In response to an increase in hate crimes in Vermont, VTIFF and nearly 60 cultural organizations in the state, have signed the following statement promoting inclusion, respect, and change in their communities.

“Last month, the FBI reported that hate crimes in Vermont increased for the second year in a row, and are now at their highest level since 1995. The evidence of escalating hatred and bigotry is right here in Vermont. There are dozens of examples from Burlington to Brattleboro, St. Johnsbury to Bennington. As cultural leaders, we stand against hate and violence and we will take action.

“We have come together to commit our cultural organizations to the vital work of promoting inclusion, respect, and change in Vermont communities. We know that the arts and humanities have the power to create and nurture empathy, promote critical thinking and thoughtful reflection, offer healing strategies, and advance understanding across differences such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, and age. In 2019, each of our organizations will undertake programming that advances dialogue and healing in our communities. We invite other cultural organizations across the state to join us to reject bigotry, work for a kinder and more thoughtful Vermont, and build creative, healthy, welcoming communities for all.”

A list of participants as of December 5 is HERE.

Organizations who have signed the statement will be invited to nominate representatives to join a planning committee for a meeting in early 2019. We anticipate that this meeting will be one of a series of coalition-building meetings across the state by Vermont’s arts and culture leaders who represent a diverse and broad-based community.

If you’d like to join the coalition, contact one of the following:

Lydia Clemmons, Clemmons Family Farm, (802) 310-0097
Christopher Kaufman Ilstrup, Vermont Humanities Council, (802) 262-1351
Karen Mittelman, Vermont Arts Council, (802) 828-5420

The post Cultural Leaders Take Action first appeared on VTIFF.

The post Cultural Leaders Take Action appeared first on VTIFF.

“Congratulations to VTIFF on a wonderful festival! This year, I went to the festival with some trepidation, fearing an amplification of the fatigue and desperation I was suffering in face of the daily reports of a collapsing environment and social sphere. What I found instead was energizing hope: the hope of the next generation of young, talented, committed filmmakers and activists; of tales of resistance and empowerment; and of renewed faith in the power of film to educate and rouse us, to bind us together in common purpose. Thank you, VTIFF, for the uplift and renewal. For me, it couldn’t have come at a time of greater need.” ~ BS

We have some news on the future of the Burlington Film Society to share. After much contemplation, we have decided to discontinue the Burlington Film Society as a program of the Vermont International Film Foundation. Four years of continuous monthly screenings have been very successful and core to the mission that the Film Society was set out to fulfill. Nearly three years ago, when BFS became a program of VTIFF, we benefited from the stability and structure of a parent organization, offering financial support and staffing to help administer the program. Over the years we have presented activities that were supplementary to the official screenings, such as post screening discussions, blog posts and have brought in speakers and filmmakers. However, because of our limited capacity, these were not as frequent as the term “society” merits. So now, in an effort to simplify and best serve members and our audience, we are renaming the monthly BFS Screenings as VTIFF Screenings.

So, what does that mean pragmatically? We will continue to offer the same monthly film screenings at Main Street Landing. The types of films presented and discussion will not change. VTIFF member benefits will also not be materially altered. Other changes will be to phase out BFS social media, and alter the section of the VTIFF website to reflect this change. These changes will go into effect right away. You will still get all the great events, info and local film notices that you are used to, except now they will come directly from VTIFF – if you aren’t already following VTIFF on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram – please make sure to!

Please know that these decisions are not made lightly and we hope that they will yield better understanding and participation in programming.

We hugely appreciate everyone’s support and participation over the past several months/years, and hope that you will continue to engage with VTIFF to support our mission of community cinema.

Thank you,

My favorite film at the festival — gave me a whole new perspective on the reality of living in Iran and Afghanistan today. Starring a teen girl rapper who refuses to be submissive, so much so that she ends up dragging the filmmaker into the story. She is a force that cannot be silenced and I can’t wait to watch this film with an audience and see everyone fall under her spell.

The Last Laugh
Who gets to decide what’s funny and what’s offensive? Are comics censoring themselves? Do we want them to?

Fatima
This touching film about searching for identity set in the Moroccan subculture in France made me examine how my own culture’s expectations control my sense of self. Also includes the strongest screenwriting moment I’ve seen in film this year.

Nakom
This film is so much more than you expect. The story of a young man living in the big city in Ghana, forced to return home to the village upon the death of his father, takes twists and turns that are completely unexpected, but absolutely earned as the film tells truths about what happens when the old world collides with the new.

I’ve always had a soft spot for movies about conflicted men returning to their hometown, such as Some Came Running or Five Easy Pieces. In Nakom, this familiar narrative device is used to great effect to explore generational differences and the conflict between tradition and modernity in Ghanaian culture. Gorgeous cinematography and solid performances from a cast of non-professional actors highlight this hidden gem in the 2016 VTIFF program.

Lo and Behold, Reveries of the Connected World
I’m 35, so I’m of the generation that grew up in both the pre- and post-Internet worlds. The difference between the two eras is remarkable. Werner Herzog’s insightful doc traces the origins of the web and its impact on myriad aspects of daily life. The film also makes the convincing case that mankind is inching disturbingly closer to a HAL 9000 world.

Made in France
A cracklingly good thriller about a journalist embedded in a terrorist cell in Paris. Timely? Check. Controversial? Check. A surprisingly nuanced look at the psychology of jihadism? Check.

The Interrogation
At a brisk 80 minutes, The Interrogation has a rare narrative thrust for what’s essentially a two-person chamber piece. The film offers no easy answers in its examination of the psychological complexity of the perpetrators of genocide — a topic that has often been oversimplified in other narrative films about the Holocaust. An impressive debut from a first-time director.

Silence
This 11-minute animated short — which will be shown prior to The Interrogation — was co-directed by none other than VTIFF executive director Orly Yadin. It’s a great example of how animation can distill a great deal of information into a few seconds of screen time.

A Syrian Love Story
Rarely does a film convey in such complexity and humanity the multi-layer challenges facing a family torn between the desire to fight for human rights in their country and provide a safe and warm place for their kids and themselves. One of the most honest films I’ve seen.

Sonita
The appeal of the film for me is not only the charismatic Afghan girl whose hero is Michael Jackson, but the fascinating process of watching the filmmaker transition from merely documenting her coming of age to becoming an active agent affecting her life.

My Revolution
We have many, oh so many, wonderful coming of age films this year, but the best is perhaps My Revolution. It manages to capture the essence of youthful love while sneaking in seamlessly the complexity of France’s colonial past, the Arab Spring and the deeper concept of how we define “home.”

The Last Laugh
I’m very glad that Ferne Pearlstein, the director of The Last Laugh, will attend the screening, because I have questions to ask of her. How does one come up with the idea for a film about humor and the Holocaust? Did she spend her time laughing during the production or did the Holocaust survivors berate her for her choice of subject? If you are interested in free speech, in the limits of good taste – come see this film for yourself.

Everybody Loves…Elizabeth Murray
You don’t have to be an art expert to appreciate this fascinating film about Murray, an artist in the 1970s NYC scene. The film is about so much more than her art, presenting a woman vying for recognition in her own right, juggling family and professional life, all the while creating the most vibrant and exquisite work. An added bonus – and what festivals are all about – the director and producers of the film will attend the screening.

Mother
I have a thing for Nordic humor, even though I was born in the Mediterranean. This Estonian film, a small town thriller, will make you chuckle while trying to solve the crime, alongside the inhabitants who all know each other but can’t seem to solve it, either. A black, black comedy.

P.S. Jerusalem
I confess a certain bias here: I know the filmmaker and knew her father. And I certainly know Jerusalem. Danae Elon shot the film while returning to the town of her birth. Bringing along her husband and two small boys who were born in Canada, we view this complex city mainly through the eyes of the boys. This perspective is what makes the film unique and fresh. Elon will attend the screening and I know that the Q&A will be controversial and lively. Looking forward to this.

What can I say? An incredibly scary, political, social gut punch of a film. And, the UK’s submission to the Oscars this year! So much more than a ghost story – takes place during the Iran/Iraq war in the 80s in Tehran. My favorite film of 2016 so far.

Best and Most Beautiful Things
A beautiful, poignant coming of age doc. The subject of the film, from rural Maine, is blind, autistic and navigating love and relationships in her 20s. A fresh perspective, unique viewpoint and a meticulously crafted, cinematic film.

Girl Asleep
To say this one is Wes Anderson-esque might do it a disservice, but I doubt it. Just know that it’s filled with quirky characters, oozes visual style and is hilarious. This is a welcomed light moment in the festival. Bring your friends that like to laugh to this one.

Microbe and Gasoline
Michel Gondry – if you know him and love him as a director, you won’t be disappointed. This is a bit of a departure for him (not as much as Is The Man Who Is Tall Happy?) in the sense that there is less magic realism on the screen. The magic here is character driven. Also, who doesn’t love a road trip movie, especially when the vehicle also doubles as a garden shed?

Demon
Not really a horror film – more of a folktale. There is other-worldly possession, but also a story that is steeped in history and cultures of a Jewish fable. The dialogue slips between Polish, Yiddish and English and takes a bit to get used to, but once you do it becomes an immersive experience.

All the Vermont Filmmakers’ Showcase Films
Seriously – this year’s films are amazing! From animated short to feature length documentaries – the competition is going to be fierce this year! Don’t miss the showcases this year on opening weekend.
