"Inkaland" is a feature-length documentary looking at the impact of tourism on the culture and economy of the communities of Peru's Sacred Valley. It focuses on local efforts to harness the tourism industry for the good of their people and their environment.

This is a short trailer for the film which was shot in the summer of 2007 and is currently in post-production.

(Description from Dance This 2007 Program)

“Zapateo,” derived from the word shoe, is a stepping dance style in which the dancer provides rhythmic enhancement to a melodious tune. Traditionally accompanied by one guitar, two or more males would compete against each other to demonstrate skill and musicality by improvising intricate rhythmic patterns with feet against the floor and body slapping. Unlike U.S. tap, it is danced with a plain hard-soled shoe.

9 hours from Lima, mainly off road, up the Canete valley, and you reach this: one of the most preciouse sights in Peru. The scale of the falls is really quite breathtaking; every turn in the road takes your breath away with another view of yet more waterfalls and deep green/blue lakes.

The province of Yauyos is one of the most beautiful valleys I have seen in Peru. After driving squeezed between the cliff of the canyon and the river for 3 hours, the road winds up to a calm lake that feeds the canyon with this wild waterfall which bursts through the rocks right next to the road.

This work was first created in 2005 and exhibited at Seventh Gallery seventhgallery.org/ in July 2007. The audio was created by Bruce Mowson brucemowson.com using Max/MSP to randomly select and process samples from the soundtrack to Raiders of the Lost Ark. The choice of film score to sample was not taken lightly - Indiana Jones is the "good guy" who fights the "bad guys" for the sake of "the artefact" But he is just another foreigner whose "good fight" is essentially the same as his opponents.

Machu Picchu is one of the most photographed places on the planet. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit it annually documenting it by whatever means available to them. Millions of images of the site ﬂoat around the Internet, most of them tinged blue from the excess of UV light hitting their camera’s sensor and almost all with the disclaimer that “this photo really doesn’t do it justice.” For me, the experience of travelling to this much publicised part of the world was quite strange, having lived in neighbouring Bolivia, part of me felt that this should be an experience that I should feel that I can own, that in someway my younger years living with a family abroad with Quechua and Aymara friends awarded me the right to be more than just a tourist. On the other hand, I was a tourist. And I was at one of the Disneylands of Latin America. Arriving in the early morning, the late wet
season’s rains meant that for quite some time, the iconic Machu Picchu was invisible. And that is when I felt - as I had done in many other parts of the world when I paid attention to my environment - overwhelmed, amazed and in agreement that no photo could do justice to this experience.

Machu Picchu is a meditation on the physical natural environment that holds such a legendary and exploited historical site. It explores the experience of place through
spatialising time by laying out the details in a fractured composite that alludes to the single all encompassing image so popular amongst the traveling photographers - and hence why I chose to shoot from where I did. The rolling mist that blanketed the site was a natural curtain, lifting to reveal vignettes of people and ancient ruin before closing in again leaving only a persistent memory.

Memory of experience is at the core of Machu Picchu. After all, recording such an experience so that it might be relived later is often why we photograph such places in the ﬁrst place. For me, this piece is a composition of many experiences from over an hour and a half, but it is not a strict account of that experience. Rather, the piece invites the viewer to be conscious of the constructed view that they see. The folding of time and constant reconﬁguring of the frames undermines our memory of it, but hopefully instills a sense of what is there. Memory becomes an adhoc whole, composed of a myriad of ﬂeeting moments and feelings, yet always tempered by our present experience.
