Paralegal pay continues to rise for both law firms and law departments, according to the 2012 Annual Compensation Survey for Paralegals/Legal Assistants and Managers released today.

The survey has been conducted annually since 2002 by ALM Legal Intelligence, a leading source of business intelligence for the legal profession, in partnership with the International Paralegal Management Association (IPMA).

The survey tracks compensation, billing rates and billable hours for paralegals, based on responses from 274 law firms and law departments representing more than 8,775 paralegal positions.

Key findings from the survey included the following:

The number of organizations granting salary increases increased from 2011.

The top 2 highest paid (hourly) positions in 2012 are Litigation Support/Technology Manager ($77.72) and Paralegal Director ($67.73) on the law firm side, and Paralegal Manager ($59.05) on the law department side.

Case Manager and Litigation Support/Technology Manager saw the biggest increases on the firm side; Paralegal and Paralegal Managers saw big increases on the law department side.

Law firm paralegal average billing rates increased or remainedrelatively the same in 2012 with rates ranging from $134 an hour for a Case Assistant up to $299 for the Specialist/Industry Analyst position.

I am curious if law firms of all sizes were surveyed or if the results are only from larger firms that hire paralegal managers. The results of this survey do not coincide with what I am hearing from paralegals across the country who report their salaries remain stagnant with perhaps only slim increases.

1. What prompted you to choose a paralegal career? My legal career started over 19 years ago when I started back to school to become a court reporter. I was going to school part time and working full time as a runner at another law firm in Tulsa.

When I realized just how much I enjoyed working in a law firm, I started making bold changes to get to where I am today. With education, hard work and dedication I went from runner, to legal assistant to ultimately paralegal.

2. What is your favorite part of your job? My favorite part of the job is when a case goes to trial, whether it is a mock trial or the “real” deal. I guess you could say that I am an “adrenaline junkie” and love the fast pace of trial!

I am truly blessed to work with such fine attorneys that respect my input that goes into every aspect of trial, from preparing witnesses and selecting jurors, to assisting with the development of a trial “game plan”, to ultimately observing and reporting jurors’ reactions during the course of trial.

3. What professional associations do you belong to? I am active with NALS…the association of legal professionals, serving in leadership roles in both the national and state level. I also belong to the Tulsa County Bar Association Paralegal Section and currently serve as Vice-Chair of the section. I am also active in Tulsa Area Paralegal Association.

4. How has your membership benefited you? NALS is an exceptional organization and has benefited me tremendously. From education to leadership to networking, belonging to a great organization such as NALS has given me the tools and resources to take my career to the next level.

I would highly recommend to anyone that does not belong to a legal professional organization to consider joining and getting involved in one. The opportunities that a great organization can provide are almost limitless.

5. What has been the highlight of your career? That is kind of a hard question, as I have many different highlights of my career. One highlight that comes to mind was the first time I was asked to present a seminar to a group of my peers. From that moment on I was hooked. Since 2005, I have presented numerous seminars and webinars at the local and national level and love getting up to speak before an audience.

I guess my biggest highlight was when I published my first article in a national paralegal magazine. It was concerning the little known area of vaccine litigation and the paralegal’s role. Since that time I have gone on to have additional articles published concerning various topics of the paralegal industry.

6. What electronic device can you not live without? My smartphone! I just recently switched from an Android based device to an iPhone and absolutely love it. I own an iPad and iPod as well, as it is great being able to sync all my devices at the same time from one device. It is especially helpful when making appointments and having my Outlook work calendar, iPad and iPhone calendars all be linked together.

7. Speaking of your iPod, anything on it that has you hitting the repeat button? I love the song “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson. My favorite lyric is, “What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger, stand a little taller…” It’s a great song about surviving the trials and tribulations of life and standing strong and weathering those storms.

8. If someone contemplating a paralegal career asked you for career advice, what would your answer be? Like the old Nike commercial, Just do it! With the current state of the economy, I believe that we will see the legal industry become more and more cost conscious. I believe firms and corporations will continue and expand the utilization of paralegals for tasks that once were completed by an attorney in order to cut costs to their clients, thereby creating a demand for qualified paralegals.

9. You've enjoyed a successful paralegal career. To what single event or person do you attribute that success? There are so many events and people in my life that have shaped and influenced me that I cannot list one single event or person. I truly owe all my success to my family and friends that have supported me over the years and have encouraged me to take my career to the next level and continue to do so.

10. What is the most important step a paralegal can take to keep his or her career interesting? Learn something new! I am big fan of education. I recommend that if there is an area of law or subject matter that you don’t work in on a daily basis, take a course at your local community college or attend seminars and webinars on that subject. Learning is a forever thing and you are never too old to learn something new.

11. What sports team are you passionate about? I love college football and am a huge University of Florida Gators fan! Go Gators!

12. Have you dipped your toes in the social media waters? It's more like I dove head first into the social media waters! I use Facebook on a professional versus personal basis and am active on LinkedIn and Twitter. I believe that Twitter is a great branding tool to market yourself to other professionals across the world. It is also a great way to network with other like-minded individuals.

13. Is there a quote that inspires you? Some time ago I attended a NALS National Education Conference where the keynote speaker, Erick Burton, said "There is no word 'try'; commit to it or don't."

It reminded me of a quote from the movie 'The Empire Strikes Back". The character, Luke, did not believe that the Force could lift a massive object. He told his instructor, Yoda, that he'd try. Yoda replied "Do...or do not. There is no try." This has become my mantra when approaching any obstacle in life.

10 Wardrobe Must-Haves For Men

1. Tailored Suit Everyone needs at least one suit that fits them perfectly. One that will fit any occasion. Im not talking bespoke (unless you can afford it and once in your life you need to do this), but please, get your suit tailored. Suggest a solid navy suit.

2. At least 2 Freshly Pressed White Shirts They can be any collar, cuff or shade but a white shirt is a blank canvas with endless style opportunities. Please, no frayed cuffs or necks here go buy a new one.

3. Comfortable, dress shoes Having a pair of well polished, dress shoes that do not make your feet cringe is crucial. Buy the best pair you can afford youll be glad you did. Black is best, cordovan should be next on your list.

4. Blazer/Sport Coat For those days where you dont feel like thinking about what to wear and still look professional. Traditional navy or black is ideal since theyll work with everything from your dress pants to your jeans.

5. High quality briefcase/laptop bag in good repair Its a man's version of a purse and your old school backpack just doesn't cut it in the adult world. It should reflect both your professionalism and your personal sense of style.

6. Sweater A comfortable, well-fitting sweater is as versatile and can substitute for your tailored blazer/sport coat in more business casual settings. Again, think classic colors and styling.

7. Gray dress pants They go with everything (see Blazer/Sport coat, white shirt, etc.). Seriously. Medium to dark grey is your best choice cuffed or not doesnt matter.

8. High Quality Leather Belt Black, cordovan and dark brown. It needs to fit properly and should be classic, clean and well made.

9. A Silk Tie It needs to be clean, and should not be overly fashionable. Again, look to the traditional classics like the regimental stripe or rep ties. High quality shows as does one pulled from the clearance bin at Bennys Bargain Basement. This is also someplace where you can add your personal fashion statement once you can afford to have several ties hanging in your closet.

10. A Watch The field is wide open here its functional and can pretty much be any style you want. I might suggest steering clear of canvas watchbands for work but its not an absolute by any stretch.

Paralegal Profile: Nancy L. Merritt

Nancy L. Merritt is a paralegal who has spent her entire career working in the Delaware Valley. This year (2012) marks her 25th year in the paralegal field, and her 18th year with her current firm, Archer & Greiner, P.C., in Haddonfield, New Jersey.

Nancy has worked in just about every area of the law: matrimonial, real estate, environmental, labor, personal injury, estates, litigation. Her focus now is on commercial litigation and a growing/relatively new field for paralegals: governmental affairs.

1. What prompted you to choose a paralegal career? I was working as a legal secretary. The attornes asked me to consider becoming a paralegal. That was 27 years ago (ugh).

2. What professional associations do you belong to? The Philadelphia Association of Paralegals. I am a past Board member and current voting member.

3. How has your membership benefited you? Networking. There is tremendous benefit to gathering regularly with members of your field.

4. What has been the highlight of your career? I was blessed to work for many years with a partner, now a Federal Magistrate Judge, who took full advantage of my paralegal skills and capabilities. He valued paralegals and worked in a true team fashion with me.

I gained invaluable insight from him and honed my already-sharpened paralegal skills. His cases were ultra challenging (mass tort, class actions), and I joined him on several trials. Who would have thought, looking back, I would miss all that stress and the countless hours in the office? But I do.

5. What do you see as hot trends in the paralegal industry? E-discovery and the challenges technology has brought to the simplest of litigation cases. Every litigation paralegal should keep abreast of e-discovery/technology trends.

6. If someone contemplating a paralegal career asked you for career advice, what would your answer be? First, be very sure of your career choice. You need to be in for a penny, in for a pound to be an effective paralegal. Second, seriously consider the up side and down side of working as a paralegal. If you are looking for fixed hours and overtime pay, this career may not be for you.

7. You've enjoyed a successful paralegal career. To what single event or person do you attribute that success? First, to myself because I have worked hard and never let my skills and abilities soften. Second, to everyone I have worked with throughout my paralegal career, because you grow as a paralegal with each attorney you work for and with each new case you handle.

8. What is the most important step a paralegal can take to keep his or her career interesting? Continuing legal education, particularly in areas of the law that are not familiar to you. And to step outside of your comfort zone and take on work (cases, areas of the law) that is new to you. It keeps you on your toes and increases your value as a paralegal.

9. Who would play you in a movie of your life? Hmmmm. Joan of Arc or Wonder Woman? To be serious, the real value in my life is being a mother. Any strong and loving role model in the field of motherhood would be OK with me.

10. What electronic device can you not live without? I can live without them all! (Okay, my phone.)

11. What is your favorite hobby? Traveling, particularly when our trips take our family to new and exciting places.

12. What Web site do you visit daily? Most all my daily website visits are work related. I try to stay off the computer when I leave the office!

13. Where do you go to have fun? Nature. With my family and our dog. It’s our great escape.

Bonus Question: What is your guilty pleasure food? It would have to be sugar; I can’t seem to live without it.

Paralegal Salaries: What's Really in Your Wallet?

Would you pass up a raise? I'm sure the answer is 'No!' If you aren't taking advantage of benefits offered by your employer, though, you may be passing up a big pay hike.

Why should you be interested in those benefits? Some will result in a tax savings to you. Others will have a positive impact on your future, including your ability to transfer to a different practice area or department (which could result in an increase in salary) and the funds you will have on hand when you retire. Some will improve your quality of life. Here are a few possibilities you'll want to check for:

Health Insurance. This is a number one priority. Be sure to enroll your first day on the job.

401(k) Plan. If your employer offers a 401(k) plan, be sure to enroll and make regular contributions, regardless of your employer's contributions. There are tax benefits. For many of us, these funds and our Social Security benefits will be our only retirement income. The Department of Labor requires that if an employer has a 401(k) Plan, it must be offered to you once you qualify for it. Don't let your employer 'forget' to offer it to you.

Section 125 Plan. A Section 125 plan provides tax savings by reducing employee medical premiums from gross salary prior to calculation of federal income and Social Security taxes. This is one I take full advantage of. It's difficult to predict your total expenses for the coming year (and you are stuck with your prediction, even if you didn't calculate having to have a root canal!) but it's still worth doing.

Paid Time Off. Many employers have a 'use it or lose it' policy. Don't give up that time! Even if you don't lose it, do use your vacation and personal days (whatever it's called where you work) because the break will do wonders for your attitude and mental health.

College Tuition. This is another gimme. Don't delay! Never pass up an opportunity to improve your skills and increase your knowledge. If you can get tuition reimbursement, be sure to go for that degree. Having it may mean you'll be able to advance within the firm or the company. It may mean that you can get a better job with a higher salary somewhere else. Without it, you may be stuck where you are forever. And don't tell me it's too late to start your higher education adventure. The years will pass whether you do it or not.

Certifications. Passing a certification examination doesn't always result in a higher salary, but it never hurts to have it. In some cases, you absolutely cannot advance without it. The certification will demonstrate your discipline, your level of knowledge, your professionalism, and your credibility. There are other certifications besides those just for paralegal, such as the CPCU (Certified Property Casualty Underwriter) and CRM (Certified Risk Manager).

Professional Association Memberships. Even if you don't anticipate being an 'active' member (and I do encourage you to take that route), this is a great way to stay on top of what's happening in your profession. You'll have networking opportunities, as well as opportunities for continuing education.

Continuing Education. Again, never pass up a chance to upgrade your skills and expand your knowledge. Perhaps a course isn't exactly in line with what you do, but you never know where your life will take you and what you'll be working on down the road. You may work in bankruptcy right now, but IP may be in your future.

Publications and Books. Will your employer pay for subscriptions to professional journals? How about books for your practice area?

Notary Public Commission. This is another 'no brainer.' You probably need this in your present employment and it 'travels' with you if you move on.

Gym Membership. Healthy employees are happier and more productive. You can find time in your day to get in some exercise...especially if your employer is paying for the gym membership.
Equipment: Will your employer pay for your cell phone plan? A Smart Phone? An iPad? A laptop? Don't pass those up!

Your challenge: Know your benefits package inside and out. Sit down with the person in charge of benefits where you work and make sure you understand everything that's available to you. Find out what steps you have to take for each one, how you enroll, get approval, get reimbursed, etc.

If you're taking college courses or attending continuing education programs, be sure to provide a report for your personnel file and keep a copy so that you will have the information for your next salary review. Your benefits can add up to more dollars in your pocket. You don't want to miss out on that!

1.   What prompted you to choose a paralegal career? After being a legal secretary for 12 years, I evolved into doing “JD’s (aka “can you ‘Just do’ . . .?”). Yet, it didn’t feel right.
I went back to school and obtained my Certificate of Completion from a local ABA approved paralegal program. When I finished the program, I couldn’t find a job so I took a position for a $1,000+ a month more as a Legal Secretary with a paralegal certificate! Luckily, within 6 months I was promoted, and the rest is history.

2.   What is your favorite part of your job? As a freelance paralegal for the past 14 years, I have had the privilege of working on all kinds of projects, for all types of cases, in various areas of law. It allowed me to be more flexible with my time as a mom and yet work with a variety of attorneys in So CA and have a fulfilling career.

3.   What professional associations do you belong to? Paralegal Associations: California Alliance of Paralegal Association, SPA, and NALA. Bar Associations: Newport Harbor Bar Association, Lex Romana Bar Association, OCTLA, Celtic Bar Association, West Orange County Bar Association, OC Criminal Defense Bar Association; promoting California’s Business & Professions Code §6450, et seq. and recruiting speakers for MCLE programs.

4.   What has been the highlight of your career? Working on my first federal felony case from inception through trial, being on the trial team and sitting with the attorney in trial, and handling all the exhibits, for a several week trial. Then, finishing up by assisting the attorney through the sentencing phase. I’m ready to do it again. Second, mentoring students.

5.   What do you see as hot trends in the paralegal industry? The technology that makes my job easier. I appreciate it when software products cuts down on my ‘busy work’ time, so I can spend it on the important aspects of the project. Also seeing the new options and/or opportunities for paralegals (i.e., teaching. When I went to school, only attorneys taught our courses.)

6.   If someone contemplating a paralegal career asked you for career advice, what would your answer be? Find the ‘arena’ in which you want to work in, (i.e., law firm, solo, or corporate, etc.). Do short internships or work temp jobs while in school. Take on anything that will get you in the door. Secondly, be a sponge and open minded, and make sure you are learning something new every day. Finally, you don’t have to know the answer to everything, you just have to know where or how to find it.

7.   You’ve enjoyed a successful paralegal career. To what single event or person do you attribute that success? For me there were several attorneys who mentored me and took me under their wings, who taught me and worked with me; while others allowed me to take on projects I wouldn’t otherwise have been assigned; and finally, attorneys who gave me the confidence to do more than I could, which resulted in work-product exceeding even their expectations. Never be afraid to ask questions.

8.   What is the best live concert you’ve ever attended? Fleetwood Mac Rumors; Recently, Celine Dion in Vegas and Paul McCartney, Honda Center, OC, CA.

9.   What’s your favorite food? I love to cook so this is hard, yet anything with bold or spicy flavors, my friends’ cooking (they are great cooks too). My rule is eat something out you don’t cook better at home.

10.   What’s your favorite vacation getaway? Lake Havasu, AZ in less than 4 hours I’m in a completely different state, awesome scenery, and renewed state of mind.

10 Travel Tips: Be Prepared When Things Go Wrong

It's the season when you'll be traveling on vacation, for work and for professional association meetings. Hopefully all will go well -- for me and for you -- but, just in case, I have 10 tips that will help you be better prepared if anything goes wrong:

1. Be sure your name on your ticket and your ID match. TSA is now strictly enforcing the requirement that the name on your ID (your driver's license or passport) must exactly match the name on your ticket. For instance, 'Vicki Voisin' on my ticket will not work because that's not the full name on my driver's license. I learned this the hard way!

Your ticket will have to be reissued with the correct name and usually for a later flight. In addition, you will have to pay all the fees involved. When you buy tickets, always be sure the ticket is issued to match your ID.
Another tip: When you renew your driver's license, get a separate photo ID card (the cost is $10 in my state). Keep it in a different place from your driver's license when you travel so you have a backup ID in case you lose your license. You'll be able to get through security to fly home if you lose your wallet on the road.

2. Carry with you the toll-f'ree numbers of all the airlines you fly. If a flight is cancelled or you realize you won't make a connecting flight, make a call from your cell phone to the airline instead of standing in line behind all the irate passengers. You will usually be rebooked immediately.
More numbers to have with you:

passport,
frequent flyer,
hotel frequent guest and rental car numbers

These should be printed on one sheet of paper with a color copy of your passport key pages on the other side of the page. Hide them inside every bag you carry.

Send a copy to yourself on your Google account and never delete it. This gives you access to your documents from any computer in the world.

3. Be patient. The people at the desk are doing the best they can. They are more willing to help you if you remain upbeat, calm and cheerful. Think how you would want to be treated if you were in their shoes. The delay is certainly not their fault.

4. Ask for anything you can get. This includes f'ree meals, hotel rooms, ground transportation, and upgraded seats. You may get them...or you may not. For sure you won't if you don't ask.
5. Take names. If someone makes a promise to you (such as there is a room available at the hotel or you can return the rental call late without penalty) be sure to get the person's name.

6. Keep your daily planner with you at all times. You will need to make notes of new flights and also cancel or reschedule any appointments on your calendar. This is where you can make notes of the person making promises as above.
7. Never check luggage if you don't have to. When you have your bag with you, it will be easier to change planes (and even airlines) at the last minute. (In the interest of honesty, I have NEVER been able to travel without checking a bag!)
8. Keep necessities with you. Never put anything in checked luggage that you absolutely must have at your destination, such as medicines and personal essentials. Those go in your carry on and are kept with you at all times. I always pack a change of undies, something to sleep in, and a fresh shirt in my carry on.
9. Keep your cell phone and laptop with you. Recharge them whenever you have an opportunity because you can never be sure when you'll find your next working electrical outlet. Also keep all electronics (including flash drives, external hard drive, chargers, and camera) with you, as well as materials for any presentations you will be making.
10. Take some nice-to-have extras in your carry on. Never leave home without something to occupy your time if you're delayed. A book, magazine, needlework, iPod, iPad, crossword puzzle...anything to make the time go faster. It's also a good idea to pack some granola bars or trail mix in case you get caught with no time for a meal.

1. What prompted you to choose a paralegal career? I had been a mom and housewife for 13 years. While going through a divorce I realized I had to have a career where I could support my two kids.

2.    What is your favorite part of your job? I love the fact that no two days are ever the same. And I love “putting out fires.”

3.    What professional associations do you belong to? NALA, State Bar of Texas and Houston Metropolitan Paralegal Association, where I am currently serving as President.

4.    How has your membership benefited you? I have grown professionally so much since joining HMPA, serving on committees and the Board of Directors. I never would have thought I could accomplish the things I have while serving on HMPA's BOD.

5.    What has been the highlight of your career? Landing my job in April. I have come so far in such a short time!

6.    What do you see as hot trends in the paralegal industry? E-discovery for sure, also I see eventually we will start to become more of a paperless industry.

7.    If someone contemplating a paralegal career asked you for career advice, what would your answer be? Get into an approved paralegal program and join your local association and volunteer. It is easier to get a job through word of mouth than through a want ad.

8.    Is there a quote that inspires you? I get a lot of wisdom from Dolly Parton. She always has something interesting and clever to say. My favorite quote of hers is “A peacock who sits on its tail feathers is just another turkey”

9.     You've enjoyed a successful paralegal career. To what single event or person do you attribute that success? I would have to say Andy Mihalick. He is an attorney at my first law firm. He mentored me and taught me a lot of the things you don’t learn in school. He also helped me get the experience I needed to succeed in my career. While at that law firm, we were affectionately known as “The Dream Team.”

10.    What is the most important step a paralegal can take to keep his or her career interesting? Never stop learning, go to CLE’s, Join your local association and get involved, you will get so much more out of it than you put into it; and last but not least, volunteer with your local bar association events like will-a-thons - - you never know, you may meet that key person who will help you to take the next step in your career.

11. What is your favorite kind of music? My iPod suffers from identity crisis. When I shuffle you may hear Amy Grant then AC/DC and then David Allen Coe then the Fresh Prince.
12. What electronic device can you not live without? There are actually three: my phone, my iPod and my ebook

13. If you could not be a paralegal, what would be your dream job? I’m not sure about a “paying” dream job, but sometime in my life when I actually have the time – perhaps when I retire, I plan to become a Child Advocate.

Bonus Question: What is the strangest thing you ever ate? I didn’t actually eat it…but in 1992 I went to Belize (before it was a tourist destination). We stayed at what they call a “bed and breakfast” but what we would call a shack. The morning after we arrived, the lady of the house was busy cooking a fried egg for our breakfast. When we came into the kitchen to eat, we looked down at the floor and saw two iguanas tied up that their son had caught that very morning. They were to be lunch that day…so it was a good thing we were leaving after breakfast!

1. Why did you choose a paralegal career? I have always been fascinated with a career in law. I wanted to become a lawyer, but there was a different plan for me that involved marriage and children. After some time, though, I decided to find my way back to my passion and becoming a paralegal was a suitable fit given my circumstances.

2. What is your favorite part of your job? Being able to take a task which may seem “undoable” given the deadline and getting it done on/before the deadline.

4.    What has been the highlight of your career? There have been so many opportunities afforded to me as a result of my professional associations and memberships, it’s difficult to specifically point to one specific highlight.

I truly enjoyed the opportunity to be an Adjunct Instructor at Kaplan College and working with paralegal students and helping them more fully understand what it takes to be a paralegal. The other important event that has significance to me is the recent publishing of my article, “The Many Faces of Paralegal Students” in the August/September 2011 National Paralegal Reporter.

5.    What do you see as hot trends in the paralegal industry? Continuing evolution of eDiscovery, including certifications for eDiscovery; paralegal licensure/certification; how the economy is affecting career opportunities for paralegals; but, also, creating a new category of job “competitor”: first and second year associates (hence, the recently coined term, “JD Paralegal”).

6.    If someone contemplating a paralegal career asked you for career advice, what would your answer be? Within the parameters of the current economy, paralegal opportunities are not as plentiful as they once were and employers have the ability to be far more selective regarding candidates; thus, it is up to you to invest in yourself and your career to educate yourself about the legal field and the paralegal profession and continue that learning process throughout your entire career. You should want to invest in yourself and your career; the moment it becomes a chore, it is time to find a new opportunity.

7.     You've enjoyed a successful paralegal career. To what single event or person do you attribute that success? I attribute my success to my family as they supported my choice to change my career and go to school to and become a paralegal. They have been patient and understanding when the work requires long hours; and helpful when I have come home appearing stressed and weary.   They’re also understanding about the time I put into my extra-curricular paralegal activities. I am blessed to have a family that believes in me and supports my success.

8.    What is the most important step a paralegal can take to keep his or her career interesting? A commitment to continued investment in one’s legal practice as well as other areas of interest by attending CLEs, subscribing to listservs, utilization of social networking, and scheduling “face time” with others in their area of expertise as well as other areas of the law which interest him/her.

9. What electronic device can you not live without? My LG Touch cellphone (which I hope to upgrade to a “true” Smartphone very soon).

10. What is the one thing you wish you were better at? Delegating.

11. What three items would you want if you were stranded on a deserted island? My cellphone, my MP3 player, and a book.

12. What Web site do you visit daily? There isn’t just one specific website that I reference daily; I keep the following websites open each day: LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and Hotmail. I visit the Paralegal Mentor, Practical Paralegalism and ParalegalGateway in addition to other legal and paralegal websites each day.
13. You've been given the chance to have dinner with anyone living or dead. Who is it? This is tough. With all the choices I could think of, I pared my list down to these three: John Lennon, Sandra Day O’Connor, and Martin Luther King.

What was your first car? A 1977 Chevy Vega (bright orange with beige interior). I loved that car!

The riskiest thing I ever did was... Taking my 1977 Chevy Vega four-wheeling; having to have it towed because it was stuck; then providing my mom’s credit card number for the tow bill (without telling my mom in advance [there was some explaining to do when the credit card bill arrived]).

Your Paralegal Career: 6 Simple Steps to Stay on Top of Your Game

Has this happened to you? You wake up one day and realize you're no longer the youngest kid on the block.

You've worked as a paralegal for a decade or more.
You're feeling a bit stale.
You wonder if you've made the right career choice.
You consider your options and see only limitations.
You don't feel quite at the top of your game.

It's time to change your mindset! Staying on top of your game requires some work...and I don't mean the kind of work that keeps you behind your desk from 9:00 to 5:00 (or later) every day. I'm talking about the work you must do to keep you and your mind fresh and energized.

Here are some simple steps you can take to do just that:

1. Make yourself available to those who may be newer to the career field. If you've been in the profession for a while, you should welcome, encourage, mentor and praise those who are coming after you.

They will look to you for advice and direction. Be there for them. They are the future but guidance from those with history is crucial. Kristina Duncan and Melissa Highnote, CP joined me for this picture at the NALS Conference in Cincinnati. It's great to know that the future of this profession is in such capable hands!

2. Never say, 'I can't.' There's absolutely nothing you can't do once you put your mind to it. When you're offered a challenge at work, tackle it with gusto. Ask for help and guidance if you need to. Learn everything that will help you in meeting the challenge. Dig in and work hard.

Repeat the mantra of The Little Engine That Could: "I think I can, I think I can, I think I can." Then change that to "I KNOW I can!" You WILL reach the top of the mountain...success is waiting on the other side.

3. Never stop learning. Always embrace change and stay in the know! People who are always learning something new are not only more interesting, but also happier in general. There's always something fresh and exciting going on: new rules, case law, and procedures, as well as new books, courses, technology, and vocabulary. Make a deal with yourself to learn something new every day to keep your motivation in high gear.

4. Credentials do matter. Credentials say a lot about you: your depth of knowledge, credibility, determination, diligence, and more. Don't kid yourself...if you're in competition for a job with a person who has the same amount of education and work experience, your credentials will give you the leg up you'll need.

Be sure to pursue all of the credentialing you can...then be sure to toot your horn. Let people know you have those credentials and how hard you worked for them. Also, put the designation on your business cards and firm letterhead. If you're curious about the authority to do that, see Peel v Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Committee of Illinois, 110 S.Ct. 2281 (1990).

5. Join an association...local, state and/or national. My mother always said, "Birds of a feather flock together." This is certainly the case with professional associations.

An association will provide you with continuing education opportunities, as well as connections that will enhance your career. You will make lifelong friends that you can count on for assistance when you need contacts or information from their neck of the woods. This will happen more often than you might think.

6. If joining is good, being a contributing, hard-working member is even better. Just carrying your membership card isn't enough. You'll reap the benefits of belonging to an association when you jump in with both feet, get really involved, and take on responsibilities: write articles, speak at seminars, plan a retreat....be generous with your time, your ideas and your enthusiasm. When you do this, you'll find your voice, you'll make a difference in the profession, and you'll be more 'professional.'

Your challenge: Think about the steps you can take to stay on top of your game. Go new places, nurture your friendships, accept challenges, embrace goals. Never stop until you're at the top of the mountain...I know you'll like what you find on the other side.

1. You're a true paralegal entrepreneur. Tell us about your work. I am the CEO/Paralegal Extraordinaire (Really...it's printed on my business cards!) at Starr Paralegals, LLC.

I have a BA from the University of Texas at Austin, a Paralegal Certificate from Southwestern Paralegal Institute, Houston, have done Post-Baccalaureate work at the University of Houston and Kennesaw State University, and have a Master of Science of Law from Thomas Jefferson School of Law (2012).

4.    What prompted you to choose a paralegal career? In all honesty, I had never even heard of paralegals until I graduated from college. The plan was to go to medical school. Like most college students, I changed my major a few times (and ended up with two minors - Psychology and Classical Civilization). I finally settled on Political Science and pre-law.

Life got in the way and I decided to put law school on hold while I got my bearings. I did some research and discovered this ‘new’ program - paralegal training. I signed up; figured I’d work as a paralegal for a few years and then go to law school … the rest, as they say, is history.

5.    What is your favorite part of your job? Now that I am on my own - everything!! Seriously, it is hard to define my favorite part. Being a paralegal is almost like being a professional student; I am always learning something new.

I’d have to say that losing my job is the event that kick-started my real paralegal career and gave me the courage really grow and succeed.

13. Is there a philosophy you live by? "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And if I only care for myself, what am I?" (Hillel, Babylonian Talmud, Avot 1:14)

Paralegal Planaphobia: What is it? Do you have it?

Planaphobia is a common malady I've identified while studying time management issues. It strikes large numbers of our population, even paralegals.

What is it? Planaphobia is the fear of planning.

Planaphobia stops you in your tracks and keeps you from enjoying many of the things you'd really like to do but are afraid to plan for. Perhaps you'll be too busy at work. Perhaps something better will come up. Perhaps you won't feel well that day. Perhaps a volcano will erupt and you won't be able to fly. The excuses are endless.

Do you envy the people who always know in July what they're doing over Christmas vacation? Who purchase concert tickets months in advance? Who make flight arrangements early enough to use their frequent flier miles? Who have standing appointments for 'high maintenance' activities like manicures and pedicures and getting their hair done?

They're never scrambling at the last minute hoping they can be 'worked in'. They never miss the opening of the new play. They never have to take the 'left over' seats on the airplane and end up monitoring the toilets. They're simply not afraid to make those plans in advance...and usually their plans work out just as (ahem!) PLANNED.

Let me tell you about my friend Michelle who definitely DOES NOT have Planaphobia. She traveled to Ireland with friends in 2009. They had such a fabulous time that they wanted to return to see the rest of the country and visit some of their favorite sights....and soon because they're not getting any younger: they want to enjoy walking in the countryside and the grounds of castles, cathedrals, villages and other landmarks.

How did Michelle...who's a single, hard working paralegal...make this happen? Is she just 'lucky'? No!

One of her favorite quotes is from Abraham Lincoln:
"Commitment is what transforms promise into reality."

She lives by this quote. She made a commitment and then she made her plans. She and her friends set a date, made flight reservations and hired their driver well ahead of their departure date. Then she started her 'Ireland fund' to set aside money from each paycheck and any bonus that came her way.

The volcano in Iceland did erupt just before Michelle's scheduled trip. Did that stop her? Why would it? Of course she held her breath until the plane touched down in Dublin...but she just figured if she got stuck over there she'd use her Irish background to buy a pub and put her prior bartending experience to good use. She was 'going with the flow'.

In the end, the trip went off without a hitch, and Michelle returned to her paralegal job savoring many happy memories. She has absolutely no regrets...except perhaps that she didn't get her Irish pub.

Time marches on. The months and years go by in spite of your hesitation and fears. If you have Planaphobia, there are steps you can take that will help you make plans and enjoy life to the fullest:

Always have a bucket list. Almost everyone has seen the movie 'Bucket List' starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, two men who are facing death so they go about fulfilling the items on their list of things they want to accomplish before they 'kick the bucket. You should have an ongoing 'bucket list' of things you want to accomplish or do during both in the near future and as your life goes on.
Routinely update your bucket list. A bucket list is a work in progress that will change as you cross things off or think of new things to add. The lesson to be learned is don't wait, or waste, another minute. Make your list, clarify what is important to you, and start living a more fulfilling life TODAY.
Remember, the creation of a list of life goals allows you to imagine a life that is rich in possibilities. You always have something to look forward to. When you declare your goals, you declare your intent and raise your level of awareness of opportunities that are there for you.
If making a plan is too overwhelming, break it into small steps. If you're paralyzed by a big goal, you should consider the steps you must take to achieve the goal and then work on accomplishing each step. Plan when you will do each one. Little by little, you'll reach the big goal just like Michelle who contributed to her 'Ireland Fund' with each paycheck.
Use your calendar to make your plans. A calendar offers you a year of endless possibilities. Days and months with nothing on them give you permission to make commitments. For instance, the Charlevoix Waterfront Art Fair has taken place on the second Saturday in August every year for 52 years. It's a given that in January I'll enter that date in August on my calendar so I can attend.

If this is still difficult for you, one thing that might help is to put optional meetings or anything else that comes up on your calendar. They'll go on with or without you, but if your event or travel is canceled, you'll be able to pick up where you left off and attend the event you originally thought you had to miss.

Don't hesitate to accept invitations. If you have nothing else on your calendar, go ahead and RSVP immediately. If you hesitate, you'll wait until it's too late and you'll have another missed opportunity.

Retain your spontaneity. Life is all about seizing the moment. Everything doesn't have to be planned down to the minute. If something you'd like to do comes up on the spur of the moment, don't hesitate to say 'YES!' and enjoy.

When you get past your Planaphobia, be ready to be amazed at the joy you'll feel. You'll be doing more of the things you really want to do. You'll be more calm, happier and you'll always feel 'ahead of the game'. Remember this quote from Peter F. Drucker: "Unless commitment is made, there are only promises and hopes; but no plans." Promises and hopes aren't the same as actually doing...and life is about doing."

1. Tell us about your job. I am a paralegal with Helzell Fetterman, LLP in Seattle, WA. My job focuses on estate planning, probate and taxation.

2. What prompted you to choose a paralegal career? I was a young girl when I told my grandfather that I wanted to be an attorney. He encouraged me, telling me that with hard work and determination, I could accomplish anything I wanted.

I lost sight of my goal for a few years until one day I realized I wasn't living up to my full potential. I enrolled in the paralegal program at San Joaquin College of Law in Clovis, California, and before graduation was working as a paralegal specializing in estate planning and taxation.

3.    What is your favorite part of your job? I am so happy that I chose to enter the legal field. As a probate paralegal, I am the person who is on the other line to help our clients with a complicated procedure during a very difficult time in their lives. I enjoy helping our clients and assisting them in gathering asset information we need for the preparation of the inventory and estate tax return, if one is required.

However, as much as I like preparing the inventories and estate tax returns -- and I do -- I would have to say that my favorite thing to do is present a new probate matter in Court. As a King County Bar Association Registered Legal Assistant, I am authorized to personally present orders in the Ex Parte Courtroom. It is an exciting process, and I have found the judges and commissioners to be very supportive of my role in the probate process.

4.    What professional associations do you belong to? I am a member of NALS...the association for legal professionals.

5.    How has your membership benefited you? Joining NALS was one of the best professional decisions I have ever made. I joined as a student in 2004 because I wanted to become certified as a way to set myself apart from my schoolmates. Not long after that, I decided I wanted more from my membership and became involved on the national, state, and local levels.

I am mid-way through my term as NALS Marketing Director and am a member of the NALS Think Tank. I love the work that we do on the board and with the “Tank” and really enjoy being a part of the governing process.

6.    What has been the highlight of your career? Serving as the 2008-09 NALS of Greater Seattle President was a great honor for me. It was a very exciting year, and I am proud of everything that our board of directors accomplished. In addition to our regularly scheduled Noontime Seminars and evening membership meetings, we also organized a Meet & Greet social and two full-day CLE programs. That year we also launched an electronic newsletter and were honored to win the NALS Foundation Jett Award, 2010 Founders Award, for one of its new features, "Where's Eula Mae."

7.    What do you see as hot trends in the paralegal industry? Paralegal regulation continues to be a hot topic. I'm sure your readers have varying views; however, whether you are for regulation or not, I think you should keep yourself informed and self-regulate. The legal field is dynamic and to be a good paralegal, you need to attend CLEs that pertain to your area of law and that help you grow as a professional.

8.    If someone contemplating a paralegal career asked you for career advice, what would your answer be? My advice would be the same as my grandfather's was to me years ago: if you are determined and work hard, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. And always, always remember that you will play an important role in your law firm and may be the person who has the most contact with your clients, so you should represent yourself professionally and positively.

10.     You've enjoyed a successful paralegal career. To what single event or person do you attribute that success? I would never be where I am today without the support of my significant other, George. Although I know he would like to sometimes talk about something other than NALS or what I learned in the office that day, he has been there by my side from the beginning and is always willing to help me with my projects and give me advice.

11. What is the most important step a paralegal can take to keep his or her career interesting? Join your local paralegal organization. It is the best way to stay ahead of the trends in the legal field and to network with other legal professionals.

12. What time in the morning do you first check your email? As soon as I wake up – bright and early at 5:15 am.

13.What was your first job? My first job was working for the Bashful Butler, a catering company owned by my friends' uncle. We were the official caterers for the Tournament of Roses, and in addition to the big party at the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day, we catered all of the float construction events in the air conditioned 'float barns.' I'll never forget how cold those nights were, but the job had some good perks, like cake every weekend!

Bonus Question: What’s your favorite food? I’m not sure if it counts as “food,” but I love candy! Last October at NALS11 in Cincinnati, my roommate Renee Kleinjan, introduced me to my new favorite concoction: candy corn mixed with dry roasted peanuts. Yum!

Paralegals are in charge of covering all the bases, particularly when assisting at trial. I was reminded of this when Lynne DeVenny and I interviewed Ted Brooks, Founder & CEO of Litigation-Tech LLC, on this months Paralegal Voice produced by Legal Talk Network.

Ted discussed the latest in Court Technology for Paralegals. He is one of the most widely-recognized figures in Trial Presentation and Legal Technology. Never Retire Your Paralegal Work Horses

Where are your old work horses?
Don't put them out to pasture! Make them leaders for life.

Where do the officers of your association go when their terms of office are completed?

Are they turned out to pasture like these old horses, simply roaming free and no longer concerned with the future of the association?

You may think your past officers have earned the right to roam free, but what they have really earned is the privilege of not working quite so hard.

These past leaders remain vital to the continuity of the association. Their leadership skills, talent and expertise are needed to keep your association moving forward.

Instead of squandering all that knowledge and experience, harness those old horses and bring them back to the barn. Appoint them Leaders for Life and keep them involved. This doesn't mean the past leaders should be circulated back through the chairs, though. Your association will fold if the same old horses keep on doing all the work.

How should you use your Leaders for Life? This is simple. Tell them how valuable they are to your association and ask them what they'd be willing to do. You'll be pleasantly surprised that they're not exactly happy out in the pasture and are willing to help in any way they can.

Here are some excellent ways to use the talents of your Leaders for Life:

Planning meetings and educational events. Past leaders are pros at planning and they usually have the connections to draw upon to make your conventions a smashing success.

Speakers. Past leaders usually have a wealth of professional knowledge and experience and make excellent speakers for your seminars.

Ad Hoc Committees. Do you have a short term issue that needs to be handled? Appoint the past officers.

Special Committees. Past officers make excellent members of special committees, such as those for scholarships and awards.

Liaisons. Appoint the past officers liaisons to special groups, such as the bar association and paralegal schools.

Officer orientation. Past officers have extremely valuable experience and knowledge, not to mention their finely honed leadership skills. Bring them in to share this with the new officers as they're taking the reins.

Mentors. The experiences of the past offices, as well as their tactful counsel, make excellent mentors for current and upcoming leaders.

Certification review courses or other certification-related issues. Your past leaders have "been there, done that" so they are perfect candidates for leading review courses and they're also great cheerleaders for those who are seeking certification. Their history makes them perfect choices when your association has certification-related issues.

There are also tips for the Leaders for Life who have been corralled:

Become a member of the team. Let them know you will help and assist any way you can. Be available when they need you.

Become a steady resource. Nurture, encourage and empower the members and officers. Be sure they're comfortable asking for your advice and direction but don't insist that they do everything your way.

Be gracious. You may not always agree with the new leaders, but allow them to forge their own future. Don't say "we did it this way" or "our way was better". Times do change...they need to change...and the 'old way' may not be the best way any longer.

Give only what you can. You may not have the time or the energy you once had. That's OK because you can help on many levels. Anything you do for the association is needed and will be appreciated.

Be miserly with your criticism and lavish with your praise. Leaders for Life boost members' self-esteem and help them reach their full potential. This is how future Leaders for Life get their training.

Set a good example. The members and current officers will learn from your style and your grace.

Try not to serve on the Board again. If it becomes necessary for you to take a Board position, do your job without taking over. Let the new leaders have the limelight.

Former officers and board members should not simply sit back and let the newer members fend for themselves. While their terms of office are over, they are still leaders of the association and the profession. Their knowledge and expertise, as well as the history they share, are still very much needed. It's up to the current leaders and members recognize their value, invite them back, make them useful, and insist that they be Leaders for Life.

Linda is a Paralegal with Arnstein & Lehr, LLP. in Miami where she specializes in Litigation - discovery and trial practice. She works primarily in the field of products liability and wrongful death defense. She has her Paralegal Certificate and Bachelors Degree in Legal Studies from Barry University. She has also taken numerous advanced paralegal NALA and e-discovery courses through The Paralegal Knowledge Institute in addition to countless other continuing education courses.

1. What prompted you to choose a paralegal career? I was always interested in the legal field but I never wanted to be an attorney. I had no desire to be “running the show.”

I knew that being a paralegal was a job that I could turn into a fantastic career if I dedicated myself to it. I saw endless possibilities and knew I could really make it my own.

2.    What is your favorite part of your job? Well, I consider myself a problem solver and I like to find creative and out of the box ways to solve problems or issues that other people haven’t considered.

There really is no shortage of issues to resolve in litigation. I also love the challenge of fact finding through investigation and discovery. I really enjoy being a part of the team and playing my role in finding information and solving problems. I am so lucky to work with a wonderful group of attorneys and support staff, I really couldn’t ask for a better team.

3.    What professional associations do you belong to? I belong to the Dade County Bar Association (DCBA) and was the inaugural vice-chair for their Florida Registered Paralegal Committee. This year, I have the honor of being the chair of that same committee. I am on the advisory panel for the Paralegal Knowledge Institute which provides an educational and networking community for paralegals. I am also registered with the Florida Bar - non-lawyers are technically not members but have a bar number and have access to the member website and member benefits.

4.    How has your membership benefited you?   My involvement with the Florida Bar and the DCBA has added significant value to my “professional profile”. I believe that it reflects my desire to continue my professional development and adds to the fact that I consider this a professional career and not just a job that is a hop, skip and jump away from becoming a lawyer.

It is an honor to be involved with two very prestigious organizations which only started allowing non-attorney participation in recent years. The networking opportunities and quality of CLE programs through the DCBA are bar none.

Also, being associated with the Paralegal Knowledge Institute has allowed me to take numerous educational courses which have increased my value as a paralegal. It has also allowed me to explore my interest in getting more involved with publishing and educating others.

5.    What do you see as hot trends in the paralegal industry? E-Discovery! Anyone who isn’t learning about e-discovery at this point is going to be behind right out of the gate. It’s a hot topic right now and is only getting hotter. Even if your office isn’t currently involved in e-discovery, the odds are that they will be in the future and anything you can do to advance your own value and skill is a big plus.

6.    If someone contemplating a paralegal career asked you for career advice, what would your answer be? Do your homework and know what you are getting in to. You should make sure to research your local market to see what employers are looking for as far as experience, education and/or certification. Please don’t sign up with the first “school” looking to make a quick buck and think you will be making top dollar the week after you graduate. You also need to have reasonable and clear expectations as far as the availability of jobs and salary range for new paralegals to avoid a nasty surprise later on. It is a wonderful and very rewarding career, but it is a lot of hard work and requires dedication.

7.    What makes you lose your patience? Oh gosh, this is a loaded question. Instead of telling you what makes me lose my patience, I will instead offer this advice:
If you ask a question pay attention to the answer - take notes if you need to, clarify if necessary and ask follow up or related questions. Don’t come back later and ask the exact same question as if the prior conversation had never happened.

If you want to ask someone to do you a favor, make sure you have fully thought it through and know what you want before you ask it. If you aren’t sure, make that known when you ask for the favor so the person has the whole story. If someone is going out on a limb for you, make sure you aren’t wasting their time.

8.    You've enjoyed a successful paralegal career. To what single event or person do you attribute that success? I absolutely attribute my success to the lessons my family taught me – especially my mom and dad, sister and husband – sorry I can’t pick just one!

They taught me to dream big and always aspire to be my best, to never let obstacles stand in my way, and to be myself. They taught me that the things you want are not just going to fall into your lap, if you want to accomplish something, hard work and dedication is the best way to go about it. They also taught me to be independent and that I should always help myself before asking others for help. I am the person that I am today because of my family.

9.    What is the most important step a paralegal can take to keep his or her career interesting? I can kind of sum it up by saying “get involved!” The easiest way to lose interest is to be stagnant. If you really want to spice up your career, attend networking events, join a paralegal group or local bar association, write an article, be a mentor, continue your education. You should never stop learning.

10. What was the last movie you saw in the theater? Shark Night 3D – I am a crazed fan of cheesy ‘horror’ flicks. My husband, who is much less of a fan, took me to see it the morning of my last out of town trip for work. It was his idea, so I know he still loves me despite my love of cheesy movies and occasional out of town work trips!

11. If you could not be a paralegal, what would be your dream job? Well, I love to cook and it has always been a dream of mine to own a restaurant. It would be a home-style comfort food type of place and probably not the kind of place to go if you’re watching your calories. I’ve also dreamed of owning a doggie-daycare type of business. Really random, I know. So, if I ever hit the powerball (I don’t actually play the lotto so don’t expect this any time soon) be on the lookout for a dog friendly home-style restaurant. You can enjoy your meal while your furry friends romp next door!

12. What college classes did you love? I really loved art and philosophy. As an elective, I took an art course where we actually created art – as opposed to an art history type of course. To be clear, I have no artistic talent to speak of and none of the art that I created would ever be hung on the wall of any sane person. However, I had such a fantastic time and have really fond memories of those classes. I also took several philosophy classes and really enjoyed them - I found them intriguing.

13. Do you have any paralegal certifications? I am an Advanced Certified Paralegal (ACP) through NALA and a Florida Registered Paralegal (FRP) through the Florida Bar. I also plan to take the Certified eDiscovery Professional (CeDP) exam in the near future.

Bonus Question: What unusual item do you own? I actually don’t think I own anything at all that is unusual. I am owned, however, by three unusual dogs. They aren’t items although they are generally fixtures around my feet.

My three dogs are a breed called the Chinese Crested. Two of them are hairless, and one of them is a powder puff. Generally, people I encounter have never heard of this breed but most people have seen them before and just don’t realize it. The winners of quite a number of ugly dog competitions are generally a Chinese Crested mix, and they have had parts in more than a few movies. My three boys would never win an ugly dog competition, and as any good mom would, I think they are gorgeous!

7 Strategies for Your Successful Job Search

I hear daily from paralegals who are just out of school and others who have been downsized and find themselves updating their resumes and hoping for a new position before their unemployment benefits end.

When they come to me for advice, the first thing I tell them is that they DO have a job: they’re now self-employed and their job is finding a job. They have to treat this new job as though it is their own business and go to work every day. This is serious hard work!

Here are 7 strategies for making your new "job" of job hunting a success:

1. Know Your Market. Do some research to determine what employers are looking for. You should craft your resume and your job search to be the perfect candidate for those jobs.
Also, remember that many jobs are never advertised, but exist in the minds of the partners or Human Resources Director. If they view you as the perfect candidate for that position, they may hire you without ever interviewing any other candidates.

2. Do an inventory. Make a detailed list of your skills, experience, accomplishments, interests, goals and values. What are your strengths and where will they fit? You will need to be able to communicate, both verbally and in writing, how you are the unique and perfect candidate for a job.

Your inventory should also serve as a road map to other areas where your skills and experience would transfer. Also, know your salary expectations and be prepared to have that discussion. Communicate this in a such a way that the value you would bring to the position is commensurate with that salary level. Know also that you may have to get real about what your next job will pay. It may be more important to get your foot in the door and have those all-important benefits.

3. Develop a Plan. Begin with a clear, concise resume and a concise cover letter that states how your qualifications match job requirements. Both your resume and cover letter should be designed to catch the potential employer’s attention.

Identify potential employers and start sending those resumes, whether they are advertising open positions or not. Consider using an appropriate employment agency but sure you understand what the agency will do for you and if there is a cost. This can be an excellent job lead resource. Also think about doing some temporary or freelance work that may result in

(a) additional contacts;

(b) new skills and experience;

(c) additional income to tide you over while you’re unemployed; and

(d) put you in a position to be available when a full-time job is available.

4. Get the word out. Let everyone you can think of know that you are looking for employment. That includes friends, colleagues, neighbors, members of your professional association, former professors and classmates. It does not matter if they are located right in your hometown or living in Timbuktu, let them know. This network is an important piece of your job search plan. There is always someone out there who knows someone who knows someone else who might help you.

5. Boost your network. Sign up for job search newsletters and e-mail blasts. Post on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube. Take the time to actively participate in Internet discussion boards and forums. Done the right way, social networking can be priceless job search tool. Just remember that everything you post is public in some way and that, once on the Internet, it does not go away. These sites are used by people who are hiring to screen potential job candidates. You will want your posts to say positive things about you.

6. Do not wait for opportunity to knock on your door. This most likely will not happen. Instead, make your own opportunities by being persistent, assertive and proactive. As intimidating as it may be, make those cold calls to potential employers. This is important for two reasons: first, you need to beat your competition to the draw; and second, it demonstrates to the potential employers that you are serious.

7. Keep track of your progress. Maintain detailed records of the jobs you have applied for. This would include communications, interviews, referrals, and any follow-up actions you take. You are building a list of valuable contacts for current and future job searches. During this process, be sure to mind your ‘P’s and Q’s’ by writing thank you notes and speaking positively about the people who have interviewed you. Remaining polite and positive is key.

The job of searching for a job is hard work. It may be the most difficult job you have ever had and it is essential that you maintain a positive attitude. If you take steps to stand head and shoulders above the rest of the job-hunting crowd by developing some effective strategies and defining what you want and need, you will be on your way to losing your current job-hunting job (hurray!!!) and landing that full-time position.

1.    What prompted you to choose a paralegal career? While I enjoyed a successful career in the restaurant industry, which spanned almost 20 years, I began to feel as if something was missing. I decided to go back to college so that I could reinvent my career path. I longed for a career that would provide me with daily challenges and allow me to offer a valued service to the public.

For many years, I would not allow myself to “think” that I had chosen the right career path because I wanted to be absolutely certain of that fact. It wasn’t until I started working solely as a probate paralegal that I realized I had, in fact, chosen the right career path. I thrive in the probate realm. I truly love the personal fulfillment that it gives me to help our clients with their legal issues.

2.    What is your favorite part of your job?   I simply love helping clients work through their Estate Plan or Post Death Administration. Estate Planning or the death of a loved one is difficult enough. I am very lucky to work for an attorney who not only shares my compassion for a client’s unfortunate situation, but honestly cares about the outcome, which I find creates a positive yet rewarding work atmosphere.

3.    What professional associations do you belong to? I am an active member of the El Camino College Paralegal Advisory Committee, Committee Member of the Los Angeles Paralegal Association - South Bay Section, and a Mentor at The Paralegal Society.

4.    How has your membership benefited you?   I could say that my initial intent to join professional associations was primarily for my benefit, but it wasn’t. Early in my career I noticed that the paralegal profession lacked support. It was unfortunate. As a Mentor at The Paralegal Society, I now have the platform to help motivate and inspire paralegals all across the country. With the help of The Paralegal Society’s Founder, Jamie Collins, I have found my “writing” voice. I now love writing articles geared toward new paralegals. I really enjoy being able to help motivate and inspire their journey in the early stages of their legal careers. I find it very rewarding and personally fulfilling.

5.    What has been the highlight of your career? I have been very fortunate to work with some very influential people in my career. One of them is Vi Pham, Paralegal Program Director at El Camino College. Together, in 2008, we developed the El Camino College Paralegal Club to provide an on-campus support system for future paralegals. I am proud to say that the club continues to provide students individual and group support with things such as drafting resumes, interview techniques, and job search tips.

6.    If someone contemplating a paralegal career asked you for career advice, what would your answer be? Keep an open mind and remain humble throughout your daily interactions with clients, classmates, associations, and coworkers. As soon as a person begins to close their mind to new possibilities or becomes overconfident, the best and most interesting people, experiences or career opportunities will pass them by. I feel it is key to keep an open mind and be open to any opportunities that may come your way.

7.    Is there a quote that inspires you? “It’s easy to make a buck. It’s a lot tougher to make a difference.” — Tom Brokaw

8.    What advice would you give yourself if you met you as a first-year paralegal? It is okay that you don’t have any previous experience in the law profession.

Many first-year paralegals do not realize that they possess practical qualities that can be developed into indispensible law office work traits. As impossible as it might sound, you will find your own niche in the profession. Just be yourself and work to learn all you can as fast as you can!

9.    What was your first job? My first job was at the young age of 14 working as a counter waitress at a local breakfast house. I continued to work in the restaurant industry for almost twenty years! It wasn’t until then that I decided to take a chance, complete college and make the career switch to the legal profession.

10.    What is the best live concert you’ve ever attended? I have seen Heart two times at The Greek. Ann and Nancy Wilson performed a great rendition of “Love, Reign o’er Me” by The Who. Very memorable and unforgettable!

11.    What sports team are you passionate about? The Kings! Hockey has been a passion of mine for quite awhile. Although I love watching the games on TV, I most enjoy going to the games at the Staples Center. There is no other feeling like the anticipation of the game, the feel of the cold air coming up off the ice, and watching an exciting game! Go Kings!

12.    What time in the morning do you first check your email? Typically I get up early in the morning to peruse my personal email before work. If it is an emergency, I answer the email right away. Otherwise, I wait and group my responses and reply all at one time. At work, I check and respond to my email as soon as I walk in the door. My philosophy is that during the work week, work email is priority over personal email. In fact, unless I’m on a break, I don’t have the link to my personal email active at work.

13.    What unusual item do you own? I own multiple lint rollers that are placed in different locations like my car, kitchen, desk drawer, and purse. My two cats love me so much, that they follow me everywhere I go – so does their hair!

Bonus Question: What fad do you regret being a part of? Wow, that’s an easy one. Anything involving the 80’s: big hair, neon earrings, WHAM!, turquoise eyeliner, and stirrup pants! Just embarrassing!
