Skoda has been roped in as channel partner for this launch. This is a part of Videocon d2h’s ongoing commitment to provide unmatched viewing experience for its subscribers.

In a bid to attain growth in average revenue per user (ARPU), direct-to-home (DTH) operator Videocon d2h has decided to increase its monthly subscription prices pan India.

Depending on the monthly subscription rate of the package, prices will increase in the range of Rs 12 - 23 per month.

The move comes in the wake of content expansion benefitting consumers as well as numerous technological advancements that the DTH operator has made over a period of time.

With the next two phases of digitisation kicking in, direct to home operator Videocon D2H is positive about the prospects of the company and hopes to make profits within the next three quarters.

“We hope to be PAT positive early next year or late this year (within the next three quarters),” Videocon D2H executive director Saurabh Dhoot told Deccan Herald. With 60-70 million analog homes planned to be digitised in the next 2-4 years as part of the the Phase 3 and Phase 4 digitisation, we hope to double our subscriber base in the next three to four years, Dhoot added.

Videocon D2H had a gross subscriber base of 13.7 million as on June 30, 2015. The company’s average revenue per user (ARPU) for the quarter ended June 30, 2015 was Rs 205.

The company, which had listed on Nasdaq early this year, has no immediate plans of fund raising for its expansion plans.

“We had raised capital from the US recently. Our debt is less than two times EBIDTA, we have cash in our hands and our business is getting free cash flow positive. The company is well funded for the next two phases of digitisation and does not need further capital imediately,” Dhoot said.

Since we are not in immediate need of funds, we have not yet refiled for the initial public offering (IPO) in India, Dhoot added. Videocon D2H had filed for an IPO to raise nearly Rs 700 crore with the Securities and Exchange Board of India in September last year but had withdrawn it on March 27, 2015.

According to Dhoot, the company is also open to the option of inorganic growth to increase its subscriber base.

“The industry has consolidated between the top four operators. There is not much scope for consolidation and growth remains robust and exciting for us,” Dhoot said.

However, there could be interesting acquisition opportunities in the future and we may look at it if it makes sense to us, Dhoot added.

Videocon d2h is now offering Viacom 18's Colors Infinity and Colors Infinity HD channels, as well as FOX Entertainment Group's Nat Geo WILD HD.

Direct-to-home (DTH) operator Videocon d2h has joined the over-the-top (OTT) service bandwagon. The company has launched a mobile TV app called Direct to Mobile TV that will make it possible for its subscribers to watch television anytime, anywhere on their mobile phones.

The app is available on Google Play as well as iTunes. The Direct to Mobile TV app will give viewers instant access to a wide range of news, entertainment, sports and movie channels.

Videocon d2h subscribers can watch over 70 select live TV channels and more than 3000 movies and videos available in the library. Videocon d2h added 1.74 million net subscribers in the fiscal. The direct-to-home (DTH) operator’s net subscriber base grew 20.6 per cent to 10.18 million, from 8.44 million in the prior year. Videocon d2h added 2.64 million gross subscribers during the fiscal. Its gross subscriber base saw a 25.2 increase to 13.09 million, from 10.45 million in the trailing fiscal.

Videocon d2h Limited has announced its financial results for the fiscal 2014-15 in which the company has registered a 32.5 percent growth in revenue from operations.

The company’s subscription revenue grew by 38.3 percent while the EBITDA grew by 55.3 percent.

Company’s release states that Videocon d2h Limited has emerged as a market leader in India for the 4th consecutive year based on gross and net subscriber additions which include 2.64 million gross subscribers added in fiscal 2015.

Executive Chairman of Videocon Saurabh Dhoot said that the strong balance sheet and continued momentum indicates that company is well positioned for the future.

“We are pleased to announce that we successfully listed American Depositary Shares on NASDAQ in April, becoming the most valued Indian company to be listed on the NASDAQ. Videocon d2h's listed on Nasdaq

Videocon d2h, the direct-to-home service provider from Videocon Group, made its debut on the Nasdaq on Tuesday with the listing of its $325 million American Depositary Receipts (ADRs). Earlier the company indicated that it was looking at a market cap of close to $1.20 billion on the listing day. With this listing, the company claims to have created several milestones including becoming the first Indian private company (since the year 2000) to list overseas, largest Indian IPO in US since 2007 and first sizeable Indian listing on US exchanges since 2010.

With several multi-billion dollar funds investing in the ADR, the IPO caught attention of top US funds including US-based Silver Eagle Acquisition Corp. Expecting a market cap of close to $1.2 billion and an enterprise value of $1.5 billion, Videocon d2h management said it will become the most valued Indian company on Nasdaq.

Calling the Nasdaq listing a major corporate milestone, Saurabh Dhoot, managing director, Videocon d2h, said it is a testament to the tremendous progress we have made under the digital India vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"This is the success of thousands of Videocon d2h employees working tirelessly and our customers who believed in our brand, product and services," said Dhoot, adding that post this development, Videocon d2h will now have to file a new draft prospectus for an initial public offering (IPO) in the domestic markets.

But even as 4K televisions become cheaper and smaller, there is still a serious dearth of content shot and broadcast in resolutions better than Full HD. All of India’s top DTH players have launched 4K set-top-boxes that are capable of streaming 4K quality content, whenever that becomes available in the real sense. Videocon launched its 4K service just before the ICC Cricket World cup and beamed one channel with some of the matches in 4K. However, the World Cup does not seem to have given the expected push for 4K content and televisions. I expect this to really take off around the Olympics next year, by when 4K could well become the standard that FullHD is now.

Set-top-box

The 4K STB seems a bit larger than regular set-top-boxes and has a gold branding that is hard to miss. Maybe Videocon wants to suggest that this is the gold standard for television content at the moment. The remote too has the gold branding. It is easy to grip and navigate, which is important given that we use the STB remote more than the actual TV remote these days. There is an HDMI port at the back that connects to the TV. What I like about the Videocon service is the fact that the box switches to life almost instantly and there is no latency like in other STBs.

4K content

Yes, you have an expensive 4K television. Yes, you have a costly 4K set top box. But no, there is no 4K content that you will love watching. Videocon service has one channel that constantly breaks 4K content. But there is a limit to how much snow boarding you can watch a day. The entire channel is a rerun sung plays the same videos on loop.

However, it is a great showcase of the what 4K offers. I have always considered 4K content a bit better than what the human eye sees and there is something eerily ethereal about watching pictures that are so clear. And the Videocon d2h 4K gives you a good sneak peak into what the future of television holds for us. It is stunning, it is how television should be. For the record, I tested the service on a 55-inch Philips 8500 series — a separate review of the TV will follow soon.

Right now the single channel is easy to access on a single click. But maybe when more channels come, the UI will need to show that more for users with the 4K set top box. They will not want to watch even full HD content on 4K televisions and that experience is far from good.

Should you buy?

Maybe not now. At the moment it does not make much sense for you to get a 4K STB unless you have already invested in a 4K television. For those who plan to buy a 4K television set this year, Videocon seems to be a good upgrade option.

Videocon d2h is looking at 50 to 60 per cent acquisitions in HD STB space

Sensing a strong business opportunity, Indian direct to home (DTH) operator Videocon d2h is augmenting a new strategy. With the number of High Definition (HD) channels set to increase in the coming years, Videocon d2h, which also manufactures set top boxes (STBs), will be phasing out its Standard Definition (SD) STBs over the next year or so.

Videocon d2h is looking at 50 to 60 per cent acquisitions in HD STB space from the current 30 per cent.

Speaking at the Asia Pacific Video Operators Summit (APOS) held in Bali, Videocon d2h CEO Anil Khera said, “The cost of difference between SD and HD set top boxes for us is only one and half dollar.”

It may be recalled that as per the 2013-2014 annual report of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the number of HD Pay TV channels has shot up to 34 in 2014 as compared to three in 2010. Indeed the HD feed is a precious value added service for broadcasters and DTH operators.

Khera also shared some insights and trends that he has been witnessing in the Indian DTH sector. “In terms of gross adds, the market has been consistently growing and we have seen a growth of eight to nine million new additions in a year. Net additions has been a challenge, and the industry has been able to get net addition of five to six million. As far as the rotation churn is concerned how one retains customers and provides additional services, is a big challenge,” shared Khera.

Highlighting the biggest hurdle for the sector, he opined that carrying HD channels with a limited satellite bandwidth posed a grave challenge. Projecting that there would be at least a hundred HD channels over the next one and a half year, Khera said, “All the Hindi and English general entertainment channels and movie channels will have a HD and SD feed.”

A sizeable growth of electronic HD TV sets would compliment this trend further, he said.

Speaking on Over the Top (OTT) platforms, Khera said that they were not to be seen as a threat but rather as something that can compliment TV services. “However, one disturbing fact is that premium content is available free of cost to customers. If it becomes pay, then it will definitely help the industry because we pay a premium to buy the same content,” Khera opined.

He also said that the platform, which currently offers Bollywood movie channels on its video on demand (VOD) service is also in talks with Hollywood studios to offer English movies. However, he said that after rolling out its first 4K channel, it will now add Hollywood movies in 4K on the channel soon.

It has built up its reputation as arguably the fastest growing DTH operator in India, apart from delivering snazzy features to subscribers. Now Videocon d2h has added another feather to its cap by becoming the first player in this space to announce its Ultra HD or 4K TV service. Readers should know that the TV picture gets more colour, more depth, and more details once viewed on a 4K TV set.

With nearly 11 million and growing subscribers, Videocon d2h MD Saurabh Dhoot is pretty proud of the company's achievement when he says: “We wanted to be the first company to deliver 4k ultra HD service to India.”

He is quite sure that demand for its service is bound to increase in India, even though Indian TV viewers are just about beginning to take a fancy to plain old vanilla HD television services. This apart, he is not perturbed by the fact that Indian broadcasters and producers are not really thinking 4K as yet and are ill-equipped to produce even if they decide to do so. Says the Dhoot family scion: “You have to preempt, at times. We come with the thought process of surprising customers and delivering what they are about to ask for before they ask for it.”

Indeed, the Videocon group is involved in the entire pipeline of television - right from TV sets to self-made STBs to its own DTH service (Ok so it has left TV channels and content creation to other players). Hence, it has been able to price the Ultra HD box at Rs 10,000 when production starts at its factories. Discussions are on with Broadcom for chips and semiconductors while Cisco is likely to provide the conditional access. Dhoot expects the price of the box to fall to Rs 4000 or Rs 5000 depending on the demand and production scale.

The STB works on a technology called high efficiency video compression (HEVC) which is 50 per cent more efficient than the MPEG-4 technology used in HD boxes. “The main investment is in transponder space. To overcome this, we have HEVC technology or else it would be a criminal waste of satellite space,” points out Videocon d2h CEO Anil Khera.

Official roll out of the service will be around October or November 2014, during Diwali when the company expects sale of 4K TV sets to pick up. “Ultra HD TV sales have picked up sharply this year as compared to last year when they were negligible. Over Diwali, we expect ultra HD sales to pick up more,” explains Dhoot.

While travel and lifestyle, sports and movies are the expected first lot of genres to experiment with 4K technology, it will tie up its first market promotion with a good 4K event. Talks with broadcasters have already commenced for the same, one of the first being Travelxp.

Dhoot is quite clear that Ultra HD will be a ‘very very premium service’ constituting a single digit per cent of its entire subscriber base. The initial offering to customers will be a single Ultra HD channel, broadcast from its Noida headend, which will carry content from any producer or broadcaster which wants to show case its Ultra HD content.

Eight million pixels versus two million pixels of HD TV is the clarity that this service along with TV sets of size 65 inches and above will provide. 4K UHD TVs are capable of delivering four times the picture resolution of 1080p full HD. It will also provide a cloud based recording facility.

The first target audience will be in the metros and their own existing subscribers, even though Dhoot stresses that it isn’t necessary that only cities consume expensive TVs. As and when events come along, communication will be given to subscribers through its channel page. Khera says that 30 per cent of new acquisitions request for an HD box. These will be the likely target audiences.

Though raising average revenue per user (ARPU) plays a significant role in increased revenues, ultra HD service will take a while to give a significant contribution given that initially it will only be event based such as finals of key sporting events or big movies. “HD subscribers have played a big role in incrementing revenue and ARPUs. The investment in ultra HD is made for a very long time. Once it clicks, the recovery is very fast,” says Dhoot.

On the sideline, it has also undergone a re-christening. Bharat Business Channel is now officially Videocon d2h. The main prompt for this was that the company’s identification was its service and for better communication practices, the name needed a change.

Khera is aware that the biggest issue with recording in 4K is the storage space as well as post production. He is hopeful that broadcasters and producers will test the Ultra HD waters.

Videocon D2H is planning IPO worth Rs 700 crore by January-February 2015

Direct-to-home (DTH) service provider Videocon d2hhas re-filed (pdf) its Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) with the market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for an initial public offering (IPO).

The starting price or the number of shares being offered is yet to be disclosed, however the company has informed that it is raising up to Rs 700 crore through this offering. Seven banks including Axis Capital, Edelweiss, ICICI Securities, IDBI Capital, UBS, SBI Capital Markets and Yes Bank have been appointed as joint book runners.

In the filing, Videocon d2h also notes that it is looking to raise up to Rs 50 crore through a pre-IPO placement of up to 5 million shares (5,000,000 equity shares) with a face value of Rs 10 each.

It’s worth noting that Videocon d2h had previously filed for an IPO in December 2012 and had also received SEBI approval in March 2013. However, it hadn’t gone ahead with the offering due to unfavourable market conditions.

Use of Net Proceeds: Of the Rs 700 crore, Videocon d2h intends to use Rs 350.8 crore to buy standard definition and high definition set-top boxes, outdoor units and accessories, and Rs 175 crore to repay certain debt, and the remaining for general corporate purposes like working capital requirements, capex and brand building exercises.

Videocon started its DTH operations the country in July 2009 and, as of June 30, 2014, it has 11.21 million gross subscribers with a market share of 16.2% of the gross DTH subscriber base across India. It offers 495 national and international channels, which includes 27 HD channels and 41 audio & video active music channels.

Financials

Videocon d2h reported a total income of Rs 1,760.8 crore for the year ended March 31, 2014, up from Rs 1,120.5 crore in the previous year. The losses however has moderately improved to Rs 469.4 crore for the year, as compared to Rs 515.1 crore in the previous year.

For the quarter ended June 30, 2014, Videocon d2h posted total revenues of Rs 537.7 crore and a net loss of Rs 78.1 crore.

Shareholding

Prominent shareholders in Videocon d2h are Synergy Appliances with 19% stake, Solitaire Appliances with 19% stake, Greenfield Appliances with 19% stake, Platinum Appliances with 4.98% stake, Shree Dhoot Trading and Agencies with 19% stake, and Dome-Bell Electronics India with 19% stake.

Videocon noted that promoter Saurabh Pradipkumar Dhoot does not directly hold any equity Shares, while Videocon Group Director Anirudha Dhoot holds a 0.02% stake and Videocon Industries chairman & managing director Venugopal Dhoot holds a negligible stake in the company.

With this IPO, Videocon d2h will be the second company from the Videocon group to go public, after Videocon Industries which is listed on BSE and NSE and has a market cap of Rs 5,377.46 crore at the day’s close today.

It will also be the second standalone DTH company to go public after Dish TV which currently leads the DTH market. Other DTH players include Airtel Digital TV, Tata Sky, Reliance Digital TV and Sun Direct.

Use your OLD DTH BOX & Take new Operator

Consumers dissatisfied with the services of their direct-to-home (DTH) operator may soon be able to shift to another one without having to change the set-top box.

The Centre has asked the-Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to explore how set-top box (STB) inter-operability can be effectively made possible.

Technical inter-operability will give the customer flexibility to change the service provider without having to change the customer premises equipment. It will only require changing a smart card, as in mobile communications.

I&B ministry officials said TRAI had released a recommendation paper last week on a new DTH licensing regime.

“In the paper, the authority has said STB inter-operability is not possible at present because of different technologies adopted by operators at different times of entering the market. They have asked the bureau of Indian standards (BIS) to regularly update the standard of STB technology,” said a senior official.

“We have now asked for recommendations on how portability of DTH set-top boxes can be done easily.”

This would be a step forward, in line with the practice prevailing in the global market.

Under the existing DTH rules too, set-top boxes have to inter-operable. But DTH operators have not ensured this, flouting licensing terms.

Some DTH operators have argued that set-top box inter-operability should be kept out of licensing guidelines. Dish TV, Tata Sky, Videocon d2h, Reliance Digital TV and Airtel Digital TV have claimed that achieving inter-operability is difficult because of varying technologies adopted by DTH operators and is commercially unviable.

MUMBAI: It has been seeking to make a public offering over the past two years, but market conditions have forced it to delay it time and again. But with the new Modi government generating a bullish sentiment in both the economy and the stock markets, the Videocon group's direct to home operation Videocon d2h has finally decided to take the public listing route once again.

Videocon Industries chairman & MD Venugopal Dhoot told a couple of business news channels late last week that the DTH operator’s IPO is planned for sometime during Diwali this year and it has filed a fresh prospectus with the Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI), as the earlier one has lapsed.

Dhoot pointed out to one of the business news channels that “Videocon d2h has been No1 in customer acquisition since it began. We have around 11 million subscribers today and we are wanting to take that up to 20 million. Hence we require some Rs 600 crore to Rs 700 crore which we will raise from the public to fuel expansion, growth and deliver value added services to consumers.”

His view is that around 15 per cent or so of Videocon d2h’s equity might be diluted to raise the funds, though the premium for public offering has not yet been decided. He, however, expects the d2h IPO to do well, as organic demand for DTH is only going to grow with the government mandated digitisation gathering pace, especially in rural areas.

He emphasised that the DTH operator is on course to report a positive EBIDTA in Q1 2015, following planned losses over the past few years. “When you begin DTH you have losses in the beginning. But once you start generating positive EBIDTA, it continues,” he said.

Dhoot also spoke highly about the first mover advantage Videocon d2h has in announcing its 4K or ultra HD service for Indian customers which it hopes to launch by Diwali too. Tata Sky, too announced last week that it will roll out its 4K transmission by early 2015.

But Dhoot is confident about Videocon d2h’s success. Said he: “Our DTH quality has been very good, service is very prompt and people across India have liked it because our brand is very popular and at low cost we can distribute the same. In India and across the globe, DTH has been very successful and we are already getting a good response from the market for our IPO.”
