A New Malaria Vaccine
A second anti-malarial vaccine in just two years could be a game-changer for this deadly disease.
…
Already there is an update, with the recent announcement of another anti-malaria vaccine claiming greater efficacy. I don’t think this is a coincidence. I think we are seeing the results of advancing biotechnology. Monoclonal antibodies, for example, are finally coming into their own, with multiplying applications in almost every field of medicine. Vaccine technology has also been steadily advancing, which the world witnessed with the rapid roll-out of many anti-COVID vaccines within a year of its emergence.
…
As Clay pointed out, this is still not at the WHO’s goal of 75% efficacy, but it is still good. Even at 44% efficacy this will prevent many deaths. Also, we need to keep in mind that (as with COVID) death is not the only bad outcome from serious infections. Malaria mostly affect sub-Saharan African children, who often have multiple infections by age 5. Those who survive can still suffer malnutrition, poor development, and increased susceptibility to other infections. It is a massive disease and societal burden. Even with modest efficacy, an effective vaccine has a huge ROI in terms of outcomes and healthcare dollars.
…
Vaccine technology remains arguably the most effective medical intervention developed by humans. We are also seeing the results of advancing vaccine technology, and biotechnology in general. In a generation malaria, one of the greatest scourges of humanity, may become a thing of the past due to vaccine technology.

It led to the following objection:(...)
More recently, we have seen the ban on trans fats, which still hasn't happened in many places even though it improves health immensely and doesn't restrict the freedom of ordinary people:Trans fat (Wikipedia)
Denmark became the first country to introduce laws strictly regulating the sale of many foods containing trans fats[111] in March 2003, a move that effectively bans partially hydrogenated oils.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans_fat#DenmarkAktuel Naturvidenskab (#6, 2010)
https://aktuelnaturvidenskab.dk/find-artikel/nyeste-numre/6-2010Trans Fat Ban Could Bring Smaller Waistlines ... But At What Cost? (NPR, Nov 12, 2013)
Most people know trans fats aren't good for you, but sometimes the urge to ignore your health wins out. That will all change if the Food and Drug Administration has its way.
https://text.npr.org/244767639My point?!The parliament gave the government a mandate in 2011 to submit without delay a law prohibiting the use of industrially produced trans fats in foods, as of 2017 the law has not yet been implemented.

Follow the money!!!
In the case of trans fats, it is not as if consumers ever demanded trans fats. Trans fats made things slightly easier for the food industry. That was all they were good for. It was no big deal to replace them, and yet industry put up a big fight against the ban. And to some extent, the food industry succeeded in mobilizing some consumers against the ban: I'll give you my deep-fried, trans-fatty Mars bar when you pry it from my cold, dead hands!
But it soon became apparent even to the dumbest consumers that it was not a ban of fats but only on trans fats.

The discussion continued in the coronavirus thread where I think it is a derail, so I am moving it to this new thread in Samhällsvetenskap och humaniora instead. If you want a discussion of trans fats, the money trail and the efficacy of "frivillig överenskommelse", it should be moved to a thread of its own.
But for now:Nu förbjuds det farliga transfettet – nästan (SvD, Feb 18, 2019)
https://www.svd.se/a/8w4r42/nu-forbjuds-det-farliga-transfettet-nastanSo this is not at all "ett bra exempel på motsatsen till "follow the money"."Transfett: Åtgärder mot industriella transfetter i kosten (Wikipedia)

On the contrary, it seems to be a good example of Swedish libertarian thinking: to let industry get away with stuff that damages people's health by sticking with recommendations to do the right thing instead of making it mandatory to do the right thing and ban the use of harmful substances in products meant for human consumption.
The food industry appears to have adapted to the recommendations much the same way Big Tobacco adapted to the science showing how damaging smoking is to people's health and lives: by coming up with filter, 'light' and menthol cigarettes, pretending that they were healthier than ordinary cigarettes. The dark side of marketing seemingly “Light” cigarettes: successful images and failed fact (BMJ)
