The Incredible Hulk and Wolverine are arguably two of the biggest comic book characters of all time. They have fought many battles, I have shown you some. Now I present to you something that really is worthwhile in terms of art. Even if if you do not like comic books, even if you don’t like spandex, the art of this book is stellar. It is done by Sam Kieth.

Don’t know who Sam Kieth is?

Sam Kieth is probably most famous to non comic book fans for the MTV show THE MAXX. I liked The old MTV cartoons, and he fit nicely around Aeon Flux, and other alternative comics on the channel.

These scans are from a recent (not too recent) issue from Marvel Comics…I recommend reading some comics for the artwork and off center story…just watch the way the artist works out the images…you’ll enjoy it.

There you go. I had previously posted this on my comic book blog, but instead of posting all 36 pages of this, I took a few action shot scans and placed them here. Enjoy your weekend and if you have extra dimes check out amazon links conveniently located to your right. If not, it’s fine, I’m going to go lay down or something.

My second book in a long winded history of women that have found out that Mormonism isn’t all its cracked up to be. Shattered Dreams by Irene Spencer is an incredible story of one woman’s desire for more than just plural marriage. This book is a good memoir overall, an easy read, with lots of great moments. It moves you to tears at times, but unlike Escape by Carolyn Jessop, this one wasn’t as extreme in the abuse category.

Shattered Dreams by Irene Spencer, really taks you from all sorts of different struggles. Irene spends a lot of time wishing she wasn’t another sister wife, and at times wants a divorce. Her husband keeps trying to make it work, and I have to say that He is somewhat sincere and not like the polygamy that we heard about in these latter years from Utah or Texas. Irene’s story really hit me hard because she lived like a Mexican. My mom was one of 18 children, and shares parallels with Irene’s story. While my grandmother was not part of plural marriage, she was a stone cold catholic and didn’t believe in birth control. My mom and myself lived with no electricity, no major running water, and so much lackluster things until we got here to the land of plenty.

Irene Spencer and her husband chooses to live in the lackluster world of Mexico. So she isn’t living it up in luxury, she struggles throughout as the head of the home tries to pay for each member of his families needs. It just didn’t work, and throughout you get a real sense of despair.

One story that stands out for me was how Irene Spencer’s love affair with a Mexican gardener. It didn’t get too steamy, but it was definitely a turning point for me. As a voyeur in the story, I was figuratively raising my fist and cheering her on, even though it was a sin to commit adultery I felt the Mexican passion and vigor that has gripped our culture to love White women (sorry, to be crass…), shining through the pages of this book. I liked that part, and when the opportunity came for her to escape with this Mexican man, I was hoping for her to do it! When it didn’t happened, I was let down.

It was then that I realized that this book is really good. It really goes from brainwashing to a new life in several hundred pages. While there are moments of slow moving text with Irene’s complaints and storytelling, but I understood why she was writing the way she was writing.

Shattered Dreams: My Life as a Polygamist’s Wife by Irene Spencer triumphs for me in the epilogue. She updates you on her life now, gives you a crash course in Mormonism, and really sounds happy. She finally is happy, which is a great thing, after such an exhausting time spent living in somewhat of a hell….I’ve yet to see a good point for polygamy. The sacrifice of committed women to plural marriage have never seemed too happy in these books of those that escaped. Sure, there are accounts of plural wives that showcase a true facade, but it’s not that fun…no matter what HBO’s Big Love showcases.

I liked this book. It has such a great memory of the past, and I really liked how this family was in Mexico…my home country and contrasted that with Catholicism. Extreme poverty, religion, and freedom shine through this text and it made me feel like I knew this person, and that’s another sign of a great book. Irene Spencer has a new book coming out in August, and I’ll most likely read that one too.

So which one was better? This or Escape? I’m not sure, I like each one in its own way. There’s other books to read on the subject, but I really am enjoying learning about this cult. Check out Shattered Dreams by Irene Spencer if you’re interested in Fundamental Mormon Cults.

While it’s not as biographical as the movie, and doesn’t really focus on the aspects of his day to day life in the present, it really moves along a nice story of his birth and childhood through adulthood.

The Quitter is quite good, and features a lot of similarities to my life and many others. While Pekar wasn’t a straight immigrant here, his parents were and he lived in hard neighborhoods, where he would get beat up simply for being white. He then turned those beatings backwards and dished out some major punishment upon moving to the suburbs. Through candid details and classic storyboards, The Quitter really triumphs as a work of genius. The artwork is done by one person, and there is major continuity felt throughout the narrative.

Dean Haspel’s art really is quite good, with some great angular details and great ink. There is no color in this comic, and the story doesn’t suffer at all because of it. I related with the stories overall tone, and can only hope for a brighter future. Pekar quit school, quit working, went into the military, and really did a lot of things out of the sheer nature of not wanting to try. Along the way he got lucky, learned to love Jazz and became a well known writer. There’s so much more to it than that, but for the sake of this review I won’t spoil it for you.

Here is an example of the artwork and storyline that you’ll find in The Quitter:

I recommend The Quitter by Harvey Pekar as a good comic book biography, as it really touches you in places that only movies might have done so before. While there are some boring moments in the book, the majority of the content really shines through. I liked it, and recommend it. Oh right…I forgot, this is a graphic novel.

I’ve been holding out on buying dvd’s and books right now. Honestly, I’ve been using the library way more than ever in my life. I find it easier to get things and test them out before I buy them. Since I don’t believe in filesharing or downloading music, I try things out via the library and if I like them that much I buy them. If not, then I don’t have to lose. However, I got an email from Amazon and I couldn’t resist picking up some serious dvd’s. These prices aren’t going to stay for long, so I decided to scope out what Amazon has in terms of dvd sales, and boy was I amazed at how low some of the prices are right now. I picked up some new television shows, but most of my personal savings were in the Anime department, picking up whole box sets for as low as 9.99 which I’ve been holding out purchasing since I was a vice president of the Anime Club in High School.

First from the mighty Amazon online store, is they are clearancing over 1,000 box sets! That’s right, if you were trying to wait for lower prices on television box sets, now is your chance to act on impulse. Amazon is unveiling mark downs in the coming weeks that will have you floored. 60% off all television box sets and even bigger deals. You really gotta wake up if you’re holding out for some decent television because Amazon has you covered.
David Duchovny really shook his whole FBI thing with this hit Showtime series. Californication Season 1 revolves around a writer, with writers block, and his experiences in living in Los Angeles. To complicate things, he is in love with his ex-wife, but are still friends, and is having relationship problems.

With any good series, conflict is presented at every turn, and in this series his ex finds a man that turns into the main characters boss. It also doesn’t help that he sleeps with his 16 year old daughter…ouch.

The show is ok, the first few episodes were really heavy on the sex. The sex scenes ranged from typical to violent, one scene showing Duchovny’s character getting punched in the face during the situation.

I found it very odd that he slept with a 16 year old in the show, creating conflict. The reason I bring it up is because there are people serving jail time for watching, or distributing content that depicts an adult with an “underage” model. Of course the model is of age, and has papers, but that doesn’t matter. So when Duchovny’s character sleeps with a 16 year old, I yelled “WAIT A MINUTE!” the depiction of child sex here is a complete hypocritical move by Showtime and the Supreme Court. I guess we’ll let it slide somehow because it’s Showtime? I don’t know, I’m not explaining it right at all and I’m doing a terrible job reviewing this show.

Showtime comes with a cool little winner here. I had my doubts, but with 30 minute shows, simple plots and overall tones, I kind of like this show. The setting is really waht does it for me. The show features locations in Venice, Santa Monica, Culver City and more. It makes me miss my old stomping grounds, and maybe that’s why I really like this show, more than the actual show itself.

There are moments in the show that are boring, and the sexualization of the title and the character is a little outlandish, but it works somehow, I don’t know how, but it works. Check out Californication Season 1 on dvd now, from Showtime.

I like R. Crumb. I loved his work on American Splendor and really enjoy his alternative comics. I recently ran into this cool book, in hardcover form, of a limited edition hardcover book of Sex Obsessions from Robert Crumbs personal artistry of off beat cultural sexuality.
Sure, first thing you are thinking is that this [...]

I like R. Crumb. I loved his work on American Splendor and really enjoy his alternative comics. I recently ran into this cool book, in hardcover form, of a limited edition hardcover book of Sex Obsessions from Robert Crumbs personal artistry of off beat cultural sexuality.

Sure, first thing you are thinking is that this is deviant artistry, but I beseech you to take a closer look. These fetishes are not just pornographic images or scribbles on a bathroom wall, these are carefully plotted adult cartoons that are not really meant for arousal but rather appreciation. That’s at least how I see it, I don’t see it is perverse, even though some might argue that I’m ignorant, crass, or socially inept.

They have little to do with the standard procreative urge, Mr. Crumb admits. He has also said he finds nothing more boring than someone else’s sexual obsessions, and yet through his long career the world’s most famous underground cartoonist has felt compelled to include his own sex fantasies in his art. He explains it as a compulsive catharsis, while fans call R. Crumb’s erotic fantasies the Master at his best. Now Crumb has selected his most intimately revealing comic strips and single page drawings to create a 256 page encyclopedic trip through his sexual psyche. All images were created between 1980 and 2006, and all strips are colored for a lush vibrancy never seen in his comic books. In total the book features 14 complete stories, including My Troubles With Women II, If I Were a King, A Bitchin’ Bod and How To Have Fun With a Strong Girl, as well as 62 single page drawings.

This signed, slipcased, limited edition of 1,000 copies is a work of art in itself, with every part of the book–case, front and back covers, spine, introduction and pre-introduction pages–created for this project by Robert Crumb. Each book also comes with a print on mould-made age-resistant hahnemuehle paper pulled from an original watercolor by Robert Crumb.

The artist admits it’s a little scary to see his most fevered obsessions collected and to end like this, but fans will find R. Crumb’s Sex Obsessions a fascinating peek inside an often tortured, always brilliantly talented mind, as well as an unparalleled collector’s item.

So what’s so weird about this collection, you might be asking? Well, Robert Crumbs Sex Obsessions is five hundred dollars! That’s right, this is no fly by night artbook, this thing is for the ultimate Crumb fan. Yep…I kid you not, this thing is normally priced at $700 and you can pick it up for 200 dollars off. Hey, it’s not everyday you get yourself a very good art book and if you’re a Crumb fan this ultimate collectible is already in your hands or in your scope.

I know I wish I could pick it up…as a huge Crumb fan, I feel like I’m missing out somehow. This thing is super rare, one thousand copies only! Once they are gone they are gone, so pick up your limited edition Robert Crumb Sex Obsessions book, before you’re left out of the collectors circle.

You ever feel like you have it all?

I have. I have tasted the glory. I was on tour once, with a band that I loved, and I had no cares in the world once. I tasted what it was like to not have a 9 to 5 job of boredom. I recall pursuing dreams and getting a hook into the flesh of the fatted calf. Those times are gone though.

I feel lonely sometimes. Maybe you do too.

I’m married, true. However, like many men in our society I spend 12+ hours away from my wife. To further quantify this separation, I sit in a room with 1 other person…we don’t say much sometimes. There’s nothing to say…we are in the same boat…just in a vast ocean of wasted potential and soggy cereal.

I lament a lot. Is it unfounded? Maybe. But it’s how I feel.

I also say things that I think, so it’s not like I’m a flimsy, wishy washy, person. I’m strong in conviction, but I’m not far removed from that lonely kid that slept on his mothers floor for several years as a sacrifice to allow the family to to have some privacy.

I don’t know what it is, but I have a bad taste in my mouth. A taste of that bitterness that comes only from indignation. I guess I could repent, but to whom? I swear that sometimes I truly am a cyclops amidst the blind…an outcast, a ghost, a vapor.

I’m going to have to apologize for the flood of book reviews. I have been reading like a mad man this week. I have decided to start living true to my love of literature by reading everything I can get my hands on. I’ve been troubled with the notion that Americans (and Mexicans) don’t read much. I also want to pass down the joy of reading to my children someday, so I figure with all the time I have on my hands I would juggle watching movies, working on internet stuff and reading. So here is another review for you.

American Splendor Another Dollar by Harvey Pekar is a quick read with some great mundane stories. Harvey Pekar has been writing about his life for so long, and every story showcases interesting stories about otherwise mundane interactions. It doesn’t hurt that he has a way of making everything sound interesting, mixed with comic book styles.

Some of the stories are somewhat boring, but Pekar keeps these short and to the point. My favorite of the stories deals with a fall that he took and broke his elbow. It isn’t epic, it’s two pages, three pages tops, and there isn’t much dialogue. This is noteworthy because there are a lot of pages filled with back and forth dialogue, and few pages of action. You have to remember that these are not action comics, they are day to day true to life stories.

American Splendor Another Dollar by Harvey Pekar is illustrated by a ton of different people, each story has different styles, and each one isn’t half bad. It’s a fast read and Pekar fans will enjoy it greatly. New comers to Pekar’s work won’t enjoy it as much, as they aren’t really prepared for this type of slow moving day dream of a comic book anthology. If you have time check this one out, I liked it.

I can’t believe this was a true story, proving yet again that the truth is stranger than fiction. Escape by Carolyn Jessop is a book that floored me this week. I couldn’t put this book down, every page lifted into my imagination and each word kicked me in the butt. There are people out there that are so evil, and there is bondage to sex, lies, and abuse that transcends any petty problem that I may complain about, this book is one of the best books I’ve ever read. It is pushed into my psyche even more because it is a true story.

The book is about Carolyn Jessop, born into a polygamist world and put through the flames of the Fundamental Latter Day Saints movement. While I was being smuggled into this country by my parents, Carolyn was facing a life of torment and trials in one of the most misunderstood religions and belief systems in the United States. Jessop’s story goes from happy go lucky to increasingly more macabre as she goes through the years.

I was shocked that here would be men that would treat their wives with so much disgust, like slaves, sexual predators under the guise of “God”, and think nothing of it. Furthermore, it floored me that anyone would ever believe such a lie as polygamy, but the story didn’t make me hate the religion. I already knew the whole Latter Day saints story line as I studied the Mormon religion in college, and am well aware that there is a masculine abuse that underlines everything that happens in that faith, but this book turns that up to 11. The amount of abuse that these women took in this camp story s horrendous.

The book shocked me with not only callous sexuality, lack of birth control, but reality. The strength to endure escapes me, and it merits Carolyn Jessop with a strength that I do not posess, and in some ways envy. She endures abuse, and manages to get a serious education, and as more wives are introduced continues to live in such hell.

The first thing I thought in following this book was, WHY NOT ESCAPE? This was answered within the chapters as those that escaped were dragged back kicking and screaming in a severely broken system. I know what it is like to be abused, as my mother and I lived in an abusive home and when you fight for so long you lose your will and eventually things get worse. This book illustrates that so well in the first person. At times I felt that I was writing this book from personal experiences, although my story is way diferent in every way. Abuse is abuse though, and this book nearly had me in tears.

There is a triumph in this book that is great, and towards the end of the book you start cheering for Carolyn and you start wishing ill will towards the men. Warren Jeffs comes into the light and things go for broke. I have yet to see a mormon admit to Blood Atonement, and reading that Jeffs was talking about that with his followers proved to me that I was right about the mormon faith all a long and those that lost family members to “Blood Atonement” in the films “The Godmakers” were not in vain!

Things for me really broke out when she talks about getting a hysterectomy in her early 30’s, something that made me sad. My mother had the same thing, and I had to help her get better when my stepfather didn’t help her at all. This wrecked me and I had to put the book down for a short while, before getting back to it.

I kid you not, I flew through this book because I couldn’t put it down. Escape by Carolyn Jessop is a triumph of will, emotion, and one of the best books I’ve read all year. It’s a first person narrative about escaping the FLDS and while the ending doesn’t 100% come out smelling like roses, it is easy to see how this book has inspired a movie deal, and makes shows like “Big Love” all the more enjoyable.

I can’t believe that this book gripped me so much.

Here is Carolyn Jessop talking about her experiences:

Escape by Carolyn Jessop gets my highest recommendation. I loved the book, and at the end wished that I could meet the author and interview her. I would love to hear her talk of her experiences, her freedom, and new lease on life. This is a breathtaking work of unimaginable pain, and I’m glad she wrote it.

I think that after reading this book, I can’t really complain about such petty vices and unhappiness I may feel at times. I am so thankful, and I think you might be thankful if you give this book a chance.

Me of Little Faith by Lewis Black is a hilarious romp through religion and personal experience. The second book I read in the last 7 days by Lewis Black is his latest. This book is about religion and faith. It is not the traditional “what should I believe”, self help nonsense that is fed to a lot of people these days. This book is nothing more than Lewis Black ranting and raving in a comedic fashion about what Religion tries to give us. That’s right, RELIGION! This book is hilarious and an easy read at that.

The book starts out simple and to the point. Lewis Black talks about his childhood growing up what he would call “Jewish”. He then poetically flows through comedic standards and stereotypes. But he does it in such a semi-educated way, much like Religulous had Bill Maher talking some serious game. Lewis Black digresses a few times in this, with the doubts of anyone that is sincerely trying to seek the root of religious ideas and faith. I admire the position, although I disagree.

The best part of the book is his talk about Mormonism. It seems like the Mormons take some serious shots because their faith is not only founded on a lie, it is founded on a ton of lies that are so blatantly obvious that it makes one ponder what the hell is wrong with our country. Seriously, we know how to brew completely idiots in America (as exposed by my rant against Michael Jackson news coverage). I was dying of laughter as Lewis Black calmly explained the real tenants of Mormonism and his experiences in trying to perform comedy in Salt Lake City, Utah.

This book is highly recommended, although towards the end of the book it gets a little less funny and more just frivolous and unnecessary. I enjoyed the read, albeit short, and I really think you might enjoy it if you like Lewis Black.

Me of Little Faith by Lewis Black skewers a lot of religions, and really takes a hard look at each one. He makes fun of everyone involved, and even talks trash of the religious idiots that have somehow made a living on “praying”. While I am a Christian, I find this type of humor hilarious because it’s so true. Sometimes as religious people, we are so earnest about our faith, but can’t take a joke. You know what? I can take a joke and see the hypocrisy, but I also hold some things to be true, and this book was never too much for me. He finishes the book with a simple message, to lighten up and take a joke. He is not saying don’t believe in this, or don’t believe in that, rather he is saying that we should examine what we believe and really consider how far we are pushing what very well maybe dumb ideas. Me of Little Faith by Lewis Black is a good read.

I was trying to read the news about the Ark of The Covenant. I realized that it was a lost cause.

Why?

Because it appears that ALL news resources were pointing to the death of Michael Jackson. And you know what? WHO CARES! I know, I know, it’s not a popular thing to say in regards to someone that has passed away, but if you look at the news site above, that I have screen grabbed really quick, You will notice that almost all news coverage is ABOUT MICHAEL JACKSON! What the HELL!

Why is the world so fixated on a musical, pop, celebrity? It’s funny to me that his death has completely overshadowed Iran, Militant U.S. Policies, it is a perfect illustration on how we are all proving Huxley’s point right. We have amused ourselves to death and now are in a cloud of stupidity, because I can’t get some stupid news because of all the coverage on the fallen pop star. In fact, what the hell, even Spanish language news is posting that before all others!

WHY! I’m so sick of this crap, I just want a news source that doesn’t splash this as the most important thing in the world! Because if we measure the amount of time and effort spent on this musical idiot (sorry but i had to say it), then how much are we ignoring? I don’t understand, I just don’t get it, and you know what? It is not that important! It isn’t at all important that we spend all this time on it, and how hard is it to ignore it? It is hard when it’s shoved in my face at all news sources that claim to be impartial and unbiased! You know how I know that it is a lie? BY LOOKING AT TODAYS WEBSITES!

Ok, I’m done ranting, I hate how we no longer use our brains. I am a cyclops in the land of the blind!

The above images, it should be noted, that are NOT in the entertainment sections! Those are from the FRONT PAGES!

2. You don’t have to have a huge store to have a skateboard shop.

I sometimes fantasize about having a skateboard shop. But my dreams and realities don’t intertwine much because I’m not a rich person and I’m scared of borrowing 50k - 150k in finances to make my dream a reality. I also don’t like the way I have been crunching numbers and really am not looking forward to the possibilities of failure.

But I saw this photo and realized that things don’t always have to be this HUGE shop that gets tons of traffic…but there’s nothing wrong with that. I just like this small shop, it’s in Portland Oregon. It was just a cool photo. That’s all.

Microsoft’s newest operating system Windows 7 will officially be available for order sooner than later. By the time you find this post, it will already be ready to purchase. Windows 7 is a truly exciting new Microsoft launch with great new features including Jump Lists, Aero Shake, Snap, new Device Stage Management, as well as new levels of home group network interaction. I want to stress that this new Windows Operating System is NOT like Vista. It is already getting great reviews from tech companies that have been using it in beta, and here’s the cool thing. If you pre-order this bad boy you will save 50% on Windows 7! That’s right, get yourself a pre-order and save 50% off Windows 7! I for sure am getting in line, because this is the real deal, unlike Vista.

Unlike its predecessor, which introduced a large number of new features, Windows 7 is intended to be a more focused, incremental upgrade to the Windows line, with the goal of being fully compatible with applications and hardware with which Windows Vista is already compatible. Presentations given by the company in 2008 have focused on multi-touch support, a redesigned Windows Shell with a new taskbar, a home networking system called HomeGroup, and performance improvements. Some applications that have been included with prior releases of Microsoft Windows, including Windows Calendar, Windows Mail, Windows Movie Maker, and Windows Photo Gallery, will not be included in Windows 7; some will instead be offered separately as part of the freeware Windows Live Essentials suite.

If you’re planning on purchasing Windows 7 do so by clicking here, and save 50% off now! This is the cheapest way to get your system upgraded to Windows 7. Why wait? Get yourself a huge savings with Windows 7 at half off now!

You’ve seen the movie, but did you ever read Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk? In fact, have you ever read a book after the movie came out? Better yet still, did you ever read the book before the movie? If you have than you can relate with me. I loved Fight Club the movie, but people kept telling me that the book is way better, and far superior.

I doubted that.

The book is only 230 pages long, and the movie is over 2 hours long, how can this book be better?

Like it is in most cases, this book is better in many ways, but in others it’s not so hot.

The first thing you’ll notice in this book is how close it is to the movie you remember and love. The movie and the book separate though in some macabre ways. The book deals a lot more with Marla, and a more cowardly Tyler Durden alter ego.

The book is told in first person, so you breeze through a lot of it, and it is quite a good read. The narrator really has a hard time understanding what’s going on, but eventually figures it out, as you might already know. The gritty nature of the soap making process stunned me. It’s not exactly like the movie at all, and this one really plays on serial killer ideology. It’s quite gruesome but Chuck Palahniuk does such a good job in tone and mindset that you don’t feel like you’re watching a gore or horror fest. Your imagination plays nice with the whole thing.

There are a lot of themes involved in this book. Mainly, the book deals with men in our modern times. I find that masculinity is on trial here and it really made me think lot about my own personal life. At times I reflect about how I was raised by my mom and didn’t get much from my father. At one point the Tyler Durden states “We are a generation of men raised by women…” and that’s so true for me. That’s not necessarily a terrible thing, but I do relate with the theme of the book on a grander scale than just entertainment value.

The book is a quick read, and I highly recommend it. I really liked the tone and the length of this book, and while I found the ending chapters repetitive and sorely plotted (specifically with Tyler and Marla), I did enjoy it far better than the David Fincher film. Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk is a book that will remain an instant classic for all male readers, and female readers? I don’t know, the female character in this book is strong, but at the same time she is used as an object. However, she is smarter than some might think.

Here is he author at a borders answering questions:

Enjoy a book. Check this one out.
