VikingsTailgate.com

I woke up this morning with hopes of seeing plans for our Vikings new stadium, tailgating Home of the future finalized. By mid afternoon, I listened to Minnesota Senator John Marty’s speech put me to sleep again. The long time, anti-stadium proponent from Roseville was allowed one more chance to vent before the final vote on the Vikings new stadium. It reminded me of watching the post-game interview of losing coach in a Super Bowl; a non-congenial congratulations to the “other team” in a remorseful tone. However, Marty’s words were more cutting, negative and less congenial. It was everything I expected from him. The words of bitterness, concession, whining and cheap shots were intended to scare his fellow legislators of the pending doom our state would be entering. His entire prose was full of reasons to NOT vote in favor of the plan. He was clear that sports stadiums don’t bring one new dollar of economic development to a city, that government is on the hook when the charitable gambling pull tabs and the electronic “flavor of the month” devices fail, bringing doom to the state’s general fund. In his, and others view, the plan to finance the stadium in this method will [...]

VikingsTailgate.com - Minnesota Vikings fans and tailgating antics!

VikingsTailgate.com

It looks like the new Vikings stadium might be dead again. Tonight, after a long day of political “Tug-of-war,” the Minnesota State Legislators appear to be blowing it BIG TIME, as they “try” to negotiate a compromise that will make both Republicans and Democrats feel safe on Election Day in November. That’s what it comes down to. With a legislative session scheduled to complete early next week, both sides are stuck in situation seemingly without compromise. It’s explained in detail by an article in the StarTribune titled, “Legislators are stuck on taxes, bonds and Vikings.” In my view, both parties want different things so they can count on the same voter support that put them in office in the first place. Conservative Republicans “blah blah” about wanting tax breaks and small amounts of bonding for just the simple projects in their districts (money for roads, buildings, repairs etc.) Democrats want that big sexy stadium for the state’s “bell cow” of professional sports franchises so jobs can be created. This will require a larger budget amount to fund said “bell cow” needs in addition to the simple projects. It’s a frustrating head spinning mouthful of budget rhetoric from both sides. Our legislators are ignoring [...]

VikingsTailgate.com - Minnesota Vikings fans and tailgating antics!

A week ago it looked like the tailgaters would not be getting a new vikings stadium, and now tailgaters may need to procure insurance for their lot vehicles again. Just last week, a state House committee rejected their plan to replace the Metrodome 9-6. Gov. Mark Dayton, club and NFL officials such as Commissioner Roger Goodell flew in and revived the project even as legislative time was running out. It is not all good news and it is not all plain sailing for the Vikings, however, but things are looking up. The day after the vote, last Tuesday, Dayton conceded that the Vikings new stadium deal might have to wait another year. The Democrat governor came out saying “I’ve done everything I can think of to persuade people and will continue to do so. If we don’t get it this session we’ll get it next session. Sometimes the difficult takes a while, the impossible takes a little longer.” Things are no longer looking impossible for the Vikings, but as with many deals involving elected politicians, it came down to politics. Even then, it is not as clear [...]

VikingsTailgate.com - Minnesota Vikings fans and tailgating antics!

VikingsTailgate.com

I am just watching the NFL Draft and surfing the web tonight. The New York Jets were on the clock, and I kept thinking to myself, I wonder if what Broadway Joe Namath is up to lately. Kidding of course, I did surf the web a bit, looking for information on their 2012 NFL Draft pick, when I stumbled upon a Tweet from the olld New York Jets quarterback Broadway Joe himself: Gotta love seeing wet cheerleaders — Joe Namath (@RealJoeNamath) August 22, 2011 The Tweet was posted in August 2011, and there has been nothing posted since. Classic. Speaking of classic, if you haven’t seen it yet, you have to check out the HBO Feature called “Namath” It is a fantastic snapshot into the history of the NFL and the era of the late 60′s to early 70′s. He was Mick Jagger in a football uniform. He wasn’t Pat Boone. And that’s what America wanted. It was December 9, 2001 after the Vikings vs. Titans game at the Metrodome. Before the game, fans were in the tailgating lots wearing lots of negative t-shirts and #84 jerseys with “blocked out” red tape to show their disgust with a recent arrest for possession of drugs after Super Freak had hit a parking ticket police officer. Back then there was only one Purple Pimp and he was a regular with the Vikings Tailgate.com spot in the lots. Like everyone, he was always welcome to come party, many of us did not endorse this type of opinion about Moss! In the report, Purple Pimp and other Vikings fans were calling for Moss’s head, and a Twin Cities radio station even had a contest for people wearing anti-moss Vikings attire. It’s comments and behavior like this that pretty much demonstrate why Vikes fans are known as being fickle.
