Finally after hours of work over the past weekend, I was able to get the extension to work again with the new verizon web site. I only tested it with family plan in the "east region". Let me know if it doesn't work for you. I may not have much time to look at it until a week later.

Finally, I fixed the problem that caused the extension to fail in firefox 2.0.

This one took me quite a while to figure out. Apparently Verizon started to check the http header "Referer" when serving login request to make sure the request comes from a user visiting their web site, not from a robot like this extension. I then naturally set the referer header value in my XMLHttpRequest. But it turned out that it's not supported by firefox 2.0, for security reason I think. (But if that were the case, it's really lame. )

Anyway, I finally figured out some other way to add the referer value to the header before the request was sent out to Verzion.

I am sure they will make more changes later...

(for those interested, the change I made to fix the problem is to add the referer field to the login request. Apparently Verizon started to check that field on their side. )

note: it's discovered that this version doesn't work with firefox 2.0. i am still investigating a solution...

In light of the latest discussion on Digg, I have a few things to clarify.

I have had no problem hosting the extension on the Mozilla update site, until Verizon complained about the extension. I fixed a problem they claimed to cause excessive load on their servers, talked to Verizon and they said they were ok with the newer version. However since then, all my contacts with Mozilla were lost -- they never returned my email and refused to re-host the extension. I couldn't publish any update to the TMobile extension either.

I never intended to write a program to spam Verizon/TMobile's servers. Unfortunately there is no more "efficient" way to pull the data from Verizon. Ideally if wireless providers really wanted to provide consumers with this kind of data (not just #min, which is too passive and with no alert capabilities), they could have easily provided some efficient APIs to do it.

Having said that, I do agree with some readers that the default 5 minute interval is probably too frequent under the current circumstance. Therefore I have updated the latest version 0.84 here .(save the file locally and then open it from Firefox: File->Open File...)

Verizon Minutes Used Firefox Extension Version 0.7/0.8

Version 0.7 has the following features:

support firefox 1.5.0.1
added the option "Show usage in red if it exceeds" to show the usage in red when it exceeds a given threshold.
added current month usage projection (for peak or peak+off peak only)
added display of last statement date
added the option "Check the usage now" to the status bar context menu

Version 0.8 fixed the problem displaying number > 1000 (with comma in it).

If you get an error message about invalid phone number, you probably need to update your profile. Go to the Verizon Wireless web site and try to login using your user name/password, you will see the update request. Updating the profile will resolve the problem.

Version 0.6 has the following features:

configure what usage number is displayed in the status bar. Choices are: peak only, peak + off peak (for users whose off peak minutes are not free).

show the last call information for the phone number specified in the option menu when family plan total is displayed.

if you are using firefox 1.5.0.1, please upgrade to version 0.7.

Version 0.5 has the following fixes, most importantly the fix to address users in the western region that haven't been able to get the extension to work. apologies to those users as you need to understand i have only tested it with a user account in the eastern region.

added the "region" option. for now you need to guess its value if it's not obvious to you. and if it doesn't work, try another region. so far i only identified two regions: east and west. (thanks to Brad Templeton for helping me use his account.)

fixed the infinite loop problem when login failed due to incorrect region.

corrected parsing error in collecting weekend and in-off peak minute usage. (thanks to Phil Figler for pointing it out.)
