Here’s your weekly news update from The Village Church at Vinings:

-We’ll worship God together in Word and Sacrament this Sunday, The Day of Pentecost, at 10:30AM at Teasley Elementary. Mark Miller will lead us in singing, Jonathan and Curt will lead our liturgy and celebrate Communion and our friend Dr. Dan Siedell will preach from 2 Kings 5:15-19.

-All Sunday School classes will meet this week.

-This afternoon our friend Dr. Dan Siedell is coming up from S. Florida to give us a private tour of the High Museum and to help us to view art (specifically visual art) through a gospel lens. The tour will be from 3-5, and then we’ll eat dinner together at Carlyn’s house and have a Q&A with Dan till 7ish. Also, he’ll preach at VCV tomorrow morning. Dan has a PhD in art history and works as a curator, art critic, and minister to artists in S. Florida. He REALLY knows his stuff and he makes it accessible to everyone. This is a fantastic opportunity to include your unchurched friends who may be more artistically-inclined. -Face-to-Face is this Wednesday, May 22nd @ 7pm at Jana Adams’ home.  We will be hearing from a Linda Gray and Mary Beth Pierce and also doing a special prayer time for the new babies born this year in VCV.  Contact carlyn@villagechurchvinings.org for details.

-Teddy and Liz Cravens, who lead Young Life at Campbell High School, are hosting a fundraiser to help Campbell High kids who can’t afford to go to Young Life camp this summer. The Fundraiser will be at the Chick-fil-A on S Cobb Dr. on Monday 5/20 from 5-8PM. Come and enjoy some great food with your family and help kids go to camp! If you could please either dine-in our carry out your food that night; for drive-thru sales will not count towards our fundraiser! So bring your friends, tell everybody!

The Only Thing That Will Unite Us

Here is how it will work:
In Ireland, Tim and Melissa will walk their village neighborhoods praying.

On our end here, we are looking for folks to engage with Tim and Melissa by simply logging onto the website below and praying for that day’s requests. No walking is required on our end – simply prayer, guided by daily scripture readings suggested by Tim and Melissa, if need be.

So – to recap – we’re looking for a few folks from our church family to engage with the Palmers in their prayer-walk, Sunday May 12th-Sunday May 18th, to pray for them and to encourage them as they look to share the Good News with their Irish neighbors.

-Just another head-up, we got so much positive feedback about the room set-up from last week that we’re going to try “facing the stage” again this week.

-In response to your request to offer a daytime Bible study with child care, this fall we are partnering with Women’s Community Bible Study to offer a Wednesday morning study for the women of VCV, which will run the end of September through the end of April. The study meets at Peachtree Presbyterian Church on Wednesdays, 9:30-11:30, childcare provided. The format of the study is worship and commentary in the sanctuary as a large group (entire Bible study of about 500 women) 9:30-10:30, and then break into small groups for discussion (our VCV group will meet as a separate group) 10:30-11:30.

Here’s a thought for the week:
“Life is often (perhaps mostly) hard, and as much as we might crave a word of optimism, a little fuel for the part of us that longs to live in blissful ignorance (or denial), what we really need is not to have our humanity built up, but rather put to death. True hope – hope in God and his unbreakable love for us in Jesus Christ – comes only when we let go of our false hopes, and this happens only in the crucible of real, hard, life. In this view, church ceases to be a venue for fairy tales and bedtime stories, but rather a haven for sufferers. Church is the place where we come together to hear and tell the truth about our lives, our sin, and to receive grace and mercy. As Luther poignantly said, “If the mercy is true, you must therefore bear a true, not an imaginary sin. God does not save those who are only imaginary sinners.”
