First Quarter Highlights:Revenue reached $0.6 million for the first quarter, an increase of 7.4% over the same period last year;Net loss for the quarter decreased by $0.5 million or 18% to reach $2.3 million, compared to a net loss of $2.8 million in the first quarter of 2006;A public offering was completed for total gross proceeds of $12.4 million.Mr. Benoit Huet, President and CEO of Victhom, said: "During the first quarter, Victhom achieved two important milestones with the refocusing of the R&D activities and the conclusion of a $12.4 million public offering that considerably strengthens our balance sheet and demonstrates confidence in our business prospects". He mentioned that the addition of Mr. Nader Kameli as COO of the Neurobionix business unit is strengthening Victhom's expertise in the high-growth Neuromodulation industry. He also added that Dr. Guy Chamberland, Vice President, Clinical and Regulatory Affairs, has left the Company but will remain involved with Victhom as a consultant on a part-time basis.First Quarter ResultsFor the three-month period ended on March 31, 2007, the Company recorded revenues of $560,235 compared with $521,516 for the same period in 2006, representing an increase of $38,719 or 7.4%. The revenue increase compared to last year is attributable to the growth in nonrefundable advance royalty payments from our partner in the orthotics and prosthetics market. R&D expenses, before tax credits and grants, amounted to $1,984,179 for the three-month period ended on March 31, 2007, compared with $2,034,493 for the same period in 2006, representing a decrease of $50,314 or 2.5%. The decrease in R&D expenses is the result of the refocusing of the Neurobionix division R&D activities announced in January 2007, which resulted in a reduction in the number of employees. G&A expenses, net of non-cash stock-based compensation charges of $30,366, for the threemonth period ended on March 31, 2007, amounted to $603,977 compared with $807,928 for the same period in 2006, a decrease of $203,951 or 25%. The decrease is mainly due to a staff reduction in administrative functions and lower professional fees. Consolidated net loss for the quarter ended March 31, 2007, amounted to $2,254,308 compared to $2,757,567 for the same period in 2006, a decrease of $503,259 or 18%. The net loss, net of non-cash charges of $825,473, for the three-month period ended March 31, 2007, amounted to $1,428,835 compared to a net loss, net of non-cash charges of $905,461, for the same period in 2006, which amounted to $1,852,106, a decrease of $423,271 or 23%. The decrease in net loss, net of non-cash charges, is mainly the result of the lower development costs and G&A costs following the refocusing of R&D activities announced in January.Financial SituationAt March 31, 2007, the Company had cash and cash equivalents position of $17 million compared to $6.5 million as at December 31, 2006. The increase was mainly due to the issuance of shares in the financing completed in March for gross proceeds of $12.4 million. The Company believes that with its current financial resources it will have sufficient liquidity to support its cash flow requirements for at least the next 12 months. On March 31, 2007, the number of common shares outstanding totaled 87,922,263 while 4,241,876 options were granted under the stock option plan and 25,964,942 share purchase warrants are in circulation pursuant to past unit offerings. This factor was partially offset by the growth, compared to last year, in non-refundable advance royalty payments from our partner in the Orthotics and Prosthetics market.Research and Development (??R&D??) expenses, before tax credits and grants, amounted to $8.4 million in 2006 compared with $6.2 million in 2005, an increase of 35%. For the fourth quarter 2006, the R&D expenses, before tax credits and grants, amounted to $2.2 million compared with $1.6 million in 2005, an increase of 38%. The increase in R&D expenses is the result of higher development costs directly linked to the Company??s product rollout strategy in the neuromodulation market. Also, in 2005, a portion of the R&D expenses was allocated to the cost of revenues to account for the work performed on a collaborative work contract with a medical device company.General and administrative (??G&A??) expenses, net of non-cash stock based compensation charge of $0.4 million, for the year ended on December 31, 2006 amounted to $3.0 million compared with $3.0 million for the same period in 2005. For the fourth quarter 2006, the G&A expenses, net of non-cash stock based compensation charge, amounted to $0.7 million compared with $0.8 million for the same period in 2005, a decrease of 14% mainly due to lower professional fees.Consolidated net loss for the year ended on December 31, 2006, amounted to $10.1 million compared to $8.2 million for the same period in 2005, an increase of 24%. Consolidated net loss, net of non-cash charges of $3.4 million for the year ended on December 31, 2006, amounted to $6.7 million compared to a net loss, net of non-cash charges of $2.4 million for the same period in 2005, which amounted to $5.8 million, an increase of 16%. Consolidated net loss, net of non-cash charges of $0.7 million, for the quarter ended on December 31, 2006, amounted to $1.9 million compared to a net loss, net of non-cash charges of $0.2 million for the fourth quarter in 2005, which amounted to $1.4 million, an increase of 33%. The increase in net loss, net of non-cash charges, is mainly the result of higher development costs directly linked to the Company??s product rollout strategy in the neuromodulation market. On December 31, 2006, the Company had cash and cash equivalents position of $6.5 million. The Company believes that with its current and planned financial resources, including the gross proceeds of $12.4M from the financing announced on March 16, 2007, it will have sufficient liquidity to support its cash flow requirements for at least the next 12 months. On December 31, 2006, the number of common shares outstanding totaled 52,592,440 while 4,575,729 options were granted under the stock option plan and 7,613,511 share purchase warrants are in circulation pursuant to past unit offerings. The outstanding options and share purchase warrants are exercisable respectively at a weighted average price of $0.98 and $1.58 per share.About VicthomVicthom researches, develops and delivers bionic devices that treat a variety of physiological dysfunctions.
REFOCUSES ITS R&D ACTIVITIESQuebec, Canada, January 16, 2007 - Victhom Human Bionics Inc. (TSX: VHB) announces today that it received approval from the Ethics Review Board of the rehabilitation center where its clinical trial on gait disorders will be held. The Company received its Investigational Testing Authorization in December 2006 from Health Canada. The Neurostep? is designed to treat, through neuromodulation, gait disorders (e.g., foot drop) secondary to a lesion of the central nervous system caused by conditions such as stroke or multiple sclerosis. Over one million patients in the U.S. and in Europe could benefit from this product.Dr. Guy Chamberland, M.Sc., Ph.D., Vice President Clinical and Regulatory Affairs, stated that the Company was initiating patient enrolment for its clinical trial this month. This will be the world??s first human trial of a fully implantable Closed-Loop System (sensing and stimulation) for the peripheral nervous system.Mr. Stéphane Bédard, Executive Vice President and COO, stated that in light of the above, the Company is focusing the R&D activities of its NeuroBionix division on the clinical development of the Neurostep? and aggressively pursuing the development of a closed-loop neuromodulator (neurosensing and neurostimulation of the peripheral nervous system) for the treatment of pathologies such as sleep apnea, obesity and chronic pain. Victhom also announced it has put on hold the preclinical development of a bladder neuroprosthesis for patients with spinal cord injury. This decision was made after a normal course review of the entire portfolio of programs under development and to optimize R&D expenses. As part of the refocusing of its R&D activities, Victhom has reduced the number of its employees. This reduction will result in a non-material and non-recurring charge for the Company. This will also allow Victhom to conduct its clinical activities in 2007 with the required resources.About VicthomVicthom Human Bionics (TSX: VHB) researches, develops and delivers bionic devices that treat a variety of physiological dysfunctions.
