The Lems Malibu is a minimalist slip-on built for casual comfort. It features a polyester canvas upper, a zero-drop, foot-shaped design, and Lems’ signature IBR outsole. It’s a touch more structured than the Drifter but still flexible, light, and easy to wear sockless.

My review pair was in the Baltic colorway, a rich blue with subtle contrast detailing. I wasn’t able to test them in the Baltic Sea — but I did scramble plenty of coastal rocks in Gloucester and Manchester-by-the-Sea, which felt like a fair substitute.

Fit & Sizing

If you’ve worn the Drifter, you might assume the Malibu fits the same — and that’s what I expected too. But the Malibu is actually slightly tighter.

Out of the box, the upper hugs more closely across the midfoot and instep. Over time, this eased up as the material softened, but the initial fit definitely felt quite a bit snugger than the Drifter. It’s still true to size, but if you’re between sizes, consider going up.

Like other Lems models, the Malibu comes with a removable cork insole, which provides extra comfort and breathability. You can always remove it to increase the internal height, but ideally, sizing should allow you to choose whether to use it — not require it for fit.

By comparison, the Drifter’s cotton canvas upper offers a more forgiving stretch and slightly higher volume. That means your toes feel freer right away, whereas the Malibu takes a few wears to reach that same broken-in comfort.

Upper & Texture

The upper material is where the Malibu diverges most from the Drifter.

The Drifter uses a cotton canvas with a looser weave — soft, breathable, and easygoing. It feels almost like a favorite pair of canvas slippers.

The Malibu, by contrast, uses a polyester canvas that’s smoother, denser, and more structured. It gives the shoe a sleeker look and better shape retention but initially feels firmer over the top of the foot. The tighter weave means it doesn’t stretch as much, but it’s also more durable and easier to wipe clean.

After a few days of wear, the Malibu softened nicely without losing its shape — much like how denim “breaks in.” The inside remains comfortable against bare skin, though the Drifter still wins for pure softness and barefoot coziness.

Sole

The Malibu features Lems’ Injection-Blown Rubber (IBR) sole — the same lightweight compound found in many of their most comfortable models.

What is IBR?

Injection-Blown Rubber is Lems’ proprietary process that infuses air into the rubber compound during molding. This creates a sole that’s incredibly lightweight (roughly 30–50% lighter than standard rubber) yet still flexible and durable.

In practice, the Malibu’s sole feels soft and springy underfoot without the “spongey” feel of foam-based soles. The traction pattern offers reliable grip on both pavement and light terrain — it handled wet coastal rock surprisingly well.

Because the IBR sole compresses slightly under pressure, it provides just enough cushion for comfort while maintaining solid ground feel. It’s an excellent balance for a casual minimalist shoe — not too firm, not too plush.

Lems notes that IBR may not last quite as long as full rubber, but in years of testing Lems models, the durability has been excellent. The Malibu is no exception: after several weeks of wear and some rocky climbs, the outsole showed minimal wear.

Aesthetics

The Malibu’s low profile and minimal stitching give it a clean, versatile look that works just as well with jeans as with shorts. The Baltic colorway is a standout — a deep navy-blue that complements nearly anything and carries a subtle coastal vibe. I’d love to see Lems introduce a few bolder, more playful color options to balance out the understated palette already on offer.

What’s especially nice about the Malibu is that, unlike many minimalist shoes, it doesn’t scream “barefoot.” There’s no exaggerated wide toe box or overtly utilitarian styling to give it away. Instead, it blends in effortlessly — casual enough for daily wear yet refined enough that most people wouldn’t guess you’re wearing a zero-drop, flexible shoe. It’s a design that lets you enjoy the benefits of natural movement without feeling like you’ve made a fashion compromise.

Compared to the Drifters

Compared to the Drifter, the Malibu feels like a sibling — sharing the same DNA but showing a distinct personality. While the Drifter’s cotton canvas upper is soft, breathable, and fabric-like, the Malibu’s polyester canvas has a sleeker, more structured texture that feels smoother to the touch and more durable over time.

In terms of looks, the Drifters have a raised section over the toes, moccasin or slipper style, while the Malibus have a smooth single layer for the uppers. This change may account for the differences in sizing, to a degree. The lack of this raised area also means more durability long term as there is an opportunity for water to get into the seams of the Drifters or for the seams themselves to bow out over time.

It will not pill, scratch, or bunch the same way that canvas would, but it lacks the softer texture and light plays off of the uppers quite differently as a result. They are each casual in their own way. The Drifter fits roomier right out of the box and stretches easily, whereas the Malibu feels tighter at first before gradually molding to your foot for a more tailored fit.

Both share the removable cork insole, but proper sizing is key — you’ll want the cork to be an option for comfort tuning, not a necessity for space. The Malibu also comes in slightly heavier at around 8.2 oz compared to the Drifter’s 7.5 oz, which adds to its more substantial, travel-ready feel.

In essence, if the Drifter is your laid-back weekend companion, the Malibu is its city-savvy counterpart — equally minimalist but with a cleaner, more polished look that transitions seamlessly from relaxed days to town adventures.

Wishlist

I would love to see Lems unify their sizing across all models. While the differences are subtle, they’re enough to make sizing tricky between the Primal, Drifter, and Malibu lines. Consistency would make finding the right fit much easier.

It would also be exciting to see Lems experiment with a thinner IBR sole for those who prefer a more pronounced barefoot feel — something in the 6–7mm range could strike a perfect middle ground.

Finally, the Malibu’s design is strong enough to carry more colorways. A few earth tones, washed neutrals, or even a hemp edition would give this shoe even more character.

Summary

The Lems Malibu is a minimalist slip-on that bridges the gap between barefoot comfort and everyday refinement. Its structured polyester upper and lightweight IBR sole make it more versatile than the Drifter for urban and travel wear, though the fit is initially snugger.

Once broken in, it’s one of the most balanced minimalist casual shoes you can wear — flexible, foot-shaped, and effortlessly stylish.

Its versatility is such that I can wear them for a wedding one weekend, a hike the next, and as the finishing touches for my Halloween Costume at the end of the week. (I'm Abby from K-Pop Demon Hunters!)

Frequently Asked Questions about the Lems Malibu

Back in April, I noticed the Xero Shoes Kelso was on sale from Xero Shoes: The normally $119.99 shoes were half off. I like free shoes but struggle to pass up a good deal, so I ordered a pair of the Kelsos in the black with white accents.

Xero markets the Kelso as "a fresh take on the classic court-style shoe."¹ You might recall I am a fan of the HFS Original (also $119.99). Could the Kelsos combine the HFS comfort with a bit more style?

To find out, I have been wearing these Kelsos in many different scenarios over the last four months for walking, even running, on casual outings, and also to work. What follows is my full review.

Xero Shoes Kelso materials and design

The Kelso from Xero Shoes combines a familiar-feeling look with Xero's well-known approach to barefoot-friendly design. That means it has a wide toe box, flexible outsole, and is (overall) pretty lightweight.

The upper of the Kelso is made of a mix of full-grain leather and suede. The full-grain leather has a glossy look to it. I am no leather expert, but this leather looks to me like a semi-aniline full grain leather. And to my untrained eye, the Kelso's full-grain leather has a low-quality look to it, which may or may not come across in the photos. The Kelso's suede accents add welcome texture against the sheen of the full-grain leather.

The combination makes the uppers of the Kelso flexible out of the box, meaning the materials are pliable and get out of the way of the movement of your foot. These are minimal-to-"xero" break in shoes.

The outsole of the Xero Shoes Kelso is a 6mm rubber, their "6.0mm FeelTrue®" sole. It has zigzag tread pattern, the kind that you'd expect to use on a flat surface. (More on how this sole performs in a bit.) The sole is stitched to the uppers at the front of the shoe. I appreciate this build detail for longevity. It also adds to the look of the shoes.

The Kelso also has Xero's huaraches-like shoe straps. These straps, which are white on my pair, connect from the sole of the Kelso on either side of the midfoot and run up to the laces, at times running beneath suede leather in the process (or through, as is the case with the "Xero" on the outside of the shoe). In theory, this design makes it possible to cinch up the fit of the shoes. In practice, it does little for my feet. (If this works for you, let me know. I'm curious!) Speaking of the laces, they are flat, unwaxed laces that feel a little too long and a little too wide for the shoes.

The shoes have a removable insole, similar to other Xeros like the HFS Original. The insole is about 1mm thick. Combined with the material attached to the outsole, my measurements put the total stack height of the Kelso to around 11mm.

The Xero Shoes Kelso looks

I mentioned how my black leather plus white strapped pair of Xero Kelsos reminded me of Adidas Sambas, and this was validated by my 16-year-old goalkeeper daughter. (However, the black and white Kelso has a bright white sole compared to the tan sole of Sambas.)

My oldest likes the look of them similar to me. However, the first several times I wore the Kelso shoes around Mrs. BirthdayShoes, she didn't much care for the Kelso.

But I didn't give up. Like most minimalist shoes, the fashion can take some tinkering to figure out. The trick with the Kelso is in finding complementary clothing and in particular pants. When I asked the missus about the following outfit, she thought the Kelsos looked good:

The grey straight leg jeans work well. Dark straight leg jeans (seen earlier) also seem to work.

I think the contrasting design of the black/white colorway is what makes them work — or fail. The stark combo stands out. For that matter, the bright whites of the straps stay clean despite plenty of wear.

However, for a subtler option, the "stormy weather" suede with a gum (tan) sole or the all-black suede with tan lower both have a nice clean look to them. I saw the grey pair in a local shoe store and, given the choice, might even prefer them over the ones I got. So if you like either of the all suede versions, they're currently on clearance from XeroShoes.com here.)

No matter what colorway you get, the shoes are unlikely to bring too much attention to your feet.

Overall, I think the Kelso works best with jeans or casual khaki or jean-style pants. I've worn mine with shorts plenty of times too, and if you like the minimalist shoe plus shorts style, you'll like these well enough. For me, when I wear shorts, I wear sandals almost exclusively.

Xero Shoes Kelso fit, comfort, barefoot feel

For sizing, I went with my usual Xero Shoes size 11, which is consistent with the sizing for my HFS Originals (and, not reviewed, Scrambler-Mids). The fit of the Kelso was as expected.

Again, the Xero Shoes Kelso is comfortable out-of-the-box for day-to-day wear. The wide toe box that lets your toes splay naturally, and while wearing them my feet and toes can spread out as much as I want them too. Compared to mesh uppers as with the HFS (for example), the leather of the Kelso upper adds structure to the shoes, so the Kelso is firmer rather than floppy (like the HFS Original).

The Kelso's zero-drop sole gets out of the way of your biomechanics. As mentioned earlier, the total stack height is about 11mm. The Kelso has just a touch of cushiness while staying responsive. Wearing the Kelsos to get around man-made surfaces is comfortable, and you can wear 'em all day long.

The Kelsos capture the "court-like" experience when worn on certain smooth surfaces. Any quick pivot will generate that "squeak" or "skid" sound like you'd hear on the basketball court. This usually happens when you least expect it, for example when you're wearing them inside a quiet office. It's kinda funny.

Out in nature, the soles transmit lots of ground feel, as you would expect them to. However, the Kelso provides enough cushiness to keep you from feeling like you have to prance around, minding each and every step. Rocks, gravel, cracks in the asphalt, twigs, grass ... all are communicated well through the Kelso sole.

Most often, I wore my Kelsos with socks. However, I've also gone full days sockless in them too. The difference comes down to the leather upper being less breathable than mesh sneakers, so these shoes run a little warmer. Socks can help here in my experience, wicking away moisture.

Xero Shoes Kelso for walking (and running)

When I got them, I first tested the Kelso on the plain old treadmill both running and walking. This gave me a direct comparison to my HFS Original since I'd put hundreds of miles on the HFS Original on the treadmill.

Well, you guessed it. The Kelsos feel heavier and hotter than the HFS Original's mesh upper. The leather and additional material trap more heat in the shoe, and if you are coming from shoes meant for running (or huaraches), you're going to want to shelve the Kelsos ... unless it's cool outside, of course.

To that end, the seasons have started changing here in Atlanta, making it cooler in the morning (mid-60s). As a result, I've donned my Kelsos several times on my morning two mile walk. They've been great, very comfortable on my feet and I haven't thought once about the heat. Bear in mind that up until this recent switch, I've been doing my morning walk in sandals, from the Lems Switchback to the Camino to Earth Runners, Bedrock Cairn 3D Pros, and Shamma Trailstars (Ibex).

If you want to use the Kelso for activity, you can, especially in a pinch. And for casual wear, the Kelso can easily be your daily driver. Paired with jeans, they’re great for work, errands, or knocking around town.

Xero Shoes Kelso durability ... and value

After four months, the Kelso shows no significant wear. Leather holds up to abuse pretty well, so that brings some comfort for expectations around longevity. And like other Xero Shoes, the soles will last a long time.

What about value? Well, for me, getting them at half off due to a sale, I think the value for the Kelso is great. However, at full price of about $120 ... that's going to be a hard purchase for me. I love leather products, and at $120, I'd expect the leather to be high quality, as conveyed by the look and feel of the material. It's not $120 quality for me.

When I contrast the Xero Shoes Kelso to my old VivoBarefoot Primus Lux, the Lux leather is luxurious. For a more recent Vivo comparison, I picked up a pair of VivoBarefoot Gobi II Premium Leather (I plan to try these next), and while I can't yet say how they perform, the quality of the materials is way higher.

Unfortunately, the full price of the Gobi II is $210 (cheaper if you shop around).

Everything is expensive these days, and minimalist shoes are no exception. I would recommend doing what I did: If you like the Kelso, grab a pair on sale. To that end, while you can't get the black and white or white/grey/blue Kelsos on sale today, you can get the all suede black/tan or grey/tan versions here (for $84). As of mid-September, it looks like most all sizes are available too.

I would not pay full price for these shoes. If you know Xero, you know you can afford to wait.

Conclusion

The Xero Shoes Kelso is a comfortable, style-forward take on a sneaker shoe with foot-friendly benefits: wide toe box, zero-drop sole that's flexible (with a lot of ground feel), flexible materials. Its biggest "bug" is its feature: leather means less breathability. Bought at the right price, you're likely to be happy with the feel and wear of these everyday minimalist shoes.

Thirteen years ago in 2012, Softstar Shoes released what was then a new casual "barefoot shoe" for men called the Rogue.

The Rogue was a slip-on, Vibram-soled shoe with a leather-upper and sheepskin insoles. They looked crazy comfortable, both flexible and well made to support the foot's natural, unshod state. What caught my eye was their aesthetic. The shoes looked able to be paired with a lot of different styles, a pretty important consideration.

In short, the Softstar Rogue was a barefoot shoe for everyday wear that looked worth some serious consideration. And so when Softstar offered to send me a pair to review, I couldn't wait.

Soft Star Shoes

Soft Star Shoes is a perennial favorite of BirthdayShoes.com. They manufacture by hand all their products in their workshop in Corvallis, Oregon, and the shoes (and slippers) they make are fantastically comfortable.

Why are Soft Stars so (generally) comfortable? Simple, it's baked into the design:

• The shoes are neutral from heel to toe, allowing proper biomechanics and posture
• The shoes have sizable toe boxes! Got wide feet? No problem!
• Many of the shoes have sheepskin liners on the insoles. Have you ever owned a pair of sheepskin-lined shoes? If not, your bare feet have been missing out!
• Even utilizing leather in many of their styles (Note: they have Vegan options), Soft Stars are usually very lightweight.

These factors combine to make a shoe your feet will be very pleased with.

The Softstar Shoes Rogue

Soft Star Shoes sent me a pair of the Rogues (for free) in "Aged Oak," which has a weathered leather deep tan finish (Note: This color has since been replaced as of 2025 by "aged whiskey" and they also have two other colors).

Per the product page (Use this affiliate link to support the site for free ... if you so choose!), these shoes are:

• Full-grain aged leather for a "rustic look"
• The upper interior is lined with our unique Breathe-O-Prene, a medical-grade material that is similar to neoprene but with improved ventilation and breathability. Breathe-O-Prene keeps the shoe fitting snugly around your foot for a secure and cozy fit.
• The footbed is made with genuine sheepskin innersoles to keep feet warm and dry.
• The Rogue features an 8mm version of our Vibram Geo sole. This lightweight sole is very pliable to allow barefoot-style movement and groundfeel with improved durability and traction.

Rogues have sizable toe boxes, no arch support, and are flat-soled. Take a look around the shoes:

The Softstar Rogue upper, insoles, and liner

The short of it is that the uppers and insoles of the Rogue are incredibly comfortable. Let's break it down.

The Rogue leather

The Rogues have a supple leather used for the exterior of the shoes. It's very flexible out of the box and seems to comform to your feet over time. Note that your bare feet don't ever touch the leather due to the Rogue's Breathe-o-prene liner. You'll see a stitch that runs no longer than an inch at the front of the Rogue. This basically allows for a larger vertical space for toe wiggle room. This keeps the uppers from squishing the big toe and also from creating these toe bumps that just look kinda a little off.

The "Breathe-o-Prene" liner

It looks like Breathe-o-prene is used most often for various braces for knees, ankles, wrists, etc. So how did this material function in a minimalist shoe like the Rogue? Incredibly well. The BOP liner does a few things for the Rogues. It adds some structure to the upper, fortifying the leather. It specifically allows a good bit of stretch as you can see in this photo. All this without feeling constricting.

Against the skin, the liner is soft and non-abrasive. I often cite the original New Balance Minimus Life as having one of the best liners for bare feet in a minimalist shoe. However, the Breathe-O-Prene is even better. It lives up to it's name by breathing well. Also, it adds a bit of thermal insulation on cooler days. I've not had the chance to wear the Rogues in temps above 75 or so, so it's hard to say if they'd get "hot" in the summer. I'll have to circle back on this in a few months.

The Rogue's sheepskin insoles

There's a reason that Australian ugg-style boots are so popular and you'd be hard pressed to say it's because of a pair of uggs' sexy looks. It's the sheepskin.

I got sold on Soft Stars' sheepskin insoles back with my first pair of Grippy Roos (By the way, I was still wearing my original Softsar Roos years and years after my original review — can't say that about many other minimalist shoes I own!).

Sheepskin feels amazing on a bare foot, it wicks moisture away from the foot, and it also improves the connection between the shoe and the foot. How? By placing this fuzzy layer that helps create a connection between the soles of the Rogues and the foot — particularly when walking (so when the foot lifts, the sheepskin fills the gap between the hanging soles and your feet).

Suffice to say I'm a big fan of sheepskin insoles and when I saw the Rogue shoes would have them, I had a feeling I was going to like these shoes.

Overall, the upper of the Rogue makes for a decidedly roomy fit on my feet. It's not tight in any way, shape, or form. Meanwhile, it's not so loose as to feel like they'll ever flip or flop off my feet.

One long-term wear update on the Rogue: I forget how long it took, unfortunately. The sheepskin liners did rub down (the "fur" rubbed off over time). However, Softstar upgraded the design to make the sheepskin removable. I have yet to try the new model out as of this update (in 2025). Once I get another pair, I will share the update here.

The Softstar Rogue soles

The Rogue shoes have an 8mm thick Vibram sole. That's a fairly thick rubber sole compared to other Soft Stars I've reviewed (leather soled Roos I've reviewed have a 2mm thick sole in total!). However, the rubber is the foamy sort meaning that it's not so dense that it's heavy or firm. This means that I can still notice the grout lines from a tiled floor. Mind it's not going to be as much ground feel as any < 4-5mm thick soled minimalist shoe, but it's more ground feel than a pair of Trek-soled FiveFingers.

As for traction, I've yet to have any slippage in the Rogues though I have walked on some lightly wet terrain. Without any real lugging, you're not going to be trekking the Himalayas in the Rogue, but that's not their intended function either.

One aspect about the Rogues' soles is that since the uppers are stitched to the soles on the tops of the soles, the sole necessarily extends past the foot on all sides. At most once a day (maybe once every other day) I find the front lip of the Rogues might "catch" on something. The Rogues lack toe spring, so if I'm not dorsiflexing my toes enough (though it is easy to do in the Rogues as seen here), the lip can catch on uneven terrain and sorta trip you up. Well, "trip" is probably a strong word here, but it can just catch.

Also, the extension of the sole at the rear of the Rogue has some interesting implications ? namely, it serves as a "catch" for overlong jeans and pants. You'll see that better in some of the pictures below in the "looks" section.

Overall, the soles are going to provide you with a ground feel that's comfortable all day long.

The Rogue looks

The first thing I did on wearing the Rogues was ask my wife what she thought of them. I don't remember exactly what she said, but it was something like "yeah they're fine." I'll take that, particularly when her first reaction to Soft Star Ramblers was ... well, less than positive.

I like the Rogue aesthetic. In the Aged Oak leather, it has a clean look that conveys comfort and a minimalist style. The leather stitching at the base of the shoes adds some dimension to their look. The vertical stitch on the front of either pair also makes the shoes have a more traditional shape at the front. If I had my "druthers," I'd probably figure out a way to make the uppers stitch to the soles in a way that doesn't have a lip (as is the case with Roos or RunAmoc Dashes). However, in practice, the lip doesn't detract as much from the overall look as I thought it might.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and as casual, leather barefoot shoes go, I think the Rogue is one of the better options out there. Paired with non-skinny jeans or even khakis, they seem to "fit."

And for some reason, I don't think there are a lot of BirthdayShoes readers with legs that can fit into skinny jeans.

Casual jeans

I tend to cut my casual jeans on the sides to make them lay down over my shoes. Don't know if others like this look, but I do and have for some time. The Rogues look good in a pair of bootcut jeans that are decidedly worn-in. Check it out:

The Rogues also paired well with a pair of non-cut, dark washed Gap bootcut jeans I own. You can see that in the photos below. I've also worn them with straight leg jeans and they work well enough there, too.

Overall

Overall, there is a lot to like in Soft Star Rogue shoes. I've a feeling they're going to be a shoe I return to frequently in the coming months and perhaps even years. It's hard to go wrong with a pair of minimalist shoes that feels so great on my feet, can be worn all day without discomfort, and fit well with my sense of style. I can't say the overall feel is one I've had with any other pair of barefoot or minimalist shoes I own, and it all adds up to having a pair of shoes you're very likely to forget you're wearing.

The main drawback I found with the Rogue is just the extra lip. I just wish it wasn't there because it detracts marginally from the function (e.g. the random catching of the lip when walking) and marginally from the aesthetic. Re-made without the lip, I think the Rogue would be just about perfect.

I guess there's one other drawback: the Rogue retails at $185 (link), which is expensive. Remember that they are made from high-quality materials (leather, sheepskin, Vibram rubber, and a medical grade liner!) by hand in the U.S.

I mostly wore the Rogues without socks. However, I was happy to find that with socks they were still super comfortable. You don't get quite as much sensation from the sheepskin insole when wearing socks, but socks pair up with the Rogues no problem.

A note on sizing: while I'm typically a 10.5, Soft Star doesn't offer their shoes in half sizes, so I've always sized up to 11. This hasn't ever been a problem. While I could see the Rogues being even better in a true 10.5, the extra length just adds a little more wiggle room for my toes.

I’ve been wearing minimalist sandals for over a decade — Xero, LUNA, Earth Runners, Shamma, Gladsoles — you name it. One of the things that’s always stood out (or sometimes stuck out, awkwardly) is how hard it is to find "barefoot shoes" and "barefoot sandals" that work well in terms of function, and have a look and design that can be enjoyed by both the die hard minimalist runners out there and your everyday sandal lover.

Enter the Shamma Pacific Avenue: a leather slip-on minimalist sandal that avoids looking like the shoe of a “barefoot weirdo,” (even though I am) while still being different from conventional footwear.

Somehow, the Pacific Avenue sandals pull this dance off. For me, these huaraches-like sandals, sandals that at a glance could pass as Rainbow flip-flops, nail the aesthetic and function balance better than almost anything I’ve worn.

The minimalist footwear design dilemma

Minimalist footwear walks a design tightrope, something Justin has talked about at length. A minimalist shoe or sandal aims to:

• Provide barefoot functionality: Zero-drop, wide toe box, flexible sole, natural movement, lightweight, etc. This is primary.
• And! Be visually neutral enough to wear in public without drawing confused stares.
• But also! Be visually distinct enough to stand apart from mass-market, over-engineered shoes.

In other words, we want our barefoot shoes to blend in enough to be socially acceptable, and stand out enough in subtle design cues that they still feel like something special.

(Okay, okay even if all you want is for your barefoot footwear to blend in, the manufacturers want your footwear to stand out — that is, in a good way so that people notice the footwear, ask you about them, and spread the word.)

Quite the challenge, right?

And if the barefoot shoes are too weird? Lots of people clock the shoes immediately. “Something is off.”

Too conventional? Like someone trying to pretend like someone else, the footwear loses its "barefoot soul," becoming a copy of the very ideas they’re supposed to be pushing against. For example, I say, "These sandals look like Tevas," a lot in some reviews. It is not a knock against Tevas, but everyone knows what Tevas are and there are expectations to them. Minimalism is not among those expectations.

The Pacific Avenue sandal from Shamma finds the sweet spot. It feels purpose-built, clean, and elevated, like a sandal made by someone who actually understands feet, like a sandal made by someone who also cares about how it looks worn with jeans or shorts.

What all these facts fail to say? The Shamma Pacific Avenue is the easiest minimalist sandal I’ve ever worn, and one of the best-looking ones too.

Sandal style meets function

The first thing I noticed: the Pacific Avenue sandal?

It looks great.

The sandals avoid screaming, “high speed huarache.” The Pacific Avenue looks different from your typical clunky flip-flop. The sandals bring good looks that stand out as stylish, especially in this tan leather color. And on looking closer and wearing them around you realize:

The Pacific Avenue is something different.

The wide leather forefoot strap is low-profile yet substantial, cushy and thick. The elastic top strap (did you notice it?) is subtle and hidden from most angles. And the stitching, leather grain, and shape all suggest care and craftsmanship. This is the nicest and softest leather I have ever experienced on a shoe or sandal too. It is so smooth and comfortable, while also having a beautiful natural texture to it.

The Pacific Avenue is the type of sandal you could wear to a summer BBQ, a casual dinner, or really anything you want, and no one would bat an eye. And if another minimalist nerd spots them? You’ll probably get a knowing nod.

The Pacific Avenue sandal sole

My pair of Pacific Avenue uses the 9mm “Maximus” sole built with Vibram Newflex rubber. Vibram Newflex rubber is a soling material Shamma has been using across multiple models for yearse and for good reason.

Newflex strikes a solid balance between durability, traction, and flexibility. While it clocks in at 8–9mm in actual thickness, it doesn’t feel blocky or clunky underfoot. Thanks to the way it flexes and moves with you, the sensation is closer to wearing something in the 5–6mm range, especially with the secure fit of the sandal keeping your foot centered and stable.

The chevron-shaped tread pattern on the bottom of the sole deserves mention. This pattern is aggressive enough to bite into loose terrain, though not so deep that it feels grabby on flat surfaces. It performs well on mixed terrain, from sidewalks to dusty trails, and gives me more confidence on uneven ground than something flatter (like Vibram Morflex — see the Guide).

Even with its added thickness compared to something like Vibram Morflex, the Newflex is remarkably pliable. I can still flex my toes downward naturally and it bends the sole downward. Failing this simple test is a dealbreaker for me for any sandal claiming to be minimalist (I.e. Bedrock and Lems, while offering sandals people love, fail this test. Even beefier LUNAs fail this test).

The Pacific Avenue's responsiveness and tactile feedback are excellent, especially considering this is Shamma’s thickest sandal iteration sporting the Vibram Newflex.

Newflex also holds up well long term. I’ve got lots of experience with it on other models and found it to resist wear impressively across both road and trail.

For what the Pacific Avenue is designed to do (urban and light trail wear, high flexibility, all-day comfort), Newflex is an ideal match. It’s grippy, reliable, and still one of the best sole materials out there for minimalist sandals that need to feel substantial without sacrificing freedom of movement.

Pacific Avenue sandals ground feel

You know me. I am going to choose the absolute minimalist option, whenever possible.

Shamma offers a 12mm thick version of the Pacific Avenue (in Brown and Dark Brown, more on this in a moment). I wanted the 9mm Newflex sole for max ground feel. The 9mms have just enough thickness to buffer from harsh pavement while they still let you feel the world beneath you. To the eye, 9mm may look like it is on the thicker side, but if you land on a rock irresponsibly, you WILL feel it and likely regret it. This is because Newflex has threads on top of a base, rather than a flat lug design, so the lugs stand out to a measurement of 9mm, but the sole remains flexible and with good ground feel.

If you want a bit more cushion, the Brown and Dark Brown versions come with a 12mm Morflex/Newflex hybrid sole that is called the "Alpha" sole from Shamma Sandals. This sole is more substantial and thicker, if that is to your liking. I have covered the Alpha sole in my prior review of the TrailStars Alpha, so feel free to take a look and decide for yourself which is right for you.

Both options keep things flat, flexible (relatively speaking), and zero-drop.

Shamma Pacific Avenue vs. TrailStars Maximus LE

Now let’s put these side-by-side with something like the TrailStars Maximus LE, which I’ve also worn extensively. The Trailstars Maximus are my favorite sandal of all time. I wear them so much that I have a permanent tan line of their unique zig-zag straps on my feet.

The TrailStars are phenomenal in terms of foot lockdown and control. They are the sandals I grab for anything and everything over the last year or so. They’re built for function, and while that’s awesome, you feel that function in the look.

Yes, I love that look, but it is clear that this is a sandal for all kinds of adventures. Not everyone is going to be a fan of the zig zag straps on the top of the foot and the toe loop look, even though they are excellent for all kinds of activities.

The Pacific Avenue falls outside the adventure sandals category. They focus on being the most comfortable, easiest-to-wear barefoot slip-on sandal, one with decidedly more style than the TrailStars.

Now, the top straps are thicker and more substantial on the Pacific Avenue, so they bring a strong sense of security, even while the Pacific Avenue straps cover less total surface area than the TrailStars. The toe loop of the Trailstars can make a big difference on a more technical surface. However, the Pacific Avenues are great for hiking and running all the same. The elastic straps have a bit of give and the Pacfic Avenue does not provide maximum surface area security, like the Trailstars Maximus, but they are great for more leisure road running or trails.

Both sandals have the same choices of soles: 9mm "Maximus" Vibram Newflex and 12mm "Alpha" Newflex Morflex hybrid.

Pacific Avenue materials and design

The Shamma Pacific Avenue may look minimal on the outside, but its strap system is thoughtfully engineered for comfort, simplicity, and barefoot integrity. Rather than overcomplicating things with techy components or plastic hardware, Shamma uses natural materials where they matter, adds stretch where it helps, and keeps the fit dialed in and dependable.

The standout here is the wide, aniline-dyed leather forefoot strap, which provides the main structure and contact across the top of the foot. It’s soft, pliable, and conforms to your foot shape over time, offering that classic leather feel without the stiffness you sometimes get out of the box.

Hidden within that top strap is a discreet elastic segment that allows a bit of stretch when sliding your foot in. This makes the sandal easier to put on and take off, while still pulling the strap snug once your foot is in place. It’s a small touch that makes a big difference, especially if you’re wearing these for casual, all-day use. The strap is not so elastic as to contribute too much to a loose fit. The straps are just stretchy enough to give a little bit of comfort and assist with fit, while they avoid detracting too much from the security.

This is a very delicate balance that the Pacific Avenue nails. I can take these for a run at cruising speed but hard banks or cutting will require slowing down. Yes, you can run in them (or hike) if you want even if the Pacific Avenue sandals are designed to be lifestyle sandals.

Between your toes, you’ll find a thin, soft webbing toe post. This is a break from the leather you find in many stiff flip-flops. The webbing is smooth and flexible, with enough give to avoid chafing but enough structure to keep the foot from drifting laterally. If you’re sensitive to toe posts, this one’s among the least intrusive I’ve worn. I barely even notice it.

At the rear, the heel strap is made of leather and secured with Velcro, allowing for micro-adjustments in tension. This is key for dialing in a secure, walk-all-day fit without needing to constantly readjust. The Velcro itself is slim and well-integrated, consistent with the Pacific Avenue sandal’s clean aesthetic, avoiding attention (compared to big plastic buckles or dangling tabs).

Pacific Avenue fit, feel, and use

The Pacific Avenue sandals feel great without any break in. The leather is soft and the elastic heel strap gives just enough tension to keep them on without digging in.

With the security of the straps over the top of the foot, the huaraches-like posts on either side of the ankle, and that all-important heel strap, there is no flip-flop motion in the Shamma Pacific Avenue sandals.

The combination offers enough lateral support for road running and light trail trail use even though your foot will slide more in these than it would in something like the TrailStars or Warriors.

The Pacific Avenue straps are Y-shaped and provide security on both sides of your feet, but because the Pacific Avenue lacks a customizable buckle (like the Shamma Sandals Numa line or the Shamma Sandals Cruzers), they remain more lifestyle oriented. On a whim, I can enjoy them on an easy run or light trails.

One thing to note is that while the Cruzers and Numa have more customization for the fit in the form of an adjustable buckle, the thicker leather straps of the Pacific Avenue provide a more comfortable and snug fit, balancing things out.

What I love about the Pacific Avenue is that they may be the most lifestyle-oriented sandals from Shamma. Still, they are Shamma Sandals, a brand built on prioritizing function. Shamma has a produc here that is functional while still looking so good.

Sizing the Pacific Avenue

If you're looking to pick up a pair, Shamma's website has templates for you to print out and get the right size. These templates are reliable and will let you know the exact way your foot will fit on all of their sandals.

Feet come in all shapes and sizes and it is great to be able to see all your piggies fit within a line, or you can make considerations to go a size up to ensure any stand-out toes are well taken care of.

Shamma Pacific Avenue sandals durability and long-term use

Now you know that the sole is Vibram Newflex (Maximus sole). In my experience, this material has proven to be a reliable and long-lasting sole with an excellent tread that is smooth enough for roads and with lugs that can handle all kinds of trails. As you wear your Pacific Avenue sandals, the leather uppers of the sandals will mold to your foot over time and develop a patina.

For me, the original tan color was quite light, but over time, the sandal has darkened with wonderful patina with lots of character and a look of a well-loved sandal that has many more adventures ahead of them.

Regular leather conditioning will further extend the life of the sandal though it is not necessary. I have punished prior Shamma Sandals through rain and mud and abused the leather, but they still held up over many years.

As with many Shamma models, the entire strap system is modular and replaceable. If the leather stretches over time or the elastic or Velcro wears out, you can repair or replace the components without tossing the whole sandal.

Final verdict

The Shamma Pacific Avenue fills a crucial and long-empty niche in the minimalist world:

This is a sandal everyone will want to wear out. It’s minimalist without being too direct, stylish without selling out; it is a balance sandals haven’t quite nailed—until now.

If you want a sandal that plays nice with your natural gait and your everyday wardrobe, this one’s it.

I believe that a non-barefoot, non-minimalist-oriented person could buy these just for the looks, staying for the design and comfort, becoming a minimalist sandal (and shoe) convert along the way. For a sandal that does a lot, has great materials, design, AND can be considered attractive — the Pacific Avenue feels like a triumph.

Nearly a year ago, I bought a pair of LUNA Sandals Mono Winged huaraches.

Luna Sandals is one of the oldest huaraches-style "minimalist sandals" companies around. Luna was founded in 2010 by "Barefoot Ted" McDonald, star of the now classic book by Chris McDougall Born to Run.

Years ago now, my first pair of Luna Sandals was the Leadville, about as basic a pair of huaraches as you could get. Over the years, they got beat up and worn down. Somehow I lost them. Last summer I set about getting a replacement pair.

Today I will review that pair — the Mono "Winged" — after a lot of wearing them. But before I get to that, allow me to digress.

Hard or soft Vibram rubber?

Now, you should know I also have a pair of "dress" Lunas. They use leather all over — save for the soles — and look like this:

They are the Jesus sandals, and though I'm sure my wife feels differently, I think of these Lunas as my "dress sandals." I'll pair them slacks or shorts and a button down. They always receive positive comments.

Your mileage may vary.

Now, I mention these old Lunas I have for one major reason:

They use a fairly thick, Vibram rubber sole. And the rubber is dense.

Why's that matter? Well, if you consult Jarvis' trusty Vibram Rubber sole guide, you'll find that Vibram soles vary a lot in terms of density and stiffness.

I'd place the fancy Luna sandals I own (and mind, you can't buy these anymore), as similar to Vibram Woodstock. They're kinda stiff. They have broken in — but not much — after years owning them.

Bedrock Cairns

Now let's talk about a competitor: Bedrock Cairn sandals.

I've owned a pair of these sandals for years. And you know what? They are great! I love the Cairns for their rugged dependability.

• No they don't offer much in the way of ground feel
• Yes they are pretty dang stiff

But they are definitely better than your Chacos (lighter), and their soles last a long time. Mine are probably seven years old now and, though a bit worn at midfoot, still ticking along. You can use these sandals in all sorts of conditions. They are beasts.

Bedrock soles are made for them by Vibram, so I'm not sure where they fit according to Jarvis' guide, but as Jarvis put it in his review:

Make no mistakes about it, this is a thick sole and it will protect your foot from just about anything. I gave it plenty of testing following sea turtles along the jagged rocks of Maui and I never was concerned that anything would dig into my feet from below.

Bedrock Cairn review

This is a pro/con thing with the Cairn. You can bomb over surfaces on the platform they provide. But you lose ground feel and the soles are stiff on your foot. It can feel a little grating and takes some getting used to. (Similarly, the Bedrock Mountain Clog feels best with socks — but that's a story for another day).

The photo below is from four years ago and I'd say the Cairns are more or less in the same shape now, despite being my goto summer sandals ... up until last Summer.

Shamma Sandals Warriors

Finally, one more sandal to mention. Here's the Shamma Warrior (with that extra strap, which I don't use at all, but it has a purpose if you run in them):

The Warrior uses the Vibram Newflex sole (see the guide). It's a dense sole that's super thin (as you can see!). This sole does not break down — and therefore "in" — to your foot, so years after I got these, the sole is still flat just like that photo above.

Because the sole is dense but not thick, it transfers a lot of ground feel, way more than the Cairn, which itself is more than the fancy pants leather Lunas.

These sandals are my go-to for deadlifts and squats these days. I like them for the connection to the ground, but don't love them for earthy surfaces because they just let lots of stuff "in" from the flatness and thinness of the sole. #barefootsandalsproblems

That brings me to the Luna Sandals Mono.

Now I'm ready to talk about the Luna Sandals Mono (with wings). When you first get the Luna Monos, they are flat as a board. Just look at this:

The Luna Mono uses Vibram Morflex for its rubber sole. This is the least dense rubber Vibram offers. Did I mention Jarvis' Vibram rubber guide? Because it's fantastic.

As Jarvis puts it:

Morflex “mouse pad” is a micro-cellular sole, with one-third the weight of rubber, but excellent resilience and a little bounce. The material can be equated to a very dense neoprene, slightly squishy and conforms easily to the shape of your foot. It has good grip and durability.

Guide to Vibram rubber

Now, Jarvis contends that Morflex is not meant for offroad, but I think that was just the particular sole pattern of Morflex that he was evaluating.

The Luna Mono's sole looks like this:

It's clearly meant for a variety of conditions. The thing about Morflex is that as it breaks down it "molds" to your foot. That is, it acquires this curvy structure.

Meanwhile, the Morflex is super lightweight and conforms to the ground. This "mutes" the poky bits on the ground, but you still feel connected to the surface. It's a tradeoff. I love this tradeoff, and across the above mentioned sandals, the Mono's Morflex sole is my favorite. It just hits that sweet sole spot of comfort while also being incredibly lightweight.

The drawbacks? A little less ground feel, which is fine by me. And yes, the sole wears faster. Here are my Lunas after a year (lots of summer and late fall wear — now spring wear):

You can see how the sole is wearing more at the midfoot and that the wear is significant. This absolutely means the Monos will not last as long as the Bedrock Cairns.

But how long will the Monos last? Apparently a long time. In fact, what follows is an update on the soles a full year after the original review here.

New vs. worn LUNA Mono Morflex Soles

2025 update: With more than a year's worth of additional wear, here's where those LUNA Mono Winged sandals are today — and a side-by-side look at them compared to a brand new pair of LUNA Mono Retros:

As you can see, the tread of the old pair of LUNA Monos is worn smooth at hte ball of the foot. There's considerably less wear, by comparison, at the heels. I've been told by the folks at r/barefootrunning that this is in no way proof that I walk more on the front of my foot than my heel (I've used these Monos almost exclusively for walking). However, I'm still at least a little bit skeptical.

Regardless, I've put a lot of wear on my Monos, wearing away much of the Vibram Morflex sole. How much? Based on using calipers to measure thickness at the heel and ball of the foot, here's the breakdown.

The sole thickness of LUNA Winged Mono hauraches on my right foot at the ball of the foot (near the yellow circle toe post) is 7 mm at the narrowest part whereas it is 10 mm at heel at narrowest part. (The "narrowest part" is a bit subjective, but you can imagine the deepest "divot" as felt by hand.) AS for my left foot, it's 6 mm at ball of the foot at the narrowest part and 10 mm at heel.

By comparison, a pair of LUNA Mono Retros when new are 15 mm at front and back — and completely flat.

More on the LUNA Mono Winged

Now that you're bored from all that sole talk, let's dive into some other aspects of the Mono, good and bad.

The wings and straps

First, let's talk about those straps and "the wings."

The easy part first. Lunas use "Supple, easy adjust performance laces kicked up a notch by our super secure wing design." The "laces" are those webbing straps.

This is a nice material that feels great on the skin. I imagine it's just what you expect it to be. For me, the straps are too long, and though I could trim them, you'd lose the stitched end. They do come with an elastic bit that keeps any excess strap down, but sometimes this rides up and the extra strap past the buckle "bubbles."

The wings and buckle system use one continuous strap. The wings are easier to adjust than when the laces run through the sole (the "retro" option). The buckles also are custom to make all this work fluidly.

A lot could be said regarding the buckle systems of Lunas and Bedrocks and Shammas and Xeros ... and on and on. I will save those comparisons for another day.

Here are a few thoughts on the wings and system:

• Luna's system works and is easy to understand
• The system is quick to adjust, running the laces through the wings and buckles to tighten the sandals
• The drawbacks?
  • The laces took a bit of time to "break in," meaning they had this tendency to want to slide back through buckle and loosen. Once the laces became a little less stiff, they settled in
  • The top buckle is just kinda bulky. Probably necessary for the design, but just something I don't love.

Kevin, Luna expert

I have a good friend — Kevin — who is a huge Luna fan. Kevin runs in Lunas and has gone through dozens of pairs over the years. He even makes a habit of stopping by the store when he travels to Washington and grabbing multiple pairs on the cheap via the Lunacycle program (affiliate link).

Kevin does not like the wings. I'm not clear on why they bother him, but my hunch is they rub his feet. I've never had this problem, but I can imagine it being a thing if your foot is wider at the back. I also could imagine that the sandals might feel a little more locked down when the straps go through the soles — it's just a more vertical attachment point from the heel and top of foot.

Kevin isn't the only one who doesn't like the wings on LUNAs, opting instead to get Retros. As for me, I liked my winged Monos a lot. However, I recently (summer 2025) picked up some Retros to compare them, best I can, with the Retros. That comparison is coming soon. Be sure to subscribe for that update when its ready.

The monkey grip footbed

The Luna Monos also have a monkey grip footbed. This is a thin layer of material atop the Vibram rubber footbed.

This material feels good on foot, and for me, it's an improvement over the raw rubber I recall from my old lost Leadville's.

Sometimes I do get hotspots on these footbeds if I walk enough in them. They are more forgiving than the Cairns more aggressively knobby footbed, though.

Do you run in these?

No I don't. I should try it some day. My goto running shoes over the last year have been Xero Shoes HFS Original (now reviewed) and, though less and less, Altra Lone Peaks when I feel like bombing around in cushy, but flat and wide, sneakers.

Middle school — over 30 years ago — was when I got my first pair of Teva sandals.

This was the early 90s, and Teva, founded in 1984, was having their moment with teens, even awkward, "big-boned" kids like me.

I remember my first pair of Tevas were "high-tech" and tan-strapped with a hieroglyphic pattern. What made them special, as I recall, was that mine had some kind of “spider grip” insole, marketed as superior for keeping your foot secure in all sorts of settings, especially whitewater rafting (how Tevas got their start). And of cousre I was rafting all the time. Or never.

I wore those Tevas every day that I could. I wore them so much that the sandals got marinated in teen sweet. They became so rank that I could smell them as I sat in class. At some point I moved on to Birks (a story for another sandal review), which, thankfully, didn't suffer from the same odor problem.

Teva sandals maintain their popularity to this day, and their simple velcro design, using triangle plastic rings to connect the straps, is still how they work. Tevas even had a minimalist sandal at one point. The design innovation with Teva is the three points of adjustment via heel, instep, and metatarsel velcro straps. This design is simple, reliable, time-tested. It works.

What do Teva sandals have to do with a review of the Lems Switchback? Because Lems Switchbacks feature an insole — marketed the Barefoot Footbed™ — that reminds me of the detail and design of the Teva spider grip footbed. In 2025, the Switchback is a novel design for the minimalist-minded sandal market, offering folks an alternative to successful incumbents like LUNA, Bedrock, Shamma, Xero, and Earth Runners. I like seeing new products and new approaches, just as Teva sandals were once novel sandal offerings 40+ years ago.

But new isn't always good, so how does the Lems Switchback perform? I had to find out for myself, so I bought a pair a couple months back. I’ve now put 60+ miles on them across neighborhood walks (5 million steps aren't going to take themselves), outdoor nature trails, surprise outings, and even a couple treadmill runs. There's a lot to cover on the Switchback, so let's get going. First, let's cover the basics.

Lems brought the Switchback sandal to market, their first sandal offering, after over four years of prototyping by Andrew and team. I’ve known Andrew Rademacher, Lems’ founder, for about 15 years, since the company’s early days when the company went by a different name. What I know about Andrew is that he’s all about design. He pours energy into creating footwear that balances foot-friendly function that also looks good.

The Switchback is billed as being built for tackling hiking trails, bike-packing routes, beach days, or urban exploration. The core design innovation with the Switchback is how its combination of a single ladder lock buckle (that's attached to a fixed toe-post harness) that tightens webbing that runs through Lems' proprietary Switchback Slydr™, of which there are two flanking the ankle on either side. This hardware serves as guide for the webbing, allowing you to adjust tightness around the heel for a secure fit. This design simplifies the adjustment of the sandals.

Additionally, the Switchback features a full rubber outsole for durability and traction on varied surfaces, paired with a flexible EVA midsole for lightweight cushioning. What Lems calls the Barefoot Footbed™ is an anatomically contoured, textured insole. It's touted as mimicking the foot’s natural shape to enhance sensory feedback, keeping feet responsive to terrain.

My size 11 sandals weigh 9.0 oz/each (compare to 10.7 oz for Bedrock Cairn Pro 3D in size 11; and 6.1oz in LUNA Mono Retros in size 10.5). the Switchback offers a 14–17 mm stack height and a 3.0 mm drop. The upper comes in synthetic leather (Mojave, Scorpion, Sandstorm) or vegan nylon (Cactus, Oasis), with neoprene and microfiber lining. The shape of the sandal is built on Lems’ Widest Natural-Shape™ last.

Marketed as a do-everything sandal, the Switchback is pitched for rugged trails to casual strolls. The Switchback aims to balance minimalist principles with enough structure for light adventures, making it a contender for those seeking one sandal to rule them all.

User review of the Switchback is highly positive

Before I wrote this review, I took to Lemsshoes.com and gathered up nearly every review so far on the Switchback. I read them and then dumped them all into a file in order to prompt a synthetic summary of what people think. Here are some highlights of user reviews.

The Switchback sandal has sparked enthusiasm among users, earning an average rating of 4.9 stars with over 80 reviews (as of mid-June 2025, the sandals were released in mid-April). Comfort is a recurring theme — "so comfortable," "super comfortable," etc. with the word mentioned by at least 30 reviews. One user remarked, “Feels like you’re not wearing anything,” and a number cite all-day wearability.

The Switchback is described as "super light," especially compared to Chaco sandals, and Chacos were the most frequent sandal comparison. If you're curious, only one review mentions Bedrock or LUNA saying, "These sandals have, by far, the best strap system out of the others that I've tried, the others being Bedrocks and Lunas. These are the only ones that haven't chafed my ankles or the tops of my feet."

Users also like the fit afforded by the Switchback Slydr™ strap system (No, no one calls it that) for its ease of adjustment. A common refrain is that the Switchback is "easy to adjust." One user said, "Favorite thing is that you can pop them on and adjust with one hand and by just a tug they secure all the way around."

Users are using the Lems sandals in a variety of ways with accounts of trekking miles in tropical heat or navigating urban and trail settings with ease. One wearer hiked extensively abroad, reporting durability and grip on varied surfaces, while others lounged or worked long hours on their feet, like a swim coach on a pool deck, without fatigue.

Drawbacks. Sizing confuses some. A few users needed a size or two larger than expected to avoid toe overhang, urging careful selection. The 3.0 mm drop frustrates minimalist purists with one reviewer wishing for a zero-drop design, calling the difference slight but noticeable. The toe post of these huaraches-inspired sandals can rub initially (though "rubbing" not a common comment). Durability seems strong though it's still early for these sandals, and one user encountered a fraying strap restrainer, resolved through Lems’ warranty.

Despite these notes, the consensus leans heavily positive. Users swapping from other brands praise the natural footbed and even the "moderate" cushioning.

How I tested the Lems Switchback sandal

As mentioned earlier, I got my Switchbacks in Cactus, size 11.

Over the past several weeks, I’ve recorded right on 60 miles of use: 46 miles on asphalt walks in my hilly neighborhood (140-150 feet of elevation change, 16–17 minute-per-mile pace), around 7 miles on nature trails with creek crossings, sandy clay, rocks, fields, wood detritus, log jumps, etc., and even 8 miles running on a treadmill (two separate 4-mile runs) to see how they fared running — though they aren't marketed as running sandals. I also got them wet on the trail and can share some thoughts on water performance.

Beyond that, I wore them casually to my kid's swim meets and trips to the neighborhood pool, on errands and around town (grocery runs, family outings, summer stuff).

Design and strap system

The Switchback is a huarache-inspired sandal with a modern twist. It uses a toe post between your big toes, a Y-shaped harness over the top of the foot, and a single strap that wraps the ankle and heel, adjusted via a ladder lock on the outside. The Switchback's equipped with metal hardware across the board, using proprietary clips (the "Slydr") that reverse the direction of the single strap, not unlike a typical huaraches sandal — just with a bit more finesse.

This strap system lets you tighten the strap with one hand, pulling the heel and harness snug. Here's how I do it. I stand, shift my foot forward pushing against the toe post, lean over and grip the bottom part of the strap (that goes into the ladder lock) between my fingers with my thumb on the ladder lock and pull. This cinches up the strap against my heel, bringing the slack through the Slydr ring, and then I ratchet down the strap tight. This is a quick process that works well. Once tightened, you can dial in the fit by lifting the lock just a bit. And when you want to take them off, pull up and slip them off.

It’s a neat system, and one of the simplest ways to adjust two points of tension in an easy motion. Kudos to Andrew at Lems for this innovation. Users raved about the ease of adjustment, and I agree: It’s quick and reliable, and the only thing I'd change about it is finding a way to contain the extra strap when they are worn "snug," as it hangs out there a bit.

As for the neoprene lining used on the static parts of the system ... It feels good against the skin and affords the Switchback structure, directing the straps where they should go. On one occasion early in my testing, I had an issue with the outside structure bumping my ankle bone. I can't say why this was happening and thankfully it hasn't happened again.

The Y-shaped harness does a good job providing structure to the sandals too. I don't think that loop atop the harness is useful for much other than adding a focal point (it's for looks).

Unlike traditional — or modern — huaraches, almost all of which offer multiple adjustment points, the Switchback's single ladder lock constrains fine-tuning. This limitation is a tradeoff, a feature, one that a lot of folks will like because it removes complexity from the sandal and speeds adjustment, even if it reduces customization.

Also, the simplicity of the heel strap is much appreciated. I wouldn't have expected to cite a heel strap as a standout feature, yet here we are: The webbing chosen by Lems for the Switchback is great. It feels substantial and good on my skin. And I appreciate how there's strap — and only strap — on the heel of these sandals. The angle where the straps land on my heel is chef's kiss right. In my testing I never had any issues with slippage on the heel strap and it sits perfectly against my heel. My only complaint is it would occasionally flip over when I'd ram the sandals on quickly, requiring a quick flip with my hands. Mentioned for review completeness only.

Switchback performance

I see the Switchback as a generalist sandal, built for all-day wear running errands and then ready to go hit a trail for a hike or neighborhood for a walk.

On my neighborhood walks (fast-paced, hilly with 140–150 feet of elevation change all over the course of a couple miles), the Lems performed like a champ. Going downhill, toe-post-style sandals can strain your foot laterally as it angles out from your body. Here, the Switchback stayed secure. All around, I suffered no hot spots at the toe post or ball of my foot, even after 5-mile treks.

The Switchback is a solid pick for urban adventures, from swim meets to grocery runs, and the padding in the soles is nice for standing around on concrete too.

On light trails — in my case, sandy clay, river rocks, roots, and wood detritus — the Switchback felt sure-footed. The rubber outsole gripped well, and I felt confident sprinting or dodging obstacles like roots and rocks.

That said, that 14-17 mm stack height combined with the toe-post design whereby your foot has more lateral play at the front did lead to a couple minor slips. On a couple occasions during one hike, I misstepped on angled terrain and my foot wanted to shift off the footbed at the front of the sandal (the toe post can only do so much to stop this kind of movement). I was fine. Still, always a good reminder of the open-toe vulnerability of sandals on the trail, especially to your toes and the outside front of your feet.

Getting the insoles wet, I found the footbed can get a little slippery though not enough to make me too worried.

I mentioned I ran in these very early on in my testing. I wore the Lems Switchback for two 4 mile runs on a treadmill. The sandals worked fine with no blisters and minimal abrasion and hotspot activity.

However, for running only, the footbed’s texture got too “sensational” for my feet about two miles in. For walks and trail hikes, the texture of the footbed is just fine, and if you feel like running for a short spell on the trail, they're great for that.

Switchback aesthetics

Andrew at Lems has a knack for balancing function and style, from classics like the Primal to the Mariner to the Nine2Five. The Switchback’s Cactus color way is distinctive (and I also really like the synthetic leather offerings, though I don't recall them being available when I ordered my pair). I like the accents on the sandals, whether it's the way the outsole has cutaways to the insole or the premium-quality of the metal hardware, which is a step up from the plastic typically found on outdoor sandals.

At swim meets and at the grocery store, I got “Where’d you get those?” comments. My kids just shrug and see them as typical for the sandals I wear.

The Cactus nylon straps have a sporty vibe, but I’m eyeing the leather Mojave for a classier look. Some users called it stylish, and I agree that it stands out without being flashy.

If you’re new to huaraches, the toe post aesthetic takes getting used to. For me, I think Andrew nailed a fresh take on the genre with the aesthetic design of the Switchback.

Barefoot feel and comfort

With a 14–17 mm stack height (17 mm heel, 14 mm forefoot), you get a 3.0 mm heel-to-toe "drop." Any time you have a drop in barefoot shoes or minimalist sandals, the eyebrows are going up.

The 3.0 mm drop will bug minimalist purists. I am confident Lems has gotten and will get an earful about the sandals not being zero-drop. For me, I can't say I much noticed it, and maybe that's not surprising. I recently measured my two-year-old, thoroughly worn LUNA Mono Winged sandals. Those LUNAs use Vibram Morflex rubber, and on measuring with calipers, I note they are 7 mm thick at the ball of my foot and 10 mm thick at the heel, a 3–4 mm drop that didn't exist when they were new (15mm based on my calipers). I haven't noticed that drop either.

Then there's the Switchback’s toe spring, another debate, because toe spring lifts the front of the sandal to avoid snagging on obstacles. Here, too, is a design choice that assuredly has some effect on biomechanics and gait kinematics. How much? Shrug. What I know is that toe spring helps reduce the likelihood the front of the sandal snags on the ground of low-clearance obstacles. (I snagged and dragged the front lip of a pair of Xero Shoes Z-Treks twice on a walk just this past Sunday — very annoying!). So I give Lems a pass on the toe spring too.

With such a stack height, the Lems Switchback will subdue a good bit of ground feel. Still, you’ll notice gravel, roots, and rocks on trails. I'd place the ground feel above Bedrock Sandals Cairn though less than LUNA Mono and certainly less than various ultra-minimalist Xero Shoes sandals. By way of a simple example of the ground feel, rolling a pea-sized, rough pebble on concrete, I can feel the roughness through the Switchback soles.

The benefit of the somewhat plush insole on the Lems is that the EVA makes the sandals ride a smoother as compared to Bedrocks, for example. The contours of the footbed, which likely include something akin to "arch support" (arch hugging?) make your foot feel more locked onto the sandals too.

On the other hand, if you don't wear them snug on your foot, you'll get a little bit of that flop sound of the soles dangling and then reconnecting with your foot on each step. With a snug adjustment on the strap, this goes away completely though.

Switchback durability and wear

After 60 miles, the Switchback looks solid. The outsole shows minimal scuffs, no tread loss, promising longevity. The insole creases where it bends but holds firm.

The nylon straps and neoprene lining are pristine, with no fraying to mention. The Switchback Slydr™ metal ring — where the strap tensions — seems sturdy enough (the hardware very sturdy). I do wonder how it will do over time with regular, hard pulling to adjust the strap through the "switchback." It is fine so far. (The extreme close-up of the switchback system above is also photo taken in the last day.)

Also, as for any smell? None to report, noting that I haven't suffered from smelly shoes in at least a couple decades now. I guess I paid my dues there.

For fun, I hosed off my sandals after my recent five-mile hike as they'd gotten pretty dirty. I then threw them in the dishwasher, top rack. Post-wash, they look pristine again, though I probably voided the warranty. Dishwash at your own risk.

Conclusion

The Lems Switchback sandal is the newest take on minimalist-minded sandals or modern huaraches. Lems approach blends a traditional toe-post, ankle-wrapped design with a new strapping system and Lems eye for aesthetics.

That single-strap "switchback" system adjusts easily, with little fuss to speak of, and this aspect of the sandals really is the one that stands out — fitting given the system is the sandals' namesake. The contoured insole is overall a good thing, even if it's like Ruffles (with all those ridges IYKYK).

From urban strolls to light trails, the Switchback inspires confidence and has held strong after 60 miles of documented testing (plus various other everyday adventures). If you're looking for a solid alternative style to the incumbents in the barefoot sandals market, take a good long look at the Switchback. Imagine me, a freshman in high school. The year is 1995, and I'm still in my larval phase. I begin high school and a miracle happens. I grow several inches while losing weight, going from a "big-boned" five foot, six inches tall to fifteen pounds lighter and four inches taller.

Little else changes. My wardrobe is baggy jeans and flannel shirts, and despite the improvement in body composition and no longer being entirely invisible to girls, I'm still in no way, shape, or form ... cool. But I did have hair.

Like so many teens those days, I wore Birkenstocks, and in my case, the Milano — that's the Arizona with the back strap (for those who don't know). I'd finally convinced my parents to get me a pair having burned through the knock-offs they got me from Land's End. My Birkenstock Milanos were the real deal, and while no one really cared what I put on my feet, like the dumb teenager I was, I cared too much.

I loved those sandals until the grittier end — when the suede footbed became flimsy at the edges as countless bits of cork wore off the soles. Those Birks were my go-to shoe, carrying me through many a teenage adventure until they fell apart, a​nd I started wearing Birkenstock Bostons, but that's another story.

Today, I’ve got a high schooler of my own these days, and she also loves her Birkenstocks. And while she's lucky enough to get the real ones, it's her mom who buys the knock-offs to save money. Birkenstocks are back in a big way, with the only difference being that nowadays, high school kids wear Birkenstocks with socks.

A barefoot sandal gets Birken-style

I saw the Softstar Camino Sandal launch summer of 2024 and was thrown back to my youth. A "barefoot sandal" take on the Birks? Sign me up. But at $140/pair, I couldn't bring myself to buy them, not until a couple months ago when I caved. I wanted to find out for myself if these could somehow combine the sandal of my past with a foot-friendly design in the present.

I bought my pair from the "Elves," and I’ve been testing them ever since, both with casual wear (their real purpose) and light activity in the form of regular 2–3 mile walks around my hilly neighborhood streets. "Hilly" here is 140–150 feet of elevation change with a few less extreme ups and downs in between, all over the course of a couple miles).

After 34+ recorded miles walking plus plenty of casual outings, I'm writing this review.

What is the Softstar Camino sandal?

As you see, the Softstar Shoes Camino Sandal is a minimalist or barefoot sandal. They are designed to be a barefoot-friendly alternative to the Birkenstock Milano.

Per Softstar Shoes (product page 👉 consider using this affiliate link and support BirthdayShoes if you like), the Camino features a 6mm Vibram midsole that "molds to your unique foot shape" paired with a 5mm Vibram "Lightning" outsole — a rubber type I can't seem to find anything about. The combination is topped with a suede leather footbed over Poron® foam for cushioned comfort. Though the thickness of the foam isn't mentioned, it has to be 5–6mm as my calipers pin the entire stack height at about 17mm. More on this later.

The zero-drop sole in total is flexible while having a good bit of structure to it. The Camino sandal isn't exactly a lightweight with my size 11 weighing a bit over 10oz for a single sandal. (Notably, Softstar released a "Camino Lite" version in 2025 that I have not yet tried.)

The design of the Camino gets out of the way of natural foot movement — offering a wide toe box that lets your toes splay freely. Adjustable leather straps with buckles and a heel strap ensure a secure fit if you security is something you want, while oil-tanned leather uppers add durability. Softstar emphasizes sustainability, noting the sandals are resoleable by a cobbler.

Priced at $140, the Camino sandals come in various colors (I chose "Terra" — i.e., "Brown"), and Softstar markets them for long hours of wear, from casual strolls to light outdoor adventures.

Them's the specs. S​o what's the story in real life?

How I used the Softstar Camino Sandal

I got my Caminos around two months ago. As mentioned earlier, I've documented some 34+ miles walked over hilly neighborhood streets while wearing them, pacing 15–18 minutes per mile. These walks, typically 2–3 miles long, involved 140–150 feet of elevation change on-street walks.

I also wore the Caminos casually for grocery runs, family strolls, an Easter egg hunt, and suburban adventures. My size 11s (I usually wear 10.5 or 11 US, 43 in Vibram FiveFingers) fit well for my average-width, average-volume feet. Worn casually in a set-it-and-forget-it kind of way — even on my hilly 'hood walks — gave the Caminos a relaxed ride that I prefer for this kind of sandal.

I avoided trails in my pair. These things are too nice for all that dirt. I'm sure for spontaneous light trail work the Caminos would do fine.

How do the straps work?

The straps took minor tweaking. I wore them as-is out of the box, but after 5–8 miles, I tightened the front strap slightly for more security, keeping the heel strap loose. Adjusting the buckles isn't easy on these kind of sandals. That's just how it is, something I know because I recently tried adjusting a pair of Birkenstock Lutrys and lord it was a pain to do.

In any event, once I set the straps, my feet had plenty enough play to feel free. That said, worn this way — a bit loose on the foot — the sandals tend to "hang" off your foot every time you lift your feet off the ground. This means they can move around a bit every step you take. This can also mean that they connect back with the ground well before your foot re-connects with the soles. I trust you understand what I mean. Some flopping is the result, especially going downhill.

But these aren't adventure sandals and shouldn't be evaluated as such.

Camino design, style, and aesthetics

The Camino achieves the Birkenstock Arizona look at first glance — wide leather straps, suede footbed, buckle closures. My brown pair feels premium. The Camino is a high-quality sandal that pairs effortlessly with khaki shorts or jeans, fitting in at a Starbucks coffee shop or barbecue. I’m picky, and the Camino falls short of Birkenstock’s clean lines.

For example, the heel strap is stitched to the front two buckles of the sandal. This design choice results in some catching on my foot when I slip them on. The stitching breaks the one-piece look you get with Birkenstock Milanos. Softstar likely chose this to minimize leather waste — a sustainable move that saves money — and the result has two drawbacks. The first is that it makes the sandals looks less polished.

This is unlike Birkenstocks, where leather wraps neatly around the cork. The Camino’s upper curves in and disappears above the sole, below the suede footbed. Stitching around the footbed’s perimeter doesn't do the sandals any aesthetic favors and also terminates the Poron foam. Add up all these design choices and the sandals look slightly less premium than their $140 price suggests (bear in mind that the Milanos MSRP for $135).

This is all okay. The Caminos are still handsome, even if they give off a slight dad-sandal aesthetic. Would the Caminos even be Softstar Shoes if they didn't look, well, a little different? (And if you're not familiar, Softstar's moccasins for adults are all-time favorites.)

Softstar Camino Sole

The Camino’s sole is a trade-off between durability and rigidity. The 6mm Vibram midsole and 5mm Vibram Lightning outsole (which looks an awful lot like Vibram Newflex) offers a robust structure. There are two things I wonder about.

First, I wonder how the Lightning will wear over time. Looking closely at the soles of my Caminos, I'm seeing wear at the heels (likely due to that hanging effect mentioned earlier) and the balls of my feet.

Time will tell how long these outsoles last.

Compared to my LUNA Mono huaraches, which use Vibram Morflex rubber, the Camino’s sole feels morem rigid. Softstar markets that the Caminos will mold to your foot over time. I've put them through 15+ hours of pavement abuse walking and however many hours of casual wear. The sandals don't seem to be molding or changing shape, but candidly, I don't know how long that process should take.

The Camino's sweet, suede footbed

I didn't expect this. The suede footbed, layered over that "Poron® foam," is the highlight of the Camino. That stitched edge of the footbed? It goes unnoticed by my feet.

The feel of stepping into the Caminos is just nice. This is especially noticed after wearing a more coarse-feeling pair of huaraches-style sandals — like the canvas on my current pair of Earth Runners, which I like, but is a lot more texture. The suede is buttery smooth on my feet.

Since I have been running in sandals of late, the Caminos almost feel like a recovery sandal, plush and comfortable. And with no ridges or arch support to speak of, my foot feels unbothered as it collapses that foam. And by collapses, I mean that the 17mm stack height I measured can be collapsed to 11mm by squeezing on my calipers.

Of course, the (stark) comparison worth mentioning is to Birkenstocks. Softstar Caminos are, as you'd expect, way, way softer than Birkenstock’s rigid, cork footbeds, replete with their arch support and structured insoles. It's funny because I swear Birkenstocks were comfortable 30 years ago, but what did I know?

Softstar Camino Ground Feel

The Camino will not be known for its barefoot feel though I don't think that's what they're going for. On the other hand, on surfaces like a stone sidewalk, the sole and foam footbed passes along a good bit of the variation felt underfoot. Tested against the Bedrock Mountain Clogs, the Softstar Camino offers a good bit more feel for the ground. This feel is different but more akin to the (yet to be reviewed) Lems Switchback.

(The Caminos, being totally flat through and through with that smooth, unopinionated suede footbed, leave the sensitive pads of your feet free to feel more of what's underneath.)

The Camino is an ultra-minimalist sandal by any stretch. Compared to the Xero Shoes HFS Original, a shoe that will remind you of every stone and pebble you step on, the Camino offers a gentle experience.

Conclusion

To recap, the Softstar Camino Sandal is a nod to Birkenstock fans who’ve gone minimalist and can't manage to put up with the rigidity of Birks any longer.

The Camino is a zero-drop sandal that looks more dressy than your typical strappy huarache or more adventure-prone barefoot sandal. If you head out for a stroll or attend a barbecue, you can expect to wear the Softstar Camino incognito — meaning people won't look twice at your sandals.

The Camino's suede footbed is my favorite part. And while I'm eagerly awaiting the soles to mold to my feet, as is with many miles on them, the Camino is a comfortable choice that should last a long time.

Yes, the Camino is similar to the Milano. It's mostly different. I'm happy with my purchase and I know I'll get lots of wear in these sandals over many summers to come. I am eyeing the Camino Lite but not planning on forking over another chunk of change for them any time soon.

I first saw the Bedrock Mountain Clog over email, and I knew instantly I wanted a pair.

Unfortunately, they were sold out, so I put myself on the waitlist ... and I waited. When they finally restocked in October 2023, I bought a pair within the first hour. $185.50 ($175 + tax) and 19 months later, I'm reviewing the Bedrock Sandals Mountain Clog. I’ve gotten a thorough sense of what these "barefoot shoes" bring to my feet. I've also rifled through what the community thinks about the Mountain Clogs — the good, the less good, and well it's mostly good — and I'm ready to share it here.

Clogs meet sandals

The Bedrock Mountain Clogs are an unusual kind of barefoot shoe. Like a slip-on clog (think: Boston Birkenstocks, an old favorite of mine) yet with the unmistakable DNA of Bedrock's flagship take on huaraches. Clog up front. Modern huarache in the back. Is the Bedrock Mountain Clog the mullet of barefoot shoes?

Suffice to say Bedrock Sandals have a unique place in the minimalist/barefoot sandals and barefoot shoes world. And despite their beefy build and non-barefoot feel, these zero-drop shoes and wide toe box are still category-adjacent enough for me.

For this review, I'm going to do something a little different. I'll cover what the shoes are — specs and what Bedrock says about them. Then, I'm going to share what I see as the consensus view of the Mountain Clogs, having collected and synthesized a wide range of user reviews.

Last, I'll share my 2¢, and there's a giant photo gallery too.

What Bedrock says about the Mountain Clogs

Bedrock markets the Mountain Clog as a versatile, all-terrain shoe. Bedrock leads off their description of the MC with, "Built for adventure — like we always do — our Mountain Clog is an all new way to free your feet."

These clogs are targeted at folks who want the freedom of a sandal with the protection of a clog. The upper comes in leather suede, nubuck, and even a few synthetic fabrics. (The ones I bought were the brown nubuck leather.)

The outsole is a Vibram Megagrip, which is billed as a high-traction rubber that "lets you go hard in the great outdoors." Meanwhile, the Mountain Clogs offer a zero-drop platform with a 16mm stack height (zero-drop means it's the same height at front and back of the shoe). They have a cushioned, though firm, polyurethane (PU) footbed.

My size 12 weigh 13.8 oz per Clog (more on sizing later). By comparison, Xero Shoes Kelso weigh 10.8 oz (size 11) and Altra Lone Peak Hikers at 13.1oz (hightop Altras, again size 11).

As alluded to before, the Mountain Clog borrows heavily from Bedrock’s sandal lineage, featuring a three-point adjustable strap system. Both the heel strap and the inside strap use G-Lock clips with set points of adjustment on the straps. The outside upper has a ladder lock for on-the-fly adjustments. If you're familiar with other Bedrock Sandal models, it's pretty much just like that.

The clogs feature a climbing rubber toe cap (known as a "rand" in the rock climbing community), which serves to reinforces the front, promising protection against stubs and scrapes. It all comes together with a wide toe box that gets out of the way of natural toe splay, a critical element of foot-friendly shoe design.

On paper, the Mountain Clogs offer an ambitious pitch: a clog that can handle casual days and light outdoor pursuits while catering to many healthy footwear habits. So what do users say about them?

The user consensus is overwhelmingly positive*

The Mountain Clog has a passionate following. The ratings across the seven available colorways/styles on BedrockSandals.com average near-5 stars (4.8+).

A closer inspection of user reviews reveals a product that’s not without its complexities. On the positive side, comfort and versatility are recurring themes. One reviewer described it as “the ultimate do-everything footwear,” having worn the Clogs for hiking, biking, and even a wedding (!!). Another praised its ruggedness, saying, “I feel nearly invincible in my mountain clogs,” especially after long days on their feet. The wide toe box earns consistent applause for allowing toes to move freely, and the Vibram sole’s grip is a standout on varied terrain. The adjustable straps also get frequent kudos for letting wearers fine-tune the fit to their liking.

As with any shoe, the praise isn’t universal. Sizing emerges as a significant hurdle — almost every review I read, including my own experience, advises going up a size. “The clogs run quite a bit smaller than the original sandal,” one user cautioned, while another was more emphatic: “GET A SIZE UP… They run at least a size smaller than shown.” No minor thing given how much you're going to spend ordering these online. Pay attention to sizing advice!

Users talk about the footbed of the Mountain Clogs, and how it is a hybrid between flat and molded. This also divides opinions. For those with high arches, the footbed can be a concern. One reviewer wrote, “The higher your arches are, the longer [the break-in] will take.” Another person gave up entirely, saying, “I couldn’t find a comfortable fit with the arch and toe support.” (More on the footbed from me below.)

Durability feedback is overall positive, but of course, with nuance. Many users report the Mountain Clog holding strong after months of use, with one saying, “They’ve taken a beating and still look great.” Then there are some outliers — one wearer observed, “The leather is starting to separate from the toe rand on both outside edges of each clog,” after a year of heavy wear. (I wonder how heavy. The reviewer didn't say.)

Aesthetically, the clog’s unconventional look is described as “funky” or “Hobbit-like.” Most embrace the Clog's earthy vibe. Others find it too quirky for broad appeal.

But all in all, the sentiment about the Mountain Clogs is overwhelmingly positive, regardless of the shoe's quirks. So here's my take.

Reviewing the Bedrock Mountain Clog

Nineteen months in, everyday casual comfort is where I land with the Mountain Clog. The wide toe box gives my toes ample room. I never feel like my toes are getting crushed or rammed into the sides of these shoes. Chalk one up for clogs in general here. I say this because "way back when" I was in high school (mid-to-late 90s. I'm old), Birkenstock Bostons were my year-round, go-to footwear, worn without socks (weather permitting) and with socks in the wintertime. I mention the Boston because I loved them so much, and for years I wanted something like those clogs in the minimalist shoe world. Birkenstocks in general are just too stiff, at least for a long time until they're heavily broken in (and down).

Thus, the Bedrock Mountain Clogs filled a gap in my closet for this particular kind of shoe. Their zero-drop platform checked an important foot-friendly box, and given the sturdiness of the Mountain Clogs, I expect them to stay zero drop for a long, long time (by comparison, my two-year old LUNA Monos now have a 3mm drop from heel to toe because I've worn down the Vibram Morflex so much).

Regarding the shape of the footbed, I have plain ol' average arches. Not high or low. Just in the middle. So when I read folks critiquing the Mountain Clogs (slightly) curvy interior insole, it surprised me. My foot doesn't much notice the curves. I suppose footbed’s slightly curvy shape suits my average arches well.

That said, the insole texture of the Mountain Clog threw me off initially and I still don't love it. Wearing them barefoot, I just feel too much texture. It's a little gritty. I don't want to feel that texture on the bottom of my bare foot — but I'm more than happy to feel the soft suede interior of the nubuck!

However, worn with socks, which is how I wear my Bedrock Mountain Clogs most always, I don't mind the footbed texture at all. In fact, socks get in front of other potential clog-related problems of breathability, wicking moisture away from the foot. So worn, I can wear Mountain Clogs all day.

I trusted Bedrock's advice to size up, even with a bit of trepidation. I’m most typically a 10.5, but I wear 11s in my 7-year-old-pair of Bedrock Sandals. So I sized up to 12, which seemed crazy to me at the time, and they fit well once adjusted.

Here, the three-point strap system allows you to G-Lock in your straps on the inside and at the heel, making it possible to lock down the sandals with the ladder lock as needed. I usually set it and forget it for casual wear, keeping them looser so I can slip them on and off with ease.

One literal catch. The outer ladder lock occasionally snags on my pant or jean hems, which can pull the lock up, releasing the tension and loosening the strap mid-step. It’s an infrequent issue and surprising when it happens.

Another thing to note. The heel strap, while secure, has at times agitated my heel. Candidly, I can't make much sense of this because it's not a phenomenon I've ever noticed on the dozens of other sandals with heel straps that I've worn over the years. However, one user review cited how they felt the heel strap was too low. And now that this has been brought to my attention, I wonder if a higher placement up my Achilles might improve the fit.

Mountain Clog durability: Built for the long haul

Durability has been a strong suit for Bedrock Sandals for years. Look back up at the photo of the heel straps and you'll notice at the far left my pair of 8-year-old Bedrock Sandals Cairn. They are still holding strong despite being go-to sandals for many a summer.

Meanwhile, the nubuck leather of the Mountain Clog has aged well and despite looking worn, as they should look, is holding up strong.

The Vibram sole shows minimal wear with no significant tread loss to speak of after 19 months of regular use. Mind that I’ve kept my activities tame: errands, chasing kids, walks on mixed surfaces, occasional, non-rigorous trails.

The rubber toe cap is holding up just fine too. For my purposes, they feel sturdy and reliable.

Clog performance

The Mountain Clog’s performance varies by context. In light rain and damp terrain, the leather and Vibram sole manage just fine. I've yet to feel like I was about to slip. Water beads off initially. But these clogs aren't waterproof and no one would expect them to be. Prolonged exposure to water will eventually soak through the nubuck, sure. The bigger issue is the design of every clog — a huge hole in the back.

However, that 16mm stack height gets you off the ground, so on casual trails or in shallow puddles, you can get away with dry feet. As for rocky terrain, the Mountain Clogs handle uneven ground confidently.

What about dirt and debris with the Mountain Clogs?

Speaking of that hole in the back, like most every clog I've ever tried, the Mountain Clogs are no exception when it comes to debris sneaking into them under certain scenarios. One recent experience was just going after an errant baseball that was pitched wildly past some landscaping into a lightly wooded terrain with fallen leaves, pinestraw, and other detritus. That's the kinda situation where stuff will get into the Mountain Clogs — and you'll have to shake it out. Easy in also means easy out, usually.

What about the weight of the Mountain Clogs?

The overall platform of the Mountain Clog is beefy. These things are not to be trifled with. Just consider they weigh more than the Altra Lone Peak Hiker boots I have (those are high-top Altra Lone Peaks). The sole is also pretty rigid. If you bend the sole in hand, it'll flex at the ball of the foot — and yes, the Mountain Clogs have a bit of toe spring to them.

How about the strapping mechanism of the Mountain Clogs?

I mentioned I most often wear the Mountain Clogs loose, but in a pinch, you can crank down the top strap using the ladder lock running on the outside of the Clogs in order to more firmly secure the Clogs to your feet. And that works well enough.

You can also use the heel strap and inside strap to tighten the fit just like regular Bedrock Sandals (like the Cairn 3D Pro). The Clogs feature a very similar strap style to most Bedrocks, for that matter. The difference comes with the use of a clog design — i.e., the Mountain Clogs have that spacious toe box instead of a toe post (or "thong") running between your two big toes.

Mind, the use of a toe post, itself, is no guarantee of a locked-on fit either. Really, if you want the most "locked on" footwear, your options are either to bind the feet (as with climbing shoes) or to wrap a sole as closely to the foot as possible — as with toe shoes.

In any case, this design choice — a requirement of a clog — means your foot can slide around at the front more, making this attachment mechanism overall less secure than many huaraches-style sandals. In my experience, this just makes me a little less sure-footed. I find that with clogs my feet compensate for this by trying to grip the footbed (through my toes) or creating pressure to the top of the clog (also by bending my toes). If you've worn clogs, you probably know what I'm talking about.

For light adventures, most often, I don't think anyone's going to find the strap mechanism with the Mountain Clogs a problem — you'll likely use your toes to create tension at the front of the Clogs to improve foot-to-sole adherence too. It's just something to keep in mind.

How is the ground feel in the Mountain Clogs?

Do not get these expecting a lot of ground feel because that is not what the Mountain Clogs offer. That's a-okay for me, and I didn't expect anything more. They are called "Mountain Clogs," after all — a name that sounds more bombproof than barefoot. Know what you're stepping into, and make peace with it.

The good news? You can wear them all day without fatigue or discomfort, and the straps eliminate the flop of other clogs (e.g., Bostons, Crocs). In urban settings, the Mountain Clog is a practical daily driver. I’ve worn it to work (a fairly casual office) and time and time again for everything from grocery store visits to family outings and wouldn't worry in the least if I had a surprise need to go on a multi-mile hike. The Mountain Clogs became a regular in my closet, and if you're looking for a shoe that can be worn every day, these work for that.

Sizing the Mountain Clogs

I know. I too wish Bedrock offered half sizes. Maybe one day! Until then, we'll have to make do with sizing worries. This is me for reference. Historically a 10.5 in various shoes.

The bad news for me is that I'm much older today than when I started BirthdayShoes (2009 to 2025), and apparently foot lengthening is a thing with age. Turns out my feet measure right at 11" long, which if I recall, is at least an ⅛ of an inch longer than 15 years ago. But I still wear 10½s in various shoes, including LUNA Monos, for example.

In any event, let's talk Bedrock sizing. In the photos below are my feet seen on a ruler, in size 11 Bedrock Sandal Cairns, and size 12 Bedrock Sandal Mountain Clogs. Notice how I just about max out the size 11 Cairn sandals. Then notice how there's a bit more room in the Mountain Clogs — that photo is with my big toe all the way to the front of the Clogs (where I feel the upper a bit on my toe, but it's not rammed up against it).

I think I could probably go a half size down if it existed, just like I could argue I might go a half size up in the Cairns. Alas, I can't know. Ultimately, I think there's a bit of luck to sizing here, but I think the error favors going a little bigger than a little too small because you can always shorten the length of the Mountain Clogs at the heel strap and adjust the top straps to your liking.

But how do they look? That's up to you

Paired with jeans, I think the Bedrock Mountain Clogs, to the extent they have a look, look outdoorsy and rugged. Really though, they can bend a bit in the direction you want to take them. Because the shoes draw on so many different designs, they're a little hard to place though the prevailing takeaway is, perhaps, something like "upscale utilitarian" if not a little "adventurous granola." Or how about hipster hobbit?

Though the Mountain Clogs are not sleek or polished enough for formal settings, they are plenty versatile for any laid-back outing, occasion, or adventure. Here's them paired with a regular pair of jeans — and more how I might wear them casually.

Worn with jeans or casual chinos, the Mountain Clogs do just fine. In professional contexts, it’s a stretch though a stretch I've made plenty of times. And for more relaxed work environments, own the look.

You can't compare the Mountain Clog to other footwear

The Bedrock Mountain Clog doesn’t slot neatly into any one category, which makes comparisons interesting.

It’s obviously not a Birkenstock Boston. It’s not so minimalist as other barefoot shoes. Bedrock’s sandals or ultra-barefoot shoes; the 12.5-ounce weight and cushioned footbed set it apart. Against something like the Xero Shoes Scrambler Mid, it’s less trail-focused and more casual- or light-hike friendly.

The Mountain Clog occupies a niche it created: a foot-friendly clog with enough grit for light adventures. If you want a slip-on that can handle mixed terrain and daily life, it’s a contender.

But if you need ultralight simplicity, want ground feel in your shoes, or desire a less unique look, the Clogs aren't for you. If you feel like they're for you, you're probably going to love them.

What about value?

Is the Mountain Clog worth ~$175 before tax? After 19 months, I'm happy with my purchase, and if you want a shoe that can do a lot, I'm sure you can find a way to use the Mountain Clogs for most anything. And they'll last a long time too.

That said, they aren't my pick for serious hikes — boots or even certain sandals still win there for me. But for casual versatility, I like the Mountain Clogs. Size up, pair it with socks, and embrace its quirks, and you’ve got a clog that’ll last years.

Conclusion

The Bedrock Mountain Clog is a rugged, comfortable clog-like sandal-shoe. Sizing requires care, and the design has innate limitations for your biggest adventures. But the Mountain Clogs serve an obvious niche and people love them — including me.

So if you want a slip-on that can handle light trails, urban strolls, and everything in between, it’s a thoughtful choice.

Earth Runners Sandals - Reconnecting Feet with Nature

Sole

The Ion Sync Tolos fits true to size and features a wide toe box that should accommodate most foot shapes comfortably. While I believe Earth Runners may brand all of their closed-toe shoes under the "Ion Sync" name, for simplicity’s sake, I’ll refer to this particular model as the Tolos for the remainder of this review.

As someone who loved Earth Runners’ Elemental sandals—especially for their blend of simplicity, durability, and excellent groundfeel—I was genuinely excited to see the brand venture into closed-toe shoes with the Ion Sync Tolos. The Elementals had become a staple for me, largely due to the Vibram Gumlite sole, which masterfully balanced firmness and cushioning, with just enough lug definition to handle both trails and pavement with ease.

So when the Tolos dropped, I had pretty high expectations. The standout feature here is the proprietary iON SYNC composite sole, developed in collaboration with a high-end materials company known for working with tech giants like Tesla and Apple. That certainly sounds promising on paper, but for me, it’s all about how the sole actually feels and performs during real-world use.

Compared to the Gumlite outsole in the Elementals, the Tolos’ sole feels softer, more flexible, and noticeably gummier underfoot. The tread pattern is smoother and less aggressive, signaling a design more focused on urban or casual wear rather than rugged outdoor terrain. The total stack height clocks in at 8.5mm—3.5mm of outsole rubber paired with a 5mm foam insole—keeping the shoe firmly in minimalist territory. Interestingly, that makes the Tolos feel even more grounded than the thinnest Elemental sandals, which use a slightly thicker 7.5mm rubber sole.

One surprise I encountered was the insole situation. My usual habit with minimalist shoes is to remove the insole to maximize groundfeel and create more interior space. But here, the earthing plug runs right through the insole, anchoring it firmly in place. The plug is a small mushroom-shaped nub that’s wider than the hole in the insole it passes through, so once you remove the insole, reinserting it is nearly impossible without damaging or stretching the foam. I learned this the hard way after instinctively pulling out the insole before my first run.

Normally, removable insoles offer some nice customization—you can keep them in for a snugger fit and a bit more cushion or take them out for a roomier, more sensitive underfoot experience. Unfortunately, that flexibility is essentially off the table here unless you’re okay with some permanent modification.

Despite this, the Tolos still delivers a very respectable barefoot feel for a closed-toe shoe. It’s flexible both longitudinally and torsionally, and the grip holds up well on sidewalks, gym floors, and packed dirt trails. That said, I do wonder why Earth Runners chose to move away from Vibram. The Gumlite compound in their Elemental sandals offered an excellent trifecta of traction, durability, and comfort, and it feels like it could’ve elevated the Tolos even further. The iON SYNC sole works well enough for everyday use, but for those coming from the Elementals, it’s a definite shift in both feel and purpose.

The gummier, more pliable sole seems to bring the Tolos closer in feel to shoes like Feelground, which leans heavily into the lifestyle segment. Earth Runners, on the other hand, have historically been known for do-it-all sandals that bridge casual and rugged use seamlessly. So I’m left wondering if Vibram’s Gumlite might have been a better fit to maintain that all-terrain, tough-as-nails reputation, or if Earth Runners are intentionally steering the Tolos toward a softer, more lifestyle-oriented niche.

As someone who typically runs barefoot, I’m pretty sensitive to anything that interrupts the natural feel underfoot—and I can definitely feel the earthing plug at the bottom of the Tolos unless I keep the insole in. It’s not painful, but it’s noticeable enough to be a distraction, especially during longer wear or more dynamic movement. I do wonder if there’s a way to redesign the plug to sit flatter against the sole, or perhaps integrate it higher up in the shoe’s construction—maybe embedded within the midsole or footbed layer.

I fully respect that grounding is central to Earth Runners’ philosophy, and I’m not suggesting they remove that feature—it’s part of what makes their footwear unique. That said, in their sandals, the plug is cleverly built into the toe post, where it’s functionally invisible and doesn’t interfere with footstrike. With a closed-toe shoe, I imagine it’s more complicated, but I can’t help thinking there might be a more ergonomic or discreet way to maintain the earthing connection without compromising that smooth, barefoot-like experience.

Earth Runners are among my go-to sandals, so I was naturally curious how their approach would translate into a closed-toe shoe. I’ve always appreciated their minimalist construction, durable materials, and strong groundfeel—elements that don’t always carry over cleanly into shoes. Moving from sandals to sneakers often means sacrificing some of that raw connection to the ground, so I came into the Tolos with both interest and a bit of skepticism.

Running in the Tolos, though, turned out to be a pleasant surprise. I had expected them to lean more heavily toward casual, everyday wear, but they held up well during short runs and sprints. The outsole is flexible, the upper is light and unrestrictive, and the shoe overall moves with your foot in a way that supports natural mechanics. Groundfeel is preserved better than I expected—there’s enough padding for comfort, but not so much that it dulls your awareness of the terrain.

What stood out most during runs was the balance: the forefoot has enough width and give for natural toe splay, the heel stays put without rubbing or slipping, and the lack of rigid structure gives your foot the freedom to work without feeling sloppy. I wouldn’t personally take them on high-mileage road runs or technical trails—the sole isn’t really built for that—but for barefoot-style runners who prioritize feel and feedback, the Tolos get a lot right.

Traction is adequate for urban and park settings: pavement, grass, hard-packed dirt. I wouldn’t push it on wet roots or steep loose gravel, but for everyday terrain, it’s solid. The fit is close but not constricting, and the inner bootie-style construction adds comfort without friction points. I wore them without socks and didn’t run into any issues with hotspots or chafing.

For experienced barefoot runners, the Tolos may feel more capable than they first appear. They straddle that line between laid-back sneaker and minimalist trainer—maybe not your next race-day shoe, but certainly something you can run in when you feel like it, without needing to change into anything else.

Materials

I really appreciate how the interior of the Tolos looks thoughtfully finished and complete—even if you were to remove the insole (though, as I mentioned earlier, the insole isn’t really designed to come out). The materials inside feel lightweight without ever crossing into feeling cheap, and the overall finish is polished without feeling overly manufactured or sterile.

The upper is made from a thin, breathable polymesh that fits snugly around the foot. I absolutely love the texture—it reminds me of sailcloth watch straps, which gives it a subtle yet interesting visual character. Designed for maximum mobility, the upper bends and flexes easily with your foot, offering almost slipper-like comfort thanks to its integrated “tongueless” construction.

The shoe’s build feels like a mesh sock stitched inside a sturdier sock, with the inner layer providing ventilation around the tongue area, while the outer layer is less breathable but adds durability. This dual-layer approach avoids stiff overlays and excess bulk, focusing on a seamless connection between foot and shoe.

Materials and details reinforce a sleek, futuristic lightweight aesthetic—like the fabric eyelets that hold the rounded laces. That said, I did notice a few exposed foam edges around the outer shell where it was cut; these might benefit from being sealed or finished more carefully to give an even more refined appearance.

Protection and structure mainly come from the color-matched toe and heel caps, which guard against scuffing and wear. Aside from these, the shoe remains flexible and fluid in shape. There’s also a good amount of padded cushioning around the collar, plus a heel loop that makes slipping the shoe on easier.

Aesthetics

The Tolos are among the better-looking minimalist shoes out there. They don’t broadcast their barefoot roots loudly—which is a plus for anyone seeking minimalist function wrapped in a more conventional, wearable style. The all-black colorway is especially versatile, pairing effortlessly with everything from joggers to jeans. The silhouette strikes a nice balance, hinting at light trail-runner performance without tipping into overtly technical or bulky territory. They look fast and sleek, even though they seem designed more for casual, everyday wear. Future Improvements

For future iterations, it would be interesting to see a slightly more aggressive version of the Tolos —something with a water-resistant upper. Obviously, I would want to see the return of Gumlite, but at least a tread design that gives more traction, without sacrificing that good groundfeel.

A goal of 10,000 steps a day is everywhere — on fitness trackers, in health blogs, and even in casual conversation. But the goal is a myth.

Yes, the whole "10,000 steps a day" as a way to improve your health is made-up. Turns out that in 1965, a Japanese company launched a pedometer called the “10,000-step meter,” named not for science but because the character for 10,000 (万) looks like a walking figure. This was a marketing ploy — and a genius one — because it created a benchmark most people know and millions chase.

The real surprise? Even though 10,000 steps a day is a myth, it kinda sorta works. Adding more movement to your day in the form of simply hitting more steps improves your health. Turns out the arbitrariness doesn’t matter.

Even if you don't like "10,000" (I didn't), you can set your own arbitrary steps per day goal — and maybe you should! Because setting your own daily, weekly, or annual step goal, even a made-up one, will challenge you to move more. Assuming you've set a step goal that's beyond your normal day-to-day movement, the next step is to figure out how to change your life to achieve it — more movement won't just happen.

For me, I set my own arbitrary benchmark a little over two years ago. My goal was to hit 13,700 steps every day, which would get me to 5 million steps in a year. It took 20 months and several failures, but I hit my 5,000,000 step goal last September. I've kept it going ever since. What I learned during this process was the power of the goal. 13,699 steps every day wouldn't just happen. I needed to learn a few things to change my lifestyle.

So that's what I did. I tinkered and experimented, discovering strategies to add steps to my day. Fast-forward, walking and even running have become part of my process — added to my own personal fitness religion.

I had to figure it out. Because your benchmark will be your own, you'll have to find your own approach. But if you pursue it, the result will be a toolbox of daily practices and rituals that lead to more movement and a healthier, likely happier, life — from the ground up.

How do you add more steps to my daily life?

I know my own rituals, but what are others were doing?

To answer this question, I turned to Reddit’s r/walking community, digging through posts and comments for practical strategies, knowing that they, like me, had to figure out how to add movement to their otherwise more stationary lives.

I’ve organized their ideas into categories below. And you can jump to the end for a cheat sheet ⤵. They are all drawn from people who’ve made movement a natural part of their days. Some step strategies surprised me. I saw little mention of minimalist or barefoot shoes, but I also know that adjusting to less shoe and learning how to walk with less impact takes time.

See what strategies you find useful. You can move more than you think, and a personal benchmark — arbitrary or not — is a constraint that can make you creative, sparking new rituals for movement in your day-to-day life.

Set goals that you can believe in

First things first. Unreasonable step goals are too intimidating and will set you up for failure. So don't be unreasonable! Start where you are. How many steps do you take in a day right now? Don't know? Find out.

Now, ask yourself what would be a stretch number to hit? In this case, maybe don't aim for the stars in order to hit the moon. You're instead aiming for long-term success.

One Redditor shared, “At first, I didn’t even aim for 5k and thought I could only do a mile” (u/Curious-Ferret-948). By setting small, achievable targets, they worked up to 10,000 steps without feeling overwhelmed.

Another approach is to set a primary goal, like 12,000 steps, and a minimum you won’t dip below, like 8,000. “There needs to be a North Star you are working toward, but also a number you’re not going to accept less than” (u/OConFit). What I like about this approach is that it keeps you motivated while allowing wiggle room for life’s unpredictability.

Set times to walk

Don't expect you'll find time to walk. Instead, make time. Break your goal into chunks, and set aside time (or times) for dedicated movement.

One Redditor found that “three 30 min walks, once in the morning, during lunch, and in the evening” got them to 7,000–8,000 steps, leaving them “proud and accomplished” (u/Airplane_al_la_mode). Chunking your walks is a simple way to anchor moments in your day.

Mornings are the most reliable window. One user walks 7,500 steps after dropping kids at the bus stop, noting it’s “the only time of the day over which I possess a modicum of control” (u/sirgrotius). I've got three kids at three different schools, but there's a window after the first hops on the bus that I can get at least 30 minutes of walking in. As a result, the morning walk has become a staple in my own routine.

Though I don't always get to take that walk outside, when I do, every so often I meet all kinds of friends along the way. This morning was unusually active:

What about running? Well, for bigger step goals, a 1-hour jog can add 10,000 steps fast: “Jogging is imo the best way to add steps quickly” (u/Arrival117).

I had given up on running because of knee pain before I began chasing 5 million steps — only to discover after working up to it that, in fact, I could run pain-free now.

On the other hand, you don't have to have 30 minutes or an hour to make movement happen. Even short bursts count. One Redditor sets hourly reminders for brief strolls, reaching “close to 10k with no real effort” (u/fake-august). These dedicated moments, whether a morning loop or a lunch break lap, become rituals that ground your movement practice.

Snack on movement

You don’t always need extra time — just different habits. Everyday tasks can become step opportunities.

One Redditor walks during phone calls: “Any call I have during the day… I take the call on a committed walk” (u/OConFit). Another paces the living room while watching TV (u/teeger9).

Work breaks, commutes, or waiting at kids’ activities are perfect for steps. One user fits in two 15-minute walks at work and a 30-minute evening stroll (u/Kitten_Mittens). These moments slip into your routine without much effort.

Small choices add up too. Park farther away, take the stairs, or be inefficient at the grocery store. (One Redditor traverses his entire grocery store, covering “the outside completely… and up and down every single aisle” — u/RobbieAt2023.)

Work at a desk job in an office? Take the most meandering bathroom break, walking up or downstairs to a different building hallway bathroom. These tweaks turn daily tasks into rituals that boost your step count.

People, pets, and places

Walking with other people — or pets — can make movement double the fun.

One Redditor values walks with a partner for “just talking and communicating” (u/OConFit). Pets are a powerful motivator — one user’s 3–4 daily dog walks help her hit 23,000 steps (u/rebeccafromla).

Kids can drive steps too. One Redditor gets 8,000–12,000 from school runs and tasks, saying, “Having kids helps a lot” (u/Arrival117). When weather or safety limits outdoor walks, adapt — one user walks in Lowe’s with her goldendoodle: “I go into my local Lowe’s store and walk up and down the aisles” (u/RobbieAt2023).

Recently, Mrs. BirthdayShoes and I have gone on walks together, listening to the same podcast series at the same time (The Telepathy Tapes, if you're curious). This gives us a chance to be together, have a common experience, and feel active at the same time. We even get to fake mind reading.

Your environment shapes your rituals. One Redditor averages 19,000 steps because his walkable area makes it “very easy” (u/KnoxCastle). If your surroundings aren’t ideal, find indoor spots or nearby walkable areas to keep moving.

Use tools when you need to

You need very little to get more movement. With the right attitude and reasonably natural surfaces, you could probably get by getting loads and loads of miles in barefoot.

That said, the right tools can support your movement rituals, and there's no reason not to use technology when it makes sense.

A walking pad ($99–$150) or full-on treadmill lets you log steps indoors. One Redditor hits 10,000 during a movie, calling it “cozy cardio” (u/secret_redditor1993). Without a pad, another gets 20,000 steps by noon “walking circles around my house” (u/LXS_R).

Many people have figured out how to use a standing desk and treadmill to log steps while working. I've done this plenty of times, though I confess: I don't love typing while walking unless it's short bursts of text. Your "mileage may vary" here, and if walking while working works for you, great.

Given the focus of BirthdayShoes is minimalist footwear, I default to wearing shoes that are zero-drop, foot friendly, flexible, and lightweight. As BirthdayShoes readers know, minimalist shoes encourage natural movement by getting out of the way of the natural function of the foot. They are lightweight and great for all kinds of surface. There are lots of minimalist footwear options for hiking too.

I'll hold on rehashing the benefits of more foot-friendly footwear here — and if you're new to the concept, here's a decent place to start.

Make movement a game

Adding steps can feel like a creative challenge, a game where you outsmart your routine. Make movement play, and you'll move more.

Look for hidden opportunities — walk to a farther coffee shop, can you pace during a podcast, or turn waiting time into wandering? It’s about spotting those moments and making them count. r/walking is full of people who have set to hitting multiple tens of thousands of steps in a single day — as many as 50K in a day or more. I've never done that, but reading their stories gets me thinking.

The big shift comes from treating movement as a puzzle. Challenge yourself to add 1,000 steps before lunch or explore a new route.

Being creative within constraints is fun, keeping things interesting. You reframe from dreading a step goal to hunting for clever ways to meet your benchmark.

Stay open, curious, and accrue small victories. Perfection is not the goal — which brings me to the last tip.

Finally, show grace to yourself (and keep going)

Lastly, my biggest strategy for success is a simple one: Show a little grace and patience to yourself, and get back up when you inevitably stumble.

A life that's healthy, happy, and strong doesn't come by following a rote set of rules or behaviors. Remember: Real life's a mess and when you start doing things, reality pushes back.

So when you trip or fall — or twist your ankle on the day you're set to achieve your 5,000,000 step goal as I did — know that's just part of the process. Setbacks are signs you're on the right path.

Your job is to keep pushing until change happens. Keep going. You are going to win.

Steps cheat sheet

Need ideas to hit your step benchmark? Here’s a cheat sheet of practical ways to weave movement into your day, with estimated step counts based on average stride lengths (2.5 feet) and typical paces. Mix and match to suit your rituals.

🚶‍♂️‍➡️ 1-hour walk (20-minute-mile pace): ~6,000 steps. A brisk morning or evening stroll covers this. If you walk with a quicker step, you can get close to 8,000 in an hour (15-minute-mile pace).

🏃‍♂️ 1-hour jog (10-minute-mile pace): ~10,000 steps. Jogging packs steps into less time for big goals (180 steps/minute is a good cadence for healthy running, so at a 10-minute-mile pace for an hour, you can expect to hit about 10,800 steps!).

🛒 Grocery shopping (30 minutes, leisurely): ~2,000–3,000 steps. Walk every aisle and the perimeter.

🅿️ Parking farther away (200 feet extra each way): ~150–200 steps per trip. Do this at stores or work.

🏢 Taking the stairs (1 flight, 10 steps): ~20–30 steps per flight. Skip the elevator a few times daily.

🦮 15-minute dog walk: ~1,500–2,000 steps. Multiple pet walks add up fast.

☎️ Pacing during a 10-minute phone call: ~1,000 steps. Pop in your earbuds, and move around instead of sitting.

⚾️ 30-minute wait at kids’ practice: ~2,500–3,000 steps. Lap the field or parking lot.

🧻 Walking to a farther bathroom (100 feet round trip): ~80–100 steps. Choose the farthest one.

📺 20-minute “Netflix and 'mill” on a treadmill (or walking pad): ~2,000–2,500 steps. Move while watching a show.

"What are those ... toe shoes?" This is one of the first questions that runs through the minds of someone when they see those "shoes that look like feet" — "toe shoes" — for the first time. And no, I'm not talking about ballet shoes nor "steel toe shoes," but the latest iteration of footwear, complete with articulated toe pockets.

I'm talking about the pioneers of toe shoes — Vibram FiveFingers. FiveFingers showed up around 2006 and could be said to have spawned the whole "barefoot running shoes" minimalist shoes market single-handedlyfootedly. I'm also talking about Fila Skele-toes, which arrived in early 2011. And then came the Adidas Adipure Trainers in Fall 2011.

By year's end 2011, there were no fewer than five manufacturers of shoes with toes. (Fast-forward to 2025 and there are many more — and many that have disappeared since.)

The question: "What are those ... toe shoes?" begs a bigger question:

Why toe shoes?

And to answer this question, we start at first principles by asking:

"What's the purpose of a shoe, anyway?"

To answer this, we approach the question from the perspective of function (form being assumed subjective). Shoes exist to support the function of the foot and the movement of the human body.

Now we're getting somewhere. And here is where we enter the world of "barefoot shoes" or "minimalist footwear," of which "toe shoes" are perhaps the most popular iteration.

For both barefoot shoes and toe shoes, the aim is to let feet be feet in all their dynamic, sensational glory. The belief is that using footwear that supports natural movement encourages a healthier engagement with the world, starting from the ground up. The expectation is for wearers of toe shoes and other barefoot or minimalist footwear to have stronger feet and legs, to learn smarter movement patterns, and to incur less injury and even less pain.

You might think of "toe shoes" like a square as to the rectangle of "barefoot shoes." Both are similar, and both are helpful. But to understand how they differ, we need to go deeper — including discussion of prevailing types of footwear. And before that, we should examine the most common types of footwear.

That way we understand better what barefoot shoes and toe shoes are not.

How normal shoes fail to work

When you think about it, it's obvious that shoes aren't necessary for getting about — we can run and walk and play barefoot without injuring ourselves. If this wasn't true, the human race would have likely gone extinct a long time ago. The bottom line is that we are born barefoot, that Nikes and all modern footwear (having elevated heels, cushioned soles, etc.) have only been around for hundreds of years. The emergence of Homo erectus was something like 1.3 to 1.8 million years ago with homo sapiens emerging a couple hundred thousand years back.

Barefoot is the default human condition whereas shoes are a technology created by humans to adapt to different surfaces.

If barefoot is the default state of our feet, it follows that the default design of footwear should be to support that state — e.g., providing benefit to the foot (protection, insulation, or even style) while still allowing for the default (bare) function of the foot.

But most shoes don't do this at all. Modern shoes have hard soles — or thick cushy soles. Shoe lasts (the "last" is the shape of the interior of the shoe) are shaped like wedges elevating our heels. Modern shoes ram our toes into narrowing boxes. Some shoes use springs or air to bounce us from step to step while others intentionally make us walk funny to tone our butts. Shoes that allow for feet to flex dynamically with each step and sense the ground — they are the exception.

The naked human foot is a bone-filled, muscular, nerve-laden body part; one that has five appendages (toes) and interacts dynamically with the earth in all its variations. It does this thousands upon thousands of times a day each time bearing our brute weight multiple times over. Creating a shoe that allows for the full dynamic functionality of a bare foot would be an incredible feat of engineering.

What typically happens when we add to our naked feet—our "birthday shoes"—prosthetics in the form of external soles is that the natural state of the foot is circumvented and the foot and body are forced to compensate in often weird and painful ways. Somewhere down the line things start to fall apart.

Feet are complicated and alive; shoes are dead and simple; can we even design a "smart" shoe?

How should a shoe support natural foot movement and function?

Can a shoe be designed that simultaneously improves on the default state of the bare foot while still letting it function naturally?

We are finally finding out. Over the last several years, we have seen real experimentation in shoe design and manufacturing in support of foot-friendly footwear.

So what makes a shoe "foot-friendly"? Below I'll explore a few expectations to consider. But you will — and must — make your own determination as to what's important for the strength of your feet, your body, and your mind.

As for me, I'll disclaim my bias: I'm skeptical any shoe (as yet in existence or theoretical) could support the naked functionality of the bare foot. But I wear shoes every day for all kinds of purposes, and I'm not dogmatic about them meeting all the below design requirements.

Because like Walt Whitman, "I am large, I contain multitudes" — and you do too.

Barefoot shoe design requirement No. 1:
Support foot movement

Feet flex and bend and have toes that splay naturally without any conscious effort with every step taken.

Toes give your foot purchase on the ground as they expand, stabilizing the foot with an instantly customized grip—like the roots of a tree. How do you replicate this rooting of the foot while wearing a shoe?

With a thick tendon at the heel (the Achilles) and all the arch-supporting internal musculature and bones, our feet and legs are awesome springs — pistons perhaps. How do you maintain the springy energy caught via the elastic design of the arch or the rubber band-like tendons?

Supporting foot movement likely means that shoes should be lightweight and keep your feet literally close to the ground.

Barefoot shoe design requirement No. 2:
Allow feet to feel the ground

Feet are sensitive. Test this out by taking off all footwear and walking outside onto pavement or concrete. If you own a pair of minimalist shoes like Vibram FiveFingers and haven't done this, you really need to take a moment and go outside barefooted. Do it already.

The sensations you'll experience actually barefoot are profound even relative to what you feel wearing a pair of minimalist shoes (like Vibram FiveFingers Classics or Soft Star Mocs). Your feet will feel the rough texture of the cement and the dustiness of the dirt. As you walk around barefoot you'll find yourself stepping more gingerly; you'll adjust your gait without even paying much attention to it. In the event that you step on something sharp you will instantly correct your weight and reduce impact (and avoid pain). It's instant, natural, and sorta awesome.

The sensations in your feet direct how you step. The sensitivity of the foot, perhaps more than anything else, is why running barefoot teaches you proper, impact-reduced form. Abrasive friction (dragging your feet across the ground, pulling, or pushing the pads of your feet against the earth) will cause damage. A bare foot is susceptible to being rubbed raw if friction isn't minimized. And of course there's the risk of stepping on a sharp pebble or rock that could puncture the foot, but those are one-off problems often avoidable by a watchful eye.

One of the biggest selling points of a shoe is that they protect the foot, but the protection of a shoe comes at a price. Protection impairs the sensitivity of our feet, reducing the need to minimize friction against the earth.

Is it possible for a shoe to both protect the foot without muting feedback from the ground?

Barefoot shoe design requirement No. 3: Support the proprioception of the foot

Beyond just experiencing the ground directly, our feet have an awareness of where they are with respect to the rest of the body and surrounding objects. This perception of space is called proprioception. Feet sense their place in space.

Proprioceptive sense reminds me of being coordinated. Proprioception is what makes it seem easy to perform delicate procedures quickly and without conscious effort. It enables us to catch an accidentally dropped glass before it crashes and facilitates touch-typing 100 words per minute without looking at a keyboard. How is the proprioceptive sense of the foot maintained when wrapped in a shoe?

Footwear should get out of the way of feet

Taking the above general criteria and applying them to footwear, a barefoot-supporting shoe must:

1. Allow the foot to feel the ground — not simply because the ground is interesting to feel, but because sensing the ground directs the foot how to step.
2. Allow the foot to sense it's surroundings — just as clown shoes would be extremely clumsy as they would extend far past the ends and sides of the foot, so must functional shoes fit well enough that a foot's sense of it's surroundings remains intact.
3. Allow the foot to move naturally — if the arch of the foot wants to flex (like a bow) as it bears your weight, then a shoe should let it. If your toes want to splay out on impacting the ground, they should be free to do so. If they want to flex upward, that, too, must be considered.

These criteria are simple enough, right? Just remember why we're even bothering with shoes in the first place: protection. How do we add protection and provide for function?

Two primary solutions have been offered to solve this problem: toe shoes and traditional, mono-toed shoes. Let's talk about both — and I'll finally argue why I think toe shoes are the present, best solution for minimalist footwear.

Thin-soled foot mittens vs. minimalist sandals

What can we learn from mankind's history about footwear? Take a look at these ancient forms of footwear — five thousand year old leather shoes:

Moccasins are an ancient form of footwear, and while this may not be the canonized truth, this factoid on moccasins from Wikipedia seems to nail their purpose: "Moccasins protect the foot while allowing the wearer to feel the ground."

It's remarkable how little improved modern shoes are from the ancient design of a leather moccasin. Mocs work extraordinarily well as protective coverings for the feet that still allow the foot to function naturally. They are roomy on the inside, transmit a great deal of ground feel due to the sole being leather or fabric, and are neutral from heel-to-toe.

Fast forward to today and you can get some truly retro-yet-updated Soft Star, fabric-soled, sheepskin lined Moccasins; or for a slightly less-soft experience the RunAmocs, which feature a Vibram rubber sole. These represent a modern moccasin. These mocs function as expected—zero foot support, zero-drop from heel to toe, and a great deal of ground feel (an enormous amount for the fabric-soled varieties like Roo or Grippy Roo). These are great "barefoot shoes" so long as you don't mind the aesthetic of a moccasin.

Moccasins aren't the only ancient, low-tech options. Take the huaraches sandals of the Tarahumara Indians, for example. Huaraches are little more than a thin strip of sole material custom-cut to your foot size with a single lace to attach them to your feet. How's that for minimal? And if you're looking for a minimalist sandal that is foot friendly, grab a tire and some string and roll your own. Want a pre-made kit to make your own? Beyond low-tech, old-school footwear solutions like huaraches and moccasins, there are, of course, modern, foot-friendly options to consider, too — like Vivo Barefoots, for example. Really, just like huaraches, there are loads of "barefoot shoes" to consider these days.

There are some fantastic minimalist shoes that go a long way to allowing feet to do what they need to do. Unfortunately, as great as they are (and very often they're plenty good enough for most anything you need), when it comes to maximizing the barefoot-like experience while still being a shoe, most suffer from one central problem. And it's a simple problem to explain:

Typical shoes, because they don't take into consideration toes, can't come close to mirroring the full dynamic functionality and range of the foot.

The extent of this indictment varies from barefoot shoe to barefoot shoe. Even so, the problems faced my most shoes can be understood by example, through examination of the two age-old footwear solutions just discussed — i.e., moccasins and huaraches.

The venerable moccasin

Leather moccasins afford an immense amount of ground feel thanks to the flimsy nature of their leather-skinned, fabric-like soles. Mocs have a super roomy toe box that provides plenty of room for toe splaying, are lightweight, and don't feel constricting on the foot, either. They're meant to be worn barefoot.

For barefoot feel and comfort, my "elf shoe" moccasins (Grippy Soft Star Mocs) are basically unbeatable. So how don't they allow feet to be feet? Well, when you get super granular about it, my awesome moccasins suffer from a critical lack of functionality that seems intrinsic to their single-toe-boxed design.

Simply put, while the single, roomy toe box allows my foot to move independently from the shoe, it allows my foot to move independently from the shoe. Here's what I mean:

1. When running or walking, the sole has a tendency to drop away from my foot — even if only marginally — as my foot lifts off the ground.
2. Because the toe box is so roomy, the foot can move laterally within the shoe.
3. Because the shoes extend beyond the foot on the front and sides, the foot's proprioceptive sense is impaired.

These three things cause problems. They mean that the shoe hits the ground in advance of the foot thanks to the hanging sole. The extraneous material on the front and sides of the shoe can snag or stub on the ground.

How do you design a shoe with a roomy toe box that also is snug to the foot? This is a significant design challenge. Of course, the most common way to solve this problem is to use some form of tightening mechanism — straps, laces, elastic — over the simplest, least dynamic section of the foot (the middle) to snug up the soles and sides of the shoe to the foot. And this works remarkably well.

Once you see this problem — the "we need a big toe box but still need to attach the shoe to the foot" problem — you start noticing how other "barefoot shoes" have tried to solve it. The Merrell Barefoots are snug around midfoot and have a sole that curves up around the arch. The Merrells match their snug midfoot with a roomy toe box; thus, the foot has room to wiggle at the end, but the shoe still stays "locked on" thanks to wrapped-on middle of the shoe. The New Balance Minimus Trails use a similar approach with a stretchy rubberband-like material immediately before the roomy toe box.

Of course, once the roomy toe box problem is solved, you have a new problem — i.e., the heel problem. How do you keep that heel of the shoe close to the foot?

Most shoes use a cupping mechanism that also puts some pressure on the Achilles tendon. I actually think this usually works pretty well though putting pressure on a tendon doesn't strike me as ideal. Generally, shoes wrap around the ankle and then use the tightness at the ankle to keep the sole at a certain distance from this point.

Perhaps there's still some solution to adhering soles to heels.

The elegant, minimalist huaraches sandal

Huaraches are one of the most ingenious solutions for attaching a sole to a foot is the huaraches-style sandal. Huaraches work by pulling the sole up via one rope, cord, or strap. This string begins with a knot underneath the sole. The string punches through the sole material — which can be anything from leather to old rubber tire to a custom sole (as with LUNA and many other brands). This creates the "thong" that runs between the big toe and the second toe. The string then runs to the outside of the foot to a point below the ankle bone where it punches back through the sole before looping around and coming around the heel. It then punches back into the sole on the opposite side of the foot before running back to the front top of the foot where it can be knotted. Of course there are tons of other huaraches tying methods, but this basic structure works wonders.

Elegant in it's simplicity, the huaraches sole stays right on the foot at the foot's two least dynamic points, which are also the primary points of contact with the ground. Thus, the huaraches sole provides an ounce of protection where it's most desired while leaving the foot almost entirely bare everywhere else, free both to breath in the air and flex, twist, and bend.

The huaraches solution works incredibly well at solving problems 1 through 3. Yes, it's necessary to dial in the lacing of a pair of huaraches in order to prevent the sole from sliding laterally or front to back, but this isn't hard to do with old school huaraches — and it's very easy to do with most newer, modern versions of huaraches-inspired minimalist sandals.

So what's the catch with huaraches? This: When your foot dorisflexes (toes point skyward), the extra inch and a half sole past the strap doesn't go anywhere. It just hangs back. And depending on the rigidity of the rubber used in the huaraches, can sometimes snag on the ground, rolling under my foot.

Speaking of rubber rigidity, the huaraches require a slightly more rigid, flat (though it may mold/curve with use depending on the material used) sole material than you can get away with in a pair of leather moccasins. So a drawback to huaraches is that ground-feel is reduced.

In short, as 5-in-1 solutions go, both moccasins (and other shoes) and huaraches go a long way towards foot functionality, but tend to fall short when it comes to having soles that reflect the dynamic nature of the foot.

Toe shoes: Toe pockets mean locked-on soles

Moccasins, huaraches, and other new-fangled toe box shoes work really well. And with new designs, many are getting better and better.

However, from a design standpoint, toe shoes offer the most promise. They strike a balance between being a shoe that protects the foot through a flexible sole while still allowing the foot to move closer to it would barefoot.

The reason toe shoes work is because they are toe shoes, one pocket for each toe.

Why toe shoes work

A pocket for every toe as with shoes with articulated toes accomplishes the following:

• The sole gets locked into place at the ball of the foot — as with huaraches.
• The sole moves with the toes — for example, the sole lifts as toes lift (dorsiflex as with the photo above).
• The shoe, itself, takes on the shape of the foot, ending just past the end of the toes and hugging the foot closely, like a glove.

Together, toe shoes, as with Vibram FiveFingers, move dynamically, in concert with the foot. They also minimize extraneous materials around the foot, helping to maintain the proprioceptive ("place in space") of the foot.

Toe shoes aren't perfect

I'm not arguing that toe shoes are the pinnacle of minimalist footwear. Here are some important additional considerations:

• You've got to have a flexible sole. Look at Vibram FiveFingers Classics, Sprints, or KSOs for incredibly flexible rubber soles that minimize resistance against your foot when it flexes. "Minimize" is the operative word because as flexible as these most minimalist FiveFingers are, it still takes some work to curl toes down or up in these most basic Vibrams. Later models like the FiveFingers El-X (and El-X LS) are especially flexible.
  
  Comparatively speaking, Fila Skele-toes have a much stiffer rubber sole (read my review for details). This impairs the barefoot-function!
  
• Ideally you'd have custom length pockets set to your feet. Just as extraneous material on single toe box shoes (and minimalist sandals) might snag or catch surfaces while walking — or reduce the proprioceptive sense of the foot — so, too, do too long toe pockets on toe shoes. Not sure how to get custom-made rubber-toed soles (yet). At least a few people have hacked their FiveFingers to have varying toe lengths.
  
• For barefoot feel, the sole must also not be too thick or cushy. For feet to function more naturally they must feel the ground. Not all FiveFingers have great ground feel!

To the extent that toe shoes aren't flexible and compromise ground feel, they begin to lose that which makes them great shoes in the first place: they let feet be feet!

You wanted to know, "Why toe shoes?" Well, this is your answer. It's not simple, but the truth rarely is. In short, it is my opinion that toe shoes are the present best solution to being a "shoe" while offering the most barefoot-like experience.

Parting thought: Don't be dogmatic

But this is where I tell you a surprise. You do not have to wear toe shoes to benefit from going more minimalist with your footwear. You should aim to find shoes that help you move naturally, strengthen your body, and offer you the experience you need.

You have to be the judge of that. And no 4,000 word article should tell you differently.

As soon as I put one foot into the Vibram FiveFingers KMD Sports I knew they were going to be good. They are designed to be an all purpose running/cross training VFF. I’ve been hiking, trail running, and doing Crossfit in them for two months now and I’m hooked. I even hiked to the top of Yosemite’s Half Dome in them and would do it again in a heartbeat.

KMD Sport FiveFingers looks

The design of the KMD Sports doesn’t come across as sleek as some of the lace-up VFFs, but for a Velcro system they’re not too bad. My pair are light gray and black with some lime green highlighting in between the toes. There’s a mini honeycomb pattern on the straps with subtle areas of reflective tape (in the shape of three lines). I’d say they come across more techie than anything.

KMD Sport materials and construction

Fabric and Comfort — These are the most comfortable VFFs I’ve ever worn. This is a KSO (keep stuff out) model so the entire foot in enclosed. The upper is super stretchy and forms amazingly well to my foot. The interior is extremely soft and porous.

Footbed — There’s a soft 2mm seamless footbed that appears to be removable but it is partially glued in. I haven’t taken it out since it looks like it might destroy the fabric in there. They fit me perfect with the footbed, so I haven’t had a need to remove it. It looks just like the footbed in the Vibram KMD Sport LS that I reviewed (The "LS" is the laced model of the KMD Sport).

Closure — There are two Velcro straps. One across the top and one around the back of the heel.

Outsole — The tread on the bottom is the exact same as the KMD Sport LS. It’s low profile yet robust. The design is good for all purpose use for everything from off-road trails to concrete.

Weight — They are very lightweight at a mere combined weight of 10.3 ounces via my postal scale.

Cleaning — My VFFs usually get extremely dirty from the trails. I’ve thrown them in the wash several times (with the insert) and they came out looking like brand new. They just need a few hours to completely dry.

Fit, feel, and performance of the KMD Sport FiveFingers

The Vibram KMD Sport FiveFingers fit true to (FiveFingers) size. I wear a size 38 and they fit me perfect. Not too small, not too big. There’s enough room for my toes to breathe and expand in there which is important. I haven’t had any pain or hot spots after breaking them in. The first few days I took these out for a run I had a small problem with my big toes. There seemed to be some excess fabric in there from the upper seam causing some red marks and minor pain. It felt like a blister wanted to form, but it never did. It eventually went away after a few runs on the trail. Guess they just needed a little breaking in.

Another thing I’ve noticed is that no matter how much I try to tighten the heel strap there is always a very small opening around the back of the foot. Small pebbles and dirt tend to fly into the heel cup causing some friction. Also, as time goes on and the fabric stretches, I’ve had to tighten the strap around the heel more and more causing it to almost overshoot the loop area to secure it. The end of the strap hangs about halfway off but it hasn’t been a problem so far, it still stays secure. Eventually, I may have to perform surgery on the Velcro and sew it to a new spot. These things haven’t deterred me from wearing them though. It’s more of an annoyance than anything.

Feel/Performance — As for the performance, I couldn’t be happier with the results. Even though the tread is a little more rigid than say the Sprints, I still get great ground feel and dexterity. It’s definitely in that Goldilocks zone between the Sprints and the Treks. Just like the KMD Sport LS, the soles have amazing traction and I can turn on a dime on asphalt. As expected since this style is enclosed, it does wear a little hotter than the open style of the Sprints. There are some breathable areas on the top of the shoe and porous fabric on the inside to help the heat escape.

I put the tread to the ultimate grip test. I know these weren’t meant to be the ultimate trekking FiveFingers, but they did an amazing job and I wouldn’t do this hike in anything other than VFFs. Yosemite’s Half Dome was an intense 17-mile day hike taking around 10.5 hours to climb up to 8,800 feet in elevation. In the beginning there are an endless amount of rocky stairs that run alongside some massive waterfalls, then it turns into a regular dirt trail through the forest.

The final 400 feet to the top is the most famous thing about this climb. It’s an ascent on solid granite on about a 45 degree angle while holding onto nothing but two steel cables. It’s definitely dangerous if you are not careful and don’t have the proper gear. I saw people slipping and struggling in their boots at this steep angle, but my KomodoSports didn’t slip once. I was amazed at how well my soles gripped the granite. I felt like a gecko. The whole time people were asking me how I liked my shoes and wished that they had worn VFFs too! (Disclaimer: Don’t do this hike without training or knowing your limitations . . . it’s tough!)

KMD Sport conclusion

I’m addicted. I throw them on for any type of workout because they do everything so well and are extremely comfortable. Don’t be afraid to use them at the gym, running on trails, hiking/trekking, and for cross training, they can handle it. I wouldn’t hesitate to wear these again for even longer and more intense hikes than Half Dome too. My feet love the KMD Sports and I’ll probably wear them until they fall apart!

Pros of the KMD Sport

• Extremely soft and comfortable
• Grippy tread for all terrain
• Flexible toes and material
• Porous interior
• Easy to wash
• Perfect all purpose Vibram FiveFingers

Cons of the KMD Sport

• Wears slightly hotter
• Pebbles fly into back of heel on occasion
• Velcro strap around the back overshoots the area to secure it by about halfway
• Not as attractive as some of the other Vibrams

FiveFingers KMD Sport vs. KMD Sport LS

When deciding between the two, it's really a matter of personal taste and what you will mainly be using them for.

If I were to choose one over the other I'd pick the KMD Sport not for looks, but mainly because I'd feel more comfortable wearing them on longer trail runs and big hikes (which I do more of). There's less chance of debris getting into the top of the shoe since they don't have any laces. They also have the adjustable strap that goes around the back of the heel, which I like.

The LS definitely looks better, but I think they are best for going to the gym, cross training, and for short runs and not necessarily for higher mileage on dirt trails. Since the tongue is not gusseted, they may be prone to getting more debris trapped inside the laces.

It's hard to choose only one since they are both fantastic cross training VFFs. They're built with the exact same outsoles and are both extremely soft and comfortable...

Essentially, it just boils down to aesthetics and fit.

Robert Fliri is the original creator of what we now know as Vibram Five Fingers — "toe shoes." More than a quarter of a century ago — in 1999 — Fliri was a student at an Italian design school back. That's when he first came up with the concept of a foot glove for outdoor use, and he specifically wanted to use them in the mountains.

Many years later, a serendipitous meeting took place between Fliri and Marco Bramani. Marco Bramani was the grandson of Vitale Bramani, the founder of Vibram, a rubber sole manufacturer (Vibram is pronounced "vee-brum").

So the legend goes, Bramani believed that "Five Fingers" (So named because the Italian word for "fingers" is the same as that for "toes") might make a novel choice of footwear for use on sailboats or in other activities that required greater ground-feel.

Sadly, Robert Fliri passed away in a tragic accident while in early 2025:

The 48-year-old fell about 300 meters while descending the wall of Punta d'Oberettes, at over 3,400 meters altitude, along with two hiking companions. The latter, not seeing him anymore, raised the alarm shortly before noon. The mountain rescue teams from Malles and the Pelikan 3 helicopter rescue intervened promptly, but unfortunately, they could do nothing but confirm his death. 

Thankfully, sometime in the early 2000s (perhaps 2004?), Bramani brought Fliri into his grandfather's company to develop the world's first toe shoes. The rest is history. There's more to share about Fliri and how he came to design what are now known as Vibram FiveFingers. And for that, we're thankful to Nelleke Don, who interviewed Fliri in 2006 for Body Conscious Design. The interview covers off on the origination of FiveFingers.

Fliri will be remembered as the inventor of toe shoes — Vibram FiveFingers — and his vision is well-captured in the following interview. Find selected quotes and the full interview linked below.

Interview with Robert Fliri (2006)

Robert Fliri: I was in my first year of the design school in Bolzano and one of my professors started a project: sports is fun. It was about sports as leisure, not as a profession or a power-thing. I decided to work on my idea of going barefoot in a protected way and with this professor tried out all kinds of solutions. Instinctively it was clear to me that it had to be a glove. We have five toes: when they can move and grasp the ground independently, and when you can really sense the surface under your feet, your body is able to do what it is designed for by nature. That is a powerful feeling. ...

Was it difficult to develop the five fingers or did you get a lot of support?

There were times that I thought “I quit”, not because of the product as such, but because of the environment I worked in. The concept is totally new and very different from what is usual in the footwear-industry. I had to fight for every step on the road. I had to convince the people I worked with that it had to be a glove and that a glove is not a shoe. Shoe-people think a shoe needs shock absorption, cushioning, support. Innovation means more spacey material, more technology —not a totally different concept. So it was difficult for people to accept. But I was also very fortunate. I had this opportunity to work in the special office of Vibram’s owner, where we have a platform to develop the five-fingers. ...

What distinguishes this five finger’s concept from a normal shoe?

Fliri: The biggest difference is the five toes which make the foot move like in nature and you have much more body-smartness. You can move better, you can feel, you can have more power. With the five-fingers every toe can spread out, can work independently from the others, can grasp the ground, can feel the ground. It is totally different from a shoe where the toes are stuck together, even if the sole of the shoe is very thin and flexible.

It is very joyful to move around on the five-fingers, you will become really happy to move. Your movements will be more flexible, more supple. For example if you walk in the mountains on heavy boots, you will loose around 20% of your energy to the shoes, because of their weight, their stiffness and the impossibility to move your feet. On the five-fingers that doesn’t happen. I have experienced myself you just want to go up and up. When I see a rock or a tree, I want to climb it. It makes you become very playful and energetic. ...

In the first year I was wearing these shoes, old mountaineers said I was crazy, because I was on these flat, low shoes, instead of on high, heavy boots. Among mountaineers, young and old there is one rule: wear high shoes, over the ankle. That is true for normal shoes. With a rigid, hard sole your feet cannot adjust to an uneven surface and you can sprain your ankle. With a thick sole, you are suspended from the ground and whenever there is an unevenness and you go out over the side, you are not warned by your senses in the forefeet. But barefoot, that never happens. Your body is too smart. Whenever you risk loosing your balance, the senses in the forefoot will register it and your muscles will adjust. The sign doesn’t even need to travel all the way up to the brain. Every sense of misbalance will go directly to the muscles and they will adapt themselves. Your body knows perfectly well what is going on — in a way you become more animal-like. ...

Q: Do you think the market is ready for this product?

Maybe not. Because working and thinking with the body is not a common thing yet. But things change. We are now creating five fingers for indoor use, with a thinner sole. And we are also developing aqua-socks fro use in water. People also ask me if we can do them for children. Well, I say, maybe in the future this will be technically possible, but actually I think this product is more suited for adults. As adults we are growing older every day and we become more closed off, even in our movements. Children are playing. They do the same thing in a different way every time. We as adults do the same thing in the same way. I say with this shoe you will be happy on chaotic surfaces, it will inspire you to explore and discover something and play with it. You will receive pleasure by moving, which is a good thing for adults. Children are playing anyway, shoe are no shoe. We are not playing, so it is better for us. At least, that is my opinion.

Fliri's story is one of perseverance against conventional thought regarding footwear. Now that his vision for foot gloves is a reality with countless iterations developed and many more to come, you have to wonder why it took so long for the idea to come to life.

So much of what Fliri says in his answers resonates with me in my experience with FiveFingers and minimalist or "barefoot shoes."

January 2023, I set out to walk 5 million steps in a single year, a that goal took me nearly two years to reach — which I did in September of 2024. I have maintained pace to stay over 5 million ever since by hitting at least 13,700 steps a day.

Reaching that many steps has required discipline, building in daily walking (or running or both) sessions into my life.

All that dedicated movement has made for a solid way to put active miles into testing and reviewing "barefoot shoes," minimalist sandals, etc.

So today, I'm reviewing the Xero Shoes HFS — a.k.a. the "HFS Original" — shoes I got nearly two years ago to the day. I estimate I've put somewhere between one and two thousand miles on the HFS Original at this point. Most of those miles (though not exclusively) were scored a treadmill through a mix of running and walking.

The TL;DR? I really like these shoes. They're lightweight, durably soled, foot-friendly — and they look good too.

My very first pair of Xero Shoes shoes

My HFS Original were gifted to me by Steven Sashen, my friend and the co-founder of Xero Shoes. Believe it or not, the HFS were the first Xero Shoes shoes I ever got. (Thankfully, Jarvis has reviewed several Xero Shoes models, but somehow I just never got to trying them.)

That it took me nearly 10 years to try out Xero Shoes is incredible because Steven and I go way back — back to before Xero Shoes even existed, back to when Steven and Lena's company was "Invisible Shoes." In fact, I still have my first email exchange with Steven from 2010. Back then, Steven was selling DIY huaraches kits — kits that were a 12" sheet of Vibram cherry rubber, some nylon, instructions, and all flat-packed USPS envelope.

Back then, I barely knew Steven, but I quickly learned he was smart, talked fast, and having found FiveFingers didn't fit his feet, he decided to help people make huaraches.

I never could have guessed what would come for the company Lena Phoenix and he were building. Xero Shoes today is a booming company that's sold millions of sandals — and shoes. Congratulations to Steven, Lena, and the team for 15 years of hard work and wild growth that continues to this day.

Xero Shoes HFS Original vs. HFS II

Why is the Xero Shoes HFS "Original"? As mentioned before, the HFS I'm reviewing today are the original version of the shoe. These are not to be confused with the HFS II.

What's going on?

Xero Shoes HFS Original and the Xero Shoes HFS II, while sharing a common name and a mostly similar style have subtle, but meaningful, differences tailored to distinct minimalist shoe preferences.

Here's a quick breakdown of the differences:

• The HFS Original has a 7.5mm stack height with a 5mm outsole. The priority is ground feel. The HFS original's outsole is car tire-inspired tread for road running. It's lighter at 7.9oz (men’s size 9).
• In contrast, the HFS II steps up with a 9mm stack height, incorporating a thin "BareFoam™ layer for extra protection," making it slightly heavier at 8.3oz.

I have not yet tried the HFS II. From what I understand based on some review research, folks say the HFS II is stiffer, which is exactly what you'd expect from the extra foam. My hunch is that over time the HFS II foam "degrades" to be more like the HFS. But I am speculating.

Because people loved the original so much, Xero Shoes "brought back" the HFS and offers it still to this day.

One last note on different models: Xero Shoes says the HFS Original (and II) is more shoe than the Xero Shoes Speedforce (Jarvis reviewed the Speed Force in 2021) and less shoe than the Xero Shoes Prio (Jarvis reviewed the Prio in 2017).

The Xero Shoes HFS Original — What it is

The Xero Shoes HFS Original is a minimalist running shoe built to make you feel close to barefoot while shod. Not surprisingly, Xero Shoes calls the HFS a “true barefoot-inspired experience.”

Claiming a 7.5mm stack height and Xero Shoes' proprietary "FeelTrue®" outsole, the HFS Original gives you a great deal of ground feel in a lightweight package that is not barefoot but is very little shoe. Meanwhile, the HFS Original features a zero-drop design (no heel-to-toe elevation), and the HFS Original has a wide and foot-shaped toe box, giving your toes room to do what they need to do.

The upper is a breathable mesh with synthetic overlays, paired with a moisture-wicking lining for comfort. That outsole is "tire-tread inspired" to offer traction on roads. And like so many Xero Shoes, the HFS Original comes with Xero Shoes' 5,000-mile sole warranty.

The Xero Shoes HFS Original MSRPs at $119.99 (just like the HFS II), and as of right now, are only available in a couple colorways: a light grey/blue (this colorway is the closest to my older pair) and a solid black upper/white sole.

What is the HFS Original when you put it all together?

A very comfortable, lightweight pair of shoes you can wear to do everything from walking to running to lifting weights. They are minimally there, easy to put on, move well with your feet for a shoe (e.g. dorsiflexion no problem moves the front of the shoe up, but bending your toes downward isn't going to bend the sole down.)

How I Used the Xero Shoes HFS Original

I got my Xero Shoes HFS at the very beginning of May 2023. I was already four months into hitting 13.7K steps/day as part of my 5-million-step challenge. The HFS Original quickly became a routine pair for walking.

At the time, I was using a pair of Merrell Vapor Glove 3. The Vapor Glove 3 is a great shoe and very minimal (The 3 is similar to the original Merrell Vapor Glove). Still, within a couple months of owning the HFS Original, the HFS completely displaced the Vapor Gloves and became my go-to shoes for walking — and then running — on the treadmill. (A bit more on the Vapor Gloves later.)

I also went on several neighborhood asphalt runs in the HFS Original.

I did not take the HFS Original out on the trails. I'm sure they could survive my well-trod local trails, but not without a lot of dirt, grime, and potentially snagged mesh. Also, these shoes lack any lugs for trail conditions — potentially a con.

Rough estimate is I have logged about 1,500 miles in the HFS Original, and they look like they could handle several hundred miles more. You be the judge:

Now let’s talk looks. My HFS Original, in gray, black, and white, reminds me of the New Balance Minimus Life, one of my all-time favorite minimalist shoes. No surprise given the similarities to those NBs, the HFS look great to me.

The HFS Original's design fits right in at the gym or out for coffee, and will blend right in with jeans. The mesh upper with synthetic overlays gives it a modern, clean look.

Drawbacks of this lighter colorway. The light-colored mesh wicks sweat away from your foot and (of course) can pick up stains, something I learned when I spilled coffee on them early on. Thankfully, a quick spin in the washing machine on a cold cycle (followed by air drying) brought them back to life. Eighteen months of heavy use had left some sweat and street grime showing, so I finally washed them again in the washing machine.

They cleaned up great.

That Xero Shoes Sole

The HFS Original’s sole is a beast when it comes to durability. After 1,500 miles, mostly on a treadmill, my soles barely show wear.

By comparison, prior to the HFS Original, the Merrell Vapor Glove 3s wore hard from 3–4 months of treadmill walking. Altra Lone Peaks were another pair that often got a rotation on the treadmill and saw its lugs wear down (no surprise).

But the HFS outsole was and is a tank.

There’s a catch though. That durability comes with a rigidity to it, a kind if hardness. The sole isn’t as pliable as softer minimalist shoes like Vibram FiveFingers or the Merrell Vapor Glove 3.

(More on this in the section on ground feel below.)

For treadmill running, the durability of the Xero Shoes sole is a huge plus. In fact, just look how well these outsoles are holding up in the below before/after photos.

Now let's go back to my earlier photos, photos taken yesterday, of the shoes.

Did you "xero" in on that yellow wear patter in my "after" photos above? That yellow spot kind of stood out. I'm talking about this:

I don't know when the yellow started showing through because I only recently noticed it. For the purpose of this review, I pulled the insoles out for a closer look (the insoles are removable by design; I just never had reason to take them out). What I see is that I've worn through the black fabric overlay on my right insole and only a little bit on the left one. On closer inspection — and nearly impossible to see in the photos — the underlying yellow insole foam doesn't look to have degraded all that much, if any. Kind of impressed given that the thickness of this insole is, looking at the math, only about 1.5mm. There are little holes in the sole too that (I suppose) are there to reduce weight and increase airflow.

Anyone got any ideas about my right foot's insole wearing faster than my left?

Let's return now for a moment to that sole I called "rigid." I need to be as clear as I can and this is tricky. The sole is not stiff. Want proof? Here's a short video of me flopping the shoes back and forth:

The HFS Original's outsoles are just kinda hard, ya know? Let's make a totally imperfect analogy.

Imagine you took a piece of poster board paper and laid it down on a table that a pen on it. The poster board will "bridge" from the top of the pen to the surface of the table, arcing between its two points of contact toward the table, bowing under the weight.

Now imagine you took a piece of tissue paper or Kleenex and did the same thing. The Kleenex would likely collapse completely, contorting around the pen's shape.

If you stood on the poster board with the pen under it, you're going to feel that pen's hardness even if you may not be able to identify it as a pen with your foot. But if you step on it through the Kleenex, you very well will know exactly what you're stepping on.

That's sorta what I mean by "rigid" here. The HFS sole is more like a piece of poster board than a Kleenex.

The hardness of the HFS Original outsole is what makes them so durable. That hardness is also why they aren't going to absorb much impact from sharp objects you walk on — even if the soles bridge over those objects.

Make sense? Maybe. Let's talk just a bit more about ground feel.

Ground Feel

Let's start with my highest use-case for the HFS — the treadmill. I don't know if there's a "perfect" shoe for the treadmill. Some I have tried over the last two years:

• Vibram FiveFingers (Classic)
• Altra Lone Peaks
• Merrell Vapor Glove 3
• Shamma Warrior sandals

The HFS Original is the best of these, no question, for its foot-friendly characteristics and its durability.

Perhaps surprisingly, the Altra Lone Peaks are second best (though the lugs do wear down a lot over time). Yes, they are completely different than the Xeroes with their plush 25mm stack height, but on a treadmill this doesn't seem to matter all that much.

For me, wearing Vibrams and Shammas for any longer walks on the treadmill result in hot spots (though both are more minimal than the HFS Original). Vapor Gloves' Vibram rubber outsoles wear out fast, but they perform similarly to the HFS Original on the treadmill.

Okay, Justin, but what about ground feel outside?

If you enjoy feeling the ground beneath you, the HFS Original is going to give you that. That outsole isn't going to pad the surfaces you walk on. On the other hand, a hard outsole means it can't compress as much as a softer outsole. There are softer soles for minimalist shoes that also transmit a lot of ground feel in a different kind of way to the Xero Shoes HFS Original (more like the Kleenex in my analogy. More like a pair of socks). That said, different doesn't necessarily mean less ground feel.

On asphalt, the sole provides little to no shock absorption, so you feel every bit of the hard surface. This is great for forcing you to run lighter and more responsively. But it will be jarring if you’re not used to it — which I wasn't at first. However, if you're like me, you'll adapt quickly — that's the beauty of the feedback.

And all the while as you try and turn your feet over at that treasured 180bpm cadence, the HFS Original's lightweight design becomes all the more appreciated on the road.

In all cases, if you haven't adapted and learned how to walk with less impact (as you might walk when barefoot), there's no better time than the present. Same goes for learning more about minimalist running. My only recommendations are these: Do what you can, and be patient.

(I had given up on running, but maybe I just needed to be more patient.)

One other use-case worth mentioning is weight-training. I used the HFS Original many times for everything from barbell squats and deadlifts to kettlebell swings.

(They tell me I should use weightlifting shoes, but I have yet to cave, for good or bad.)

The Xero Shoes HFS Original has been my go-to treadmill and neighborhood walking and running shoe for the last two years. The durable sole, washable upper, and foot-friendly design is so easy to like, and it will be interesting to shift off them in order to test other shoes.

At $119.99, the HFS Original isn't cheap (what is?). You'll find it at XeroShoes.com. Remember that I did get them for free. I can only speculate here, but based on my long-term use and their continued durability, the price seems okay to me.

Xero Shoes DIY Huaraches Review

Xero Shoes aren't really shoes at all — they're sandals. Mind, they're not just any sandals, they're huaraches. Yes, "huaraches" is just Spanish for "sandals" — that's not the point — huaraches are the "sandal tech" made out of leather and old tires worn by the Tarahumara Indians while traversing miles and miles through the Copper Canyons of Mexico.

As legend has it, the Tarahumaran Manuel Luna taught Barefoot Ted how to make his first pair (circa 2006?), Ted took what he learned home and began sharing how to make huaraches in the U.S., and next thing you know, a few years go by and today you've got numerous flavors of huaraches to choose from, as well as a few new takes on the ancient sandal tying style.

One of the early movers and shakers in the burgeoning huaraches (pronounced wah-rah-chaise ... or at least that's how I try to say it) movement was Steven Sashen, a runner/sprinter, long-time entrepreneur, guru, and ex-comedian. You might know him from his Sh*t Barefoot Runners Say videos. Anyway, a few years back Steven made his first pair of huaraches. As he was running in them, fellow members of the Boulder Barefoot Running Club took note and asked Steven how to make their own.

One thing led to another and it wasn't long before Steven decided to make huaraches on a much larger scale and so Xero Shoes was born. Xero Shoes got its humble beginnings selling DIY kits including a sheet of Vibram rubber and colorful nylon laces. Countless kits later, Xero Shoes decided to bring to market the first ever molded rubber made-for-huaraches sole. And to date, these are still the only huaraches that use their own dedicated sole design (as opposed to cutting soles from flat sheets of rubber).

Today, I'm going to be reviewing the Xero Shoes Connect (4mm thick sole) and Contact (6mm thick sole). I'll be taking an approach that's not so much about running in Xero Shoes and more about wearing them all the time — as an ultra-minimalist sandal. I'll do a comparison of the Connect vs. the Contact, and I'll touch on how the Xero Shoes stack up against competitors.

The basics on huaraches

Huaraches are basically just a sole that is adhered to the bottom of your foot using rope, twine, or string that loops or is tied to the sole in as few places as possible. The most traditional, simplest huaraches design utilizes three points of attachment:

• One between the two biggest toes (like a pair of thongs or flip-flops), and
• One each on either side of the ankle to make for three total points of attachment.

The rope is laced up through the thong, over to the outer ankle hole, down through the sole and back up and around the initial string, around the ankle and down/around the inner ankle hole, and then back up to complete the loop. Mind, this isn't the only way to tie a pair of huarache sandals but it's one of the more popular ways because this method is the "slip on" style tying method. Basically, once tied right, it's a set it and forget it style lacing. This is the primary way I wear all my huaraches (See my review of the Luna Catamount huaraches to see this done without any doubling back of the lace if you're struggling to follow how the lacing works).

Via these three points of attachment, the sole is "stuck on" at the midfoot via the thong, it's balanced from sliding (much) left and right on the foot via the two opposed ankle attachment points, and it's held flat against the heel via the ankle attachment points. The hole set-up functions thanks to tension: you can't really wear a pair of huaraches "loose" (like a flip flop, Chaco's, or pair of Birkenstocks). If a pair of huarache sandals are loosely tied, they're going to fall off your foot.

My one general "gripe" about huaraches is that past the "knot" at the midfoot, the sole is left detached from your foot, which will result in it hanging below your toes when they dorsiflex. Why is that an issue? Well, depending on just how low below your toes the sole hangs, it can snag the ground when walking (or running) and pull under your foot.

I have to layout the above basics on huaraches because really, a pair of huaraches derives all its character from the sole and laces used. Just how well any pair works is going to depend on it's approach to the sole and the laces.

So let's get this review underway already.

Those colorful nylon laces

Xero Shoes all come with the same nylon/polypropylene laces (in different colors). While some other huaraches like Luna Sandals use leather or hemp laces, Xero Shoes utilize nylon/polypropelyne laces. There are a few reasons for this. The stated reasons for this are that they are water-resistant (leather stretches/shrinks when wet), are round rather than edgy leather laces which can irritate your skin (and definitely make knots a little harder to dial-in), don't require break-in, and won't stretch over time. I'll add that they have a lighter weight relative to their strength. What I've noticed is that when I take off my Xero Shoe sandals, the laces tend to maintain their shape as though my foot was still in the sandal. By contrast, the leather, elasticized leather, or webbing ATS laces on my Luna Sandals all "flop" back to the sole as soon as my foot is taken out of the sandal. It's a small thing, but maintaining the structure of the laces sans feet actually makes putting on the Xero Shoes huaraches that much faster/easier.

The other thing is that by not stretching, it's a lot less frustrating trying to "set it and forget it" with the slip-on style tying method. Break-in and dialing in huaraches tying takes patience, and in my experience, I find the laces used by Xero Shoes to make tying a lot less frustrating because they don't break-in or stretch.

As for figuring out the lacing the first time, well, it's a little tricky and you're going to be constantly Googling and watching videos trying to make sure you did it right. The funny thing about that is that outside of the basic lacing concept, there's really no "wrong" way to lace up a pair of huaraches. It's only ever wrong insomuch as your foot isn't well attached to the sole. So be patient with yourself and don't worry about messing it up too much. If you're really concerned, you can opt for the pre-made, pre-cut-to-your-foot-shape Xero Shoes which will be laced already in the slip-on style. More on this later.

As for the dreaded "knot" that rests under your toes, generally, it's not an issue. Because there's a big gap between your toes where this knot is underfoot, things tend to work out where the knot goes unnoticed by your foot. It just ends up pushing up into the gap between your toes. As for wear on the knot, it seems that the knot can hold a good bit of abuse. And in the event it fails, you just pull some more thread through, re-tie, and re-set (using a little flame) and you're golden.

Going in depth on tying huaraches is a bit outside the scope of this review, so I'll end with saying that there are volumes and volumes of tying styles and information on how to do it on the web. Google is your friend!

As for your lace options with Xero Shoes, you get a variety of lace colors to choose from: black, brown, a couple blues, a couple greens, pink, white, and red. Just to keep it straight in this review, my Contact 6mm Xero Shoes feature red laces (one with a "hand" pendant) and my Connect 4mms have black laces, no pendant.

Overall, the laces that Xero Shoes utilizes are incredibly functional and generally go unnoticed by my feet. That's part of the "magic" I guess. The thong between your biggest two toes isn't annoying either. The lace is just so minimal that it basically goes unnoticed. The only issue, if you can call it that, I've seen is that on prolonged use, when I take them off, I'll see a little "groove" where the lace was in contact with my skin. It's not irritated or anything—just a sign that the laces were taut enough to be depressing my skin. No big deal.

The FeelTrue™ Outsole

As I mentioned above, Xero Shoes are the only huaraches available with a huaraches-specific, molded rubber outsole called the "FeelTrue™" outsole. What am I talking about? Basically, every other huaraches (like Luna Sandals) or huaraches-like manufacturer (e.g. Unshoes or Bedrock) simply cuts their soles from flat sheets of rubber. As you might guess, a flat sheet of rubber will translate into a flat huaraches sole. Some of these competitor soles "break-in" over time and assume a more foot-shaped curve, but out the gate they all start flat.

Comparatively, the FeelTrue sole has some curves built into its design. Specifically, it's curved at the arch, rounded up a bit around the heel cup, has little reinforced, pre-punched "wings" at the ankle holes, has a custom tread underneath, a little bit of texture to improve grip on the bare foot, and has a little bit of lift at the toes (What's known as "toe spring" and is common place in most footwear).

All these little huaraches-minded design features go a long, long way to making the Xero Shoes outsole stand out from competitors.

The FeelTrue outsole feels good underfoot. The smooth, yet textured topside of the FeelTrue outsole feels great on my bare foot. Comparatively, as with other huaraches or huaraches-like minimalist sandals, your foot touches a rubber surface that was never really intended to serve as an "insole." It feels a little unrefined to my foot. So Xero Shoes' FeelTrue texture just adds something marked to the feeling of the rubber against my bare skin. It's a nice touch.

The rounded heel, slightly curved arch (non-supportive), and toe spring make the huaraches feel incredibly more "one" with my foot. That little bit of raised edge at the heel makes my heel feel more seated in the sole. Same goes for the arch. The slight toe spring, which collapses readily under any weight, helps lift the front of the huaraches up when your toes aren't pushing on it. This reduces the risk of tripping over that hanging bit of the huaraches sole. I've yet to have a "trip" with my Xero Shoes; comparatively, this was a common occurrence with my old 4mm Vibram Cherry homemade huaraches and happens at least once or twice a day walking around in the 10mm Vibram soles on a pair of Leadville Lunas (review pending).

The FeelTrue outsole is a solid foundation for a complete, finished product. Considering you could make your own huaraches from a kit or from materials you could hunt down locally, if you're going to shell out some cash for a pair of huaraches, it's nice to get a product — something more than raw materials. Don't hear this as coming down on other sandal manufacturers who are using Vibram rubber-cut outsoles. They all are products in their own regard, too. Lunas all have a very "professional" finish to them. Unshoes and Bedrocks take a unique approach to lacing that would be difficult to DIY. It's just that I wish they had soles that felt like they were designed from the get-go to be outsoles for sandals/huaraches. Make sense?

Has anyone taken up Xero Shoes on their warranty? I doubt it given you'd have to be putting a hundred miles a week on a pair for a year to reach 5K miles. It seems like it'd happen eventually though — and really, if you're wearing holes through your huaraches due to high mileage, well, what better way to reward your enjoyment of a product than to keep you shod in it? It's a clever bit of insurance/marketing.

If you can't tell, I'm pretty impressed with the "FeelTrue" outsole you get with the Xero Shoes huaraches. Now, the big question is: which thickness do you go for? There's the "Connect," which is 4mm thick, or you can opt for the "Contact," which is 6mm thick. While the only difference between the two is a mere 2mm of rubber thickness, that's a 50% increase in thickness from 4mm to 6mm, and in my testing, makes for a pretty substantial difference in terms of function and barefoot feel.

The 6mm Contact

The Xero Shoes website rightly points out that the 6mm thick Contact outsole provides a bit more protection than the 4mm thick Connect. The benefit of that extra 2mm goes beyond protection — it also adds some rigidity to the outsole, helping the Contact maintain its structure as your foot bends and flexes.

A little extra structure in the sole of the Contact means that it flexes and bends a little less between the thong-point and the ankle point. For me, this actually means that I notice the soles a little less because they stay stuck on my foot no matter what.

The downside of the extra 2mm of thickness in the Contact is that you lose a bit of ground feel. Just how much is hard to say, but overall, the ground feel of the Contact is excellent. It's probably only slightly less than a pair of Classic or Sprint FiveFingers. That means you're going to feel textures of the surfaces you walk on and gravel is going to "poke" your foot (a.k.a. the free foot massage).

The 4mm Connect

Reduce the sole thickness of the Contact by 2mm — 33% — and you get the 4mm thick Connect. The Connect is billed as being the closest thing to barefoot but with protection.

Basically, the Connect gives you the most ground feel. How much ground feel? Well, it's going to be similar to other 4mm rubber outsole shoes — like the Classic or Sprint FiveFingers. That means that a misplaced step on a stone (or Lego) is going to be impossible to miss. Textures shine through the rubber sole (walking on grass vs. concrete vs. a rug). The Connects definitely keep you grounded.

The only drawback to the Connect's thinner sole is that it has less overall structure. So it's more likely to flex throughout the sole either past the thong point (where the toe spring provides some help) or between the thong hole and the ankle holes.

Contact vs. Connect

How are you to decide between the 4mm Connect and 6mm Contact? For one, the extra 2mm of thickness of the Contact is going to set you back a little more in terms of cost — about $5. Apart from price, the question you have to ask yourself is:

• Do I want more ground feel?
• Do I want more structure?

If you want more ground feel and don't mind a little floppiness, then the Connect is the way to go. If you don't mind losing a little ground feel in exchange for a sole that feels a little more solid, then you have to go Contact.

You can get a sense for how rigid the Connect is compared to the Contact by looking at the photo on the right, which shows how the Connect "hangs" lower than the Contact. Remember that with huaraches, they function thanks to the tension between the sole and the foot, as held together via the lacing system at three points. It seems that some rigidity in the sole helps this whole creation work. This is because having only three touch points on the sole mean that the parts of the sole that aren't attached to your foot (which is most of the sole) is only going to stay "stuck" on your foot insomuch as there's structure within the sole itself. Just think of the difference between a piece of paper and a piece of cardboard. If you rest a piece of paper on one finger, it will drape down around your finger. By comparison, a piece of cardboard won't drape in this same scenario. In a way, you can see this happening when you look at this photo of the Connect resting on a pedestal and contrast it against the Contact on the same pedestal. See what I mean?

That's sorta why rigidity of the sole matters with huaraches. To the extent the soles lack rigidity, they're going to adhere less to your foot. For me, this is the most important decision between the Connect and the Contact — sole rigidity.

Here's another way to look at sole rigidity. Below is how the Contact (red laces) and Connect (black laces) look with toes flexed up and down. You'll note both the increased flexibility of the Connect and the slightly more sturdy toe spring of the Contact.

So while I don't get quite as much ground feel, I prefer the Contact. Take a look at the photo on the below of the 4mm Connects and notice how the sole creates a wave as I flex my toes. In small ways, this happens enough to be distracting with the Connect soles that I just prefer the solid experience of the Contact. Thankfully, I find the Contact's still have incredible ground feel but adhere better to my foot.

So between the two, I'd go for the Contact over the Connect.

Mind that if you have a shorter foot (mine is a shade under 11" long), I think you'll have better (and better) experiences with the thinner's 4mm Connect's sole rigidity. This has to do with physics (loads and levers). I'll save more discussion on that here (questions, hit me in the comments).

Casual Summer Sandals/Huaraches

Aside RE: running in huaraches. Books could be written about running in huaraches. It comes down to getting the lacing down right so that the sole sticks close to your foot, doesn't slap the ground, and doesn't slide laterally (left to right). I'm not going to review the Connect or Contact Xero Shoes as running sandals here. Suffice to say you can run in them and if you're willing to ascend the huaraches running curve, Xero Shoes are hard to beat — they're low cost huaraches made from quality materials.

What I am going to talk about is how the Xero Shoes function as everyday sandals. I won't mince words or drag this out any longer than necessary — Xero Shoes huaraches great minimalist, casual sandals. They're good worn with shorts or jeans for knocking around town, hitting up the park, neighborhood walks, kicking back on the beach or at the pool — they're like flip-flops sans the gait-altering-toe-clinch-heel-drag-motion thanks to the heel of the outsole being saddled right up against your foot when you walk.

Aesthetically, Xero Shoes are so hardly there that when you wear them with a pair of jeans, all you see is a thin rope and the sole. Pictures tell that tale below. I think the aesthetic hurdle you'll have to get over — and I'm speaking mainly to the men here — is that the overall design of a huaraches sandal is reminiscent of popular women's sandals. That said, personally, I think they're such minimal sandals that your foot is the real aesthetic star here. If you've got strong looking feet — and why wouldn't you — well, they're going to get a chance to shine when you wear a pair of huaraches.

For me, I tend to wear mine with shorts or jeans. I also used them as beach sandals with great success.

In the event that your IS sandals get funky or dirty, hose them off. They're very easy to clean simply because there's not much to clean. And while I didn't run this by Steven, I'd almost bet you could throw them in your dishwasher to clean them.

If you grab a pair of the black nylon laces for your Xero Shoes, you can even get away with wearing them with a pair of khakis to "dress it up." Sandals are always going to be casual, but the black laces lend a more sophisticated look to the Xero Shoes.

Conclusion and Best Bet

What's left to say about these? I wasn't really into the original DIY Xero Shoes. It wasn't really their fault — I just didn't get into the Vibram Cherry, home-cut look of them and I probably didn't give them enough of a chance to shine. That said, I knew when I saw the FeelTrue soles almost a year ago that these were now something unique that I had to try.

I have not been disappointed. While the Connects are just a little too flexible for my taste, I routinely slip on my Contacts for any number of reasons. I even did yard work in them recently and it was great because cleaning them off was such a breeze. What I really love about the Xero Shoes huaraches is the value proposition: you get a made-for-huaraches, top-notch outsole and laces that just flat out work at an affordable price. It is incredible that you can get a DIY kit for $20-25 that comes with such a good sole — mind the Vibram cherry kits are still available and cost you basically the same amount of money. So for the money, if you're wanting to dabble with huaraches, you really can't go wrong starting out with a pair of Xero Shoes.
