairman of the Visiting Committee of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. In 1984 he was elected to MIT’s Corporation and served as a member of its Executive Committee until 2010. In 1987-1988 he served as President of the MIT Alumni Association.

Living in coastal New England, it is easy to overlook a key resource challenge that much of the world faces: water scarcity. Less than 1% of the planet’s water is available for human consumption, and much of that is not fit to consume without costly treatment. Over the next 25 years, fresh water demand will be 40% higher than the available supply. As an increasingly scarce resource, water is fast becoming a focus of international relations – as well as a driver for emerging technologies.

Many start-up company innovators in Boston’s entrepreneurial ecosystem are already at work to addressing the problem of water scarcity. At this final MIT Innovation Series event of the year, we’ll hear some of hottest water tech innovators in the Boston area discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by the growing global demand for fresh water.
