One of the problems that I faced is debugging web layer with respect to the directory structure of the default web archtype.

Here is the best method I found to solve this need:

I suppose that you already created a maven2 web project if not see :
http://maven.apache.org/guides/mini/guide-webapp.html

To run http web server I use jetty plugin by simply adding the jetty plugin to the pom.xml
http://jetty.mortbay.org/maven-plugin/howto.html

In order to validate this phase it’s possible de run the web app from the command line: mvn jetty:run and wating for maven to download the plugin and if successful running the application.

After that It’s time to configure eclipse for debugging the web app by selecting the Run > Debug … from the menu
# Set Main Class to "org.codehaus.classworlds.Launcher"

Go to the argument tab:
# Set Program arguments to "jetty6:run"
# Set VM arguments to "-Xmx512M -Dclassworlds.conf=[MAVEN_HOME]/bin/m2.conf -Dmaven.home=[MAVEN_HOME]"
(Replace MAVEN_HOME with the location of maven on your system)

Go to the classpath tab:
# remove the application from the user entries
# add the "[MAVEN_HOME]/core/boot/classworlds-1.1.jar" to the user entries

Go to the source tab:
# add the current project to debug

Now you can start debugging your application like you do it always

It is very interesting to set the –o option to the maven command in order to accelerate the fix/debug process.

I will discuss a good old way to use mod_jk on Apache2 to balance the load on multiple JBoss servers, there's also different newish approaches using mod_proxy or mod_cluster from JBoss that i will discuss in future posts.

So let's start installing JBoss AS, you have to download it from the official site here, i've taken the last 6.x release (6.0.0.M5) to the date i'm writing this post, anyway you can even take a 5.x release as it has no difference for what we're going to make later.

After downloading, put the file into your /opt folder and unpack it, you'll get a /opt/jboss-6.0.0.20100911-M5, we'll try to run the JBoss AS server and check if it runs out of the box:

# cd /opt/jboss-6.0.0.20100911-M5/bin
# sudo ./run.sh

Wait some seconds, you shouldn't have errors till you get the last line looking like this: Started in 51s:29ms.

Everything seems okay, now we'll start the second JBoss server, all we have to do is to copy the jboss-6.0.0.20100911-M5 to another server (i use virtual nodes over Xen hypervisor) and start it.

You can go with one server and install two instances of JBoss AS on it, but dont forget to change the listening ports of the second instance to avoid this kind of errors: java.lang.Exception: Port 8080 already in use.

Anyway, whatever configuration you've chosen, we should end with an architecture like this:

Before going to put the load balancer on top of these two nodes (tux1 & tux2), make sure your JBoss AS is working by pointing your browser to the JMX console link on the http://host:8080 page.

Everything is okay ? let's go to Apache:

I'll take the latest stable version of Apache2, i recommend you to install it from your package manager (Ubuntu's Synaptic in my cas) directly rather than compiling it from the source, life is too short.

In order to install the mod_jk module, you have to download the binary version that fits to your system architecture and copy the mod_jk*.so file to /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_jk.so and run this commands:

echo "LoadModule jk_module /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_jk.so" > /etc/apache2/mods-available/jk.load
touch /etc/apache2/mods-available/jk.conf

touch /etc/apache2/workers.conf

a2enmod jk

You should have no errors when running the above commands, that means the mod_jk is now enabled and we'll proceed to configuring it to balance the load between our two JBoss servers.

By the way, I've installed Apache2 for load balancing purpose and i've chosen to run it on tux1 node, this is not a wise decision since we created a SPOF node: if tux1 goes down, the whole cluster will go down.
This can be resolved by putting Apache2 in a fail over mode so when tux1 goes down, tux2 will take the job and run the load balancer flawlessly making the solution highly available, at Tritux we use many high availability solutions including Red Hat Cluster Suite which has proven its enterprise class grade service level with many of our deployments.
I will not cover this part assuming we want only to bring life to a simple load balancing Apache2 configuration, you can contact us for commercial support on how to design a high availability solution with JBoss or any other web server.
Below is what it should look like when going with a high availability solution:

Let's return to the configuration part, first we'll edit the /etc/apache2/workers.conf file this way

# Defining the workers list:
worker.list=loadbalancer,status
# first worker properties, we use the AJB13 connection type:
worker.worker1.type=ajp13
worker.worker1.connection_pool_size=20
worker.worker1.host=tux1-host
worker.worker1.port=8080
worker.worker1.lbfactor=1
# second worker properties, we use the AJB13 connection type:
worker.worker2.type=ajp13
worker.worker2.connection_pool_size=20
worker.worker2.host=tux2-host
worker.worker2.port=8080
worker.worker2.lbfactor=1
# No we set the load balancing config
worker.loadbalancer.type=lb
worker.loadbalancer.sticky_session=true
worker.loadbalancer.balance_workers=worker1,worker2
worker.status.type=status

And we'll edit the /etc/apache2/mods-available/jk.conf file this way

<ifmodule mod_jk.c="">
    # The Jk shared mem location
    JkShmFile /var/log/apache2/mod_jk.shm

    # Jk logs
    JkLogFile /var/log/apache2/mod_jk.log
    # Jk loglevel
    JkLogLevel info
    # Jk logformat
    JkLogStampFormat "[%a %b %d %H:%M:%S %Y] "

    # Our workers config
    JkWorkersFile /etc/apache2/workers.conf

    # The most important:
    # We will send eveything (/*) to our loadbalancer (set in JkWorkersFile)
    JkMount /* loadbalancer</ifmodule>

Restart your Apache2, everything is okay ? excellent ! you have a load balancer working !

Open your browser at http://tux1-host:80 (80 is Apache2's port) and you'll get the JBoss page in place of the Apache2 page, what happened ? your request is sent to one of the JBoss servers we configured !

Now you can deploy your application on both JBoss servers and test how the load is balanced between the two nodes, you can test how the balancer will detect failure on one node and keep servicing your application with no interruption ...

More to do:
You can setup as many workers as you have to get N nodes, the failover can be set for a preferred active node or even to a standby node.
The configuration of Apache2 and JBoss servers is not tuned enough for going to production, there's a lot to do before deciding to put a cluster like this in a production environment.

# ping
This command is used to find if the end system is reachable from the current system or not. It sends ICMP ECHO_REQUEST packet to the specified system/server/gateway/network element to get the ECHO_RESPONSE packet.
Note: ping uses 28 byte of data for header information.
In Linux it usually send infinite number of packets unless you specify -c option. To quit ping command press ctrl+c key.
Basic syntax for ping command is:
ping <ipaddress hostname=""></ipaddress>

for example      ping google.com

ping 0/ping localhost/ping 127.0.0.1 – checks if the local interface is working
commonly used options for ping are
-i <n></n> wait n seconds between sending each packet.
ping -i 5 192.168.0.3 will send ping requests every 5 seconds
ping -i 0.1 192.168.0.3 will send 100 ms interval time.
Note: Only super user can send ping packets lesser than 200 ms

-c <n> </n>sends n packets and terminate.
ping -c 3 192.168.0.3

-f flood ping. If interval is not given, it sets interval to zero and outputs packets as fast as they come back or one hundred times per second, whichever is more. Only the super-user may use this option with zero interval.
-a Audible ping. Beep when the remote machine is reachable
Note: This option don’t work in gnome-terminals

-q print only summary. This option will not print ping details of every packet. This option will print only the summary at the end.
-s <n></n> change the default packet size (56) to n byte.
-w <n> </n>terminate after n seconds. This tells how many seconds it should send the packets. After n seconds ping will terminate automatically. If you use both -c and -w whatever happens first will terminate the ping command.
ctrl + | (control key and pipe) Whenever you ctrl+i while ping is running it will print the summary. It will not terminate the ping, but just prints the summary and continue pinging till you press ctrl+c or -w or -c which comes first.
ping 192.168.0.1 10.0.0.1 62.1.2.89 will send ping request to 62.1.2.89 through 192.168.0.1 and 10.0.0.1. If one hop is not reachable in the middle the total result will be considered as failed ping.
-R record and print the route of the ping
-t <n></n> specifies the Time to Live. If n is 5 ping will succeed only if the destination host is within 5 hops from the source.

# traceroute
This command prints the details of each host it passes through when it tries to reach the destination host
the basic syntax of the command is
traceroute 62.1.2.89.
-4 or -6 forcing  IPv4 or IPv6 respectively.
-I uses ICMP ECHO when sends the packets
-T uses TCP SYN to send packets.
-U uses UDP for traceroute packets.
Note: Traceroute uses UDP Datagrams by default for probes.

-f <n> </n>tells TTL (Time to Live) to start. By default it is 1.
-i <interface></interface> This option explicitly tells the interface to use when sending the packets. If this option is not mentioned, interface will be selected based on the routing table.
-m <n></n> This option tells maximum number of hops to try before reaching the destination. Default value is 30
-N <n> </n>This option tells simultaneous probe packets to send. Default value is 15
-n is used to avoid a request to a name server. It will print just the ipaddress of the hops.
-w <n></n> specifies the time to wait in seconds for each packet. Default value is 5 seconds
-q <n> </n>sends n packets to each hop.  Default value is 3
-r option tells to bypass the routing table. If the destination host is not in the same network traceroute will not succeed.
-s uses an alternative source address.

Note: you must select the address of one of the interfaces

# tracepath
It discovers the MTU(Maximum Transmitting Unit) along with the path. Unlike traceroute even non super users can also run this command.

# host
This command is used for reverse lookup of an ipaddress.
-W <n> </n> wait time to get the response.
-t <type></type> used to specify the query type. query type can be one of CNAME, NS, SOA, SIG, KEY, AXFR, etc. If query type is not mentioned then host automatically selects an appropriate query type. By default it looks for A records, if the -C option is specified queries look for SOA records.
Note: If name is an ipaddress then this will look for PTR records instead of A records.

-4 or -6 forces IPv4 or IPv6 respectively.
-a will make a query for type ANY
-T forces to use TCP when querying the name server. By default it uses UDP.
-R specifies the number of retries. Default value is 1
-d/-v verbose output

# host -v wiki.linuxquestions.org
It runs in both interactive and non-interactive modes. If the first argument is – or no server name is mentioned it will go to interactive mode.
To get single data use non interactive mode as shown below.
nslookup 204.228.4.243

Use interactive mode if you want to get more than one data from the server.
use exit command to quit from the interactive mode
This command works both windows and linux.

# dig
This command dig (domain information groper) is a great tool to get DNS name servers. This is one of the very commonly used tool by network administrators.
This command uses all servers listed in /etc/resolv.conf by default. It can be overridden by specifying them as an argument to dig command. Users can set their own configurations in ~/.digrc file. But command line arguments have more precedence than the .digrc file.
Common syntax
dig @server name type

server – name/ipaddress of the server where dig command to query. Default value will be taken from /etc/resolv.conf
name – is the name to be looked for.
type – query type options are ANY, A, MX, SIG, etc., default is A
-b <ipaddress> </ipaddress>source ip address, it should be one of the ipaddress of your server’s interfaces.
-f <filename> </filename>read names from
more details : http://www.linuxmanpages.com/man1/dig.1.php

# telnet
This command allows you to log in from one computer to another computer as you are sitting in that remote computer and working. Once the user enters correct username and password telnet will allow you to use linux shell. You can use all commands whatever you can use from your computer.
Syntax for telent
telnet <ipaddress> [port]</ipaddress>
By default telnet runs at port 23. So when you run the following command, it will connect to the port 23 from your client.
telnet 192.168.0.8
telnet command can be used to test other ports also. If you want to test the status of HTTP in port 80 just run
telnet 192.168.0.8 80

if the port is not opened you will get the following error.

# telnet 192.168.0.8 80
Trying 192.168.0.8…
telnet: connect to address 192.168.0.8: Connection refused
The same way you test other ports like SMTP, POP3, etc., also.
Note : telnet doesnt not encrypt the data when it sends across the internet.

# ifconfig
One of the most commonly used command to get the ipaddress of the system
Basic syntax:
ifconfig
-a to list all active and inactive interfaces
ifconfig <eth></eth> will print only the details of the specified ethernet

grep “text string to search” directory-path

Examples

For example search for a string called redeem reward in all text files located in /home/tom/*.txt directory, use

$ grep "redeem reward" /home/tom/*.txt

Task: Search all subdirectories recursively

You can search for a text string all files under each directory, recursively with -roption:

$ grep -r "redeem reward" /home/tom

Task: Only print filenames

1)hibernate.show_sql ---- true/false ---- Writes all SQL statements to console. This is an alternative to setting the log category org.hibernate.SQL to debug.

2)hibernate.format_sql ----true/false---- Pretty print the SQL in the log and console.

3)hibernate.generate_statistics ----true/false---- If enabled, Hibernate will collect statistics useful for performance tuning.

4)hibernate.use_sql_comments ----true/false---- If turned on, Hibernate will generate comments inside the SQL, for easier debugging, defaults to false.

Since you shouldn’t have to open up the computer just to figure out what you have installed, here’s a couple of options for detecting the type of memory already installed in your system.

Using System Information for Windows:

This is a open source stand-alone client.A portable PenDrive application available for download.

Using the Crucial Memory Adviser:

This is a web based tool.Initially it will download a small appication to the system and gives a reliable information about RAM change.
