As I sit right now watching the Who Dat Saints lose to “America’s Team”, the Dallas Cowboys, I am pondering what a victory over the Panthers this Sunday could possibly mean for the Vikings. On a side note, who voted the Dallas Cowboys as “America’s Team”? I never got to vote, and I would have voted differently. Anyways, back on topic, the Who Dat’s are losing 24-10 with under 10 minutes to go and it means if the Vikings win, the Purple would be just 1 game back.

I’m getting ahead of myself though, because the Vikings still have to win on Sunday to pose any sort of threat to the Saints having home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Not to mention, the Saints just scored to be within 7. The Panthers are sitting at 5-8 and well out of playoff contention, but they’ve played well at times during the season. Hot and cold would be a good description of their play. Their games against the Cardinals, who they put a whooping on, and the Falcons at home were all-around well played by the Panthers. They’ve also had games against the Bills and Jets in which they failed to reach the end zone.

DeAngelo Williams is by far the Panthers’ best offensive weapon and it’s too bad that he has to face the 4th best run defense in the league this week. However, he is averaging 5.3 yards per carry and has 7 TDs while splitting carries with Jonathan Stewart. The Vikings will have their hands full with both RBs, but it does get a little easier as they can focus pretty much all of their attention on stopping the run.

That’s because Matt Moore is starting in place of Jake Delhomme at QB for the Panthers. He is just 35 for 62 with 2 interceptions and only one touchdown pass in the four games he’s appeared in, two of them being starts. He’s also been sacked 4 times this season and you can expect the Vikings to try and double that stat on Sunday with one of the best defensive lines in the league.

I expect Adrian Peterson to have another big day Sunday. The Panthers have the 26th ranked run defense in the league allowing 137.3 yards per game on the ground. Percy Harvin may be out again this week due to migraines, but they may not need him. The Vikings should be able to put up an early lead forcing the Panthers to throw the ball and that’s never a good thing with an experienced QB at the helm.

If everything goes the way I expect it to, the Vikings should beat the Panthers handily. This victory would not only clinch the NFC North regardless of whether Green Bay won earlier in the day, but it would also put the Vikings just one game behind the Who Dat Saints who just lost to the Cowboys. That means that if the Vikings win out and the Saints lose one more game, the Vikings would have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs due to division record tiebreaker (the Saints play their last two games against divisional opponents). I know it’s a ways out and it’s a lot of “if’s” but it’s now a much more realistic possibility since the Saints have done their part and lost one of the two games the Vikings needed them to lose.

Enjoy the game Sunday night folks!

Sunday was an exciting day for fans of the Vikings. The purple decided that they wanted to show up and they did so in a big way. In a 180 degree flip of the performance shown against the Cardinals the week before, the Vikings beat the Cincinatti Bengals 30-10 in dominating fashion. No individual offensive stats were sensational by any means, but the collective effort got the job done.

The big story was the Minnesota defense. They held Carson Palmer to just 94 yards and one score on 15/25 passing. They only sacked Palmer once all game, courtesy of Brian Robison, but Antoine Winfield finally returned to the field and return to the field he did. He led the team in tackles with 9 and he forced a fumble which led to a Ryan Longwell field goal to end the first half. He was a bit sluggish at times and that’s to be expected after how much time he missed, but his open-field tackling back in action was an excellent change of pace from the missed tackles we’ve seen in his absence.

The Vikings defense did, however, allow 119 yards on the ground, 96 of those Cedric Benson on just 16 carries. If it weren’t for the 11 Bengals penalties for 85 yards, maybe this game would have been closer. The Bengals were forced to throw early and often, both in the game and in each set of downs. Maybe Antoine Winfield being out was somewhat of a good thing, at least for the younger secondary players that had to step up and try to fill that void. They had a lot of on-the-field time to improve and that helps when the Vikings go into a a defensive scheme with extra defensive backs.

Rookie S Jamarca Sanford played well in the absence of Tyrell Johnson and was 2nd on the team in tackles on Sunday with 6 total. This bodes well for Brad Childress, who recently received that nice little contract extension, as every one of his draft picks this year have made an impact this season. Percy Harvin, who didn’t play due to migraines, has obviously been outstanding as has OT Phil Loadholt. But, Asher Allen, Jasper Brinkley, and Sanford have all seen playing time due to veteran injuries and have used their chance to play effectively. Each one has improved throughout the season and all of them have bright futures in the NFL.

Adrian Peterson didn’t run for a large total of yards, but he did run in for two scores which gives him 14 on the season. Why is that important? Well, it helped the Vikings win, but it also gives Adrian Peterson the franchise single-season rushing TD record. Congratulations to Adrian for getting the job done and living up to the high expectations fans set for him.

Enough talk about the game, because honestly, I’m very sorry I didn’t write about it sooner but I’m sure most of you are already thinking of this next week and so am I. The Vikings already clinched a playoff spot but they can clinch the division with a win on Sunday or a Packers loss due to the head to head tie-breaker. The Vikings will know the result of the Packers game before they play the Panthers in North Carolina on Sunday night. It’s one fo the first times I will ever be cheering on the Steelers, but honestly, I don’t think I need to. I think the Vikings can beat the Panthers on the road and they will clinch the division by themselves. If they happen to win to clinch the division, they can also clinch a first-round bye with a Philadelphia loss. A lot of scenarios are possible, and that’s why this is always my favorite time of the year. Enjoy the week folks, and look for a sweet game preview coming your way soon!

Nice leap AP!

This week, the Minnesota Vikings face the AFC North leading Cincinatti Bengals, or as I like to call them the Bungals. This year, however, they haven’t lived up to that nickname. They’ve played some sensational football and were a fluke play away from being 10-2 instead of 9-3 had it not been for the crazy game-ending TD by the Broncos in Week 1. The Bengals have a potent defense with an offense that can be explosive but likes to pound the ball on the ground. Can they find a way to beat the Vikings this week, handing the purple a consecutive loss for the first time this season?

When I think about that question, I’d like to answer with a resounding “No” but it’s really hard to do that considering last week’s performance against the Cardinals. The Vikings played really, really bad last week and they can’t have a repeat or they will be writing another scratch mark in the loss column. Considering how much the Vikings have struggled on the ground lately, the Bengals are not the team the Vikings want to face right now. Cincinatti is now 1st in the NFL in run defense, allowing just 81.8 yards per game on the ground. You could look at it from the flip side and say that this is a great test for the Vikings to see if they can bounce back and have a fantastic day running the ball, but if you consider the injuries to the offensive line and their struggles then it doesn’t look so promising. Adrian Peterson hasn’t run for over 100 yards since Week 10 and has only topped that mark 3 times the entire season.

Meanwhile, as the Vikings struggle on the ground, the Bengals have been succeeding recently. They have had a RB top 100 yards 5 of the last 6 games, and they’ve done it with 3 different RBs including their recent free agent pickup Larry Johnson and the rookie Bernard Scott. Their offensive line has been extremely efficient at opening holes and allowing their RBs get to the second-level of defenses.

They realize that the run game is their strength and have run the ball the second most times of any team in the league. The Vikings will need to bring their A game in order to force Carson Palmer to make plays with his arm. Another neat stat is that the Vikings are allowing just over 60 yards per game on the ground at home. Hopefully, the trend continues this week.

If the Vikings can get an early lead and not give it up via Favre interceptions or Peterson fumbles, then I think they have a good chance of winning the game fairly easily. The Vikings still lead the league in sacks and Carson Palmer has played far from mistake-free football this season. He has yet to see a defensive line as potent as the Vikings. He has 10 interceptions this year, and hopefully the young Vikings secondary can up that number by a few tomorrow. Or, this can be Jared Allen sacking him a few times.

There are still some major injury concerns within the Vikings starting lineup. In the secondary, second-year safety Tyrell Johnson is doubtful and CBs Karl Paymah and Antoine Winfield are both questionable. Percy Harvin is having problems with migraines once again and is questionable along with rookie offensive tackle Phil Loadholt. The only offensive starters not on the injury report are Sidney Rice, John Sullivan, and Naufahu Tahi. The Bengals play a brand of football that is gritty and exhausting, and I just hope the Vikings can pull out a victory without sacrificing too many more injuries. Get it done Jared!

What happened to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday? What went wrong? The Arizona Cardinals dismantled the Vikings in a 17-30 purple loss and proved that the Vikings definitely aren’t the invincible force many thought they were. They don’t have an offense that can pick its way through any defense. They don’t have a pass rush that’s unstoppable. No, they proved many things and none of them good.

I was somewhat worried about a game like this, and as each week went by without it, I became less concerned. I thought to myself that maybe this team was as good as it’s record would indicate. I still think they are one of the best teams in the league, top 5 material, but I definitely have them a couple spots lower than they were before Sunday’s beatdown. The problem with a game like this one is that it’s a formula game. What I mean by that is that now opposing teams have a formula to go by. They don’t just have a couple ideas, but a complete game plan they can use to try and do the same thing to the Vikings. The only good thing for the Vikings is that not many teams in the NFL have the type of talent the Cardinals do, so when they execute the same plan it may not be as effective.

The first thing I noticed was the lack of noticing Jared Allen. It seemed as if he was completely shut down, and for the most part, he was. They were using a lot of TEs on his end of the line to double team or chip with the TE to help the offensive tackle. They would then send the RB out to either block, or chip Jared Allen again on his way to running a short passing route. Allen was kept extremely quiet throughout the game and had a completely empty stat line, with the exception of a couple QB hurries and hits as Warner was throwing the ball.

The Cardinals, a pass-first offense with an unremarkable running game, ran for almost twice the amount of yards the Vikings did (113-62). Adrian Peterson was held to just 19 yards on 13 carries, and one of those carries went for 11 yards. That means if you take that run out he went for 8 yards on 12 carries, an average of 2/3 of a yard per run. How did the Cardinals do this? They did it by giving the Vikings offense a different look every time on the field. There were times that the Cards loaded the box with 7, other times where they went 3 down and 8 in coverage. It was amazing what Ken Whizenhunt was able to do on Sunday to confuse the Vikings offense.

Brett Favre had his worst game of the year, throwing his first multiple interception game with the Vikings. He went 30 of 45 for 275 yards and 2 TDs along with 2 INTs. One of the interceptions was just a ridiculously bad throw and he knew it. He should not be throwing the ball 45 times with Adrian Peterson on this team. I know the run game wasn’t effective, but you can’t just go away from it, especially early in the game. I understand when you’re down by 3 scores with time running out, you need to throw the ball and get quick TDs. But, when you’re only down by one score, you cannot go away from the run because you make yourself much too predictable. The Cardinals also have a fantastic secondary that includes two safeties that are asw fast as most cornerbacks. It’s always going to be tough to throw against Arizona, and I would have liked to see a little more persistence on the ground before completely shutting it down and going to the pass game.

Another huge downer is the key injuries to the Vikings during the game. Check out the NFL’s report of the Vikings players that didn’t participate or were limited in practice this week. The list includes 4 of the Vikings starting offensive linemen. It also includes Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin, Bernard Berrian and Visanthe Shiancoe. The biggest injury, however, is to EJ Henderson who fractured his femur on Sunday. He’s out for the season, and some people are saying possibly his career. I sure hope that isn’t the case, but you can watch the play below in which Henderson suffered that injury.

Hopefully the Vikings can come together and put a decent game plan in place to defeat a decent Bengals team this coming up Sunday. Have a good one folks!

Late in the 2008 NFL season, the Vikings ventured to Arizona to put a 35-14 beatdown on the Cardinals. Tarvaris Jackson showed up finally, and put up an impressive 4 TD performance. Adrian Peterson and Chester Tayor combined for 231 yards on the ground on 38 carries. They both were leading their respective divisions last year when they played and once again they both lead their divisions. But, this year is different. This year, the Vikings have Brett “The Silver Fox” Favre.

Both of these teams have impressive passing attacks led by aging veteran QBs. The Cards are ranked 5th and the Vikings 7th in passing offense. That’s where it ends, however. The Vikings have Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor going against a mediocre Cardinals rush defense. The Cards have allowed an opposing RB to top 116 yards in 4 of their last 5 games. I expect Adrian Peterson, with his recent “need for speed”, to have a game that will make people forget all of the fumble and benching talk. It’s geting old anyways, and I’m starting to feel like people just need to be negative on something so they pick on Peterson’s fumbling.

If you want to be negative about something, get negative about all of the penalties Minnesota has committed recently. In the 3 games since the bye week, the Purple have committed a total of 28 penalties for 192 yards. That is what everyone should be negative about. You can’t make those kinds of mistakes against a good team like the Cardinals. They can score quickly with a slew of talented receivers, including one of the best in the game Larry Fitzgerald Jr.

Enough ranting, so what can you expect out of this game? You can expect the Cards to run the ball about as much as they did last year, which totaled 7 attempts. No, I’m sure they’ll try a few more times than that but not much. The Vikings have the 2nd best rush defense in the league and the Cards have the 6th worst rush offense. I’m pretty sure that means Kurt Warner, if he plays, will be throwing the ball an awful lot.

The one thing I have to say the Cards have done really well this season is protect their QB. Arizona QBs have only been sacked 18 times this season, which is good enough to be 5th least in the league. They’ve given Warner, and now Leinart, time to find the open receiver and they have a bunch to choose from. From Fitzgerald and Boldin to even Steve Breaston, the Cards have plenty of options in the passing game. Word is that Antoine Winfield will be back this week and it is imperative he is back to full form. Fitzgerald and Boldin have the potential to light up the secondary the Vikings have right now. Winfield needs to be on the field this week, or the Vikings risk giving up quick scores to the speedy Cardinals receivers.

Even though the Cards have protected the QB, they haven’t seen such a stacked defensive line as the Vikings’. In addition, one of Arizona’s starting offensive tackles, Mike Gandy, is listed as doubtful on the injury report. Jared Allen and Ray Edwards should have a field day with whoever they put in to replace Gandy. Not only that, but this should limit the number of receiver options as the Cards will have to often use a RB to chip whichever side the replacement is on, eliminating the check-downs and screens. If they don’t, it will force Leinart or Warner to make quick passes which hopefully means bad decisions and interceptions for the Vikings.

Overall, I expect a close game that could go either way if Warner plays. If Leinart plays, I could see some early disasters for the Cards and a nice win for the Vikings. Hopefully, Peterson will have one of those games where everyone is reassured that he’s one of the best RBs in the league. Enjoy the game folks!

There have been plenty of conversations lately about Brett Favre’s supposed “December Wall” and Adrian Peterson’s fumbling problems. I have heard the same two minute dialogue over and over about Favre’s recent collapses in December. I’ve also heard this non-stop talk about Peterson’s fumbling problems. Some people are going as far as saying Peterson should be benched for a quarter or a half if he fumbles again. I only have one thing to say about these speculative ideas.

Are you crazy? I’ll start with the Adrian Peterson issue first as it’s the one that seems to be the biggest concern among fans and members of the media. If you really think that benching Peterson for more than a series is going to solve his fumbling problems, then you need to re-think how you evaluate football decisions. I get the concern, because over his short career, he’s fumbled about once every 44 rushing attempts losing possession about once in every 69 attempts. Let me lay some numbers on you real quick from the first 4 seasons of some RBs you may recognize. Walter Payton fumbled about once every 34 rush attempts. Eric Dickerson fumbled about once in every 30 attempts. OJ Simpson fumbled about once in every 31 attempts. I could go on, but why?

My point is that young RBs, even superstars, fumble the ball. They’re young, used to being able to blow by everyone they played against in college, and so they are used to having no concern about being caught from behind or having the ball punched out. All of this considered, you do not bench one of the best players in the league because he makes a mistake. You sit him out for a series, if necessary, as the Vikings did last week after one of Peterson’s fumbles. That’s the right decision, especially when you consider that the backup is a viable starter on close to 10 of the teams in the league.

Another scenario, however, was being talked about as well. What if the Vikings were up by less than a field goal with 5 minutes left in the game. Would you sit Adrian and let Chester take the load then? That situation is arguable and I would agree with either choice the coaching staff makes. That’s a judgement call based on statistics. You sure don’t want to bench your star players, but if one of them may cost you the game, it’s possible you may put in Taylor. This is one of those topics that is hot among Minnesota fans and I think there are arguents for both sides. But, I think you are crazy if you say bench Adrian Peterson without a scenario such as the one I just stated. You keep playing the same way regardless, because it’s what has gotten you to 10-1. Remember, without Adrian Peterson forcing defenses to load the box, Favre may not be having the season he’s having and the Vikings may not be 10-1.

The Favre wall is a great topic and one that I’m somewhat clueless as to how I feel about it. I’ve noted before his collapse last season with the Jets. He went 8-3 in the first 11 games and there were talks about the Jets not only being the best team in the league but also Favre being the leading MVP candidate. But, we also know that he was hurt last year and played hurt through the end of the season. At this point, we have to take Coach Brad Childress’ word that Favre is feeling great with no pain at all in that throwing shoulder. He’s taken great caution in taking Favre out in games in which the Vikings were safely ahead in the 4th quarter. I think a lot will be said in this next Sunday’s game about whether or not this “December Wall” is an actuality or a statistical anomaly centered around late-season injuries during the past few seasons.

That’s all for now folks! Enjoy the Saturday and look for my Game Preview coming soon.

For a second straight week the Vikings have shown their dominance throughout an entire 4 quarters. They did it this past week to a division rival that has a QB many in Minnesota clamored for in the offseason. The 36-10 victory just about ends the Bears’ playoff hopes, leaving them only extreme mathematical chances, and gets the Purple one step closer to clinching their own spot in the post-season.

The talk in the media, however, isn’t all about the Vikings. It’s been all about the Who Dat Saints, which I’m sure suits the Vikings just fine. The Saints beat a Patriots team that looked as though they were mailing it in this week and now everyone is contemplating their chances, along with the Indianapolis Colts, of running the table. Good! I hope they keep talking about that and forget about the Vikings. I don’t mean to make it sound like the media isn’t paying any attention to the Purple, because they are, but not nearly as much as the Saints. I’d much rather have it that way, though. Do any of you remember the 15-1 Vikings of 1998 and how the talk was that they were the best team the NFL had seen in years? If you don’t or it’s too traumatic to bring it back up, then let me remind you that they also went into the NFC Championship game 10 point favorites over the 14-2 Atlanta Falcons. Who won that game? Nevermind, it’s too painful. What I’m getting at is that the attention being focused on the Saints leaves the Vikings players humbled without the head-swelling that can happen when you’re all the media talks about. Head-swelling only leads to two things: 1) Migraines and 2) Critical, unexpected losses in big games. I’ll pass and I’m sure the Vikings will too.

Onto the fantastic game. The Silver Fox, once again, confirmed the fact that Brad Childress and the Vikings made the correct decision in bring him in. A stat line of 32 for 48 for 392 yards and 3 TDs isn’t too shabby. The only number that concerns me is the 48 pass attempts, but Childress explained this by saying they were just taking what the defense was giving them. I actually believe him, because the Bears were loading the box when Adrian Peterson was in and leaving decent receivers in man coverage. Favre made some throws that I didn’t know were possible and he kept firing even though his receivers had some early drops.

Percy Harvin is working hard at convincing people he’s the best candidate for Rookie of the Year. He had his first 100 yard receiving day of his career. Six receptions for 101 yards and a TD as well as 45 yards on the ground solidifies him as one of the team’s most dynamic players. He’s making tough catches in the middle of the field with defenders closing in. Not many rookies have the guts or skill to catch and secure a ball knowing contact is coming right after. He’s a triple threat (kick returner, receiving, rushing) and the Vikings should be grateful that he fell into their lap at Pick 22. No, seriously Chili…cheer up! Your team is 10-1!

The story of the game, however, was not the Silver Fox or Percy Harvin. It wasn’t Adrian Peterson’s rushing struggles. It wasn’t even centered around any specific player or team. It was the referees and their ability to throw a flag. I’m pretty sure they needed more treatment after the game than most of the players did. I’m really surprised there were no separated shoulders from all the times the refs went to their pockets to quickly throw a flag. Overall, there were 16 penalties and a number that were thrown and then picked up.

There were a few drives, in particular, that were extremely aggrevating. The drive which ultimately ended in a Visanthe Shiancoe touchdown was actually preceded by a nullified Shiancoe TD reception. The Chester Taylor TD run that was called back for a holding penalty on Bernard Berrian ended with a Ryan Longwell field goal. That drive actually had 4 Minnesota penalties and it was getting rather annoying. I get that you have to call them game as you see it, but at some point you have to let the guys play. The Adrian Peterson facemask was a garbage call because if you look closely, Hunter Hillenmeyer actually grabbed AP’s face mask and AP went to stiff arm and got his hand stuck in Hillenmeyer’s mask. If anything, there should have been two calls that offset eachother. It was a divisional game that was going to get a little rough, and the referees obviously didn’t want it that way.

Regardless of the referee’s attempts to nullify scoring drives, the Vikings pulled out a win and now are headed to Arizona to take on last year’s NFC Champions. It should be a fantastic game between two offensive powerhouses. Remember that Sidney Rice actually trained with Larry Fitzgerald this offseason, and so it will be an interesting side plot to see who has the better day.

Have a good one folks! Ragnar is…

This week, the Vikings take on Daaaaaa Bears in a NFC North divisional game that could send the Vikings to a 10-1 record and eliminate the Bears’ possibility of becoming the NFC North champion. That was a slim to none possibility anyways, but who cares? It would feel good to finally be on the giving end of the mathematical elimination. This is the final game of the Vikings 3 game homestand off the bye week and it would say a lot about the team if they can go 3-0.

So, how do the Vikings do it this week? They do it with defense. Jay Cutler, who many Vikings fans screamed for with their hands out, leads the NFL in interceptions through 10 games with 18. Brett Favre only has 3 by the way, which is least in the league among QBs who’ve started every game this season. With the return of Antoine Winfield and the fact that the defensive line is one of the best in the league, I can’t see a way that Cutler will pick apart the Vikings D. He hasn’t done that on a consistent basis yet, so no reason for anyone to think it’ll change against a defense that’s sacking the QB 3.6 times per game.

One player can help give the Bears a chance, but he hasn’t been consistent either. That guy is Matt Forte. If I said his play was inconsistent, I’d be giving him a compliment. He’s been ineffective in the run game and has only topped 100 yards once this season. It’s a little absurd and I feel bad for the guys who bought him high in fantasy this year, because he’s been a total bust. The only threat he does bring is his ability to catch the ball in space and run upfield with it. He’s had 5 games so far this season in which his yards receiving has been higher than his yards rushing. I like the Vikings’ LBs and defensive line this week to neutralize Forte and make Cutler win it by being a gunslinger.

The only problem for Jay Cutler and Daaaaa Bears is that they are going against the ultimate gunslinger. The OG of gunslinging QBs, Brett “The Silver Fox” Favre. Like I said in my last post, he’s definitely in the conversation for MVP so far and he’s finally figured out when to just throw the ball away. He’s not forcing plays and he’s not making many mistakes. It only took him until the last (or second to last?) year of his career to play like this, but it’s damn go0d timing. He’s made this Vikings team turn into a true offensive powerhouse and they don’t have to rely on Adrian Peterson to win games anymore.

How do I see this game going? I say it’s probably another quick start for the Purple, with Daaaaa Bears bringing it to within one score at half time. But, that’s when the Vikings should take over. They should win this game, and not have to worry too much about playing Favre in the 4th quarter once again. They need to keep resting Favre whenever they can, and T-Jack has showed that he can come in and manage a game.

The title for this post is a little cheesy, but it fits. I can’t stand the anticipation any longer. How far can this team go? Will New Orelans lose a couple and let the Vikings slide into the #1 seed clinching home-field advantage throughout? If that happens, with how well the Vikings have played this year in the Dome, I’m not sure many teams will be too excited to play them in the playoffs. Or, will they crumble and fall? Will Green Bay miraculously take over first in the division? Not likely, but if the Vikings go 2-4 out the door and the Pack win out…no nevermind. That won’t happen. At least, I hope not.

In my last post, Part 1, I talked about the great performance put on by the Minnesota Vikings defense against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. They were great, but also remember that they had a lead throughout the entire game due to the amazing show put on by the Vikings offense. Everyone got involved, from the rookie Percy Harvin to the Hall of Famer Brett Favre.

Let’s talk about Percy Harvin first, who is being mentioned in Rookie of the Year conversations nationwide. He had 5 catches for 79 yards and a score on Sunday. He’s ridiculously talented and it looks as if Berrian has almost become the 3rd WR option for Favre. At this point, Harvin is leading all non-QB rookies with 6 TDs, 4 receiving and 2 off kickoff returns. It was a gamble to take him in the first round of the NFL Draft and many criticized the pick due to Harvin’s offseason problems and the need for an offensive tackle. The Vikings decided to chance it anyways and ended up with being gifted someone who I think was a first round talent in the second round. Harvin’s ability to make defenders miss as made him a key part of the offense and one of the better kick returners this season. He has the second highest average per return among all players with 20+ kickoff returns this year.

Then, we get to Visanthe Shiancoe. This guy has really turned it on this year and is still one of Favre’s favorite targets even though Favre has begun to throw the long ball a bit more. Shiancoe is not in the top 10 in any major stat categories except the most important one, TDs, of which he has 7. That’s good enough for second in the league among TEs only behind San Francisco’s Vernon Davis who is also having a fantastic year. He is extremely efficient and 23 of his 33 receptions have been for first downs. I love having him on the Purple because he’s not just a great run-blocker but also a legitimate possession receiver and red-zone threat.

I don’t think I can wait any longer before talking about Sidney Rice. This kid is probably in the conversation for comeback player of the year. I know his rookie season wasn’t fantastic, but the difference between this season and last is mind blowing. Let’s just compare really quick last season and this one. In 13 games last year, he had receptions for 141 yards and 4 TDs. This year, in just 10 games, he has 50 receptions for 875 yards and 4 TDs. He’s still 4th in the league in receiving yards and 2nd in the league in yards per reception among players with 30+ receptions. He’s tied for 2nd with…Randy Moss…for receptions of 20+ yards with 14. He scored twice on Sunday and had 6 receptions for 89 yards. I watched his Twitter fairly routinely in the offseason and everyday he was working out with Larry Fitzgerald. Rice has put in his offseason work and you can tell. It’s paid off for him and the Vikings, and he’s quickly become the team’s and Favre’s number one option at WR.

Why don’t we switch gears for a minute before going to the Silver Fox? How about, oh I don’t know, Adrian Peterson? He may not be having the best statistical year out of any RB in the league, but I’ll take it. He had just 98 total yards in Sunday’s victory over the Seahawks, but the threat of him breaking a huge run opens up the passing game. And, although the conversation for the best RB in the league has become muddled with Chris Johnson’s sensational season, he’s still 1 or 2 regardless of who you ask. I’ve heard some speculation that he’s having a down year, but he set the bar pretty high for himself in his first two seasons. Among RBs, he’s 3rd in the league in yards per game at 99.9, 2nd in the league in rushing TDs at 11, and 1st in 1st downs at 49. Nearly a quarter of his rushing attempts have given the Vikings a first down. Eh, I’ll take it.

Finally, we get to The Silver Fox himself. The Hall of Famer has proven that Favre’s, like wines, only get better with age. He had 213 yards and 4 scores on 22 of 25 passing on Sunday…in just 3 quarters. At that point, the Vikings could rest him for the second week in a row and rely on Tarvaris Jackson to manage the game from there on. He’s the highest rated QB in the game right now and he’s in the talk for MVP. I think it’s a bit early to say that, because if we learned anything from last season, we need to wait on discussing that until the last couple of weeks. Remember, he led the Jets to an 8-3 record in the first 11 games and then went 1-4 from there on. But, if the Vikings can keep resting him in every 4th quarter, he should be able to finish the season strong.

Statistically speaking, Favre is having his best year ever. He’s 2nd in the league behind Peyton Manning in completion percentage at 69.7. He’s also tied for 2nd in the league with Manning at 21 TDs thrown. His best stat, however, is interceptions. I never thought I’d be saying that at the beginning of the season. The magic number is 3, which gives him a TD to INT ratio of 7 to 1, by far the best in the league. And for all of you out there that were mad about the Vikings not going after Jay Cutler, Cutler has the most interceptions in the league at 18. Thank God for the Silver Fox.

Well, this week, the Vikings have prepare to play Cutler and the Bears. Should be a fun game, if the last two have been any indication at how good this Vikings team really is.
