As part of The Wildlife Conservation Society’s (WCS) ongoing conservation activities in support of the ecological recovery of bison and its associated capacity to aid in the conservation of declining grassland birds, we would like to invite you to a workshop on “Bison Grazing Management and Wildlife Conservation.” The workshop will be held 8 March 2011 at the Rapid City, SD Howard Johnson’s (http://www.hojorapidcity.com). As a part of this mission Village Earth has allied with Lakota families on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota to restore buffalo to the reservation. Village Earth is a part of the International Institute for Sustainable Development at Colorado State University. The Lakota Bison Caretakers Cooperative is a 100% Native American owned and operated cooperative association on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Members are committed to the restoration of the northern plains ecology, self-sufficiency and strengthening the sovereignty and self-determination of the Oglala Lakota Nation and all indigenous peoples. Bison from our own Zoo have participated in this important project. Ed Iron Cloud, Lakota Bison Caretakers Cooperative and Dave Bartecchi will share information about the natural history of the Bison and how this restoration project is working. The Oglala Lakota have had a historic and sacred relationship with the great Buffalo herds of North America. The Lakota relied upon the buffalo for their food, clothing, shelter, social structure, and buffalo occupied an important part of the Lakota cosmology. In the late 1800s the great buffalo herds, which once numbered as high as seventy million animals, were killed almost to extinction. In recent years the buffalo have experienced a resurgence in their populations especially on Native American Reservations as both a viable strategy for economic development but also as a symbol of the resurgence of Native American communities. Come and learn the amazing story of one of North Americas largest mammals. This is a special educational presentation for members of the sponsoring organizations and the public and features free admission. The Oglala Lakota have had a historic and sacred relationship with the great Buffalo herds of North America. The Lakota relied upon the buffalo for their food, clothing, shelter, social structure, and buffalo occupied an important part of the Lakota cosmology. In the late 1800s the great buffalo herds, which once numbered as high as seventy million animals, were killed almost to extinction. In recent years the buffalo have experienced a resurgence in their populations especially on Native American Reservations as both a viable strategy for economic development but also as a symbol of the resurgence of Native American communities.
