Event Description: Free-ranging bison once maintained habitats used by a diversity of wildlife. Today, fewer species of wildlife occur in these same areas. The reintroduction of bison on the landscape is a first step toward revitalizing grasslands, yet what more can be done to restore more habitat and attract more species? And can changing some aspects of bison management benefit both range quality and wildlife?

As part of The Wildlife Conservation Society’s (WCS) ongoing conservation activities in support of the ecological recovery of bison and its associated capacity to aid in the conservation of declining grassland birds, we would like to invite you to a workshop on “Bison Grazing Management and Wildlife Conservation.” The workshop will be held 8 March 2011 at the Rapid City, SD Howard Johnson’s (http://www.hojorapidcity.com). We are happy to extend an invitation to you to participate and we have funds provided by the Doris Duke Foundation to help cover your travel-associated costs of attendance.

Participants will include WCS wildlife specialists, and WCS and World Wildlife Fund climate change specialists. We are inviting a mix of regional bison producers, bison managers from conservation herds, and State and Federal Fish and Wildlife departments and NRCS personnel.

We are planning for the meeting to run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with lunch provided. If you will need to stay overnight, please book a room at the hotel (888-578-4657 or 605-757-4656) and mention you are a part of our group to get the $49 room rate. All compensation will be through reimbursement. Please understand that due to limitations of space and funding, we cannot accommodate those without a direct invitation.

Please RSVP to me as soon as possible so that we maximize the number who participate.
Event Status: confirmed
Event Description: AVAS is partnering with several organizations in our community to offer a very special program in September as part of the library’s “All Pueblo Reads 2010” activities.

Around the globe, Village Earth is allying with communities that wish to determine their own futures. Through their empowerment approach, Village Earth works with communities as they direct their own path of change and work toward a sustainable future. As a part of this mission Village Earth has allied with Lakota families on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota to restore buffalo to the reservation. Village Earth is a part of the International Institute for Sustainable Development at Colorado State University.

The Lakota Bison Caretakers Cooperative is a 100% Native American owned and operated
cooperative association on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Members are
committed to the restoration of the northern plains ecology, self-sufficiency and strengthening the sovereignty and self-determination of the Oglala Lakota Nation and all indigenous peoples. Bison from our own Zoo have participated in this important project. Ed Iron Cloud, Lakota Bison Caretakers Cooperative and Dave Bartecchi will share information about the natural history of the Bison and how this restoration project is working.

The Oglala Lakota have had a historic and sacred relationship with the great Buffalo herds
of North America. The Lakota relied upon the buffalo for their food, clothing, shelter, social
structure, and buffalo occupied an important part of the Lakota cosmology. In the late 1800s the great buffalo herds, which once numbered as high as seventy million animals, were killed almost to extinction. In recent years the buffalo have experienced a resurgence in their populations especially on Native American Reservations as both a viable strategy for economic development but also as a symbol of the resurgence of Native American communities. Come and learn the amazing story of one of North Americas largest mammals.

This is a special educational presentation for members of the sponsoring organizations and
the public and features free admission. Don’t miss this interesting presentation at the InfoZone News Museum on the 4th floor of the Rawlings Public Library, 100 East Abriendo Ave, Pueblo on Friday 24 September at 7:00 p.m.

When: Fri Sep 24, 2010

Event Description: Village Earth Honors Governor Bill Ritter at Third Annual Village Earth Albertson Medal Gala

Governor Bill Ritter to Receive Medal for Leadership in Sustainable Development

Village Earth, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting sustainable, community-based development around the world, will honor Colorado Governor Bill Ritter with the Albertson Medal in Sustainable Development at its third annual fund raiser, the Maury Albertson Sustainability Gala. Mr. Albertson was co-founder of Village Earth and the Peace Corps. Governor Ritter receives his medal for the positive role he has played in introducing and implementing the New Energy Economy in Colorado.

The annual Maury Albertson Sustainability Gala is an annual dinner dance that promotes sustainable development with the award of the Albertson Medal in Sustainable Development to an individual who has demonstrated a deep commitment to encouraging sustainable development in the U.S. or abroad. It takes place August 28, 2010 at the Colorado State University Lory Student Center Ballroom at 6:00 p.m.

“Governor Ritter has championed a new found passion for sustainability in Colorado,” said Jerry Kennell, Chairman of the Board of Village Earth. “Through his efforts we are seeing renewable energy and its supporting infrastructure rapidly expand and thrive. Throughout the state, companies with sustainable products and services are growing at a breath-taking rate. We owe Governor Ritter a debt of gratitude for the encouragement and support he’s given to sustainable development. We are honored that he is accepting the Albertson Medal in Sustainable Development and providing heightened visibility to Village Earth’s efforts to improve the quality of life in impoverished communities worldwide.”

The 2009 winner of the Albertson Medal in Sustainable Development was Dr. Bryan Willson, Professor at Colorado State University and Founder and Director of the Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory for his work on energy and the environment. The 2008 Gala honored Dr. Maury Albertson at his 90th birthday and awarded the first medal to Dr. Bernard Amadei, Founder, Engineers without Borders. Dr. Albertson passed away January 2009.

Tickets for the Sustainability Gala are $75.00 per person and $600 for a table of eight. For more information and to reserve, please go to: villageearth.org/gala/
