The Metaverse is Not Ready for The World (is Not Ready for the Metaverse)?

What is the 'Metaverse'.

Virtual worlds where users can meet up, play, create, and collect items for their avatars to wear and show off.

This is not a new concept. Games like SecondLife (2003) had all of those things.

Now VR headsets are getting better (and cheaper), and things are getting a bit more interesting with NFTs and virtual land. Brands and celebrities are buying up land in online worlds; selling cosmetics and collectibles as NFTs for players is getting more common (and branded).

Second Life had its peak in 2013 and ran into some of the metaverse issues that are still a problem. Loading a ton of different items (textures, player avatars, animations, textures, sounds, etc.) can make scenes slow and clunky; and some players (griefers) will find bugs and glitches that they can wear or bring along with them to lag or crash the game for other players. Even with fast internet it can take a while to download several textures and animations in a scene, and for every character that loads in. Without strict scene limits, a player can often run out of graphics memory as well.

Although there are lot of good games to buy for VR, none of them are exactly GTA 5 or Halo Infinite level in graphics. Consumer VR headsets are far from ready to handle games of that size. A VR game has to render a scene twice, once for each eye, which is even difficult for most computers. VR headsets are basically androids on the face. This is why most VR games so far are mobile games quality, or low-poly.

PCVR

To get the best of VR you need a decent gaming computer and a VR headset able to connect to the computer.
Buy the games on Steam, for PC, whenever available, not on the headset store.

The world is not ready for the metaverse?

It's clear to see in the comment sections, and many influencer opinions, people are not too excited about the metaverse. besides the lack of graphics, it's mainly the idea of Meta (Facebook) 'Zuck's Metaverse' telling us what our future is going to be, taking over the gaming industry, or, at worst, trying to 'trap us in The Matrix'.
Is it just another way for the rich to get richer?
So many people are already attached to their Androids and iPhones, but they are not ready to put them on the face yet?

Wise Words From Players Who Spent 1000+ Hours in One Game

You can learn a lot from reading Steam reviews. About the games at least. Sometimes about the players too. A game may have terribly bad ratings due to a bad launch, but maybe some people still find value in the game. Sometimes the developers even listen to the players and fix mistakes. That may be the case in Fallout 76, a game that is now 3 years old and had a rocky start.

Enough bugs have been fixed to give the game a 'mostly positive' rating. However, it's not easy to find a positive rating from someone who spent 1000+ hours in 76. Many of these players are still upset about lost time and items.

Cyberpunk 2077 had a similar story. A bad start but managed to crawl its way back to Mostly Positive. It doesn't take anywhere near a thousand hours to finish, so the 1000hr club consists mostly of screenshot enthusiasts. It is beautiful game to explore with the right machine, and has a cool character creator.

Arma 3 has several players in the 1000+ hr club, and several in the 10k club and beyond, too. No surprise since it is a realistic military simulator where over 100 players can spend several days to compete or complete a multiplayer campaign.

I find the Rimworld soundtrack to be very relaxing when I want to focus. Sim City has the perfect themes to get the productivity flowing. Some of the best video game music is also in Skyrim. But that's more on the epic side. Recently I have been playing Divinity Original Sin II so there's some of that in the playlist as well.

Online gaming has evolved massively since it was first introduced more than 40 years ago.

People started playing online games during the early seventies on a distributed computer network called the ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) before the World Wide Web was invented.

Youtube is launching an app and website to show game related videos and streams. Every video game will have its own page where streams and latest footage will be highlighted. This coming right after YouTube finished major updates to Hangouts on Air. Every YouTube channel now enable streams and a dedicated link ready to go, instead of having to schedule streams with different links - with a chatroom and hangout options. I assume YouTube channels will integrate directly with the gaming.youtube app.

"And in the coming weeks, we’ll launch an improved live experience that makes it simpler to broadcast your gameplay to YouTube. I was reading up on the anticipated Oculus Rift Virtual reality headset when I came across this Google page introducing Cardboard, a do it yourself virtual reality setup for smartphones.

If you have a smartphone you can already start viewing virtual reality content.

With today's technology we can get a pretty decent virtual reality experience. How far away are we from making believable alternate realities that could have a person fooled?

We can emulate walking, with a treadmill like Virtuix Omni. We can get a pretty realistic visual experience of a computer world, with a device like Oculus Rift.

It's fun to imagine getting all these gadgets. It will get a bit expensive, though, to interact in these 3D worlds in so many ways.

And it can get a bit clunky as well.

But I'm excited about the future of these technological augmentations.

You learn to control the device interface with your thoughts, or in other words the device learns the language of your brain. Once mastered you can control your gadgets with your thoughts.

With some virtual reality glasses on, that would be a truly immerse experience.

Still, what is missing is, the other way around: sending signals back into the brain, basically - to get a real "feel" for being in the game world. I don't think we're too far from that either. For one, we are exploring how to induce lucid dreaming. I find that very interesting - In lucid dreams you create virtual realities, basically.
With the help of these technologies we could make dream creations more permanent.

Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat was the rare video game movie that stayed true to the source material while still putting together an awesome film. The fights were pitch-perfect, even if the actors were sometimes lacking. If you want to see a great video game adaptation, Mortal Kombat should be your first choice.

BloodRayne

BloodRayne occupied a very special niche in the video game world, and it occupied that same niche in movies. It is silly, full of cheesy fanservice and heavy on bloody action. The movie itself is no classic, but it is fun - performances by Ben Kingsley and Kristanna Loken are delightfully hammy, and the movie is probably the best thing ever made with Uwe Boll's name attached.

Silent Hill

Silent Hill is one of those games that always deserved to be a horror film. With a particularly creepy atmosphere and memorable characters, it was crying out for a decent adaptation. Silent Hill may not be the best movie of all time, but it does have something that is incredibly rare for a video game adaptation - good acting.

Resident Evil

The Resident Evil series of games has run the gamut from instant classics to forgettable cash-ins. The movie series has, perhaps not surprisingly, done much the same. The first Resident Evil film was only vaguely related to the game series, though each subsequent movie in the series added more elements from its parent games. The Resident Evil movies have been some of the most successful game films ever made - five movies have been released to varying degrees of success and at least one more is already in the works. If nothing else, these movies offer some staying power.

Prince of Persia

Raking in 335 million dollars, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is the most successful video game film ever made. The movie itself featured a number of elements that are foreign to the rest of the films on this list, including A-list actors at the top of their games and a heft special effects budget. The movie borrowed a few elements from the Sands of Time trilogy of games, though the story itself is entirely new. This movie was successful enough to spawn everything from action figures to LEGO sets, though, and is perhaps one of the first video game films to cross the line of mainstream public consciousness.

Hitman

Hitman is an oddity in the game world. While incredibly violent and sadistic, it also takes a great deal of precision and imagination for a player to be truly successful. The film of the game borrowed a great deal of the former, but relatively little of the latter. Still, the acting was top-notch and a great deal of the story resonated well with the basic nature of the game presented. Hitman has become a cable TV staple, so it deserves a spot on the list.

Doom

Doom was never going to win an Oscar, but that was never the point. Like the game that inspired it, this movie was big, loud and a little dumb. The plot may not have been great, but the Rock's performance is worth the price of buying the movie. It might have been something of a flop, but that does not mean that you do not owe it to yourself to find a rental copy.

These seven films are fun, but not perfect. As more people spend money on games, though, the budgets for these films will likely increase. Hopefully, that means that the list of the best movie games in the future will be a bit more impressive.

Video games are no longer the cultural pariahs that they once were and this is largely thanks to the rise in big budget, high profile games such as the 'Call Of Duty' series, which have collectively earned more than any major movie franchise in history. Quite an achievement one might think, for an industry which is less than 50 years old and rose from such humble beginnings (we all remember 'Pong' right?).
