Martin Place:- The Arcas (of Romansh arch = arch) is a big place in the south of Chur's old town. The houses adjacent to the Plessur line is connected directly to the medieval city wall from the 13th Century cultivated. Fasnacht at Chur

Basel is famous around Switzerland and Europe for its ancient masked carnival, or Fasnacht, a three-day affair starting on the Monday after Mardi Gras. The earliest documented record of carnival is from 1376, although celebrations undoubtedly date back to well before that (earlier city records were destroyed in a fire in 1356): it’s said that Fasnacht, originally spelled Fastnacht, is related to an old word faseln, meaning fruitfulness. In the fourteenth century, carnival took the form of knightly tournaments held on Münsterplatz, events which may have had an origin in pagan ancestor worship since noble families had been buried in and around the Cathedral for generations. Through the Middle Ages, theologians railed against both excessive drinking at carnival time and the use of devilish masks and disguises – it’s no coincidence that the iconoclasm which marked the beginning of Basel’s Reformation broke out on Mardi Gras,
1529. For some unexplained reason, over time celebrations were shifted one week later to after the beginning of Lent (Basel still celebrated carnival despite its embrace of Protestantism after the Reformation), and were transformed into a series of processions organized by the city’s guilds and associations. Drum-and-pipe bands accompanied the display of weaponry, dancing and fancy-dress revelry. Greater organization throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth century resulted in the carnival of today, where some 12,000 people take part under the auspices of several hundred Cliques, groups or musical bands, all of which must apply in advance to the Fasnachts-Comité for permission to march. It’s a feature of Basel’s carnival that, unless you’re part of a performing Clique, you have to stay as an observer – unlike, for instance, in Luzern, where carnival is an all-in street-party welcoming participation from anyone and everyone.

On the Sunday night after Mardi Gras, Basel’s carnival-goers kick off their celebrations at the nearby town of Liestal’s spectacular bonfire parade, which lasts until after midnight (see here). Everyone decamps back to Basel in preparation for the Morgestraich, a magical and unmissable parade of huge illuminated lanterns through the city centre which begins in invariably freezing darkness at 4am on the Monday morning; the ornately decorated lanterns are left on display in Münsterplatz from Monday evening through to Wednesday morning. From lunch time, the various masked Cliques parade through the city in a Cortège, with much music, dancing and jollity, followed in the evening by masked bands and small groups with fifes and drums roving through the Old Town. Baslers take their costumes seriously (half-masks and face paint are taboo), and many people spend weeks in advance making huge, cartoonish papier-mâché heads and sewing lavish jester-like costumes. It’s a tradition for locals to recite Schnitzelbängg, satirical verses directed at local bigwigs, in the city’s taverns and restaurants during the Monday and Wednesday evenings. Tuesday night sees Guggemusige concerts of comical oompah, played on old and dented brass instruments by bands gathered in Barfüsser-, Clara- and Marktplatz, and musical groups and masked Cliques continue to prowl through the Old Town during Wednesday afternoon until nightfall – whereupon everybody turns in for some restorative sleep. Throughout the celebrations, you’ll come across places selling Fasnachtsküchli, a light, thin round cake covered in icing sugar, and Fastenwähe, a kind of caraway-seed pretzel.

Carnival

Basel’s most famous festival, attracting attention from all over Switzerland and Europe, is carnival, held over three days from the Monday following Mardi Gras. Just as venerable, though, is January’s Vogel Gryff festival, centred specifically on Kleinbasel. In March, the Swiss Trade Fair, or MUBA, is held in Basel’s Messe conference centre – a giant event serving as a showcase for Swiss accomplishments in trade and industry which is of little general interest in itself but which books the city out. The annual World Watch, Clock and Jewellery Fair does the same thing in April, while in June Basel’s ART International Contemporary Art Fair (www.art.ch) is the largest event of its kind in the world, generally very interesting to attend and inspiring many associated arty happenings throughout the city. The night before the Swiss National Day – July 31 – sees a festival of folk music on the Rhine, with stalls, traditional foods and a huge fireworks display. TEFAF, or the International Art and Antiques Show, is a movable Messe feast in the early autumn. The last Saturday in October marks the start of Basel’s two-week Autumn Fair, Europe’s longest-running traditional fair, held without a break since 1471 and now metamorphosed into sub-carnival festivities centred on funfairs and street jollity.

Vogel Gryff

Dating back to the thirteenth century or so, Kleinbasel’s Vogel Gryff festival incorporates pagan rituals and customs in the guise of fêting the head of one of the three guild associations of Kleinbasel. It takes place on January 13, 20 or 27, depending on which association holds the baton that year. At 11am, a raft carries the Wild Maa (a hairy figure symbolizing fertility) down the Rhine to the Mittlere Brücke; he holds an uprooted pine sapling and dances – with his back always turned to Grossbasel – to an ancient drum march. The Leu (lion) and Vogel Gryff (griffon) meet him on the bank to the accompaniment of booming cannon, and at noon the three of them stand at the midpoint of the Mittlere Brücke and dance a traditional, highly ritualized dance to the sound of a drum, every precise step documented from the origins of the festival in the Middle Ages. This is as close as the party gets to Grossbasel, since everyone then proceeds back to Kleinbasel for the Gryffemähli, a luncheon for the members of the three guilds (where the symbolic dance is repeated), and a procession through the streets accompanied by four jingling jesters who collect money for Kleinbasel’s poor. During the evening, the party enters full swing, with much drinking and merrymaking, while the three figures continue to dance their odd and mysterious dance in the older Kleinbasel restaurants.

Advent is the period beginning on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Eve, historically seen as the preparation of the arrival of Christ.

During the 19th century in particular, this waiting period before Christmas was viewed as a way of teaching children patience before a reward - hence the development of the Advent Calendar, a calendar with 24 little flaps opening onto windows with images within a Christmas scene.
Advent Calendars are very much a part of the Swiss Christmas tradition, as is the Advent wreath which has four candles, one for each of the Sundays in Advent (on the first Sunday, one candle is burnt, on the second, two are lit, and so on.
Christmas markets are held all over Switzerland during the Advent season.
Klausjagen

This tradition ("Chasing St Nicholas") takes place on December 5 in Catholic areas of Switzerland, most notably in Küssnacht am Rigi in Canton Schwyz.
This is in fact not a chase, but a torchlit procession. It is led by up to 200 men wearing long white shirts and carrying on their heads huge "Infuln", or mitres, made of thick cardboard and colourful transparent paper and lit by candles from the inside. These figures dance through streets, turning and bowing.
St Nicholas himself appears after them, escorted by several Schmutzlis (his dark-robed assistants). They in turn are followed by several hundred men (the Klausjäger, or pursuers) in white farmers' shirts and red neck ties. Some beat large cow bells rhythmically against their legs, others blow brass instruments or cowhorns. Yet more noise is created by the loud cracking of whips.
Samichlaus
St Nicholas (Nicholas of Myra, Patron Saint of children) is popularly called Samichlaus in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. He appears not on Christmas Eve or Day, but on December 6, when children awake to find the shoe or boot they put out the night before filled with mandarin oranges, nuts and cookies.
St Nicholas is accompanied by a character called Schmutzli on his visits to children, in particular in the central cantons. In contrast to the Patron Saint, Schmutzli usually is a rather dark and gloomy figure who carries a cane ("Rute") as well as the jute sack filled with presents.
Female characters take on a similar role in other parts of the country, such as Befana in the Italian-speaking southern canton of Ticino and Chauche-vieille in French-speaking Western Switzerland. In Ticino, children hang up stockings on night of January 5-6 (the word Befana is derived from Epiphany): "good" children receive sweets, while tradition has it that "bad" children find a lump of coal, or sugar lumps resembling coal, in their stockings.
Christmas
The evening of December 24, is very much a family celebration in Switzerland. This is the evening on which small children get to see the decorated and lit tree in all its splendour for the first time, complete with wrapped gifts underneath.
In Switzerland, it is not uncommon to have candles rather than electric lights on the tree. Unfortunately, there is the occasional accident involving burning trees. Electric lights decorating Swiss Christmas trees usually emit a warm yellowish light, rather than the blinking coloured lights often seen in the United States and Britain.
Traditionally, children in Catholic areas were told that the presents were brought by the Christkind (German), Le petit Jésus (French), or Gesu Bambino. But probably these days children are just as familiar with the character almost universally recognized as Santa Claus.

Activists held events around the world Saturday to mark the number they say the world needs to reach to prevent disastrous climate change: 350.

The number represents 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere that some scientists say is the safe upper limit. The atmosphere currently reaches about 390 parts per million, according to research by NASA climate scientist James Hanse cited by 350.org.

Hundreds of events highlighted the number in different ways.

In what 350.org founder Bill McKibben called a global game of Scrabble, groups in Australia, Ecuador, India, the United Kingdom, the U.S. and Denmark each spelled out one of the numbers in 350. Hundreds gathered in New York City's Times Square and watched slideshows of the other events on giant screens.

McKibben, an environmentalist and author of "The End of Nature," said the day was unique because it emphasized the science behind a politically complicated topic.

"It was ordinary people rallying around a scientific data point," McKibben said. "Nothing like that has ever happened before."

In Venezuela, volunteers formed a human chain marking the number zero on the beach at Catia La Mar north of Caracas to mark the spot where they said the ocean would reach if global warming is not stopped.

McKibben said volunteers also sent in photos of separate groups forming the numbers 350 around the Dead Sea, in Jordan, Israel and Palestinian territory.

Many of the events referred to the Copenhagen conference scheduled in December that will seek to reach a new global climate change treaty to replace the 1997 Kyoto Protocol on carbon dioxide emissions. It has been billed as a last chance to avoid the impact of catastrophic global that could be felt for generations.

McKibben said there are lessons to be learned from the Kyoto Protocol, which the U.S. did not join.

"We saw what happened," he said. "Everybody walked away once it was done, and there was no real progress. We need to pick up the pace."

Who behind the Churer Festival?
The Churer Festival takes place over the last weekend of summer Churer city school as folk festival. The heart of the Bündner transformed capital for three days in a fixed area with great diversity.
Who are the protagonists?

at the gateway to Switzerland’s largest holiday region, in Maienfeld, waits Heidi - arguably the most famous girl in Switzerland! She enjoyed her adventures with Peter the goatherd and the old Alp Öhi in the Bündner Herrschaft region.
Although the Bündner Herrschaft is the northernmost point of Graubünden, it is the most southerly in terms of its climate. Mist is rare, as the warm Föhn wind blows over vineyards and orchards until late autumn and pushes the Öchsle scale up high, allowing the fruit to ripen for excellent wines. The Chur Rhine
Valley is also where Chur is situated – the capital of Graubünden and centre of the region. By using the Rhaetian Railway or the Graubünden Post-Bus you can visit many tourist regions, both smaller and larger, in no time at all.

The golden Castle
The ?golden castle? is a flowering plant. That was what my mother called the globe flower and not without reason. Most blossoms open themselves to the sun and the light and lure insects with their scent, colour and brightness, so that they can be pollinated. The globe flower, however, makes a thick ball with its petals. No butterfly, no honey-bee, no bumble-bee can get to its fructifying organs. Only a tiny sort of fly succeeds - attracted by what is for it a heady scent - in getting inside the ball of petals. There golden light awaits it, and with the numerous stamens, a rich supply of food. In dark weather, or when it is cold, or at night-time, the flower gives it a pleasant shelter. Thus because of this the tiny fly stays in its castle and involuntarily fructifies the flower.Only when the globe flower starts to wilt does the little insect leave its host and seek new accommodation. The unique form of this flower and its golden colouring have resulted in a whole series of picturesque names for it. In the Bernese Alps it is called Ankeballe, in German-speaking Grisons Popperolle (what is meant here are the wavy locks of a blond-haired child). Globe flowers thrive at an altitude of 700 to 2400 meters. They bloom in June and July. The straight, thin stems grow to a height of between 10 and 70 centimeters. The blossom measures 20 to 40 millimeters in diameter.
The almost round petals protect the numerous stamens on the inside. Globe flowers like damp meadows, grassy ridges, high moorland and the banks of streams. They are to be found not only in the Alps but also in the Appenines, the Pyrenees and even as far afield as Norway. In the area through which our hike passes, they cover wide surfaces. This does not mean that masses of them should be plucked, though! This plant has had to be given protected status in several Swiss cantons.

If it’s true that you can judge a country’s image of itself by its National Day, then Switzerland definitely offers a relaxing sight. No military parades and no grandiose speeches on Lebensraum (living space).
On August the first, the whole country gathers in public places around bonfires and listens to speeches about the independence of the country from the Austrian rulers, which started with the Grütli Pact of 1291.

The first of August is celebrated solely in the municipalities. Only one radio and television broadcast of a speech by the President of the Confederation currently in office reminds the Swiss that their cities are united in cantons, which in turn makes the Helvetic Confederation. Thought-provoking words from an eminent cultural or political speaker, songs and music, gymnastic shows and group performances of the Swiss national anthem are the traditional elements of the holiday.
Many municipalities set off fireworks, and these spectacular light shows are often ignited from the mountains and hills. They serve as a reminder of the expulsion of the foreign bailiffs in the 14th century, for the great news was announced in this very way. The children march through the streets at dusk with candle-lit Chinese lanterns. Flags with the arms of the Confederation, the canton and the municipality fly proudly above public and private buildings alike. Even the bakers get involved, decorating their rolls of bread with little Swiss flags. The origin of the Swiss Confederation is conventionally regarded as being the oath of mutual support sworn between the three "original cantons" - Schwyz, Uri and Unterwalden (now divided into Nidwalden and Obwalden) - in 1291.
They were prompted to do this by the death of the German Emperor, Rudolf of Habsburg, because they feared that his successor might try to take away the rightsand freedoms they had been granted and impose an outside governor.
Similar alliances had been sworn before by the various communities in central Switzerland, but this is the first one whose text has been preserved.
The swearing ceremony took place on the Rütli meadow by Lake Lucerne, which has since become a symbol of Swiss freedom.

The name of William Tell is associated with the events surrounding the Rütli oath. He is supposed to have defied and killed the wicked bailiff, Gessler, whom the Habsburg overlords had installed to manage their affairs and take away the freedoms of the local people. Considerable doubt has been cast on the authenticity of the tale, but it does reflect the concerns of Tell's contemporaries.
