Helen Kate Shapiro is a British pop and jazz singer and actress. While still a teenager in the early 1960s, she was one of Britain's most successful female singers. With a voice described by AllMusic as possessing "the maturity and sensibilities of someone far beyond their teen years", Helen Shapiro recorded two 1961 UK chart toppers, "You Don't Know" and "Walkin' Back to Happiness", when she was just fourteen years old. It was a real pleasure to talk with Helen about her Gospel Outreach. Helen gave us a great insight to her early days and a priviliged insight to her beliefs. A sad Farewell to the Enigmatic Don Woods who was laid to rest on his beloved Wirral Peninsular last Friday 11th November 2022. Don had always been very fit and healthy until fate struck his lungs a fateful blow about 8 weeks ago. I phoned Don early one Monday morning as was our arrangement. We loved to sit and chew the fat over the airwaves then remember an aspect of Don's songwriting. Don was struggling for breath for a few weeks before he suddenly went into hospital and here I am writing our blog after his death and subsequent funeral. As his illness progressed it became obvious that Don was feeling the loss of his wife Cynthia very deeply. It had only been a few weeks before all this happened that I had produced a podcast with Don recounting various aspects of his life and remembering how we had first met in the early days of BBC Radio at Radio Merseyside. I am still finding this a little overwhelming and the podcast will allow Don to tell you about his life and our friendship. He was talented, successful, versatile, enigmatic and fun to be around. Thanks for the memories Don and thanks for your valued friendship. You will be missed by many people who admired your love of music, your love of Wirral and your love of Wales. Our thoughts and prayers are with Don, Don's son, Steve, and all his family and friends. RIP Vince and Anne in Spain xx

Emile Ford was first and foremost a sound scientist and secondly he was a Number One hit-maker. He lived his life trying to create the best sound in the world and he had been involved with some of the biggest names in the business. I first met Emile in Cornwall around 1990 and he became a personal friend.

Vince met up with Emile Ford on Wednesday 8th July 2009 when Emile explained that he had been creating his wonderful sound for such great stars as Michael Jackson, Abba, Bruce Sprinsteen, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin and the artistes who competed in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest. His destiny has been to create his wonderful sound. The podcast is an insight into his wonderful life.

A great memory for me was meeting the wonderful Brenda Lee over the airwaves from my radio show in Spain.

Brenda Lee, is an American singer. Performing rockabilly, pop and country music, she had 47 US chart hits during the 1960s and is ranked fourth in that decade, surpassed only by Elvis Presley, the Beatles and Ray Charles. She is known for her 1960 hit "I'm Sorry", and 1958's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree", which has become a Christmas standard.

At 4 ft 9 inches tall (approximately 145 cm), she received the nickname "Little Miss Dynamite" in 1957, after recording the song "Dynamite" when she was 12, and was one of the earliest pop stars to have a major contemporary international following.

Sir Henry Cooper was a British southpaw heavyweight boxing champion, best remembered for a 1963 fight with a young Muhamed Ali who was then known as Cassius Clay. Sir Henry gives us his version of a very dodgy tampering episode when he was on the verge of winning but which he lost lost when the fight was called off due to a cut. Cooper was the undefeated British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion for twelve years, and held the European heavyweight title for three years. In 1966 he fought Ali, by then the World Champion a second time and was again stopped due to a cut. Cooper twice was voted BBC Sports Personality of the year and after retiring in 1971 following a controversial loss remained a popular public figure. He is the only boxer to have been awarded a knighthood.

Episode 122: The Wonderful Mike D'Abo

In August 1966 Mike joined Manfred Mann, an established chart-topping group, as replacement for Paul Jones, who was leaving to start a solo career. Comparisons between d'Abo and Jones became a media preoccupation at the time of the switch, but
d'Abo wasted little time dwelling upon it. "I enjoy being with the group," he told Pete Goodman. "We really do have an
enormously wide range of musical tastes among us."

D'Abo's first big hit with Manfred Mann was "Semi-Detached Suburban Mr James". It was nearly recorded with "Mr Jones" in the title before it occurred to the group that it might be
interpreted as being an implied reference to Paul Jones. D'Abo first recorded the As Is album (with the attaching single "Just
Like a Woman").

He composed and produced Chris Farlowe's "Handbags and Gladrags", a hit single which was also notably recorded by Rod Stewart and Stereophonics and subsequently became the theme music to the BBC television show The Office.

Episode 122: 60s Star Mike Sarne

Mike Sarne was born Michael Scheuer at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London. Famous in the 1960s as a singer, he is best known for his 1962 UK novelty chart topper, "Come Outside" (produced by Joe Meek), which featured vocal interjections by Wendy Richard. In the mid 1960s Mike introduced the ITV children's quiz series, Junior Criss Cross Quiz.

Films he has directed include: Joanna (1968) and most notably Myra Breckinridge (1970), an adaptation of Gore Vidal's book of the same name, starring Raquel Welch, Rex Reed, Mae West and Farrah Fawcett in her first big screen role. A more recent film is The Punk and the Princess (1994) an adaptation of Gideon Sams' young adult novel The Punk, about the romance between a teenage punk rocker and an upper class Sloane Ranger girl. He also directed a documentary about the Glastonbury Music Festival in 1995.

Trinidad López III was an American singer, guitarist, and actor. His first album included a cover version of Pete Seeger's "If I Had a Hammer", which earned a Golden Disc for him. The song reached number one in 36 countries, and was a radio favourite for many years. I almost met Trini in person when I had been visiting family and friends in Palm Springs and Trini had been in town just a few nights before we'd arrived. I learned that Trini Lopez formed his first band inTexas at the age of 15. Around 1955/56 Lopez and his band worked at The Vegas Club, a nightclub owned by Jack Ruby, the man who assassinated Lee Harvey oswald. I was very thankful that Trin took the time to take my call and for him, it was in the wee small hours of the morning. Trini appeared in the 1967 film the Dirty Dozen

Career Overview The 1970s: Carrack's recording career began with the progressive rock band Warm Dust between 1970 and 1972. Carrack was the keyboard
player for Warm Dust Carrack and Warm Dust bassist Tex Comer helped to found the pub rock band Ace. Carrack wrote and sang "How Long", Ace's debut single and
a hit on both sides of the Atlantic in 1975. In 1977 Ace disbanded and Carrack began working as a backing
musician for Frankie Miller. This was followed by a turn as a member of Roxy Music, playing keyboards on their 1979 reunion album Manifesto. The 1980s: after
leaving Roxy Music full time, Carrack issued his first solo album, 1980s Nightbird.
It was not a commercial success. 1n 1981, Glenn Tilbrook recruited Carrack to join Squeeze as a replacement for long-time keyboardist Jools Holland...........

Paul's brother sang and performed in a famous 60s satirical group called Scaffold. They had several hits and were very popular. The other members of thje group were Roger McGough and John Gorman.

The three members were brought together through a shared love of music, poetry and comedy and proceeded to write and compose original material often parodying elements of real life whilst covering some of their favourite Liverpool songs.

Fred has played the folk circuit for many years, both prior to, and in the wake of, his single chart success. He has also presented many programmes on West Country TV.

Wedlocks's albums include The Folker (1971) (notable for the title track parody of "The Boxer" by Simon and Garfunkel), Frolicks (1973), Out of Wedlock (1978), The Oldest Swinger in Town (1981) and Fred Wedlock Live (1982).

Wedlock's daughter, Hannah Wedlock, is now a member of the Pigsty Hill Light Orchestra, another Bristol-based outfit, whom Fred made his support band at an early stage of their career.

Wedlock's grandfather Billy Wedlock captained Bristol City F.C. and was a regular for England in the early 20th century. The Wedlock stand at Ashton Gate is named in his honour.

He lived in Timsbury, Somerset.

Alvin made his stage debut in pantomime at the age of four. In the early 1960s he became known as Shane Fenton, and with his backing group, The Fentones, had a handful of hits in the UK Singles Chart.. He also appeared in #BillyFury's movie, Play It Cool.

During the early 1970s, he became Alvin Stardust, as he tried to cash in on the glam rock bandwagon. His debut hit was "My Coo-Ca-Choo" in 1973. Stardust had other chart successes ...he amassed seven Top Ten entries, in a chart span for Jewry lasting almost 25 years.

#AlvinStardust was part of the Green Cross Code road safety campaign.
In 1985, Stardust participated in A Song for Europe, the UK qualifying heat of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Moving into musical theatre, Stardust starred in the UK tour of #Godspell; and played Uriah Heep in David Copperfield - The Musical; and Sir Billy Butlin in The Butlin Story at the #LondonPalladium.

In 2005 Stardust starred as the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, also at the London Palladium.

It was an absolute pleasure to meet Mike over the airwaves on 22nd April 2013 when he told
me about his fascinating and wonderful career.

Mike Sarne was born Michael Scheuer at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London. Active in
the 1960s as singer, he is best known for his 1962 UK novelty chart topper, "Come Outside"
(produced by Joe Meek), which featured vocal interjections by Wendy Richard. In the mid

1960s Mike introduced the ITV children's quiz series, Junior Criss Cross Quiz.

Films he has directed include: Joanna (1968) and most notably Myra Breckinridge (1970), an
adaptation of Gore Vidal's book of the same name, starring Raquel Welch, Rex Reed, Mae
West and Farrah Fawcett in her first big screen role. A more recent film is The Punk and the
Princess (1994) an adaptation of Gideon Sams' young adult novel The Punk, about the
romance between a teenage punk rocker and an upper class Sloane Ranger girl. He also
directed a documentary about the Glastonbury Music Festival in 1995.

As an actor, he has appeared mainly on television, in British series including The Avengers,
Man in a Suitcase, Jonathan Creek, and The Bill. He starred in the 1963 film A Place to Go
with Rita Tushingham, directed by Basil Dearden. Michael Sarne also appeared in an
episode of 'Minder' as Billy Beesley, a amateur safe blower.

The Wonderful Frank Ifield

Vince chatted with #FrankIfield. In his Early years Frank Ifield moved with his Australian parents to Dural, 50 km (30 miles) from Sydney, about 1946. It was a rural district and he listened to #hillbilly music while milking the cows. He learned how to #yodel in imitation of country stars like Hank Snow. At the age of thirteen he recorded "Did You See My Daddy Over There?", and by the age of 19 was the number one recording star in #Australia and #New ealand. He returned to the UK in 1959. The hits His first record in the UK was "Lucky Devil" (1960) which got to number 22 in the UK charts. "I Remember You" which topped the charts for seven weeks in 1962. Known for Ifield's falsetto and a slight yodel, it became the top-selling single of that year and was one of the first million sellers within the UK alone.
