A recent client asked for a little help getting his WordPress post on his Elegant Theme blog looking sharp. His challenge was the images weren’t fitting in the image slider, nice and neat. And since he’s a sports guy, not a geek, he was unsure how to get the images tidied up.

Using an Online Photo Editor called Pixlr, a little forethought, and some creative license, I step you through the process of taking every day photo’s and getting a unique image slide show that supports your blog content, and helps the reader connect with your message.

We will cover image scale, image cropping, and image sizing. We will also use WordPress’s media library to store the images, and the new Plugin from Elegant Themes called Elegant Builder to add an image slider with some fancy effects.

There are two major factors in employing Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to your WordPress post or page.

On page factors (like browser title, correct bolding techniques and use of the keyword meta tags) and Off page factors (like link authority, inbound links and correct internal linking strategies).

In today’s video, we will cover the details of how to SEO optimize WordPress post, using WordPress for SEO by Yoast for On page optimization.

This 45 minute video covers a LOT of SEO information and a certain fundamental understanding of why you should be optimizing your content is assumed. There are a few techniques covered, and we will explore SenSEO to help us understand what needs additional work.

WordPress: Repair Blank White Page in Dashboard

You updated to the latest version of WordPress and suddenly, your entire Dashboard went missing behind a blank white page that is completely empty. Now, you can’t do anything. No new posts, no new pages, no nothing. Your Dashboard is a blank white page.

You might as well say your dog ate your blog.

You can get it back though, and it’s easier than you might think. Follow along in this video while I show you what I do to repair this type of problem. You will learn a new troubleshooting technique in the process. This is a live and unscripted video of me repairing a blog for a client who updated WordPress and suddenly, her dashboard is missing in action.

Moving Your Tweaks Into New Elegant Theme Version

Are you using Elegant Themes? Have you followed videos here and made customizations to make it uniquely you? How do you deal with a new version that comes out?

I know, right?

God bless Nick Roach and his beautiful themes. But his update schedule is almost outta control. Don’t get me wrong.. I love that he stays on top of new security risks. I love that he is going back and making many of the more popular theme Responsive (a very necessary bit of editing that is. See my post title Responsive Web Design : Going Mobile Means It’s A Requirement. )

But I tend to customize my themes. A lot.

And not just the styling. (For that you should use his advanced feature and create a child style sheet to store only those changes you make that need to “override” his changes). I tend to add new things. Borrow a feature from one theme and place it in another.

The Elegant Theme Update Challenge

Every time Nick busts out a new update, I have to move all my customizations from the old version, into the new version. For all my blogs that use that newly updated theme.

Sounds easy, right? Well, with Beyond Compare, a tool I have been using since my Custom Software Development days, it is easy. Without it, not so much.

I did mention I manage more than 50 sites, right?

One of my coaching clients recently asked me exactly how I do it. I had mentioned in passing the Beyond Compare tool, and she wanted to know more about it.

So, on our next training call, we jumped right in and updated one of her themes (Boutique) using the patented *Let’s make it as easy as we can* method. This video is that session.

I found one more reason to crow about the virtues of Firefox. It’s an addon for Firefox that allows you to check your site and give you a grade based on selected criteria.

It shows you what your competition is doing right, and what they are doing wrong. You can use Sen SEO as a checklist on your own blog. Go through this process after each new post, and you can stay in Google’s good SEO graces.

Let me introduce you to Pixlr Online Editor. This sweet tool contains featured like Photoshop (layers, text, special effects) and allows you to edit from a URL, your computer, or just create a new image.

Hi there. This is Cenay coming at you with another unscripted video. Today I want to take a look at a new utility I found on the Internet to help you edit images, capture images, crop them, and do really quick image editing without the need to own something like Photoshop or Fireworks.

It’s all online. If you are one of my students, in the past I’ve shown you an online utility called Picnik. Today I want to show you one that’s actually I think a little better. I’m going to go to normal Google. Let’s start at the images here, and I’m going to type in “Pixlr.” That will take you to the Pixlr.com webpage. So go ahead and click there. Now, there are a
couple of different elements to this.

First of all, you can use this without installing anything on your computer. You simply click to go to the Editor, and you tell the editor where to get an image. Do you want to create a new one? Do you want to open one from your computer? Do you want to open one from a URL? Or do you want to open one from your library there on Pixlr, Facebook, or some other library?

All of those will work right out of the box. Now I also recommend an add-on that you can add to your Firefox installation which will give you a tool over here that you can put either in your sidebar, now I have sidebar widget here, but it could also be right up here. Any toolbar where you want to put it. It’s just an add-on. Let me show you a little bit of how it works before I actually show you how to install it.

Let’s say I want to find an image about a woman and a laptop. I’m making things up here, okay? This is a pretty good image. So I’m going to right click and open that in a new tab. My predominant reason for doing that is here on Google, we’re actually viewing a thumbnail image, not the full size image. Here we are getting the full size image.

Let’s go ahead and try a view image. Oh, it did. Do you see I have a URL here where this image could be found? If I copy that URL, I can inside of Pixlr open that image from a URL and just paste the URL that I copied there. When I click “OK,” it’s going to go capture that image, bring it over, put it inside my editor where I can do things like add text or crop it.

Let’s say for example I don’t really want to show the laptop or the top of her feet. By default, I come in with the crop tool already enabled. If I just click, drag, and release and then press enter, I’m going to get that area of the image that I wanted cropped out. Now at this point I can, of course, save this image back to my computer, or rather, not back to but to
my computer. If I give it a name like “Woman and Laptop in Grass,” I can keep the quality about 80% and then save it to my local computer somewhere.

I’ll go ahead and save it to my desktop. Using Pixlr I was able to grab an image, crop it, save it to my local computer, and it is right here exactly the way I put it together. Let’s go viewer that. There’s the image that I captured. So just really easily I was able to go grab this from a URL.

There’s another feature that I really like and that’s the ability to grab an image interactively. Now let’s go to this webpage, and let’s actually get out of here and look at this website itself. Do you see how it has an image right over here? What if I wanted the image and what they had put here? I can use this new tool. I can click it, and it will give me a crop
window that I can move where I want it, size how I want it, and then when I click Crop,” I have the option to edit it, save it to my desktop, copy it to the clipboard, or share it on one of my libraries.

Now if I click edit, once again it’s going to open that image as a URL and place it right here inside my Editor where I can either save it to my local computer or add something of my own like add some additional text. Let’s grab the text icon, drop it right here, and say, “Click here for more info.” Make it a little bit smaller where it’ll fit. Let’s change the color
to make it red, something like that. Say “‘OK.”

Now if I select the arrow tool, I can touch this and then start moving it. I’m just using my arrow key to move it. Just real easy to use. As you can see, it has some features like Photoshop has. I can add layers. I can step back through my history. I can create a new layer. I can add special effects, and I have all of these built-in tools that I can work with.

If you’ve always wanted Photoshop but couldn’t afford it, or you just wanted a quick way to capture something on your screen, edit it really quickly, save it to your local computer, then Pixlr is the way to go.

Now let’s talk briefly about what it takes to get that add-on into Firefox. To do that, first I’m going to go to Mozilla’s site. Now this is a Firefox add-on. So I’m going to jump over here to the add-ons for Firefox. I’m going to search for an add-on for Pixlr. It’s going to come back with a couple of different options. Now, this is the one we want – the Pixlr
Grabber.

I would just click “Add to Firefox.” If Firefox asks do I want to install it, I’m going to, of course, click “Install Now.” I already have it so it’s already done. Last but not least is “Restart Now” to make Pixlr Grabber available to you. Once you do this, and I mentioned to you that I have a sidebar over here, a custom toolbar that I placed here, but let me show you
how to get it in your normal toolbar right up here where your other items are normally located.

To do that, I would press Alt + V to open up my file menu for toolbars. I’m going to click on “Customize.” No with customize, these are the toolbar options that you have available to you. As you can see, I have an icon of a hand when it’s here. If I bring it back here, this is what it will look like when you first come in. You can just simply grab it and push it
wherever you want. Now this places it in the top toolbar. I actually want it in my side toolbar, right over here.

I’m just grabbing it and putting it wherever I want. Then when I click “Done,” that toolbar is now available to me. With this tool bar, once again, click the Grabber, move my crop window to wherever I want, size it to wherever I want, and then when I click “Crop,” it will grab that image and allow me to edit it.

I hope this video has helped you see one of the really cool features available in Firefox and a new screen capture utility if you’re not looking to pay for one and you just want a quick photo editor. Until next time, this is Cenay signing off saying happy blogging.

My New Office

Well, it has taken much longer than I had hoped.. and I ran into a problem or two, but it’s done.

That’s right, my new office is ready to move into. Over the last 2 weeks, I have removed shelves, filed holes, sanded walls, washed the drywall dust, swept, scrapped, painted walls and electrical outlets, replaced cover plates and laid carpet. The images below are just a few of the *where I started* to *where I ended up*.

I start moving in on Sunday night after Raven’s 7th birthday bash. Perhaps Monday, depending on how tired this old granny is.

A Few Particular’s

The room is 11.5′ x 16′. I purchased a *end of roll piece* that was marked 12′ x 17.8′ – only to discover it was mis-marked. It was too narrow by 6″. Since 1/3rd of my office will be storage (complete with shelves and it’s own door), I wasn’t too worried. Just turn the carpet, cut and have bare concrete in the storage side, right?

Well, sorta. It would seem I am as anal-retentive in my storage space as I am in my office space. So I spent three days turning, cutting and matching the two remaining pieces until 100% of the floor was carpeted and it looks as good as it can look. What can I say? I am just hard-wired that way.
I have one more plug to replace (I was short when the electrician (my son-in-law) was present)
I have to re-hang the blinds in the three windows. One of the blinds looked like it was melted, so I will be asking the property management company what to do there.
I have to paint the little piece of wood added to block out the A/C unit since that was added after the paint job. Whoops.
This was so much easier when I was younger!

$328.79: Total spent. Having my office NOT in the spare room, Priceless.

WordPress Plugins: WP eStore Setup

I recently started using a new Plugin, which I really love. I love it so much in fact, I have been recommending it to those that offer something for sale on their blog.

This plugin adds the ability to create products and “add to cart” features really easily. One step checkout? Piece of cake. Fancy summary for the product description? It’s all here in WP eStore Plugin.

Now, I spend a lot of time messing around with plugins so I have a fairly good grasp of feature sets, what’s possible and what has to be programmed, so a friend of mine asked me for a video of how to add new products to her blog. I was happy to oblige.

WordPress Menus & Widgets Working Together

WordPress Menu Introduced

When WordPress introduced the new menuing system in version 3.0, many of us were overjoyed. Finally, the ability to add anything to a menu, without the need to update the theme files. Just drag and drop into the menu container, and if a theme used the new menu system, it would be automatically updated. This included custom links that pointed to ANY domain on the web.

And any theme could be retrofitted to use the new menu system pretty easily. Pretty sweet for both we web designers and for the everyday blogger.

Crafting The Look & Feel Of Your Blog

Recently, I was crafting the look of my sidebar when I realized I was using both WordPress’ new menu system and the new Custom Menu widget. Seeing that they would work together so well, I decided to record the work session and narrate with some explanations while I did it.

Add Google Maps To Your WordPress Blog Post or Page

Install and Setup Catalyst WordPress Theme

A recent coaching session explored a theme my student purchased called Catalyst. His goal is to create a default blog using the Catalyst theme and then clone it to multiple sites. We choose Catalyst because he can change the look of the blog in seconds, without needing to know how to code PHP, HTML or CSS.

This video walked him through installing the theme (after purchase), and covers a few of the cooler functions available to him. It’s a short video, but I think one that will show off the features of Catalyst pretty well.

A few of you have asked, a few have just drifted off to find video help elsewhere and a few have complained. Where were all the new videos?

Windows 7 ate my screen capture tool. It’s true, I swear.

Once I upgraded my machine to Windows 7, my Camtasia screen capture software quit working. I tried new codecs. I tried reinstalling. I tried everything little thing the web had to offer – one of which blew up my machine and I had to reload everything again!

Finally, after more hours than I can count, I can now record and edit videos again!

So, to those of you who were patient and waited, I thank you. To those that left but are still lurking, I say… “come on back”. I won’t say anything to those that left with no forwarding address, they wouldn’t hear it anyway.

Understanding and Using Presets in Market Samurai

How to use Market Samurai’s new feature “preset filters” to automate your keywords research and analysis process.

Previously, if you wanted to limit the keywords that appeared in the list, you used a series of “filters” on the type of data you wanted to limit on.

For example, after I ran a keyword generation list, I would then ask Market Samurai to only show me keywords in my list that had competing sites of less than 30,000.

Now, with Market Samurai’s new feature, you select a “preset” and all your little filter tweaks are applied. Don’t see one? Set your filters once, and then save the new preset.

This video walks you exactly how and why to use Market Samurai’s new Preset Filters feature.

FYI: My standard filters were:

SEOT (SEO Traffic) of minimum 80

PBR (Phrase-to-Broad ratio) of minimum 15(%)

SEOTC (SEO Title Competition) of maximum 30000

No matter.

Today, I share a video I created just to share some of the *must have’s* with you, and exactly how to set them up.

WP-DBManager

Starts at 3:24
A WordPress plugin for maintenance, designed to backup your blog’s database on a schedule that you setup. It will optionally email that backup to you, in addition to saving it on your server. This plugin also contains features to allow you to optimize your database on a schedule, or repair or restore your database via the built in control panel. The WP-DBManager WordPress plugin will protect your asset by sending you a backup daily.

In the event of a server hack or crash, you will need to restore your database back to a good version. Don’t wait until you need to restore a database to load and setup this plugin. Set it up now, and let it run so when you do need it, it is already there

This WordPress plugin allows you to setup custom messages that will be sent out to people that comment on your blog. You can set up a schedule, series of messages and define the probabilities for each message. The Thank Me Later WordPress plugin will make your visitors feel pampered.

Some of the features of Elegant Themes that I love are the shortcodes and ePanel features. Shortcodes allow you to quickly bring in beautiful buttons or tabs, without coding. The ePanel allows you to turn on or off categories that are dislpayed in a variety of places.

An autoresponder is a critical piece of the successful Internet Marketing puzzle. You need the ability to follow up with your potential clients over time.

An autoresponder allows you to create your *perfect presentation*, and deliver it in bite size pieces over time. Each contact with your prospect brings you one step closer to having them *know, like and trust* you. When they know, like and trust you, they are more inclined to purchase from you.

Not all autoresponders are created equal though. Some are easy to setup, but aren’t able to deliver your content to your list due to ISP blocking. Traffic Technique: Blog Commenting

Once your Authority Niche Site is built and you are in the habit of adding content regularly, it’s time to turn on the traffic tap and start visitors flowing to your site.

Now, before you get all giddy about a flood a traffic in the next 2 days, let me explain this technique does have long term benefits, but it’s a slow start. It requires consistent effort on your part. However, done right, this can literally open up a flood of traffic — over time.

Each blog comment you leave counts as an inbound link, and as you probably already know, Google counts those inbound links as a *vote* for your site, based on the anchor text, the relevancy of the site that contains the link to your site, and a few other factors. In other words, select the sites you comment on with care.

This video will show you how to find blogs worth commenting on, and a couple of techniques you can use to be one of the first to comment on a new post… this is the *sweet spot* when you comment since your comment is seen right after the blog post.

We discuss Comment Sniper, Google RSS Reader, and Feedly as methods to find the content to comment on. And since time management is a necessary ingredient to your online success, we discuss one simple tool that will help you stay on task, on target.

Before you blow off this technique, let me explain about a case study I did. In 30 days, I placed comments on related niche blogs. When I started, my Alexa rank was 2+ million. When I ended the case study, my Alexa rank was 400K. It’s all about consistent action to drive traffic.

Each link will be judged on anchor text, link age, domain age, page age, relevancy, and all the other factors that every other inbound link is judged by. Do they pass PageRank? Do they affect PageRank? A resounding yes to both.

When it comes to link building, you need to think long term.

WordPress is really some amazing software. It’s open source. It’s free. It totally rocks!

And one thing that WordPress did really well, was allow an open-ended hook system, so other developers could add to the features of WordPress. These additional little feature-sets are called Plugins.

Want to back up your WordPress database? There’s a plugin for that. Want to thank your commenters with a special email or downloadable gift? There’s a plugin for that.

WordPress is easy to use but the plugin system isn’t entirely intuitive yet. (Just hang on, I am sure more advanced features are coming) So, I created a video showing you how to find, install and setup a WordPress plugin. Though I use one particular plugin during this video, the concept the exactly the same for all the plugins available to you.

And there are a LOT of plugins available.

There are literally thousands of plugins that can extend the features of WordPress. If you can conceive it, there is probably a plugin to handle it. In fact, I wrote a book on the whole subject. Install Skype

I guess before I explain how to install Skype, I should probably explain what the hell it is. In a nutshell, Skype is Instant Messaging and Voice over Internet calling in one sweet little package.

It’s software you install on your computer and it sits quietly on your desktop, waiting for you to need it.

I use it to speak with clients from all around the globe, from Australia to the United Kingdom. This saves me some serious coin since International Calls can be quite expensive. Sharing my desktop with a client? No problem. Video conference? Skype has that.

My clients also use the Instant Messaging feature to ask questions between scheduled sessions and get an immediate* answer. (*immediate being a relative term since I might be on the phone. In that case, I drop them a note that I will be with them shortly)

Yes, I am aware that Yahoo, MSN, ICQ and AOL all have Instant Messaging as well. And a few of them are starting to also allow audio conferencing. I just find that Skype offers a bit more in the way of features. It also offers me a choice to record my Skype calls with an optional third party recorder.

You hear me ranting and raving about Headspace2 – an SEO plugin that helps Google find you. I have told you stories about how I have gotten posts on the first page of Google in under an hour. And still you don’t believe.

I posted to one of my blogs and within 7 minutes, was on the first page of Google. #1 for seven different terms, #2 for another, and #3 for another. Unblock New Category In Elegant Theme

If you have purchased the marvelous theme club subscription from Elegant Themes, congratulations, you made a great decision for your professional blogging appearance. In fact, this theme is one of the themes available at Elegant Themes (it’s called eVid).

If this is your first experience with a premium theme, you are in for a pleasant experience. It is easier to use than most premium theme, and provides more options.

There is a *quirk* though, that you should be aware of.

By default, all new categories are “disabled” from appearing on the home page. They are also disabled from appearing in the list of categories shown on most blogs. To allow them to show up, you must update your theme options.

Upgrade From WordPress.com To Self-Hosted .Org

Many first time bloggers start out on WordPress.com, only to discover they are limited in options, plugins, advertising and flexibility. When that happens, it’s time to step up your game and go with a mature blogging platform. I highly recommend WordPress.org – the self-hosted option of the popular blogging software.

With the self hosted option, you no longer have anyone telling you what you can and can’t include for advertising, plugins, or content.

This video shows you how to take a WordPress.com blog and move it – or upgrade it – to a self-hosted, no limits, rocking and ready to conquer the world blog. Okay, that might be overstating it a little, but it definitely has more options!

A few assumptions:

On one of the blogs I just created for a client, we added a photo gallery to share some of the photo’s taken at the client’s site. Since we wanted the visitor to stay on the blog as long as possible, we decided to lightbox the photo’s when clicked to enlarge the image, without moving them off the page.

This video shows you how to upload the images into the media library, insert thumbnail images, link them to larger images and add some captions and titles for the SEO benefit and visitor experience.

Adding Events To WordPress

As an online blogging coach, I am exposed to a LOT of different types of blogs. In fact, I setup a lot of different type blogs. Recently, I was working for a client creating a blog for her *group*, and they needed a special event calendar.

Well, WordPress Plugins to the rescue.

I found a great plugin that allows you to add events, display them both on a full page calendar, and in a vavriety of ways on the side bar. Sallie Roberts of the El Minya Court Lady Shriners was gracious enough to let me record our online session and place it here.

This video details the steps to create a new event with the plugin, find and attach a thumbnail image (for this theme) and use WordPress’ Add an Image feature to get that image online.We discuss a couple of techniques for the events and a couple methods on the images.

Change DNS Video Tutorial

When you purchase a new domain, but have your hosting account with another company, you will need to update your DNS server names.

The typical hosting company says something like change your DNS to ns17.hostingcompanyname.com and ns18.hostingcompanyname.com. That’s it. That’s pretty much all most will tell you. Now what?

You must update the named servers on your registrar account for that new domain, to match the named servers for your hosting account.

This video will show you how using GoDaddy as the registrar. The Named servers were sent via email (or posted to your hosting account) so it pretty much doesn’t matter which hosting account you use. And if your registrar isn’t GoDaddy, the process will be similar. You should be able to figure it out from here.

Headspace2 For Multipost Page Meta Tags

As you know, Headspace2 allows you to select the exact description, keywords and even browser title that will be used in the meta tags for the web page where that post is displayed. However, what do you do when the user clicks on a category or archive that dislpays more than one post?

Naturally, Headspace has got you covered.

When you install Headspace, it adds new fields to the category edit feature, where you can define the exact description you want to use.

Want to just rely on the default added for the Global settings? No problem. In fact, there are so many options available to you on Headspace, that it took more than an hour to cover them all where everyone could understand.

WordPress Posting Technique: From Concept To Published

I recorded a recent coaching session that went into quite a bit of detail on how to get an idea or concept from your head to your blog. In this video, my student had written his post content into Word, and we took that *draft* and published it on the web.

Now, while that sounds really simple, below are a few of the things we covered during that process. And just for the record, this certainly isn’t everything we covered in this hour long *Empowering You* video.

Unzip Files On Vista – Correctly

I know, you used to know how to unzip files, right? Then along comes Vista and everything changes. Your drag and drop no longer works. Right click and extract and Vista complains about duplicate files. It’s crazy.

A friend recently ran into this problem trying to unzip a template file I sent him.

After several frustrating minutes we figured out how to do it so Vista doesn’t complain and we got what we wanted. This video shows the end result. The right way to unzip files on Vista.

Moving A Blog

WordPress: Create Full Width Page Template

Most blog themes come with a page template that includes the sidebar, much like the home page.

There are situations where you might not want to include the sidebar, as in the case of adding an Amazon Store page to your blog. In that case, it’s more important to be able to display the Amazon sidebar, which contains options for additional searches on Amazon.

But if your blog theme doesn’t have a *full width* page template, are you stuck? No way. It actually much simpler than you might realize to create it yourself. Most of the work has already been done for you! Copy a template file that already exists, make a couple of edits and viola! You have a new WordPress full page template. Ready?

But for professional looking “gallery” style videos all related to a single topic and all the built in functionality like auto play, borders on each video or playing each within the same “space” — then you really want to go get Tubepress.

With Tubepress, you set a few options (covered in a different video) and add a little snippet of code to your post, and Bam! You have a visitor magnet. A gallery of videos your readers can see, all collected into one place. Your place.

There are two really cool (and in my opinion important) options for collecting those videos together… Keyword and Playlist.

Tubepress Keyword List Option:

You can use the “shortcode” to insert the gallery directly into a page or post based on keywords. Just separate your keywords by commas and off you go. Hundreds, even thousands of videos will be returned and displayed in your page or post. The standard shortcode for this is shown below.

Tubepress Playlist Option:

The second, and more important (again, in my humble opinion) method is to use the Playlist option. This allows you to pre-vet the videos you want to appear on your page or post, add them to a playlist and display only the videos you want. The standard shortcode for this is shown below:

While there are other options list all videos from a particular YouTube user or just the most recently viewed videos, Keyword and Playlist represent the single quickest way to serve up videos to your target audiene with a minimum of fuss.

Our Authority Niche site is coming along. We have a few posts, the beginning of a store and the theme is shaping up.

Before we start sending a truck load of traffic, we need to find our ethical bribe, get our AWeber list campaign built, and complete our list settings.

Adding the messages will take a little time, but for today, we will add just the welcome message they will receive when they confirm their name and email address.

As you know, there are really only three steps to be successful online:

Build a List
Build a Relationship with that list
Market to that list

And while that all sounds like an over simplification, when you boil it all down, that’s whats at the core of all successful online marketers. It’s the single biggest ingredient to web success.

So, getting your ethical bribe right, your auto responder setup and your follow up messages fine tuned is basic to step 1, build your list.

Turbo Twitter Tool: Hootsuite

If you Twitter at all, then you should check out the Hootsuite Twitter Tool. Multiple accounts, multiple tabs, multiple groups, multiple columns, amazing flexibility.

Want to monitor a Twitter *stream* on a keyword and publish it on your blog or website? No problem. Just give Hootsuite your keywords and click. Hootsuite gives you the snippet of code to add to your sidebar or widget.

Want to publish Tweet’s from multiple accounts at the same time? Five hours from now? Again, no problem.

Stop Leaking Your SEO And Losing Visitors: Redirection

Over time, your blog evolves (hopefully). This means category names change, posts are updated, files move or subdirectories are deleted. What happens when someone clicks a link to a post or file that is no longer there?

They get a 404 Error.

Even with a Custom 404 Error Page, you didn’t deliver the content they thought they were getting. So they might leave.

And if you published that link in a number of places (as you should be doing), you now have *deadlinks* that aren’t getting your visitors to the content you promised them.

You can stop the leaks, plug the holes and deliver the content you promised, no matter where it moved to, even a new domain.

Watch the video and then go grab the Redirection Plugin and start plugging up the holes that evolution leaves behind.

Now that you are getting some traffic to your blog, it’s time to start monetizing that traffic. And while you have several options (like Clickbank, Google Adsense, Affiliate products), they all require getting the ad’s to display on your blog.

And while you can hack your theme, posts and pages to stuff ads where ever you want, for the non-programmer, that method is a little scary.

Fortunately, there are other options.

Today’s video covers a WordPress plugin called Who Sees Ads that not only allows you to cut and paste ad code from your affiliate network, it also allows you to selectively decide who sees the ad.

This plugin has settings you change to only show the ad to first time visitors, visitors that have been coming back time after time, or only visitors that arrive from a Google search. Naturally, you can also set it for any combination of visitors as well.

Today’s video covers a WordPress plugin called Max Banner Ads that not only allows you to cut and paste ad code from your affiliate network, it also allows you to add the links and ads to older posts, in your sidebar or pretty much anywhere.

This plugin has settings you change to only show the ad on the first post, all posts, only the posts named… and put it at the top, bottom, left or right of the posts or pages.

It even has a setting for randomly selecting the location within the post to help prevent *Ad Blindness*.

Delivery Methods For Your Ethical Bribe

You’ve heard that before, I know you have. Especially if you are marketing your small business on the Internet. Well, I hate to break it to you, but it’s true. To have web success, you really need to be able to follow up.

Without the ability to follow up with your potential clients or customers, you have only one shot and making the sale. They land on your beautiful blog full of great content and see what you have to offer. If your copy doesn’t sell them right then and there, then — as soon as they click off your site, they are gone. For good.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

You can offer them something they want, in exchange for their name and email address, and follow up with them over time. Then you can educate them over time about the benefits of your product or service.

A couple of things you should keep in mind though.

The *bribe* should match your product or service.
It should be ethical and meaningful
It should provide value
It should benefit them AND dovetail with whatever it is you are marketing

I think we can all agree that this is the best method to market your small business using the Internet, but one question I get a lot is, “How do I deliver what it is I have offered?”

If you don’t own Dreamweaver or another WYSIWYG editor, then this tutorial is for you.

This is an introduction to HTML using Notepad. While some prefer to use a WYSIWYG editor, Manually editing HTML can be a great benefit if you want to modify your MySpace profile, embed video clips on your blog, etc.

As you may have noticed, the theme has changed. Based on feedback from my loyal readers (that’s you guys), I am making it easier to find and play the videos. I will also be grouping them into series (where appropriate) and (coming soon – hopefully) adding playlists so you can group (and ungroup) what you want to watch in the series that YOU choose.

Anyway, all this is gonna take a little time and the theme test drive won’t work for me because there are so many custom options for this theme. So, I beg your patience for the next week or so. Install Revolution Streamline Theme and Insert Thumbnails [Video]

Add Page Peel To Your Blog

If you are doing any type of marketing from your blog, I have a cool little trick that will help you *engage* your readers that isn’t quite as obvious as a 250 x 250 *ad* placed in front of them. They don’t see those unless they are specifically looking for a solution.

It’s called a Page Peel effect, and it allows you to place an ad *under* your page. If the reader clicks the little link in the upper right hand corner, it opens the whole ad in a unique and *fun* peel away effect.

Converting An Existing Blog To Affiliate Theme

There are a lot of WordPress Themes out there, but none that could make affiliate marketing easy. Until now.

I recently purchased Affiliate Theme by Unique BlogDesigns to give it a whirl. Before getting the Affiliate Theme, I had to find a WordPress theme that somewhat matched my *market*, and then make extensive edits and upgrades to make it work. Getting the Affiliate Theme was like getting an *Easy Button* for affiliate marketing.

SEO Juice With Internal Linking

Recent articles on my main blog have focused on the organic traffic you want from the search engines, and how to get it. I hope you have been following along.

Today, I want to show you a shortcut.

I say *show you*, because this little tip is best understood with a video where I can show you click by click and step by step exactly what to do. I reference a couple of sites in the video that will be linked under the video.

Just to recap the basics of SEO and inbound links though, you should understand that Google counts each inbound link to your post or page as a sort of *vote*. A pledge of support or an agreement from your peers (niche partners) that your content is relevant to the topic at hand.

However, a little known fact is that links from your blog also count as votes. Now, all this is just from an SEO standpoint, but there is another benefit to all this internal linking.

More eyeballs.

That’s right. Your visitor finds something he or she likes and clicks to go read the rest. At that point they have demonstrated their willingness to *consume* your content. Great!

Now give them more.

This video will show you two additional techniques to keep their interest, deliver exactly what they want, and get a little search engine love in the process.

Filezilla FTP Client To Transfer Files

Find, Install and Use Filezilla FTP Client To Transfer Files

When you have your own domain, you will often need to transfer files between your computer and the Internet location (your domain). FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is the means by which you send and receive those files.

I recommend Filezilla for those on a budget (it’s free), and demonstrate how to find it, download it, install it and use Filezilla in this video. Personally, I use (and recommend) FTP Voyager for those that can afford it (it’s about $40) because it also contains a built in scheduler that will monitor directories and upload / download files automatically for you. For most people however, Filezilla will do everything you need it to.

Amazon Carousel Widget For WordPress Blogs

If you are an affiliate for Amazon, then you are probably familiar with their widget section. Like the aStore, slide shows, and special deal widgets, Amazon now offers a new one I really like. It’s called the carousel, and like it’s name-sake, it places photo’s of your *products* in a 3D round and round that the visitor controls.

When I came across this fun little widget on someones site, I immediately wanted one for my main blog.

Fortunately, I knew the person who had the blog it appeared on so I gave her a call to learn more about it. We got together on Skype and together went to find and create one for me. I recorded the process to find, select the products and put it on my blog.

HubPages is another free-to-use social networking site that allows you to publish articles, ad’s, posts, ramblings, photo’s, or whatever you want (within reason, obviously there are some restrictions).

When you are trying to get web visitors to go to one of your sites, this place really helps drive traffic for you. One of the reason’s is that Google indexes this site hourly, so any new content you add, shows up almost immediately in the search results.

Magnetic Sponsoring Backoffice Primer

WordPress claims a *5 minute install* in their literature and videos. Bull-crap.

Oh, I know, the installation part really is that fast, but there is so much more to a self-hosted blog than just the WordPress software install. You have to buy a domain, get hosting, create a MySQL database, download WordPress, extract it, upload it to your domain, install the software, then update settings and add a theme.

When I explain to those I am mentoring on *branding* themselves that they need a blog to help, most get a glazed look in their eye. Some just give up.

I set out to break it down into manageable chunks, in a step by step video (actually, it’s an 8 part video) that would help anyone, regardless of experience, create their very own self-hosted WordPress blog.

A gentleman in Brazil recently complained that his dial up connection was simply too slow to allow him to view the videos (without frustration ) so I looked for a solution. I think I have it.

I have begun rendering the videos into an FLV format (smaller size) and am making them available to download to your personal computer. I have also provided a *Player* so you can watch them offline. Not all the videos are rendered this way, but as they are, I will be adding them to the download page, so check back often.

I was recently asked to complete a *How To* video for a company called Tears Of Joy Video. They offer the really cool service of taking your photos (digital and paper) and building a video montage, set to music.

As a part of her ongoing efforts to make building a lifetime of memories into a shareable, beautiful video, she wanted an instructional video showing visitors how to organize and submit their photos to Tears Of Joy for their project.

So, forgive any references to Tears of Joy, but I felt this was a cool video for showing you how to organize, zip and send via email your photo’s. Great for parents to send pictures of their kids to grandparents living across the country or across the street.

Upgrade WordPress Version

One of the most popular blogging platforms on the web today, WordPress offers a lot of features to make "push button publishing " possible for almost everyone.

If this is your blogging platform of choice (as it is mine), then you will need to upgrade the "software" to the latest version whenever they release a new one. While the process isn’t "hard", there are a few steps. This video details each of those steps.

Overview of the Upgrade Process

1. Backup your database. Read Backing Up Your Database for a detailed explanation.
2. Backup ALL your WordPress files in your WordPress directory. Don’t forget your .htaccess file.
3. Verify the backups you created are there and usable. This is essential.
4. Deactivate ALL your Plugins.
5. Ensure first four steps are completed.

Do not attempt the upgrade unless you have completed the first four steps.

6. Download and extract the WordPress package from http://wordpress.org/download/.
7. Delete the old WordPress files on your site, but DO NOT DELETE

wp-config.php file;
wp-content folder;
Special Exception: the wp-content/cache
wp-content/plugins/widgets folders should be deleted.
wp-images folder;
wp-includes/languages/ folder–if you are using a language file do not delete that folder;
.htaccess file–if you have added custom rules to your .htaccess, do not delete it;
robots.txt file–if your blog lives in the root of your site (ie. the blog is the site) and you have created such a file, do not delete it.

8. Upload the new files from your computer’s hard drive to the appropriate WordPress folder on your site.
9. Run the WordPress upgrade program and follow the instructions on the screen.
10. Update Permalinks and .htaccess. Update your Permalink Structure and merge the custom rules, if necessary, into your .htaccess file.
11. Install updated Plugins and Themes. Please review the list of Plugins that work in Version 2.5.1. Check for Theme Compatibility with 2.5.1 and ask your Theme author for any new version.
12. Reactivate Plugins
13. Review what has changed in WordPress.

Okay, doing things a little differently today. This is not my video…

As we all know, creating a website and displaying on the internet for the world to see, is a very complicated process for the average person. A recent coaching session covered the SEO benefits of installing and using Headspace2. As members of that call will recognize, about 45 minutes was cut from this video. All the wasted time on technical difficulties is gone. Edit WordPress Themes – Add External Links

Most WordPress themes automatically add navigation links at the top that point to pages you have added to your blog, but did you know you can add to that list? Even if it’s not a "page" within your blog.

If you have extra web pages you want to make available to readers of your blog, you can simply upload them and add "references" to them in your theme files.

You can also include links to specific *high traffic* pages within your blog separately, or just about anything you want.. (within reason).

This 8 minute video will walk you through editing your WordPress theme "header" file (I’ll even show you where that is!) and have to editing your theme like a mad woman in no time. (Figure of speech guys)

Recently, a client came to the house for a bit of training on using eBay to liquidate some of the items at his house he no longer wanted. (I am sure you know how that goes)

He agreed to allow me to record the training session both for his own use, and to share here.

Dropdown Menus Using CSS

How do you make a pull down navigation menu that is all in CSS?

As I said before, this is not a beginners task and might not even be an intermediate one, but I will throw down on it and you can pluck from this what you will.

First challenge I had in answering this question is that it doesn’t lend itself well to the whole "video" thing, so I am going to publish an article, right here in the video section to get you going while I try to think of a way to make this into a video.

There are two methods to adding a navigation bar across the top of a web page. One uses Javascript and "events" to launch an action, and the other relies on the cascading nature of style sheets to define rules that are applied from the top down.

First, the goal… Here’s a sample from my other video site (which uses the CSS to build pull down menu’s). Those of you who visited my original site will remember that the Category "link" had a drop down menu. Since this wasn’t a "blog", I had some freedom in what I did. Here’s a screen shot showing the drop down under the "Category" link in my top navigation bar.

The HTML is pretty straight forward as you can see from below. It just uses nested unordered lists. It’s the CSS that makes it all work.

Please Note: In order to display the actual code (and not have it BUILD the lists), I had to use an image of a screen capture. Here is a text file that contains both the navigation and the CSS.

I told you it was straight forward! In fact, you have seen this many times before. Want proof? Here is that exact same HTML but because this blog doesn’t share that style sheet, well, you can see the difference. Please note: Since it is the exact same HTML, none of these links will work!

Now that we have the HTML written and know our goal, let’s get busy with the CSS. If you aren’t interested in HOW it works, just download the sample file from the link shown above and copy and paste into your web page. Play around. Just keep the sample file separate in case you need to start over.

We will use this section for the discussion so you might consider printing this part out.

Wow, that’s a mouthfull, huh?

Okay, direct your attention to the very first bit, that defines the overall style for the entire navigation bar:

This set’s the stage for the CSS to work by defining the list-style initially as none. Subsequent tags will override this default. After this section is just a rule for the font weight, size and height of the background area. Pretty standard stuff.

The next rule really get’s busy enabling our drop down.

#nav li { position:relative; background: #999; float: left; width: 10em; display:block; margin: 0; border-bottom: 3px solid #666; border-right: 3px solid #252525; padding:0 }

Notice that it’s position is relative and it floats left. This is the "category" link itself. It’s the very first "li" level. What makes the drop down work is the display:block command. This forces all the unordered list items into a "block" under the Category "link".

To be consistent, the next section defines display:block for the anchor tags as well.

The section that defines the li ul (the unordered list UNDER a list item within an unordered list), sets the position to absolute. That might seem counter intuitive but remember that position relates to the container it is in. Since the ul is within a li, within an ul, the position is relative to that item. (Whew, try saying that three times in a row).

This rule also refines the background images (replace with your own or remove to just use color), and the default width of the "box" that drops down. (width:15.8em)

The rule that defines the li li section (shown below) turns the float off, and defines the borders.

The rest of the CSS defines colors, font’s background and behaviors when links are hovered and are pretty standard.

My only other suggestion is to download the file, paste into your web page and CSS files and play with it. That’s what I did. I can’t remember the site I came across that used this, but I used the Web Developement add-on for FireFox to display the CSS (which I copied) and the page source (which I copied). I put them both into a "play" page and experimented. It only vaguely resembles the original page I found it on since I made it my own.

Update: Hey Christian,

Thanks for the question. First, you need to realize one thing about CSS and table-less formatting. Containers are everything.

Here’s what I mean.

With traditional tabled format, your table was the primary “object” that you placed content in. While it is pretty simple to do, it made for tougher “reading” when it came to your code. And everything had to fit inside.

With the new CSS method, you just need to build containers (div tags) and place your content there. So, to center your “body content”, created a tag called b_content (or something similar) and set the properties so that it has margins of “auto” and is the width you want.

Create a new tag for the navigation and float it left (ie: c_navigation) and set it’s width. So, div c_navigation is contained in b_content and floats to the left side of that container.

Most of my layout’s use something similar. A main container, and then two or three sub containers.

If this doesn’t answer your question, let me know and I will try to make a video about it, or go into more detail in an article or something.

Add an Opt-In Form To Your Blogger.com Blog

When you have autoresponders setup and want to add an opt-in form to your blog, visit here. While this video is specific to an Ad Group I work with, the "how-to" part explains in detail how to add this type of form to your Blogger.com blog.

I could get all technical on you and say it’s a collection of related "sites" that you provide hyperlinks to access, but I might scare you. How about this definition… It allows you to send visitors exactly where you want them. This video builds on the process started in Create a Blogger.com Blog, so be sure you start there.

Add an Email Account To Outlook

This video will take you step by step through the process of adding a new email account to Outlook using the built in wizard.

You will need to know the POP server and SMTP server names and account login information to make this work. While it only focuses on Outlook, most email clients are the same in terms of features. If you don’t know your POP and SMTP settings, please consult your system or ISP administrator.

Note: Generally, when you registered for a new email account, they sent this info in the introduction email, or provide the settings on the FAQ of their site.
