Mountains to City -Time Lapse Reel

This film is a series of time lapse's I filmed with the Canon 5D MKII and the new Panasonic AF-100 in 2010. Lenses used were Nikkor 16mm, 24mm, 135mm, 80-200, Zeiss ZF 35 2.0 and a Olympus 14-35 2.0. Batch adjustments in Aperture and final grading in MBL. Locations range from NYC to Afghanistan and Massachusetts.

Floating through Time

This is my first attempt using a DSLR to shoot Timelapse.
I snatched my sisters Canon 450D and borrowed a Kessler Cineslider from a friend.
I never had any experiences with DSLR´s before, but i always was fascinated viewing time lapses online.
So i decided to do it myself!
I learned allot during 2 months of shooting (the weather was terrible most of the time), but i still have to learn more.
The flicker-problem was a big one, so i discovered great software to get rid of it.

Most of the shoots were taken with the kit lens (EF-S 18-55mm f3.5), except the illuminated city at the end of the clip.
This was taken with the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8., and i love it.

Unfortunately, my district is very boring (Hamburg/Germany). No mountains, light pollution preventing me to shoot many stars and it was very cold.
Next time i will start to teach myself a new technique during Summer!
Standing 3-4 hours at a low temperature (-10°C/14F) freezes my tails off!

Tokyo Time Lapse - December 2010

I shot these sequences as an exercise to acquaint myself with time lapse photography - and I made a rather quick assembly with a music track - also experimenting a bit with freeze frames and some simple moves in After Effects.

The shots were photographed over the course of several nights in Shibuya Crossing, one of the busiest intersections in Tokyo.

As a short film it does not really stand on its own merits, but I learned a few things about night exposures and TL shutter speeds (in this brightly lit area the best seemed to be about 1 second exposures at ASA 100).

I also learned the basics of using After Effects to assemble the stills into a motion sequence, and how to create pans and zooms. The original photos were just over 4000 pixels wide, so I was able to move in quite a bit and still keep the HD format of 1920 x 1080.

I photographed these scenes while in Tokyo directing a documentary for the History Channel. And some of these shots will be used in that project.

Camera: Lumix GF1, Lumix lenses, post processing on After Effects and edited on Final Cut Express on my Mac Book Pro.

The Lumix is a very nice camera, and the lenses are excellent. But for larger files and more resolution I just bought a Canon 5D - and I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do with that..thanks for watching and reading!

This is a proposal for a video clip to the most magical uses of two musical compositions that I have ever heard (Dinah Washington's 'This bitter earth' and Max Richter's 'On the nature of daylight', plays during credits of the film Shutter Island.) I believe both works are truly enhanced by this mix. While I was working on another time lapse piece about the psychological implications of climate change I thought some of the footage might visually suit and further substantiate the beauty of this song.

Scenes are shot in London, Llangollen (Wales) and Zurich (Switzerland) with a Canon Powershot G11.

Melbourne in Time

A recent trip to Melbourne to go to the Avalon International Airshow produced this small sideline project primarily shot from my hotel balcony a la P. Bloom style.

It was shot predominately on the Canon 5D mk2 but as I was given a Canon XF305 to test there are a few clips from it also.

The transitions from night to day were quite smooth with only a small amount of flicker which was pleasing.

Only took two lenses for the 5D being the 17mm f4.0 tiltshift and 50mm f1.2.

My London - Time Lapse

I’ve always been keen to explore new ways of photography, this time I would merge the world of photography with the art of video, to create a time lapse of the city. Producing video is really an unknown territory for me, and has been a complete learning curve. Of course, if I ever make another time lapse movie, then I should have a better understanding of all the proceeders.

The music was composed, performed and produced by Jonathan Overend for drumhellermusic, copyright control 2011. This is an edit of a track from his soundtrack album, The Man Who Knew Too Much. A few technical facts.
Film shot on a Olympus EP-1 Mirco 4/3rds camera.
Over 10000 photographs used. Edited in Adobe Lightroom and then joined together using Quicktime 7 Pro.
Film edited in Final Cut Express and graded with Magic Bullet.
