Finding the reason to go out and create something awesome can kind of be a daunting task, what with our real life jobs that pay, families, school, responsibilities and everything else in the world that might make you hold back from taking that jump into head-on, gung-ho creativity mode. But sometimes all we need is a little incentive. There are hundreds upon hundreds of contests going on all the time, some might pay in gift cards, free gear, or quite possibly cash… either way, it is going to prompt you to get out there and get creative, make something sweet, and feel good about it too. We are going to look at a few sites that I watch, just to stay on the up-and-up in the contest world, in case there is something I might want to take a go at.

Nick Campbell’s Five Second Projects (website under construction go here for the latest) has gained a lot of steam in the last few months, with VideoHive actually sponsoring one of the contests, and with other sponsors such as Imagineer Systems, this is sure to be a hit in the motion graphics and 3d scene alike. What this contest does is give you 5 seconds and a theme. Based upon that theme, you can create whatever your mind desires, and the best entry wins! This is great for beginners, because not only does it take a minimal amount on your part, it gives you something to add to your demo reel every few weeks, and you can grab some sweet products, and other prizes such as Nick’s Photoshop training, which I am sure is going to pop up as a prize somewhere down the line.

Vidopp is quite possibly one the foremost central hubs to go to for up to date lists of contests and their details. It seems like every day there is something new added, because they have made themselves known in the contest community as the place to be posted if you want exposure. They provide all the details, search options on how much the prizes pay out, whether they award cash or prizes, and age limitations. They really make it easy to find what you want, and filter out the contests you may not be eligible to enter.

Poptent is a service in which they scout out potential large scale advertisers like Bud Light or 100 Grand, and create a contest for the brand to pick the best made commercial. Not only is this a way to have your work nationally seen, but also have a client list of huge name brands. The host company gives all the assets, the project breakdown, theme, catchphrases and anything else that might need to be included in the final spot, and let’s your creative mind go to work. Upload your final video, and if it is the winner… you could win a ton of cash!

Ahhh, good old Youtube. You all have probably seen the random contests or promoted videos on the front page, but did you know there is actually a section of Youtube devoted to contests? Instead of randomly stumbling upon a contest you might want to participate in, you can bookmark the Contest Category of Youtube and watch all the current contest, check out the prizes and see if it’s worth your time. The bad thing about the contests on Youtube is they are absolutely flooded with entries from all around the world, so your chances go down to win, versus if you were to enter something from Vidopp or Poptent.

Now for you 3d artists out there… CGSociety.com has some pretty intense challenges with huge sponsors, and even huger prizes. The last theme was “Secret Agent” ending in September, but the winner ended up winning a BOXX system, Wacom Tablet, choice of Software, copies of Modo, Vue, Corel Painter, and year memberships to some awesome magazines and CGSociety itself. If that doesn’t prompt you to enter I don’t know what will. You have to work within the specific guidelines and apps for the challenge, but this is a great way to build your 3d artwork profile as well.

So there you have it everyone! You want a reason to get out and crush it? Well, now you got one… well… 5… or more. Anyways, if you have participated in any challenges from any of these sites, I would love to see your work or hear your stories… and if you won, well tell everyone else that it’s possible and to get out there and start making some amazing work, and make your work, work for you!

I am just sitting here enjoying my morning 16 oz home brewed mocha when I see @ninjacrayon (Ko Maruyama) tweet that Wondertouch has just been acquired by GenArts, the creators of the Sapphire plugins! First thought… “well I am happy for Alan Lorence”, second thought… “crap, is the price going to go up now?” Well, upon further investigation, no it won’t be and it seems as though Wondertouch and its babies, particleIllusion and particleIllusionAE are in very good hands and are set on a December release date this year.

So what does this actually mean? Well instead of the tiny company that Wondertouch is… made up of Alan Lorence, the founder of Wondertouch, and a few other people, the fate of particleIllusion and particleIllusionAE (I’m going to refer to these as pI and pIAE from now on) are in very good hands, and are hopefully going to gain much more steam and reach a wider variety of platforms in the coming years.

If you haven’t heard of pI before, it is a standalone application for creating amazingly intricate particle systems using custom emitters that you can build yourself, or choose from the thousands in the existing pI library. Over the years, Alan Lorence has created emitters that resemble realistic fire, smoke, liquid, utilizing 3d objects, and a vast amount of other fantastic looking emitters. The best thing about this product, is every month there is a new emitter library released, resulting in over 2600 emitters total over the life of the product! Up until this coming December the only product available has been pI 3.0 which is a fantastic product, and you have probably seen its emitters in quite a few movies and TV shows. Now, in December with Genarts heading the company and Alan on as a full-time developer, they are full scale ready for the release of pIAE which is about 3 years in the making, and is going to be well worth the wait.

Whats the benefit of GenArts owning Wondertouch… at least for us? Well, GenArts is proven to be an amazing company, with their plugin packages such as Sapphire available for platforms such as Adobe, Apple, Avid, Autodesk, Assimilate, Eyeon, FilmLight, The Foundry, Quantel and SGO, we can only hope that pI will make it’s way to those platforms as well. Not only the possibility of having pI available on a wider range of platforms, but now there is a team like GenArts backing the product (this is guesswork, because I don’t know what the development structure looks like), but we can expect there to be a ton of support, tutorials, even more emitter libraries, and perhaps training in the future. Whenever a company buys another smaller company, there seems to be some revamping happening, and it is never a bad thing for change that moves a product forward.

As for pIAE, it’s scheduled release for December 2009 is still on track, and will be available for After Effects only, and will not yet work with other Adobe programs utilizing the AEX plugins extensions like Premiere… YET. The product is going to be $299, but only $179 if you already have a copy of pI 3.0 standalone. The only bad thing about pIAE 1.0 is it “won’t give you access to the “lower level” parameters like particle color gradients, size over life graphs, particle images, particle image reference point location, initial particle angle — the things that are in the various pages of the emitter properties dialog in pI3. Forces and deflectors will not be present in version 1.0. Also, because of the number of parameters that each emitter adds, there may be some limit to the number of emitters that you can add to a project.” (taken from Wondertouch’s website). With the acquirement like I said, is we are hoping to see an updated version soon after the release, as well as emitter libraries geared towards us that want to work solely in After Effects.

All in all, the acquirement is a big deal, and a huge step in the right direction for Wondertouch and Alan Lorence’s products as a whole. If you want to brush up on how to use pI 3.0 you can check out a few training DVDs that are out there, Elvis Deane’s two titles (a little older, but still pertain to 3.0) The Apprentice Magician’s Guide to pI 3.0 & Cooking With pI – Video Recipes for Pixel Pyrotechnics. You can also check out the Press Release on Wondertouch’s Website, the official information page for pIAE, and the conference call below with GenArts CEO Katherine Hays and Wondertouch CEO Alan Lorence.

Yes, you heard me right folks! The two teams behind VideoHive and After Effects marketplace Rerendered.com have decided to join forces. We have combined our inventory, providing you quick access to content from two of the leading sites in the AE Project Files game! The merge brings hundreds of new project files, many of which are already migrated over into our Project Files category. With our powers combined we are continuing to make VideoHive THE marketplace for Adobe After Effects!

What This Means For You!

By merging sites we’re combining our inventories. This means you visit one site, from one account and have access to all of the great files from both sites. Alongside the file migration, we’ve also bought over new authors and buyers to join our community! Of course with a larger author base brings more file submissions, so you’ll have more frequent submissions and more of a variety to look through when searching for that perfect project to suit your needs.

Some Insight

I was able to sit down and have a chat with Justin McClure (one of the masterminds behind the creation of Rerendered) about his thoughts regarding the merger, and the future of VideoHive.

Q. Tell us a little bit about why you got started in video?

A: When I was 12 years old my brother and I would borrow my parents (then state-of-the-art) VHS video camera and create short films which were entirely edited in camera WITH music being pumped through a tape walk-man that was duct taped to the microphone. Yep, that is where it all started. My true passion developed later in college with my first After Effects 4.0 course. I was a Design major, but at Fort Hays State University you were required to have a final portfolio on an interactive CD. So along with learning programs like Director and InfiniD, After Effects for the animation and interactive components was essential. I was hooked. I mean, come on… Photoshop in motion? I was in love.

Q. Why After Effects, and why not a different software package?

A: I have never been opposed to trying new things. When Motion first came out I must of gave it a good full month of test driving, because I was sure that it was the next big thing. I also bought Shake when it first came out, I knew it wasn’t really motion graphics driven, but I wanted to have multiple tools for different needs. In the end, After Effects was just so easy to use and robust, it was really the only tool I needed.

Q. Are you a Mac or a PC? Any specific reasoning?

A: I am totally a MAC snob. I don’t have an apple sticker on my F-150 anywhere, but I can’t even begin to figure out how to adjust the volume on a PC. MAC is all that I have ever known, even since the days of Lemon-aid Stand and Oregon Trail… I realize I just hit a soft spot with a certain age group.

Q. We all love to hear each other’s war stories. Got any great horror jobs?

A: Not so much a war story, but my first week at CMT was a rough one. I was given a very small introductory project, I was to develop and animated a logo for a 5 sec open that would be on CMT.com. So I of course started where I always start, sketching and filtering through my available fonts. For some ungodly reason, Extensis Suitcase was giving me huge headaches. I think because CMT has a trillion fonts first of all, and secondly because I was of course like a kid in a candy store activating all of the cool new ones I had never seen before. Reggie, our groups IT guy, took a look and seemed to fix the issues I was having, but I was left with zero fonts activated… got to have at least the basic ones right? Anyway, at some point while activating, waiting, watching pin wheel, activating, waiting, watching pin wheel, I mistakenly ‘Activated All Fonts’ bringing the already slooow G5 to a screeching crawl and the issue that had been fixed was back again and I was too embarrassed to tell anyone. My Art Director at the time, Amie Nguyen, somehow without fail only walked by my workstation while I had my hands over my mouth, staring at my fonts with the pinwheel rotating. Gut wrenching and nerve racking experience, I was already the newbie treading water in the deep end of the pool and I thought for sure I was going to get fired before I even finished my first project. I hope Amie reads this, because I’m pretty sure even to this day, she thinks I have some kind of weird font fetish.

Q. You’ve worked with some amazing clients, such as the Discovery Channel and Dell. What’s been your experience working with such large clients, and what’s the project you’re most proud of.

A: I have had the opportunity to work with a large range of clients, some big and some small, but the recipe to do great work is the same every time. There maybe a few more pages in the branding guidelines and a couple more levels of reviews for the bigger fish, but that is to be expected. All in all, the process remains the same. I think I am most proud of the CMT Coyote Ugly show package, It was my first big solo project at CMT and I was able to get my hands dirty from start to finish. Directing the green screen shoot wasn’t so bad either.

Q. Can you tell us why you decided to launch Rerendered?

A: Rerendered started out as my personal library of experimental After Effects tests and cutting room floor materials. It certainly didn’t start out as a marketplace, it was simply an online location to keep my files available for download, instead of being scattered across multiple hard drives at home, work and in between. My friend, and later business partner, Larry Penrod, who at the time was helping me set up the site, had asked me if it maybe worth including other After Effects artists and also selling the files. We agreed to try it, but also agreed it should to be more like a garage sale and less of a corporate type of site. It was meant for AE artists to download and share files, very simple files, files that could save an hour perhaps and other files just to inspire creative things a third party plugin could do.

Q. What makes you feel that Rerendered is a good fit with VideoHive?

A: I think Rerendered is a great fit for VideoHive, because it fills a void. Most of the files you find on the current site are much more elaborate files that a producer might be more inclined to purchase as opposed to an After Effects artist. Having these types of smaller presets and pre-comp type files allows AE artists another outlet. Artist such as myself are not looking for, “replace photo & type here” plug and render types of files. But, I am however searching for little nuggets that I can change and alter very quickly and then sprinkle into a commercial or promo. Items such as trees and birds, simple little particular effects for a quick transition and so on and so forth. I am really excited for more of these types of files to start showing up, and I am looking forward to downloading them.

Q. In your opinion, what are the advantages that come with using stock motion graphics?

A: Besides the advantages I listed above, I would say the other big advantage, is introducing different styles and elements to your work. Of course they are also great time savers as well. One of the most creative things i have been exposed to while working in this field, is collaborating with multiple artists on a single project. I have always grown creatively every time, with no exceptions. Whether it is being exposed to a different way of animating or simply an introduction to a different style, I believe we all can grow from interacting with and learning from other artists and this can easily be achieved via stock items and the online community of VideoHive as easy as it can be from working with another artist sitting right next to you.

Q. Tell us a bit about SqueezeMe.tv?

A: SqueezeMe.tv (link: http://squeezeme.tv/) started out as another internal idea actually. I wanted to create a home page that had nothing but the latest motion graphics industry’s news, highlights and tutorials all in one place. It is simply a one stop shop and I think if you are in to motion graphics or video at all, you will fall in love with it. Special thanks to Dominic Flask (link: www.dangerdom.com) and Jeff Lang for bringing it to life.

Q. Where do you see the industry going in the next ten years?

A: Without giving up my plot to rule the galaxy, here are a few things to be aware of. First off, there is a great new tool coming out soon called the internet. It will be amazing; you will be able to collaborate with people from around the world from the luxury of your very own home. All joking aside, most agencies and studios still are not utilizing this amazing tool, they simply don’t get it. They want to hire people in house and on site, and build with bricks and mortar. This method is on the brink of extinction, or at least a silent revolution. Times have changed, and a new trend has been set in motion and will remain to be the norm for the next 5 to 10 years. Everyone is looking for a bargain, including big businesses. I’m not saying you should lower your price tag, but you better be able to offer something new and have incentives for your customers. And if you are a big agency or studio you better be able to leverage your overhead, by hand picking temporary talent for each particular project as opposed to hiring someone full time with benefits that is mediocre because you think they can fill multiple rolls. You also might want to rethink those round trip plane tickets to Los Angles for your two creative directors, because you no longer need to be sitting right next to an editor, to be art directing. You no longer have to have everyone is the same building to collaborate effectively, you just need to have them on the same page.

Q. Do you have any advice for aspiring video artists?

A: Find something you love and then work your ass off owning it.

We couldn’t be more excited about the decision. We welcome the Rerendered team, authors, and buyers over to VideoHive. We’re looking forward to a long lasting relationship, and some really great files! Visit VideoHive now to check out the files that have already made it over, and be on the lookout in the coming weeks for a Best of Rerendered article highlighting some fantastic Rerendered files!

I am continually trying to pimp out my home office, in any which way I can (when my bank account permits), and there are just so many cool accents and gadgets that you can get nowadays to either bump up productivity, or possibly lessen it, but overall make your working environment a little more enjoyable. In this monthly Awesomeness for the Officeness series I will be showcasing some of the awesome stuff I find throughout the net, and stuff that you guys send me to spread the word to other fellow office nerds to decorate our sanctuaries.

Geek

This beauty debuted at CES 2008 and dear lord, I can’t wait to have one of these. The coverage came from Gizmodo, and apparently this monitor is lit by LEDs, has a resolution of 2880×900 and is over three feet wide! This could eliminate dual monitor setups, or perhaps become the new norm for us screen space whores. They aren’t yet for sale but can you imagine rocking two of these suckers with a 6 foot wide screen-span? You might have also seen NEC’s version of this, found here via Gizmodo for a spendy $7,999.

I already ended up spending around a hundred dollars on VGA, audio, and USB extender cables, when if I would have only known about this magical piece of equipment, it could have been so much easier. IOGear has this wireless kit that lets you plug a transmitter into a desktop or laptop and send the signal to a receiver that is hooked up to your TV and stereo system to allow you to work directly on your TV instead of routing cords all over your house. IOGear’s website has an awesome product tour and a price of $299, but you can get it on Amazon for a hundred bucks less.

I saw these covered on Attack of the Show the other day, and it pretty much blew my mind. It’s a fully wireless (except for the Powermat itself) charging station for things like iPhones, Blackberrys DSi’s and more. Upon further inspection, it is pretty well made, with adapters for all of today’s popular gadgets, magnetized alignment, a cool looking design and it even comes with fitted receiver cases. Check out the website for interactive tours and videos, otherwise they only run about $100, and you can pick them up at any Best Buy or Target store.

Visuals

DMO has a very cool product calle Flat Lighting… which is exactly that. They are lamps, but without the bulk, they are essentially flat pieces of wood or plastic that have embedded LEDs that light up the area around them. They might not be the most powerful lamp, but for a smaller office it could be quite the accent. Check out DMO’s website for details.

Personally I am not that huge of a fan of big ugly looking white boards, so why not switch it up a bit? Pottery Barn has a nice looking piece of frosted glass enclosed in a dark wooden frame that will look a lot better on you wall for those brainstorming sessions. You can grab it for $129.

Personally, I could never afford one of these clocks, but they are just really freaking cool. Boasting a steampunk-ish style it would look amazing in my office. They range from $100 – $500 depending on the style, but you are guaranteed to be the only one of your friends with one! Check out the site with a video showing what they look like with second-by-second changes.

Storage

Now almost everyone knows what Drobo is, and it is quickly becoming one of the most popular storage backup plans available on the market today. If you are one of the few that haven’t seen or heard of the Drobo, you need to head over to their site right now, and educate yourself. Drobo offers single, quad, and octo-enclosures for backing up your data on your computer with anywhere from one to eight disks at a time, depending on the enclosure using BeyondRAID technology. Not only are they heavily reliable, they look awesome as hell. They are a bit spendy, up to $1,500 for just the 8 disk enclosure, they are well worth it if you have sensitive data that you can’t afford to lose.

Forget about those 4 WD MyBooks you got laying around, grab one of these External USB SATA Drive Docks. You can hot swap your SATA drives on the fly, and connect this puppy via USA or eSATA for access just like you swap out your SD cards with your camera. This could be a perfect solution if you have a client with a ton of assets, quote them for a drive, go out and grab a 250GB drive and have that be for that job. Hot swap when you need it, and work directly off the drive, easy as pie… only $77.99.

So that’s it from me guys, let me know if you have any other gadgets or awesomeness laying around that you think should be in the next Awesomeness for the Officeness installment, and I’ll be sure to spread the word!

Nom Noms

Nothing says badass on a Monday morning like a pair of brass knuckles. Now think about that… but carrying a hazelnut latte. Yeah that’s what I thought. I found this beaut’ over on Design Spotter and you can pick it up for an easy £10.95.

Who doesn’t want a mini-fridge right in reaching distance? I mean, it’s hard enough to muster up the energy when you’re knee deep in editing mode, and you just need a soda that second. Well no fear! This thing holds 20 liters and even better yet, it not only cools to 44 degrees Fahrenheit, it can heat as well up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit! Its also got an LCD readout for the temp, and comes with a car adapter too! It’s everything I’ve ever wanted for under a hundred bucks!

Our “sister” site, AETuts+ has been hard at work the last month or so with the launch of Plus content to the site, more Plus tutorials, and just more content in general. If you haven’t been to AETuts+ yet, and you work in After Effects… well my friend, what are you waiting for? Get over there and check out the multitude of tutorials and articles loaded with inspiration (a lot by me, actually) to get your brain working.

Every couple weeks we will showcase the tutorials from the past weeks so you can brush up and hone your After Effects skills to learn some new tricks and broaden your horizons when it comes to our favorite application.

Map Your Destination in AE

You guys might know Jorrit Schulte from his work over at AEnhancers.com where he makes a ton of presets and custom effects… FOR FREE, mind you… but in this tutorial he shows you how to create a map of the world, and has an arrow jumping from continent to continent. Not only does this produce a handy little effect, he teaches you a bit about expression, motion paths, transfer modes and color correcting.

Realistic Sniper Scope

With one of the newer AE Plus tutorials on the website, Phil shows you some awesome techniques to use high resolution photos instead of footage to create an awesome looking sniper scope effects… and this isn’t just an overlay… no no no. This actually uses a bunch of expressions (simple ones, mind you) to make the scope’s view magnify and move around like your were searching for someone to gun down. Phil is also a great teacher, talking on camera himself, as well as explaining the theory behind some of the effects like chromatic aberration and focal distortion.

Exclusive Interview With Harry Frank

Satya Meka is one of the more prominent writers and tutorial hosts on AETuts+, and his work always seems to stand out. Jumping a bit out of the norm of things, Satya met up with Harry Frank, the founder of Graymachine of which I, like thousands of you, are huge fans of, and spoke with him about a variety of things from his past, his education, and what is to come in the future.

What’s The Difference?

The editor over at AETuts+ is Adam Everett Miller… he’s a good guy that really knows his stuff, so he put together this massively informative article to teach everyone what the differences are between different concepts and things used in After Effects. I learned a lot from this article like the difference between Custom Effects, Scripts, and Presets, or the difference between Effects and Filters. Even if you think you know all there is to be taken from After Effects, this is quite a good read, because you are bound to find something you didn’t already know.

Use Lights to Project Your Logo

A lot of people give flack when it comes to “copying” techniques that are used at popular sites like Video Copilot or Motionworks, but this isn’t one of those cases. As you can tell, I hound the comments section of AETuts+ and there was a like of crap being dealt, but I think that Eddie really put it out there with a great tutorial explaining light projection as well as using some interesting techniques with Trapcode Particular. Also if you are a fan of the CSTools from inside of Cinema 4D you will love the handy trick using DocuCam to get a handheld looking camera movement created in C4D and ported into After Effects.

40 Spectacular Typography Videos

Ahhh, my second home on the Envato network of sites. You guys have all probably seen my roundups on AETuts, but if you haven’t this article is a great starting point. I found a ton of typography-themed videos from the far reaches blogging universe, to bring you a massive roundup as the sequel to one of my earlier posts on the site entitled 17 Amazing Inspiration Typographic Videos. Enjoy yourself.

Get Your Disco Groove On

This tutorial actually shows yo that, with no matter what version of After Effects that you are running, you can still produce some amazing content. Ramesh is rocking what looks to be AE 6.5 with some Particular and Lux thrown into the mix to make an awesome looking disco scene. If you love written tutorials, then this will be great for you, but if not… give it a try… you will be surprised with the outcome… and I guarantee that you will learn a little something you didn’t know before.

So that’s it guys, the last two weeks over at AEtuts+. If you want access to these project files to experiment with, and full downloadable tutorials and materials that you check out the Plus Membership option available. On Plus you get exclusive access to tutorials like the Sniper Scope tutorial that other free users don’t and its $9 a month! Oh, and one more reason… you get access to PSDTuts+, NetTuts+, VectorTuts+ and all the other Plus content across the Tuts+ platform as well! So what are you waiting for… check it out!

News broke early last week at Adobe that After Effects CS5 is going to be 64-bit native, or in other words… you won’t be able to run the software on a computer running a 32-bit operating system. This might be good news for you, and it could potentially be bad news for you as well… either/or, we will cover the details after the jump, and analyze why Adobe has made this move heading into the future.

Even though this is going to mean me having to upgrade my workstation a couple thousand dollars or so, I couldn’t be happier about this decision. A big aspect that you might not think about, is that all the time that the AE team has been using to develop features for both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms, it has slowed them down in fixing, creating and addressing the issues that we want in our favorite software, because they have to develop two versions at a time. Now, with all the development being centered on a 64-bit native application, there isn’t time wasted on dual versions, and the developers can focus solely on improving our one version that we will be using from now on.

Secondly, RAM. Yes, the sticks that make After Effects buzz through its renders and RAM previews… now there is no limit, besides that of what your motherboard can take to what you can throw at AE to utilize. This is fantastic news, because that means longer RAM previews, faster rendering times, more efficient work flows using floating point color (32-bit color, or HDR imagery), and it is going to be way easier to work with HD footage.

Not only does using a 64-bit OS just work better overall, right off the bat you will see a 60% jump in speed and response time. That is huge. Pump a total of 8GB OR 16GB RAM in that sucker and you are going to see up to a potential 200% jump in overall speed of the program, not to mention working with footage like 4K RED video will be a breeze. Did you know that 4K is 35 times the resolution of SD footage? Try color grading and adding visual effects to a 4K shot on a 32-bit 4GB RAM system… (trust me it’s hard, that’s what I have…)

This is going to really jump start AE users to really take advantage of 64-bit OSes because, well… why not? CS5 is going to be blazing fast, and your work flow is going to greatly benefit from it. So here is the deal. If you bought your computer in the last 4 years, chances are you can run a 64-bit OS on it, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you can max your RAM to the point that it will make you happy. I checked my computer out today, and since I bought it back in the day (before Core2Duo processors) my Dual Core Pentium D can run a 64-bit OS, but it actually downgrades the performance, and my motherboard maxes out its RAM at 4GB. It’s going to be a bit of time before I can grab a new computer, but I will get there slowly but surely, as I am sure you all are going to want to do right about now.

There is no tentative release date for the CS5 software, but with this huge announcement we can only expect that they are going to let more new features, fixes and benchmarks out in the coming months, and hopefully a release date, but until then, I am saving my change to get a new motherboard, RAM and a 64-bit copy of Windows 7. I got some links for you all to check out to explore more features on this news as well:

Michael Coleman’s Keyframes Blog Post

Adobe’s 64-Bit CS4 White Paper

ProVideoCoalition’s Adobe Blog Coverage

So what are your thoughts on the issue? Are you going to be upgrading your system? Are you already running 64-bit? Are you going to wait a little while and keep using CS4 or CS3? Let us know in the comments!

*Also another thing to note, is that Premiere Pro CS5 will also be 64-bit native, and will generally benefit in all the same ways that After Effects will by utilizing the maximum amount of RAM that your system allows.

This seems to be a big problem with some noobs as well as weathered AE artists alike. Sometimes you just can’t figure out how to get that motion blur to work. It might be as easy as a switch you didn’t turn on, and sometimes it get as difficult as applying plugins, precomping, adding adjustment layers and so on. If you don’t know what I am talking about, motion blur is an effect that you can simulate in After Effects to make your graphics seem like they were filmed by a camera by adding blurred artifacts to your composition depending on the speed and movement of your imagery.

I am here to give you three ways to get that motion blur to work, however render intensive it may be. Also, thank you to John Dickinson of Motionworks for a helpful tip that I didn’t know about, that saves you time in your 3d application by rendering out non-motion blurred layers, and using the often overlooked built in After Effects effect, Timewarp.

What do you all think? If you have any other workarounds to get that motion blur look on your footage that I didn’t demonstrate, leave a comment and let me know! Also check out the tutorials that were mentioned in this tutorial: Aharon Rabinowitz’s Blurring FX With Force Motion Blur and John Dickinson’s Explosive TV Promo Graphics.
