Trine: Three's Company Review

Have you heard of Trine? If you haven’t it’s a puzzle/platformer game for the PS3 and PC. Like Shadow Complex it uses 3D characters and landscape but limits gameplay to a 2D plane. This can sometimes become confusing but you quickly adjust to the format.

Trine is absolutely beautiful, its lavish environments reminds me of the game Folklore sometimes. The combination of very vivid and bright colors and expressive lighting makes the settings they choose very attractive to play in.

What also makes it attractive to play is the ability to use 3 different characters as one. You are a wizard, thief and warrior all at time same time and can use each character’s ability to solve puzzles and progress through the level. You also use these same abilities to acquire green flasks that represent experience points allowing each character to get stronger/level up. As each character levels they can hone their skills making them more effective when completing challenges.

Throughout the levels there are checkpoint points so if perhaps one or all your characters die you can go back to that spot to revive them. If your wondering how your characters could die, there are plenty of ways such as falling off cliffs, drowning, getting hit by objects, or killed by enemies don’t forget this is a platformer as well. Checkpoints also serve as a place to replenish some of your hp or your wizard’s mp if you run out. There are other ways to do this such as killing enemies, they occasionally drop hp and mp flasks as well as give experience points.

There is no formula on how to use each characters abilities to solve the puzzle its whatever gets the job done. The wizard has no fighting abilities but can levitate and make items to help solve challenges. The thief; a female character as I would like to note, can shoot a bow and arrow and use a grappling hook. I like the thief being a woman because it breaks up the monotony of having an all male cast. I also liked that she is fully clothed and not used as a sexual ploy to attract buyers. Lastly, the knight is just what he is a knight and has a sword and shield to prove it.

Together these 3 make for a fun gaming experience but like everything there are always some flaws. My biggest pet peeve is the controls. I feel like they are not intuitive enough. To switch between characters you can press L1 or R1 and I do not like that.

One because usually action buttons are assigned to L1 or R1 and switching characters is not major enough. Instead of L1 or R1 I think it should have been L2 and R2. So then you can use those buttons for actions like when the wizard needs to draw to make an object, you would hold down L1 or R1 and draw with the right joystick. I found when in a rush to switch characters I always pressed L2 or R2 first and when I wanted to do an action I pressed L1 or R1 which was frustrating.

What is also frustrating is holding down on the right stick to block when using the knight. Everyone should know its either back or R1 to block simple. The thief control scheme is ok but I do which I had more control while aiming with her arrows. So currently its hold the right stick in any direction and let go to fire. I would have preferred hold the right stick and press R1 to fire. Therefore I am aiming and releasing when I want more precisely.

Another small pet peeve of mine is the story. It could be 10 times more engrossing and its not. It feels like they banked a lot on the gameplay being the seller which it is but there is supposely a story there. I feel it could have been more interesting or told in a more engrossing way to actually make me care.

So overall I like Trine alot and if you have a ps3 you should get it off the psn store immediately. It is definetely not a waste of your time. Perfect game to pick up during your Modern Warfare downtime because if you didn't know just like the famous tv show said Three's Company too.

Gears of War 2: Why the hate?

About 2 years ago everywhere I turned I would see someone raving about Gears of War. Even while I was finishing my last year of Grad school my 3D Professor made it a point to ask who had played it, and how he loved it. So why so much hate towards Gears of War 2?

I played and completed it in Coop mode; I completed its new Horde mode and loved it. For me a girl who hated shooters to begin with that’s a huge achievement. So why the hate?! Why do I hear so many complaints about such an awesome game? Why all the bitterness my friends? Where did all the love go?

Gears of War 2 is a game that is easy to pick up an play. The ability to use objects as cover without manually having the do it is a key part to its accessibility. Another thing that’s makes it great is its storyline which I was able to jump right into even though I never touched its predecessor. The campaign was fun especially in coop mode and equally challenging.

The worst part of Gears of War 2 is some of the multiplayer modes such as warzone or execution mode. They just aren’t on the level of enjoyment and satisfaction of other multiplayer modes in big name shooters, and more or less leave you feeling frustration rather than enjoyment. Horde is the best multiplayer mode in Gears, it offers challenge and variety to what is an already saturated genre.

When complaining about Gears have some concrete issues. Don’t just say it’s boring, that’s vague and it can’t be any more boring than other shooters, where you are doing the same thing….shooting. Don’t say there is nothing original about it, I turned on God of War: Chains of Olympus today and was struggling to determine who copied off each other first, Devil May Cry or them. No one is completely original anymore; I thought the saying was if its not broken don’t try to fix it, or no need to reinvent the wheel.

A few original things about Gears is the massively dark and detailed environments, the fact that you can chainsaw enemies with your lancer and enjoy doing it, and its reload system which gives you an advantage on the battlefield if used right. A lot of what makes Gears good is the overall satisfaction you as a player recieve just playing the game and that’s what great games are suppose to be about.

So please stop hating just to be a hater and give the developers some credit where its deserved. It’s truly an Epic game.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2

Sooooo, its September and back to school kiddies.......
-_- including me....how sad...
But besides that point there are some cool games coming out.
I don't feel like going into them, we all know Halo 3 will launch on September 25 no need for me to reiterate that especially since I don't play it O_O!

So good luck Halo lovers...please don't flunk the fall semester XD!

The game I will talk about ..... you guessed it Monster Hunter Freedom 2.

Maybe it is because I have never played this game before or I just suck but it makes me wanna kill myself. I now understand after playing it on my PSP why it got very mixed reviews in EGM (Electronic Gaming Monthy Magazine)

This game is awesome in its own right and then totally sucks in another.

Lets talk about why it is awesome.

First, there is the fact that you can have a multi player experience of up to 4 people defeating monsters. Did I mention the game is about killing Monsters >.> hence the name monster hunter....Elementary people.....Elementary...

When you kill monsters you can carve them and get awesome items to help you make better armor or sell to get more money.

You can also search for items around the map to either sell or combine to make better things.

The character designs are awesome as well, the armor you get to make looks great.

Graphics for this game are beautiful.

You can join guilds with your friends, even design your own guild card.

You can raise your Hunter Rank by completing quests

You get to choose from a lot of different weapon types to fight with some examples are:
My favorite Dual Swords, then Hammer, Great Sword, Gunner, Archer etc.

WHAT SUCKS THEN YOU ASK???!!!

Yes I love that I can play with my friends thus is why I brought this game, they are ALL FIENDS I SAY! <.< But what about my single player experience? I can't complete not one mission alone in this game. I have to rely on my friends to get me through the missions and its not like you can play over a wireless connection. The connection you need has to be ad hoc..meaning I need to be in the same freakin room as the next person to play with them. Making this game to me instantly dead. I was all excited about the experience I would have alone and with my friends and had my dreams crushed by the overwhelming difficulty.

Granted I just might really suck, but I have heard veteran players tell me this game is hard to play by yourself. It disgusted me when there seemed to be no difference in the difficulty level for Hunter Rank 1 mission vs a Hunter Rank 2. Thus my critique is they should have thought more outside the box when designing for a portable device and not allowing players to succeed in much alone other than preparing your armor, farming and completing training missions.

Overall, if you have a lot of friends and have the time to play I would recommend this game to you. It has a lot of strategic elements that make the game fun and interesting to play, within a team. If you are always busy and don't have much time to play other than on the train to school or work I suggest you go buy lumines XD!

E3 Extravaganza

So E3 has come and gone. If you were to busy at work to watch any of the presentations ...I feel sorry for you....sooooo......I will fill you in on some events that interested me. XD!

Nintendo seems to be going a wii crazy for the wii ...... XD!

A new wii wheel will be coming out to accompany their new mario cart that apparently will have online capabilities. Yes Mario Cart lovers are dying and going to heaven all over the world.

If you are a wii bit out of shape....Yes I know it is cheesy but...thus my point...o_o......Don't worry you can get wii fit...with the new wii stepper. This will also be accompanied with an aerobic routine in the form of a game.

Of course the new smash brothers brawl was a beautiful highlight to the presentation. It looks awesome and I can't wait for it to come out so I can get owned......

Sorry X-box 360 lovers I didn't get a chance to watch their presentation.
I do know that they recently announced at least on their site, that due to it seems many complaints and many problems people where having with the system, such as the red light blinking around the power button problem. They are now increasing the warranties of X-box 360 owners from 1 year to 3 years and also planning to refund anyone who paid out of pocket money to get the problem fixed...... Smart Move.....

So as you can see cool games right...... now the kick...stupid system......

Playstation announced that they will be dropping the price of the 60G to 499. YAY YAY YAY!! Right?...Wrong.... Apparently, they are phasing this system out...so as soon as this particular system is out of stock you won't see it anymore. Then they will be coming out with the 80G version and jacking the price right back up to 599. Here is the kick....it won't be backwards compatible..... -_-....Don't you love it people.....

Lastly, Playstation also announced that the psp will have two new versions out for 169.00. One that is in silver and one that is white with the darth vader logo on the back. It will also be lighter and thinner. There are also some other features added but nothing that I thought was of any relevance so I didn't pay much attention to that crap. I was happy with these cool changes but alittle pissed to have gotten a psp recently for my birthday and then have to deal with the fact that now a silver one will be available for the same price. All I can say is bite me sony.....bite me -_-....

Yes, I know I am particularly late with my post this month, but I have good reason. I wanted this post to coincide with my podcast project for school.

Originally, this podcast was going to be about the history of handheld gaming, but at the last minute I decided to do my podcast on Digital Life. Digital Life was a technology convention being held in New York City last week, from October 12 -15 2006.

BREAK OUT THE CASH O_O!!!

BREAK OUT THE CASH PEOPLE BECAUSE ACCORDING TO ELECTRONIC GAMING MAG...

PS3 will launch on Nov 17, 2006

For a whooping $599 for the 60 gig version and $499 for the 20 gig hardrive version. (Yes, Like XBox360 they decided to have two)

Why so damn expensive you ask?

Because they have included a Blu-ray Dvd player within every system, which apparently on the market right now runs for more than 1,000 dollars o_o...........
So even though it is still a pretty penny for the PS3 it is surprisingly cheap............ *starts to cry*

Unfortunately for us broke people like me that really doesn't mean doo-doo >.<;;;;;

There are a couple of other differences other then the price you should know about for the two versions. Like the more expensive comes with an HDMI connection for high def tv's and a memory stick/SD Compact Flash slots that are used for multimedia functions. Other information says that sony will be offering a robust online service similar to Xbox Live...only difference is....... it will be FREE o_O!!! Yay! <.<>.<;;;;; *runs and hides*

Then lastly we have the infamous PS Controller =O! Which to everyones shock the vibration in the controller seems to be obsolete this time around. Sony claims that inorder to incorporate their new motion sensor which allows you to move the control and have your movement registered in the game they had to take the vibration function out.

Some disagree with that statement arguing Sony took the function out because of a lawsuit filed against them by the company which created the vibration function, Immersion. Also interesting, the new motion sensor will not be nearly as indepth as Nintendo's new Wii controller which I believes allows your movement to register from every direction, PS3 will only allow you to move side to side something along the lines of that. Just know it won't be nearly as extensive.

Yep! School has started but I am finally back... I didn't want to break my promise to keep my blog going. I was so happy to see I actually had some nice comments thanks to all ^_^!! That makes it even more worthwhile thanks again. XD!!!

NOW ON TO THE TOPIC OF THE DAY =OO!!!

GAMES YOU NEED TO GET =OO!!!

1. YAKUZA !!!!!!!!!

I so want this game why O_O because it is soooooo coolz.........

Ever want to be a gangster......better yet ever want to be a japanese gangster O_O!!! Then you have to get Yakuza coming out September 5 or 8 >.<;;;;; (conflicting dates from Playstation Mag and Game Informer Mag) According to reviews Yakuza is a harsher version of Shenmue or a GTA set in Toyko. You have a main objective but you also can wander around the city and do random things. Example, buy things from vending machines, stores, go to hostess bars and more. You'll get into street fights ranging from rival Yakuza clan members to angry hobos. This is just the tip of the iceburg, you'll even have to buy gifts for your girlfriends guys XD!!! 2. FINAL FANTASY XII

Okz.. I admit at first look at this game...even though I am a diehard fan of Final Fantasy I did not want it. After reading a full review of it in Playstation August Mag I had a change of heart. Even though it sports a much serious storyline than our previous final fantasy's and personally even though the graphics are awesome in there own right the look bothers me especially the lifeless hair.

Honestly though, I have to admit there really is a reason to purchase this game.

Firstly, the set main character bit that has always been a part of Final Fantasy has taken a back seat in this one. You can decide which character you want to be your main character and not the default character whose name is Vaan. Ok... did I mention the freakin awesome looking summons, if I remember correctly they brought back summons sampling around in the vast Final Fantasy Series. So you diehard fans might remember them and be really hyped or if your not that diehard but played a couple of the Fantasies you will still be hyped because they look so great and I am sure are equally great in battle.

Honestly, I can't believe how much I can talk about this game considering my pure hatred for it when I saw the trailer, but playstation mag really did a great and indepth article about this game and I really think it is worth checking out for all you die hard RPGers ^_^!!

By the way did I mention this Final Fantasy XII has NO RANDOM BATTLE =OOO!!!! *ALL RPGers DIE* LOL! Only Kidding!!! Also it sports a new flexible combat system =OO!!!!

Unfortunately do to a ridiculious amount of work from grad school. I will only be able to post on the weekends at least until the end of August. >.<;; Yea I know that sucks. Well, I will try to make up for it by posting alot more info then usual . I just got my August mags, like game informer, Playstation and Electronic Games and have come across some interesting stuff I am eager to share.

Megumi's Top 10 E3 Games

So E3 came and went but the hype is still around.... I can't wait for the new systems although I certainly haven't got enough of my PS2 yet but that is another topic waiting to be addressed.
Today's topic is the top 10 games of E3.... or well my top picks..... who cares? <.<

1. Assassin's Creed

This game immediately caught my interest because for some reason or another I have an interest in assassins. Not that I want to be one but they always make a story so freakin interesting. So when I saw a game online at one of the many sites publishing info on E3 called like assassin's creed, I was in shock. I had to find out if the game was actually related to its name or just a marketing stunt. Happily, I was relieved to read that the game actually would be related to its title and decided to watch the trailers. I was totally amazed at what I saw. If the graphics in real-time gaming are as they were in the trailer I think I am gonna die. I happened to also watch this trailer with one of my friends and he felt the same way commenting on how real the bird in the trailer looked. The trailer was very cinematic and very photoreal, it pulled me right in and had an awesome feel to it. This game seems like it is gonna be killer. XD! 2. Final Fantasy XIII

Yes, I know all you Final Fantasy haters out there, unfortunately I love Final Fantasy.I am surprised at myself that this game wasn't number one on my list. I don't know if you noticed but I have a soft spot for great graphics and needless to say the Final Fantasy XIII trailer was quite drool worthy :L<----droolz. I saw a screenshot of the game which included the menu bar and the menu bar alone made me want to buy a PS3. lolz Seriously, it lookz freakin great. I am happy the creators decided to go back to the futuristic look because I wasn't really feeling FFXII, it looked way too traditional or whatever you want to call it, it just didn't make me want to play it at all. Although the graphics were very photoreal, they look somewhat weird in FFXII , in my opinion. Final Fantasy XIII seems like it is going back to how the game should be and I am looking forward to getting my copy as soon as it hits the shelves. BEST GAME FOR X-BOX 360?

Here is something you die heart fans of the X-Box 360 can scream and rave about!! I am looking for opinions on the best game for the X-Box 360 since its launch. Leave me a comment and let me know what you think. Personally, I am not a fan of X-Box, but I still would like to know what games they have that the gaming world consider the best ...other than halo -_-........... It is just my luck though since Halo wasn't a launch title I don't have to hear about it XD!!!

NEW SUPER MARIO BROS

Starting off my Game of the Month series is the hot game for Nintendo DS New Super Mario Bros. ^_^ Yay! Watching the commerical for this game alone made me want to jump and go buy a DS Lite instantly. If it weren't for the fact that I am penniless at the moment due to being jobless, and in school, I would definetely have one right now. It is amazing how Nintendo manages to reinvent a game that you think you would be tired of by now, and recapture our interest all over again. This game looks awesome I can't wait to play it !!

THE FACTS

New Super Mario Bros was released on May 15, 2006 it is a 1-player/2-player via wireless platform game. It is published and developed by Nintendo and had an ESRB rating of E for Everyone!!! There are some new moves in the game and also some new mushrooms. The most notable mushroom is the one seen in the commerical which makes you a giant. Allowing you to smash and walk through just about anything in your way. Interestingly there is a mushroom that does exactly the opposite, making you shrink. Allowing you to access hidden areas, and special pipes. The graphics are vivid and colorful, and has improved animation.
New Super Mario Bros is said to have sold 500,000 copies in only 35 days!!
