Testing Vinyl CDs: Groovy Up Top, Optical Down Below

The idea for last week's Listening Post column, which examined the strange demand for vinyl records in the digital age (http://www.wired.com/entertainment/music/commentary/listeningpost/2007/10/listeningpost_1029), was inspired to a small extent by Optimal Media Production (http://www.optimal-online.de/Home.357.0.html)'s vinyl/CD hybrid, which is just like a normal CD except that on the top, it has vinyl grooves etched in. Place a VinylDisc on your turntable, drop the needle at the start of the track, and you'll hear up to 3.5 minutes of music at 33 RPM.<div class="feedflare">

Co-ed Magazine claims (http://coedmagazine.com/entertainment/Music/3400) to have label sources stating that Facebook is set to announce phase 1 of a major expansion into music at next week's ad:tech (http://www.ad-tech.com/) conference in NYC. The move would confirm rumors (http://hypebot.typepad.com/hypebot/2007/10/facebook-may-la.html) we reported three weeks ago and coincide with public moves that Facebook has made (http://hypebot.typepad.com/hypebot/2007/10/as-music-20-act.html) recently.<div class="feedflare">

The Future of Vinyl

by Paul Bristow

A few years ago, many people were worried about what would happen when the few remaining pressing plants &ndash; stopped producing. At that time, with the appearance of CDs and other digital formats and with the decision &ndash; by most London High Street shops &ndash; to stop stocking 45 RPM 7 inch vinyl singles (and 33 RPM 12 inch vinyl albums); it seemed that it would just be a short time before Square Dance Records vanished from the shelves!<div class="feedflare">

Is Hip-Hop Dead?

by Walter Dawkins

Is hip-hop dead? It sure sounds like it if you turn on the radio. What used to be exciting, groundbreaking music seems to have been reduced to a one-note din. The only topics discussed are bling-bling materialism, how many guns you have, and ho's. Hip-hop poster boy 50 Cent appears on the cover of Rolling Stone with the caption Mastering The Art of Violence. There's the raunchy Lil' Kim, and of course, top dog and now Oscar-winner Eminem, who has threatened to kill his wife numerous times on his records.<div class="feedflare">

Interview with Theo Jansen
Theo Jansen is a Dutch artist with a background in science. For the last 15 years, he has been evolving a series of wind-powered animals, made of plastic tubes. When these constructions are fed by wind, they set into motion and transmute into organic-looking creatures; or beach-animals as Jansen calls them. Theo Jansen received the Jury's Special Price in the Interactive Art category at Ars Electronica Festival 2005. Sebastian Campion met him for a talk.<div class="feedflare">

TM Juke Talks Studio Recording

TM Juke is a UK-based DJ/musician/producer. To keep your head above water in the DJ/musician trade it's good to be a multi-talented studio whiz, and TM Juke fits the bill nicely, doing all his own bass, keyboards, and guitars on the latest CD, Forward, bringing in others to handle wind instruments and other necessities. The TM Juke philosophy is basically drink coffee, don't sleep , and if you look at his touring/DJ/recording schedule, you'll see that a lot of money has been invested in the java. Gearwire's Joe Wallace asked TM Juke how Forward came together.<div class="feedflare">

Niche Markets Will Change Music Forever

by Yaro Starak for News, Technology The Web
How much niching can you handle? The long tail has been mentioned on my blog many times - the concept of millions of markets selling hundreds rather than hundreds of markets selling millions. It's also clear that although the Internet is a global technology, the localisation factor is paying dividends and search engines are working hard to provide local search. Niching and localisation go hand-in-hand; one of the best ways to niche a market is to localise.<div class="feedflare">

The Best Page in the Universe

In 1997, Maddox created a satirical website The Best Page in the Universe. The website became popular due to Maddox's blunt and sarcastic writing style as well as his humorous commentary. He later developed The Best Store in the Universe and began selling T-shirts and other merchandise featuring his most famous quotes, such as Littering kicks ass and For every animal you don't eat, I'm going to eat three.<div class="feedflare">

Shadow Artists

I have never experienced an art form more all consuming than graffiti. At one point, graffiti had a very firm grip on my life and lifestyle -it was the last thing on my mind before going to bed and the first thing that came into my head every morning. From acquiring supplies and photographing a finished work, to wandering the city trying to find the perfect spot to paint and marking the terrain along the way, graffiti motivated almost every move I made. Even perils with the law, fights with rival writers and injuries sustained while out on missions couldn't have ended my relationship with graffiti. I still love it to this day...<div class="feedflare">

Interview: DJ Krush, turntable maestro

The Japanese beat wizard sits down with MP3.com to talk about his decision to dig into his entire catalog to remix it all for a greatest hits double CD.
By Jim Welte
Q: Let's start off by talking about the concept of digging back into your own catalog and remixing almost all of it. Seems like quite an undertaking. What spawned the idea of doing this?
DJ Krush: It's simply because it's boring to release just a best of album, so I wanted it to reflect who I am right now, not who I was when these songs came out the first time.<div class="feedflare">

"Dark Days"

The documentary Dark Days gives an unromanticized and fascinating glimpse of the lives of a community of homeless people surviving in a train tunnel in Manhattan.
The most interesting people we see in Dark Days are those &mdash; like Ralph, especially &mdash; who understand the mistakes of their younger years and appear ready to rebuild their lives above ground. Yet, they seem powerless to make that new start, trapped in a hole they can't climb out of. At first, I gave it like a cap &mdash; two weeks. And then it became like home, says Tito, a five-year resident.<div class="feedflare">

The highly anticipated new album by Portishead is finally due to be released. The exact date will be announced on their myspace page shortly.
Portishead's album Dummy is a timeless record that reserved a spot for Portishead in my heart forever. In 1997 they followed up with their next release called Portishead and a special live album came after that, but they've been quiet ever since.<div class="feedflare">
