ICE AGE 2009

2009 in review from the New Ice Age

Mrs Monk is frequently in conversations with Leigh On Sea's youth, often found in temporary jobs stacking shelves in Waitrose. They will remind Mrs Monk of the days when she taught them English, and then tell her about their real ambitions. Surprising to me, is that even after all that has happened in the financial institutions of London in 2009, they frequently aspire to a career in the city. Perhaps they are impressed by the apparent immunity from hard times in Threadneedle Street.

2009 has been a bad year for architects. More architects were laid off this year than in any other profession. That is measured by the number that have signed-on for Job Seekers Allowance.

That is of course the immediate consequence of the sudden decline in investment by bankers who have withdrawn their labour, if they ever worked. Bad news today for architects. Bad news tomorrow for the construction industry.

I am looking for something positive to say about 2009.

It is almost over.

Happy New Year.

There is an interesting derivation of “Threadneedle” that is too rude for these pages but says a great deal for the morality of Bankers. Check it out on Wikipedia.

Then come back to shoestringonline.co.uk

We were dumped on by a Siberian snow storm featuring an unusual, if not unique Thunderclap, coinciding with the simultaneous Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.

The pictures were snapped by Mrs Monk on the morning of this event, before and after dawn. That morning the car got stuck in the middle of the road and I missed a game of tennis, where my presence would have brought about a change of outcome, of little significance to the remainder of the world.

Johnny Mazcko, the next big thing, and endorsed by these pages, provides the song, intended to mean something completely different, but nevertheless portentous.
We have an answer-phone which places a shield against would-be damaging messages, such as calls from her agency that may have an offer of troublesome work, or the dentist who might scold her for cancelling an appointment, or worse.

But if we do get calls, and no messages are left on the machine, and we get the “We do not have the callers number,” message on the 1471 service, Mrs Monk will spend hours wondering just who that was on the phone. In due course she would give up wondering just who it was and then begin the process of inventing disastrous events, the news of which she had missed due to her telephobia. She would soon become firmly convinced of some awful misfortune that would mean the end of life as we have known it.

Not only will she not answer the phone, but she will fight me to the death, in order to prevent me from answering the phone. Usually if both of us are in the house, I let the machine do the answering. It is easier that way.

Accordingly, a number of annoying anonymous 0870 calls were not answered, and Mrs Monk’s suspicions were aroused over a period some months, torturing her with uncertainty and stretching her invention of potential doom beyond beyond.

One afternoon Mrs Monk was not in the house and the offender got through to Mr Monk. The answer-phone nevertheless kicked in and recorded a surreal conversation with a lady salesperson, selling indeterminate goods. Check it out, if you will.

Metaphysical, and seemingly perilous, Ries Straver’s “Ball” is a fluidly looping video of a young girl holding a red ball that grows and shrinks. Set in an otherworldly background, the girl is at first ancillary and looks to be somehow controlling the size of the ball she holds but as the video continues the ball grows larger and larger in time with ominous audio creating a precarious tension as we wait for the ball to burst.

Ries Straver’s “Ball” is at first glance a simple study of tension and expectations but the foreboding characteristics of the girl elevate it to a level of auspicious uneasiness.

Advanced Beauty
18 Sound Sculptures
...........................................................................................................................................................
Advanced Beauty is an ongoing exploration of digital artworks born and influenced by sound, an ever-growing collaboration between programmers, artists, musicians, animators and architects.
...........................................................................................................................................................
The first collection is a series of audio-reactive 'video sound sculptures'.
Inspired by synasthesia, the rare sensory experience of seeing sound or tasting colours,
these videos are physical manifestations of sound, sculpted by volume, pitch or structure of the soundtrack.
...........................................................................................................................................................
The films embrace unusual video making processes, the visual programming language Processing, high-end audio analysis and fluid dynamic simulations alongside intuitive responses in traditional cell animation. Each artist was given the same set of parameters to work within; to start, finish and exist within a white space, creating a seamless coherence, all sculptures sharing the same white environment.
...........................................................................................................................................................
Using 1920 HD format, with 5:1 surround sound, the films transform the screen into a digital canvas,
how the minimalism of a single, floating pixel can be as engaging as the maximalism of an intense multicoloured explosion.
...........................................................................................................................................................
Curated by design studio Universal Everything and musician Freeform, Advanced Beauty is an international collaboration, taking in a family of artists from London, Russia, New York, Japan, Buenos Aires, Glasgow to San Francisco.
...........................................................................................................................................................
This collection of films in the first in a series of exhibitions, with upcoming commissions for the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and galleries in Europe, USA and Japan.
God Bless Darwin

19 September 2009. This weekend we paid homage to Darwin. This was Mrs Monk's idea.

Mrs Monk has evolved in a different avenue of evolution to the rest of us and is at the same time more God fearing than me, but she was nevertheless inspired by talk about the new movie "Creation", a biopic about Darwin which we have not seen, yet.

English Heritage have taken care of Darwin's home in Down, Kent, where Darwin tackled his theory which even today excites the established churchgoer in a secular UK, and also the fundamentalists in the bible belts of the USA..

The Monks speculated about how we arrived on this place on this earth, and the humanity of 2009 Homo Sapiens on the road to Down. A Biker passed us at 100 mph on one wheel on the A13; Mrs Monk caught him on camera. And when we arrived at Darwin's house a Land Rover took the last two parking spaces so we had to park in a field half a mile away.

We conclude from these events that mankind had evolved into a dangerous lunatic selfish species and somehow Darwin was responsible. We negotiated an entrance fee in the gift shop and Mrs Monk asked about Darwin Tee Shirts. When told that there were no such tacky offerings, she offered her best idea for a Darwin Tee Shirt, which should declare, GOD BLESS DARWIN.

Yes they were sniffy about Mrs Monk's money spinning idea, but English Heritage did allow the new movie to be shot on the "Sand Walk" and was also happy to sell fruit off Darwin's Apple tree.

Darwin got his big ideas on a "Sand Walk" from his house and his garden. Darwin saw what we saw today, and as he walked he tackled the concept of evolution that would change the way humanity saw the natural world forever.

Like everyone else Darwin was informed by the church. He was told that what he, and what we surveyed, was there by an act of God, and how persuasive that teaching must have been, when he saw what we saw today on the "Sand Walk". However, Darwin dared to think otherwise.

This new movie is set on a path of confrontation with Fox TV and other right wing American Hostility to Darwin's big idea, "On The Origin Of Species".

Darwin had to tackle the established church in England but also his wife who was a devout Christian and his conscience which was informed by science.

In America science has been conflated with the church in the form of Scientology, but Tom Cruise's Scientology would seem to me more to do with aliens in space and show business, than it is to do with science.

The movie "Creation" struggled to find a distributor in the USA until it did well at the Toronto Film Festival and will be screened this week in the UK and shopping malls in America, where they may expect yet more protest.

It's reported that Darwin's last words were: "get me the bible". This he would have had in common with WC Fields, and maybe they were both looking for loopholes. However Lady Hope who reported witnessing Darwin recanting his life's work, was later accused of not being present at Darwin's deathbed, Amen.

God Bless America. God Bless Darwin.

Parklife

Permission to Park

Parking permits are coming .......... to the road ......... where we live

The council have prepared a scheme and have put on a show at the parish hall. I sense that they have made up their minds about this, but political expediency demands that the public must be consulted.

Plans were posted and the public were invited to inspect the plans, and also to inspect the planning officers that prepared the plans.

I am quite certain that the planning officers had a torrid evening convincing the public at this meeting, that what they proposed was a good idea. More people turned up for this meeting than turned up for the recent local elections that took place in the same hall, because after all, parking the car is more important than democracy.

Every member of the public that turned up was antipathetic to the scheme, but it seemed to me that no two people had the same agenda.

People complained about the charge of £15 per annum; some complained that they already pay for parking control and others cited the example of other boroughs where parking permits were announced at a modest £15, but subsequently escalated to an annual charge of over £200; this would have course have happened, once the revenue-raising potential of parking permits was established by the borough.

At the meeting, people complained about, for example, the town planners, who allowed development of flat conversions without demanding parking provision accommodate the additional drivers.

Shopkeepers complained about their customers having nowhere to park.

The unpopular commuters seemed to be unrepresented at the meeting, but maybe they have rights in this also. Commuters do need to travel to London to make a living and they prefer to park their cars in the road where we live because they can do so for free. This should not surprise town planners at the local authority because the car park designed to meet the needs of commuters, is not free, far from it.

Therefore, a problem has been created by basic economics and town planners.

People complain about not being able to park in their own road in front of their own homes and get extremely agitated and even post their own home-made “No Parking” signs. This annoys the Monks because parking is not allowed on our side of the road, and wherever we park, it is always in front of someone else’s house.

We live in a Victorian street not designed for the motor car and the consequential need for parking. There is enough room for everybody but some neighbours are determined to get more of their fair share of the available space to accommodate all, and these
occasional abuses soon get tongues wagging. See
In this way neighbours have learnt that this or that piece of road here will accommodate two or three cars, and if you park there the trash truck wont get around that bend on a Tuesday.

Neighbours have learnt to buy small cars that will park in those small gaps between a tree and a lamp post, or a random yellow line, which may be more annoying than helpful. And then we have all the crossovers that go nowhere. Yes, there are greedy parkers out there, but on the whole, neighbours get by, united not universally, but nevertheless united by the common enemy, .... the commuter who has been sent to our road by the town planners.

I have had my run-ins with parking officials, but only when they get it wrong and don’t care to put it right. So have these town planners got it right? Only if I am a chocolate Fudge Cake.

We park must frequently directly across the road, where there is a space to accommodate two cars. This mean that 6 cars are chasing 2 spaces, but now if theses plans are approved 6 cars will be chasing 1 space.

It is quite possible that the council are not proposing to solve the problem of the commuters that are exploiting the residential status of the road in which they choose to park all day, but that they are out to raise money to sell the residential road to the highest bidder.

It is proposed that parking permits are to be sold to non-residents for £250 per annum.

Apparently I now live in a car park.
