Mirada is a studio designed for storytellers founded by Javier Jimenez, director Guillermo del Toro, director Mathew Cullen and DoP Guillermo Navarro in December 2010 and has since collaborated with some of the leading creative minds across feature film, television, advertising and literature. Company co-founder Jimenez will discuss what being a ‘studio for storytellers’ means in the era of transmedia storytelling, highlighting projects that range from creating the 2-minute prologue sequence for “Pacific Rim” to a living storybook in the form the MirrorWorld iPad App developed with bestselling author Cornelia Funke.

Javier Jimenez Co-Founder and CEO of Mirada. Mirada is a convergence of perspectives focused on advancing the art and science of storytelling. The studio was built as a perpetual idea machine, a story engine, to engage broader audiences in better ways — and the highest level of this engagement comes from pioneering hybrid narrative experiences. In addition to overseeing day-to-day operations at Mirada, Javier steers the company’s business development, manages global sales and marketing, builds client and partner relationships, and cultivates the creative team.

Jimenez has spent over 15 years in production as an executive producer for hundreds of commercials and music videos at Motion Theory, the company he co-founded with Mathew Cullen in 2000. Motion Theory is a creative home for directors with a sharp visual and narrative focus. The company’s roster of directors ranges from award-winning veterans to emerging filmmakers, all sharing extraordinary visual style and the storytelling ability to transform creative potential into compelling viewer experiences across advertising and entertainment.

Javier has been heavily involved with the AICP and has also served on the Curatorial Committee for the organization’s prestigious award show. He has contributed award- winning projects recognized by D&AD, the Grammys, the Art Directors Club, AICP, the Clio Awards and the AIGA. Javier was invited to a position on the Chicano Studios Research Center Advisory board at UCLA. Javier was profiled together with Mathew Cullen in LA Weekly in an article highlighting the most influential Los Angelenos. Javier received his bachelor’s degree in Communications Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles. In addition to returning to his alma mater as a guest lecturer, Javier has been invited to speak at universities, seminars and festivals nationally and internationally for organizations including AIGA, Resfest (Italy, NY and LA), Semi- Permanent (Sydney & Perth), BYU, and AICP.

Directed by BEN LEWIS

The story of the most ambitious project ever conceived on the Internet, and the people who tried to stop it. In 1937 HG Wells predicted the creation of the “World Brain”, a giant global library that contained all human knowledge which would lead to a new form of higher intelligence. Seventy year later the realisation of that dream was underway, as Google scanned millions and millions of books for its Google Books website. But over half those books were still in copyright, and authors across the world launched a campaign to stop them, climaxing in a New York courtroom in 2011. A film about the dreams, dilemmas and dangers of the Internet, set in spectacular locations in China, USA, Europe and Latin America.

Ben Lewis is an award-winning documentary film-maker, author and art critic, whose films are commissioned by the BBC, Arte and a long list of broadcasters from Europe, North America and Australia.

Ben studied history and history of art in Cambridge and Berlin. In his twenties he worked at MTV, DJ-ed and briefly ran a record label before working on numerous magazine programmes for the BBC and Channel 4. In 2001 he established his own documentary and film production company, BLTV.

Ben Lewis has made feature documentaries and series on highly topical subjects, which have provoked public debate and influenced political decision-making. ‘The Great Contemporary Art Bubble’ stimulated an international controversy about the fairness of the art market in 2009, while ‘Blowing Up Paradise: French Nuclear Testing in the Pacific‘ (2004) is credited with influencing the French government’s decision to compensate its soldiers and citizens who suffered illnesses after working for on atomic installations in Tahiti.

Ben is has just finished making ’Poor Us: An Animated History of Poverty‘ for the global ’Why Poverty?’ documentary season and online campaign. The film will be shown on over 70 TV channels and premiered recently at the IDFA documentary festival.

Among his credits are ’The Great Contemporary Art Bubble‘ (shown on BBC, Arte, and at film festivals in Montreal, Vancouver, San Francisco, Palm Springs, Copenhagen, Florence (Lo Schermo del Arte), Cleveland, Minneopolis, Mendocino, Newport Beach, it opened the inaugural Tel Aviv Arts Film Festival and won best feature documentary at the Foyle International Film Festival), ’The King of Communism: the pomp and pageantry Nicolae Ceausescu‘ (Grierson Award 2002); ’What Brits Love‘, a five-part series for Arte about Britishness; ’Hammer and Tickle: the Communist Joke Book‘ (premiered at the New York Tribeca Film Festival 2006 and won best documentary at the Zurich Film Festival in the same year). ’Art Safari‘ (shown in the UK, Europe, Australia and America, winner of a bronze at the New York Television Awards and a German Grimme Prize in 2007). ’Art Safari‘ featured films on Maurizio Cattelan, Takashi Murakami, Matthew Barney, Sophie Calle and Wim Delvoye, among others. He also produced a limited edition ‘Art Safari’ film on DVD, commissioned by the Deutsche Bank for their exhibition ‘Affinities’ at the Deutsche Guggenheim in 2007.

Ben wrote a monthly column on art for Prospect magazine 2004-2010. His articles have also been widely published in the Evening Standard, The Times, Sunday Times, Observer, Financial Times and Sunday Telegraph in the UK, Monopol magazine in Germany and Programma in Israel.

MONSTER UNIVERSITY AT VIEWFest 2013

The popular comedy, which released June 21 in the US and August 21 in Italy, has earned nearly $700 million dollars at the worldwide box office. This prequel to Disney/Pixar’s much-loved Monsters, Inc. finds the big blue hairy monster Sully voiced by actor John Goodman, and the little round green monster Mike voiced by Billy Crystal as freshmen attending the first year of university along with hundreds of other monsters in dozens of shapes and sizes. During the film, the two mis-matched monsters learn more than how to be good scarers; they learn how to become friends

Director Scanlon joined Pixar in 2001 as a storyboard artist for the Disney/Pixar feature film Cars and later wrote and co-directed the Cars short “Mater and the Ghost Light. ” Prior to joining Pixar, Scanlon was an animator and storyboard artists for Walt Disney Pictures, DreamWorks Animation, Walt Disney Television Animation, and the production company Character Builders. At Pixar, he was on the senior creative team for Disney/Pixar’s Brave. In addition to writing and directing Monsters University, and to working as a storyboard artist and animator, Scanlon illustrated parts of his wife Michelle’s comic “Unmentionables. ” The multitalented artist also wrote, directed and produced Tracy, his own live-action film in 2009. Tracy is a mockumentary about a filmmaker searching for the person responsible in the shooting of the 1970′s children’s show host, “Tracy Knapp. ” Pixar directors Mark Andrews, Bob Petersen, and Teddy Newton made their live-action acting debut in Tracy, which won Best Michigan Feature at the First Detroit Independent Film Festival. Scanlon won Best Director.
