In May last year I posted some pictures of these from Artur of Poland showcasing his skills and the New Kingdom Egyptian range released in 2010.

Artur has now completed his DBA project and it’s my pleasure to post the completed army:

There’s obviously been a great deal of care lavished on these figures and it shows.

25 mm Cuirassier Band - Dave Docherty

Here’s a very different subject from the usual gallery items: a Napoleonic Band. Dave has painted the Mirliton 25 mm set to represent the band of the 1st Regiment of Cuirassiers:

It’s nice to see a touch of Old School, Napoleonic colour. The impact of all those white horses is very striking. I particularly like the dappling; something I never managed myself.

Here’s a close up of the drummer to show Dave’s skills with a brush.

Dave clearly enjoyed painting these as he’s ordered the Mameluke band set! I hope to post those when he’s done in the meantime check out Dave’s blog.

Capitan 18 mm Napoleonic Naval

This week Vexillia Limited became the exclusive UK distributor for Capitan Miniatures of Spain.

Capitan will be releasing unusual and neglected subjects starting with the excellent 18 mm Napoleonic Naval Crews featured below:

These samples are painted by the very talented Javier Gómez “El Mercenario” who is set to paint all the Capitan figures as they are released. I think he’s really done justice to the Mike Broadbent sculpts.

The first stock shipment is due in late January 2012 and next up should be some 28 mm French Gendarmerie (1805-1811).

Mirliton 15 mm Arab Cavalry

These come from the collection of Topi Mikkola from Finland. They were painted by his friend Heikki Karttunen, who has done a really nice job of capturing the spirit of the period:

The combination of colour and washes has really make the most of the figures from Mirliton’s range covering the Muslim Armies of the Crusades. I think they also shows how detailed the figures are and how well they respond to a wash technique.

Corvus Belli 15 mm HYW - tnkmodels

Ray is a UK based full time painter at www.tnkmodels.com and has recently completed a commission using the Corvus Belli HYW figures:

When he sent me the pictures he also commented:

“Those are great figures to work on, the best yet”

The pleasure Ray had in painting the figures certainly shows in the end result. The armour is particularly nice when set against the strong colours of the striped weapons and shields.

Mirliton 15mm Arab Cavalry - Steve Dean

Only one picture but what an inspirational picture it is:

This reached the quarter finals of SD Forum's 36th painting competition; against some really excellent entries I may add.

The control in shading and the use of strong, deep and rich colours really make the most of the figures from Mirliton’s range covering the Muslim Armies of the Crusades.

Venexia 15 mm Louis XIV - Simon Clarke

This is a real treat from the clearly talented brush of Simon Clarke.

I understand that some of you may have seen these already as some were used in the FOG: book. Even so, Simon has made a wonderful job of the Venexia Louis XIV figures. No wonder sales have risen this year.

The shading and colour choices in what follows are truly striking; they really bring both the uniforms, and figures, to life. The white/grey units are particularly well done.

There seven infantry units one of dragoons, three cavalry and one hussar unit to come so make yourself comfortable.

Medieval Polish Camp Element - Vexillia

I’ve been meaning to do this for some time.

Claudio Berni’s painting of his Baueda baggage models has always been exceptional. In the early days of Vexillia I always wanted to paint camps like the ones in Claudio’s advertising flyer.

Over the summer I finally got my paint brush out and tried to match the master:

This camp combines a Baueda tent with some of the Vexillia Medieval Polish infantry and some Essex horse holders.

The tent design is based on the banner of Sandomierz taken from the now out of print book on Polish Heraldry at Grunwald, 1410:

There’s another camp to come: I’ve only one horse left to paint.

Campaign Games 15 mm Napoleonics - Niall Sterry

Today’s post features the work of UK professional figure painter Niall Sterry who runs the Waterloo 1815 Painting Service. Naturally he chose figures from Campaign Games’ Waterloo 1815 range and Coat d’Arms paints.

I can’t help but think these would be useful for lots of armies well before and after the Napoleonic period.

One of the joys of running a wargames business is you get to paint some great figures every once in a while. As you may know I’ve just bought a range of 15 mm Napoleonic Ottomans so I thought I’d paint a few. There’s a sample of VXN029 the High Command pack:

I enjoyed painting these a lot. Here’s a couple of “warts and all” close ups:

Although intended for the Napoleonic period I’m sure they will fit earlier periods too.

Mirliton Early Medievals 28 mm - Igwarg

Igwarg Studio is a long time collector of Mirliton 28 mm medieval figures. He has recently posted photos of late 13th or early 14th century figures suitable for Flemish, German or Italian city states from Mirliton's Italian city militia range.

Igwarg chose Mirliton because “there is a lot of variety in poses and in armour that other manufacturers don't make” although he did end up making his own pikes as they were stronger than those provided.

Igwarg also provided a photo of figures from Mirliton’s Catalan range. They are all heavily armoured infantry and ideal for generic first rank infantry that all countries of this period. It's Mirliton's older range and the figures are closer to 25 mm than 28 mm.

All in all some excellent brushwork on display with interesting colour selections resulting in a colourful and varies array of figures suitable for many armies of the period as Igwarg intended.

Here’s some more painted samples of this exciting new range from Italy covering the Thirty Years War. This time it’s the turn of the pistol armed Reiters from TYW05:

This piece is intended as both a display piece and a general’s element if I ever get round to playing FOGR.

As these were painted in house I won’t say anything about the painting style except to say that the detail of the castings makes painting really easy.

The final thing to say is that the the horses are particularly fine sculpts and really benefit from a layered painting technique.

Acies Edizioni 15 mm - Vexillia

My first stocks of this exciting new range of 15 mm Thirty Years War figures are due to arrive in early May 2011. So I decided to apply some paint to a few samples of 30YW01 the infantry command pack:

The stand is painted for my DBR Danish army. The range includes artillery, foot, cavalry and both mounted and dismounted dragoons. The new web page has links to pictures for all packs.

The range is sculpted in the modern 18 mm style and mixes well with the ever popular Testudo TYW range as well as Donnington TYW ranges.

I should have stock in early May and will be pleased to accept advance orders against the first consignment. This range will be popular so order early to avoid disappointment.

Corvus Belli 15 mm - Jason Tilley

This is Jason’s third contribution to the gallery. He completed his Hundred Years War army (based for the Impetus) over a year ago.

Since then he’s added a unit of dismounted men-at-arms and now has completed a unit of English mounted men-at-arms using figures from the Corvus Belli HYW range:

Jason “painted the models to represent an English knight and his personal retinue.” He’s achieved a stunning look with a deceptively simple painting style. The controlled colour choices really make this unit special.

Overall a great addition to any army. Well done to Jason and thanks for letting me post them here.

15 mm Italian Wars - Jason Dawson

Jason of JAD Designs has featured here before and I’m pleased to add yet another wonderful example of his painting to the gallery. This time it’s an Italian Wars army using mainly the Venexia Italian Wars range and some late medieval Mirliton knights for the lesser knights.

First of all there’s the Gendarmes where the colour choices make for an impressive unit:

Followed by the lesser knights (Mirliton) with swirling designs on the lances which I think are fiendishly difficult to paint:

Mirliton Fantasy Barbarian - Orctrader

Here’s another great piece of work from the talented Mr. Orctrader featuring a Barbarian Sorcerer/Shaman.

I’ve featured Orctrader’s work before and there’s lots more of his wonderful work at www.orctrader.co.uk.

The figure is BA009F, Asarlai the Dark. Originally produced by Grenadier, and now available from Mirliton , the Barbarian range is a classic sculpted by Mark Copplestone.

Mirliton have now finished re-releasing the all the Fantasy Warriors ranges from Grenadier and they are readily available from Vexillia as special orders.

Campaign Games 15 mm - Carl Robson

This is a first: some excellent Napoleonic miniatures painted by Carl Robson of Raven Painting. It’s fair to say that he’s “a bit good”.

Adept in many scales from 6 to 28 mm Carl made short work of these 15 mm Campaign Games, 1815 Cuirassiers as this pre-basing close up shows:

Although he paints professionally these figures are for his personal collection which is high praise for Campaign Games. They are painted to represent the 8eme Regiment.

I understand Carl is still looking for a suitable guidon so if you can help please leave a comment.

Mirliton 15 mm Communal Italians - Mario Storace

Lorenzo Mele runs www.tagmata.it a web site dedicated to DBMM and wargaming in Italy. He includes a really sumptuous gallery of painted armies and I have already featured Eddy M’s Florentines.

The latest addition is of a similar high standard and features figures from Mirliton’s Communal Italian range by Mario Storace.

All the heraldry is the result of detailed research and all the shields and banners are hand painted.

The three army general’s elements.

The Carroccio and oxen.

City knights.

Rural knights.

Pavesari and crossbowmen. The round top shields are available in separate weapons packs (see R 017).

Communal infantry.
