THE WORLD’S END is an upcoming British science-fiction comedy film directed by Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), written by Wright and Simon Pegg, and starring Pegg and Nick Frost. The three and the film’s producer Nira Park have previously worked together on the television series “Spaced,” as well as the other two films in the so-called “Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy” (aka “Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy”), that began with the zombie flick “Shaun of the Dead” (2004) and continued with the action-leaning “Hot Fuzz” (2007). Wright has described the film (THE WORLD’S END) as an example of the social science-fiction genre, in the tradition of John Wyndham and Samuel Youd.

Five childhood friends reunite after twenty years to repeat a legendary pub crawl from their youth, returning to their hometown once again to attempt to reach the fabled pub “The World’s End”. Over the course of the night, they begin to realise that the real struggle is “not just theirs but humankind’s”, and completing the crawl becomes the least of their worries.

FRUITVALE STATION (originally titled Fruitvale) is an indie drama film written and directed by Ryan Coogler which marks his first feature-length film, and Oscar-winning actor Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) is among the producers. It was the winner of both the Grand Jury Prize for dramatic feature and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, and has been selected to compete in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

The film stars Michael B. Jordan as Oscar Grant, a young man who was shot to death by police officer Johannes Mehserle at the Oakland, California Fruitvale rapid transit station. Kevin Durand and Chad Michael Murray plays the two BART police officers involved in Grant’s death. The names of the officers were changed for the film.

It follows the true story of Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan), a 22-year-old Bay Area resident who wakes up on the morning of December 31, 2008 and feels something in the air. Not sure what it is, he takes it as a sign to get a head start on his resolutions: being a better son to his mother (Octavia Spencer), whose birthday falls on New Year’s Eve, being a better partner to his girlfriend Sophina (Melonie Diaz), who he hasn’t been completely honest with as of late, and being a better father to Tatiana (Ariana Neal), their beautiful four year-old daughter. Crossing paths with friends, family, and strangers, Oscar starts out well, but as the day goes on, he realizes that change is not going to come easily. His resolve takes a tragic turn, however, when BART officers shoot him in cold blood at the Fruitvale subway stop on New Year’s Day. Oscar’s life and tragic death would shake the Bay Area – and the entire nation – to its very core.

The film is directed by TV producer John Wells (ER, The West Wing), and produced by George Clooney, Jean Doumanian, Grant Heslov, Steve Traxler and Harvey Weinstein. Its ensemble cast is led by Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts. The film tells the dark, hilarious and deeply touching story of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose lives have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Midwest house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them.

In Oklahoma, in August, Beverly Weston (Sam Shepard), is a poet with a drinking problem while his wife, Violet (Streep) suffers from mouth cancer and has a newly developed addiction to drugs. Beverly decides to hire a live-in cook and caregiver for Violet. A few weeks after Johnna (Misty Upham) is hired, Beverly disappears which motivates the family to come together to look for him but only to find a few days later that he has committed suicide. Violet and Beverly’s daughters, Barbara (Roberts) and Karen (Juliette Lewis), along with Ivy (Julianne Nicholson) who lives in the house, come to their father’s funeral, as does the entire family. A series of conflicts ensue over the next several days as Violet and Barbara have never understood each other. Karen’s fiance proves to be a pot smoker and tries to molest his soon to be niece, Ivy is planning to run away with her cousin after engaging in a romantic relationship. At the end Violet remains alone, only with Johnna.

GRAVITY is an upcoming highly anticipated sci-fi drama film co-written, produced, co-edited and directed by Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Y Tu Mamá También). The film stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as surviving astronauts in a damaged space station.

Cuarón wrote the screenplay with his son Jonás and attempted to develop the project at Universal Pictures. The project found traction at Warner Bros. instead and the studio approached multiple actresses (Scarlett Johansson, Blake Lively, Natalie Portman) before casting Bullock in the female lead role. Robert Downey, Jr. was also involved as the male lead before leaving the project and being replaced by Clooney.

Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone–tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.
