Filmmaker Wim Wenders captures dancers in motion

as a tribute to choreographer Pina Bausch.

Now Playing in NYC

PINA is a feature-length dance film in 3D with the ensemble of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, featuring the unique and inspiring art of the great German dancer and choreographer, who died in the summer of 2009.

Wim Wenders takes the audience on a sensual, visually stunning journey of discovery into a new dimension: straight onto the stage with the legendary Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch ensemble, he follows the dancers out of the theatre into the city and the surrounding areas of Wuppertal - the place, which for 35 years was the home and centre for Pina Bausch's creativity.

The film includes excerpts from the four productions of "Café Müller", "Le Sacre du printemps", "Vollmond" and "Kontakthof", archive footage of Pina Bausch at work, innovatively inserted in the 3D world of the film as a third element, with many imaginative, short solo performances by the dancers of the ensemble.

To achieve this, Wim Wenders used Pina Bausch's own method of "questioning" with which the choreographer developed her new productions. She posed questions and her dancers answered not in words, but with improvised dance and body language.

Beyonce's Music Video Showcases the Works of Choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker

The Performance Club announced that Beyonce's Music Video, 'Countdown' showcases the choreography from Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker's works from 1983 and 1990, but doesn't credit the choreographer in the music video. She was contacted via Facebook to learn the news.

"Like so many people, I was extremely surprised when I got a message through Facebook about the special appearance of my two choreographies – Rosas danst Rosas (1983) and Achterland (1990) in Beyoncé’s new videoclip 'Countdown'.

I was asked if I were now selling out Rosas into the commercial circuit…When I saw the actual video, I was struck by the resemblance of Beyoncé’s clip not only with the movements from Rosas danst Rosas, but also with the costumes, the set and even the shots from the film by Thierry De Mey.

Obviously, Beyoncé, or the video clip director Adria Petty, plundered many bits of the integral scenes in the film, which the videoclip made by Studio Brussel by juxtaposing Beyoncé‘s video and the Rosas danst Rosas film gives a taste of. But this videoclip is far from showing all materials that Beyoncé took from Rosas in Countdown. There are many movements taken from Achterland, but it is less visible because of the difference in aesthetics.

People asked me if I’m angry or honored. Neither, on the one hand, I am glad that Rosas danst Rosas can perhaps reach a mass audience which such a dance performance could never achieve, despite its popularity in the dance world since 1980s. And, Beyoncé is not the worst copycat, she sings and dances very well, and she has a good taste!

On the other hand, there are protocols and consequences to such actions, and I can’t imagine she and her team are not aware of it. To conclude, this event didn’t make me angry, on the contrary, it made me think a few things.

Like, why does it take popular culture thirty years to recognize an experimental work of dance? A few months ago, I saw on YouTube a clip where schoolgirls in Flanders are dancing Rosas danst Rosas to the music of Like a Virgin by Madonna. And that was touching to see. But with global pop culture it is different, does this mean that thirty years is the time that it takes to recycle non-mainstream experimental performance?

And, what does it say about the work of Rosas danst Rosas? In the 1980s, this was seen as a statement of girl power, based on assuming a feminine stance on sexual expression. I was often asked then if it was feminist. Now that I see Beyonce dancing it, I find it pleasant but I don’t see any edge to it. It’s seductive in an entertaining consumerist way. Beyond resemblance there is also one funny coincidence. Everyone told me, she is dancing and she is four months pregnant. In 1996, when De Mey‘s film was made, I was also pregnant with my second child. So, today, I can only wish her the same joy that my daughter brought me."

Weigh in on your thoughts. What do you think of this news?

Let's start with Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker's own question. "Why does it take popular culture thirty years to recognize an experimental work of dance?" What can we do to improve this?

Are artists like Beyonce hungry to discover more about dance? I think so. She clearly felt inspired by these films. I also think the public is hungry for more, beyond television competitions, as ratings for these shows are decreasing, but viewing videos online continues to increase.

And what about copyright issues for both dancers and musicians? How do we address this adequately with the rise in low budget videos released daily on video platforms, like YouTube?

For me, I see this as a learning opportunity for all artists. As seen with many web dances, and predominately with hip hop styles, dancers are use popular music tracks for performances and for creating short films.

As it is common for dancers to use music to create a variety of works, several videos posted online have not known how to handle the copyright issues. Some never include this information, while others promote their dance videos by including the music artist in the title of the video. Because music has been deleted from videos by YouTube, as a way to address this issue, dancers have learned to mention copyright concerns, and credit the artists and music they use for their videos.

Many dance videos include information that reads as follows:
I DO NOT OWN THE RIGHTS TO THIS MUSIC.
***NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED*** "This video uses copyrighted material in a manner that does not require approval of the copyright holder. It is a fair use under copyright law.
"quotation of excerpts in a review or criticism for purposes of illustration or comment; quotation of short passages in a scholarly or technical work, for illustration or clarification of the author's observations; use in a parody of some of the content of the work parodied; summary of an address or article, with brief quotations, in a news report; reproduction by a library of a portion of a work to replace part of a damaged copy; reproduction by a teacher or student of a small part of a work to illustrate a lesson; reproduction of a work in legislative or judicial proceedings or reports; incidental and fortuitous reproduction, in a newsreel or broadcast, of a work located in the scene of an event being reported."

In addition, it is commonplace for dancers to share their sources of inspiration to present their work, including why a piece of music was chosen or used.   This is not always the case for musicians and their songs.

It appears that musicians can be equally inspired by dance and choreography to create music videos. Would it help to learn how and why Beyonce or her team were inspired by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker's works? It certainly wouldn't hurt.

Do I think that Beyonce should credit Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker in her music video? Of course! It would help the millions of viewers discover a deeper view of the arts and their creators.

What is the best way to support this need for recognition of artists going forward? For example, can YouTube recognize choreography that is being duplicated as well as it can recognize music? I think not. How can the dance community help in this regard? We won't always be able to hear the feedback from artists such as Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, to learn who's choreography is being used, and a breakdown of what's different from the original work. More discussion is needed in these areas to build awareness and appreciation by the public.

I believe that artists can play important roles in educating others about dance. I look forward to the influence they will have on educating the public about their own works, and those of others.

disciplines and its consistent approach to providing the public with an inclusive
opportunity to experience action, S.L.A.M. is presenting its 1st Annual Motion In
Media Festival.

The common thread with each piece being Action as the catalyst to the visual experience.

Following Elizabeth Streb’s design of action specialists, and visually compelling performances, these films exhibit the stunning combination of cinematography and photography with a masterful command of their movement discipline creating a hybrid manifestation of Action and Artistry.

Friday March 18th 2011 will be the unveiling of such compelling works, taking place
at the Streb Lab for Action Mechanics from 7pm-9pm.

Presenting Films:

"Flying Lesson" by Rosanee Chamecki, Andrea Lerner and Phil Harder,

"Distal Ends" by Courtney Giannone,

"Snap" by Andrea Gise, and

"The Wait of Gravity" by Renata Sheppard and Paolo Armao of Italy.

We will screen an experimental visual project by Uys Du Buisson and Cory Antiel,

a work in progress by Millie Li, and

a feature Length Documentary by Kevin Flint about one man’s desire
to become a professional aerialist, who at 37 quits his job to follow his dream to
become a member of Cirque Du Soleil.

After the screening another innovation takes place, The Streb Lab for Action
Mechanics will then allow attendees of the festival a chance to produce their own
action event.

An audience inclusive will take place from 9pm-10pm allowing
attendees the opportunity to learn Pop Action, the technique created by Elizabeth
Streb, to Fly Trapeze and to get lessons on the Trampoline.

With these great film submissions and audience inclusive, The Motion In Media
Festival will forever by defined by its no boundary approach to movement,
accepting all disciplines of action and all genres of Visual art & Filmmaking.

A look at how social media is shaping and fueling the international Brazilian Zouk dance phenomenon and other aspects of the dance world including Dance Parade, the largest dance event in North America, and DancePedia, an online encyclopedia dedicated to the subject of dance. This event will include a panel discussion, a live demonstration of Brazilian Zouk dancing along with a free dance lesson for those who want to get their feet wet and find out first hand why this dance has been called "the sexiest dance in the world." Afterward, there will be a Brazilian dance party. So come drink and dance the night away.

Panelists Include:

Nicholas Bambo is a marketing and social media strategist and the founder and creative director of Zouk Nation (www.zouknation.net). He has been actively involved in promoting the Brazilian Zouk dance scene in the U.S., creating some of the largest dance events in the States and working with a long list of dance instructors and recording artists from overseas. He is also the one time founder and artistic director of the Dark Horse Theater Group in Kyoto, Japan and the executive producer of Scene of the Crime, an upcoming web series about crime/mystery novelists set to debut in the spring.

Greg Miller: Having worked 18 years in management for Blue Chip companies, Greg Miller has been serving the public sector since creating Dance Parade Inc in 2006 (danceparade.org). DPI has gone on to become a non-profit, serving New York with its annual Dance Parade and Festival that celebrates over 100 styles of dance. Greg also serves as the Executive Director at OurMed.Org, an online Healthcare Information Site.

Dawn Paap is an advocate for dancers, choreographers, and video artists. She supports the artistic development, marketing, and distribution efforts of dance media artists who create dance for the camera. Dawn has worked as a Dance Media Consultant, and has been actively involved in promoting dance through video. Dawn's Video Dance Channel (youtube.com/VideoDanceTV), broadcasts daily dance videos and celebrates the diversity of dance styles and artistic videos. Dawn is building on these efforts to create an online Dance Education Series.

Richard Knipel is President of the Wikimedia NYC chapter and a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador to NYU. He has been active in the Wikimedia movement since 2004, with a special emphasis on outreach to local libraries, museums, academia and nonprofits, including dance groups and the DancePedia project

Amber Henrie is an independent media relations consultant with considerable experience in arts, entertainment, advertising, consumer electronics and technology industries. She has consistently worked in an entrepreneurial environment - coordinating and developing branding and media outreach initiatives with companies and non-profits. Her media relationships with reporters and bloggers span the globe in Dubai, London, Canada and the U.S. Amber began her career teaching ballroom dance professionally in New York City and became involved with various community and public affairs initiatives, before transitioning into a career in public relations.

Famous choreographers continue to develop award winning dance film documentaries, performances, and artistic cinedances. Budgets and talent allow professional dancers and choreographers to develop feature length films that can be shown in movie theatres, tour at major festivals, and win awards within the film and art communities. Other artists with smaller budgets, shorter films, and smaller groups of talent have begun to develop a multitude of Videodances for the Web.

Videodance is the contemporary term for the genre of dance made for the camera.
