And with that, I think we can finally and officially say goodbye to Tommy Wiseau. Cashing in on the limited collection of years-old references to The Room for a contextually nonsensical (Memorial Day? Why?) sponsored message from hip clothier Urban Outfitters seems like an unfortunate way to go out, but Elvis died on the toilet, and he was the king, so what are you going to do? Everybody’s got to put food on their families, or in the case of Eastern European vampires with deep mafia ties, everyone has to put fresh human blood untainted by fear in their vodka. If there is a lesson to be taken away from this whole thing, it’s that we should all be so lucky as to have something that we create resonate with an audience, even if it’s by accident and for all of the wrong reasons. And if/when that happens, we should be wise enough to enjoy that moment with the knowledge that it may not come around again. But, and here is where the lesson really comes in to play, if/when we feel that shine starting to fade, and the inevitable fear of the creeping return to irrelevance starts to inch its icy way up our backs, making our eyes water for no good reason when we’re just standing in line at the grocery store or waiting at a traffic light, we should still take a few minutes out of the day and try to decide for ourselves which is more important: our artistic conception of ourselves as creative beings remaining relatively intact, or $5,000 and a store-bought deli tray provided by Urban Outfitters for a web video that about 200 people will see. NOW LET’S FIRE UP THAT GRILL, IT’S THE WEEKEND! (Thanks for the tip, Jim.)

From the LA Times: “A guest at a charity auction at Cannes has paid 1.2 million euros ($1.5 million) for a trip into space with Leonardo DiCaprio. AmFAR, a nonprofit devoted to AIDS research, held the auction Thursday night at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc as part of its 20th annual Cinema Against AIDS event at the French film festival. The winning bidder paid to travel into orbit on a Virgin Galactic spaceship in a seat next to DiCaprio’s sometime in 2014.”
