People are drawn to castle prints of Scotland for various reasons, many of which are rooted in the country’s rich history, dramatic landscapes, and the romantic or mythical aura surrounding its architecture. Castles in Scotland are not only magnificent historical landmarks, but they also offer breathtaking scenery , a unique domain and a sense of timelessness, making them captivating subjects for art buyers.

A Sense of History and Mystique

Scottish castles are steeped in centuries of history, often associated with battles, noble families, and significant historical events. They evoke a sense of intrigue, romance, and mystery, which adds a unique layer of appeal to prints and artwork. Many people who buy castle prints are fascinated by the stories these structures could tell, such as those of medieval knights, royal struggles, or clan conflicts. Owning a print of a Scottish castle is like owning a piece of that ancient history.

For those with Scottish heritage, castle prints can serve as a connection to their roots. The architectural grandeur of these structures, often perched on dramatic landscapes, appeals to people with a love of history, especially those who feel a deep connection to Scotland’s past. Even visitors who experience these castles in person often want a memento that captures the experience and serves as a lasting reminder.

Captivating Landscapes and Iconic Locations

Many Scottish castles are set against jaw-dropping landscapes, with sweeping views of lochs, forests, and cliffs. This combination of historic architecture and nature’s beauty is irresistible for both photographers and art buyers. Castles often appear otherworldly, especially when mist or low light bathes the scene, which makes them ideal subjects for prints that capture a magical or ethereal quality.

For photographers and artists, these scenes offer a perfect balance of man-made structure and natural wonder, often evoking romantic or nostalgic feelings. Buyers are drawn to these qualities, looking for artwork that adds beauty, serenity, or drama to their living spaces.

Popularity of Eilean Donan and Dunnottar Castles

Eilean Donan Castle and Dunnottar Castle are two of the most popular castles for art buyers, and for good reason.

Eilean Donan Castle is perhaps the most iconic Scottish castle, often photographed and widely recognized internationally. Located on a small island where three lochs meet, its picturesque setting and stone bridge create a fairytale-like image that appeals to a broad audience. Eilean Donan is also associated with Scottish patriotism and has been featured in numerous films, adding to its fame and desirability as a subject for art. The dramatic, often misty surroundings, the reflection of the castle in the loch, and the sense of isolation make it a particularly captivating subject. The castle is 200 miles north of Edinburgh , deep in the heart of the Highlands . Private tours of four Scottish castles can be booked by phone / Whatsapp +447305294773 from Private tours Edinburgh

Dunnottar Castle, on the other hand, is dramatically positioned on a rugged cliff overlooking the North Sea. The ruins of the castle are equally impressive as its location, exuding a sense of wild, ancient beauty. Dunnottar’s remote, wind-swept appearance offers a powerful visual impact, often capturing the imagination of those interested in the wilder, more untamed side of Scotland. The castle’s association with important events, such as the protection of the Scottish Crown Jewels from Oliver Cromwell’s forces, further adds to its allure for buyers who are also history enthusiasts.

Appeal to Art Buyers

Both of these castles exemplify what makes Scottish castles so attractive: a combination of rich history, breathtaking natural surroundings, and emotional resonance. Art buyers often seek out prints of Eilean Donan and Dunnottar because these castles symbolize different aspects of Scotland’s identity—romantic, enduring, and rugged. For people with a personal connection to Scotland, whether through ancestry or travel, these prints offer a meaningful way to keep that connection alive.

In addition, castle prints can also represent a form of escapism, transporting viewers to a time and place far removed from modern life. The mix of nature and architecture, the weathered stones against green hills or turbulent seas, provide a visual experience that is both timeless and evocative.

Conclusion

Scottish castle prints remain popular for their ability to convey history, beauty, and mystique. Eilean Donan and Dunnottar Castles, in particular, stand out as top choices for art buyers, largely because they encapsulate the essence of Scotland’s heritage and natural splendor. For many, owning a piece of this imagery serves as both an artistic investment and a personal connection to Scotland’s past. Castle domains are a unique gift

Food photography is great fun and really easy to get into. All you need is a camera (which if you own a smart phone, you already have) and some food.

Here are 5 simple ways to improve your food photography.

1) Use a window or one large rectangular softbox for lighting.
Most of us eat our food at a table, and if we are lucky, the room is being lit by a large window. The light from this is what we have come to expect when we see food, the softness, direction and even the catch lights on our tomatoes. Following this rule will give appetizing light every time.

2) Work with a food stylist
Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and as photographers, we can’t do everything perfectly. Almost all high-end food photography is taken as a collaboration between a home economist, food stylist and a prop house. Bring people in to help you achieve the best shot possible if you want to take it seriously.

3) Get overhead
Tumblr, Instagram, and Pinterest have made this common practice. However, holding a professional camera over a table is a lot harder than holding an iPhone above one. In the studio, I either stand on pallets either side of the dish which is placed on the floor, or I use a large studio tripod. The most important thing is to have the camera completely level.

4) Create simple shapes in groups of three
This principle goes throughout photography. Creating triangles with objects and placing circles strategically has a great impact on your photography in general and food photography is no exception to this rule. Before the food is plated, grab the items and make a rough layout focusing on the shapes and patterns through the viewfinder.

5) Isolate the product
Sometimes the food or raw ingredient is striking enough. Try not to overcomplicate things if there is a striking image right there in front of you

What tips for food photography can you share?

For seasoned travellers and anyone trying to decide where to go to next , finding somewhere that ticks all the boxes is becoming more difficult . Internet information overload can dull the enthusiasm and make you wonder if it’s all worthwhile .

Step up Caroline Buttet’s do-it-yourself solution which might offer a bit of help. OK , looking at pictures of someone else enjoying themselves just reminds you of how long it is since you took a holiday yourself — but it at least makes the experience a bit more fun for the viewer.

Buttet has created an intuitive solution – a touch-sensitive globe that displays the photos belonging to whichever country you tap. “Globe Trotter is a tangible picture viewer, especially designed to make vacation picture viewing more enjoyable,” she comments.

“It consists of an interactive globe that is linked to a computer via an Arduino, which interacts with a webpage. It allows the user to browse pictures ordered by country, by physically touching any country on the globe. The user can then spin the globe back and forth to view the images, like in a slideshow.”

Building a capacitive globe sounds like hard work. In fact, Buttet achieved the effect using a (relatively) simple hack: She stuck a thumbtack in each country, with the sharp end inside the globe connecting to a wire that links to the Arduino.

“Globe Trotter is just a proof of concept, and therefore there is still a lot of improvements that can be made,” she continued. “These include things like integration of geotags, automatic sorting of photos, and finding a way to make it wireless. I made the prototype just for fun, with no thought of commercializing it or anything like that. But lately I’ve started to get requests from people over the internet. If enough people are interested, maybe I’ll publish the code and go open source at some point.”

Just over 300 metres north of Muiravonside Church are the remains of Almond Castle. This was once the principal seat of the Barony of Manuel and, anciently, the castle and its immediate lands were known as Haining. William de Crawfurde de Manuel is on record in 1417. It remained with the Crawford family until the middle of the sixteenth century. William Crawford, the last of the male line, died in or around 1542. He was married to Margaret Livingston and he was survived by their two daughters, Agnes and Margaret. Agnes was married to Thomas Livingston, third son of Alexander, Lord Livingston of Callendar and, Margaret once she came of age, sold her half to Agnes in 1551. The estate was held by this branch of the Livingstons until the middle of the seventeenth century. Sir James Livingston, the younger son of Alexander, Lord of Callendar and Earl of Linlithgow acquired the lordship of the castle and lands sometime around 1640. He had been honoured with the title of Lord Almond by King Charles I in 1633 for his past services and, as was not uncommon, his title became attached to the property. A writ of 1694 has ‘Hayning now called Almond’. After the forfeiture of the Livingstons of Callendar in 1716 the castle and lands were held by the York Buildings Company until they were purchased by William Forbes in 1783.

The castle appears to have been first built as a tower-house in the fifteenth century by the Crawford family; the surviving part is that earliest structure. Major additions were made in the sixteenth century superficially transforming it into a mansion house. By the time it came into the hands of Forbes it was uninhabited and ruinous. In recent decades the ruin has survived within the work premises of Stein’s of Manuel. The recent closure of the works and the planned redevelopment of the area offers hope for repair and stabilisation of the castle in the future.

The castle, which attracts about 460,000 visitors per year, beat competitors including Edinburgh Zoo and Dynamic Earth.

VisitBritain, which markets the UK abroad, has dubbed them ‘Kai Po Ju Ma’ in promotional literature in China – which translates as “glorious armoured giant horses”.

Our Kelpies gift shop features 50 great Kelpies photo gifts including, posters, phone cases, prints , clocks and bags .

It follows the results of a £1.6 million ‘Great Names for Great Britain’ campaign, which builds on the existing trend of giving relatable Mandarin names to favourite celebrities, places and foods.

“Kai Po Ju Ma” have set records with over 600,000 in their first year of opening . A new visitor centre is being built to help cope with the influx of visitors and improve their experience at the sculptures.

New Mandarin names for 23 iconic Scottish attractions have been announced in total, including Edinburgh’s Royal Mile and Glencoe.

The campaign reached nearly 300 million Chinese prospective visitors to the UK through VisitBritain’s influential Weibo and WeChat social media platforms across China. Over two million people visited the campaign pages and nearly 30 million Chinese people watched the launch video, with 13,000 new names suggested throughout the ten week-long voting period.

Andy Scott, the artist responsible for the Kelpies, said: “I’m delighted that The Kelpies have reached out to a new audience and that they have been recognised with such an evocative and dynamic Mandarin name.

“It’s a real accolade for me as the artist and the whole team involved in The Kelpies that they have been adopted for the VisitBritain campaign and been so well received in China.
