NASA Picks Three Companies To Build Private Moon Landers

NASA is providing $79.5m to Astrobotic, $77m to Intuitive Machines and $97m to Orbit Beyond for the project.

NASA has chosen the first commercial companies that will carry the agency's equipment to the moon during its lead-up to a human landing in 2024: Astrobotic, Intuitive Machines and Orbit Beyond.

The companies will build moon landers to ferry NASA science experiments and technology demonstrations to the lunar surface. Those flights will be the first step of the agency's ambitious Artemis program to land humans on the moon in 2024. The first mission, by Orbit Beyond, will launch in September 2020. The other two will launch in the summer of 2021.

“This is truly exciting, a new way for us at NASA to do business,” Thomas Zurbuchen, the head of NASA's science mission directorate, said on Friday, May 31, during the announcement at agency's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.

“We cannot wait to do the science that we want to do with instruments that we're developing right now — science that in many cases even five years ago we didn't know how to ask questions about. This is how urgent this is,” he said.

Astrobotic, Intuitive Machines and Orbit Beyond will each carry a selection of NASA payloads that are intended either to address scientific questions about the moon or to test new technology that engineers are developing to advance space exploration.

NASA is providing $79.5 million to Astrobotic, $77 million to Intuitive Machines and $97 million to Orbit Beyond to work on their landers.

NASA has not yet decided precisely which payloads will fly on which lander; the agency intends to do so later this year. Astrobotic has said its Peregrine lander will carry up to 14 payloads for NASA as well as 14 experiments for other customers (for a total of 28 payloads in all. Intuitive Machines will fly five payloads on its Nova-C lander, with Orbit Beyond carrying four payloads on its own Z-01 lander.

But each company's lander will be carrying more than just NASA's payloads. Orbit Beyond showed off a small demo rover as well as its lander model during the event NASA held to announce its commercial partners. Astrobotic also said it plans to carry rovers on its lunar lander.

Two of the selected companies are planning to launch their missions two years from now.

Astrobotic plans to launch its lander in June 2021 and touch down in July 2021; Intuitive Machines to both launch and land in July 2021. Orbit Beyond is pushing the timeline significantly more: the company has told NASA it can land on the moon on Sept. 27, 2020.

The announcement follows the selection of nine finalist companies, which were announced in November. At the time, NASA did not offer any details about specific criteria that guided their choices

Saturn is Losing its Rings: NASA

Saturn is losing its iconic rings at the maximum rate estimated from Voyager 1 and 2 observations made decades ago, confirms new NASA research that estimates that the rings have less than 100 million years to live.

Saturn's rings are mostly chunks of water ice ranging in size from microscopic dust grains to boulders several yards (metres) across. The rings are being pulled into Saturn by gravity as a dusty rain of ice particles under the influence of Saturn's magnetic field.

"We estimate that this 'ring rain' drains an amount of water products that could fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool from Saturn's rings in half an hour," said lead author of the study James O'Donoghue of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

"From this alone, the entire ring system will be gone in 300 million years, but add to this the Cassini-spacecraft measured ring-material detected falling into Saturn's equator, and the rings have less than 100 million years to live. This is relatively short, compared to Saturn's age of over four billion years," O'Donoghue said.

Scientists have long wondered if Saturn was formed with the rings or if the planet acquired them later in life. The new research favours the latter scenario, indicating that they are unlikely to be older than 100 million years.

"We are lucky to be around to see Saturn's ring system, which appears to be in the middle of its lifetime. However, if rings are temporary, perhaps we just missed out on seeing giant ring systems of Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune, which have only thin ringlets today," O'Donoghue added.

Various theories have been proposed for the rings' origin. If the planet got them later in life, the rings could have formed when small, icy moons in orbit around Saturn collided, perhaps because their orbits were perturbed by a gravitational tug from a passing asteroid or comet.

The first hints that ring rain existed came from Voyager observations of seemingly unrelated phenomena: peculiar variations in Saturn's electrically charged upper atmosphere (ionosphere), density variations in Saturn's rings, and a trio of narrow dark bands encircling the planet at northern mid-latitudes.

These dark bands appeared in images of Saturn's hazy upper atmosphere (stratosphere) made by NASA's Voyager 2 mission in 1981.

The new study revealed glowing bands in Saturn's northern and southern hemispheres where the magnetic field lines that intersect the ring plane enter the planet.

Scientists analysed the light to determine the amount of rain from the ring and its effects on Saturn's ionosphere. They found that the amount of rain matches remarkably well with the astonishingly high values derived more than three decades earlier.

What is the need to launch a dedicated satellite for IAF?

This comes at a time when India is in the process of acquiring American armed Predator-B or Sea Guardian drones, which are high-altitude and long endurance satellite-controlled UAVs that can fire at enemy targets from long distances.

Costing around Rs 500-800 crore, the communication satellite is configured on the standard 1-2K Bus with bi-propellant chemical propulsion system for orbit rasing and in-orbit maintenance. Its four solar panels are capable of generating around 3.3 kilowatts of electrical power.

How many dedicated communication satellites Isro has launched for the military?

Before the scheduled launch of Gsat-7A, Isro had launched Gsat-7, also called ‘Rukmini’, on September 29, 2013 exclusively for the Navy. ‘Rukmini’ has helped the Navy monitor the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) as the satellite has a nearly 2,000 nautical mile ‘footprint’ and provides real-time inputs to Indian warships, submarines and maritime aircraft. The IAF is also likely to get another satellite Gsat-7C, within a few years that will boost its network-centric operations.

According to Sarah Lewin at Space.com, Farout—whose official name is 2018 VG18—was first spotted in November by researchers using the Subaru 8-meter telescope in Hawaii. Its existence was then confirmed using the Magellan telescope at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. Those observations show that the object is about 300 miles across and spherical, making it a dwarf planet. Its pinkish color also suggests that it is covered in ice. The celestial body was found about 120 astronomical units (AU) away, or 120 times the distance of the Earth to the sun. For comparison, Pluto orbits at 34 AUs and Eris, the former farthest observed object in the solar system, is 96 AUs away.

“All that we currently know about 2018 VG18 is its extreme distance from the sun, its approximate diameter, and its color,” says David Tholen, a researcher at the University of Hawaii, in a press release. “Because 2018 VG18 is so distant, it orbits very slowly, likely taking more than 1,000 years to take one trip around the Sun.”

Farout was discovered while researchers searched for the elusive Planet X or Planet 9, a large planet believed to be orbiting the sun at the far edges of the solar system that could explain some of the strange orbits of minor planets and space rocks beyond Pluto. Farout, however, doesn’t fit the bill.

“Planet X needs to be several times larger than Earth in order to gravitationally push the other smaller objects around and shepherd them into similar types of orbits,” co-discoverer Scott S. Sheppard from the Carnegie Institution for Science tells George Dvorsky at Gizmodo. “Planet X is also likely even further away, at a few hundred AU.”

Scientists aren't sure of Farout's exact orbital path yet. It could be that gravity from a nearby large planet like Neptune tugs on it and it will orbit toward the giant planet region of our solar system, says Sheppard. However, if its orbit leads further outward and deeper into space, it could mean Planet X has a hold on it.

While Farout is truly far out, Lewin at Space.com emphasizes that it’s the farthest object we’ve observed. We know that other objects swing even deeper into space, though we haven’t seen them in action. The orbit of the dwarf planet Sedna, for instance, should take it 900 AUs away from the sun. And it’s hypothesized that our solar system is surrounded by a shell of rocky and icy objects between 1000 and 100,000 AUs away called the Oort Cloud. But those objects are so far away, we haven’t been able to catch a glimpse yet, though there are several comets that astronomers believe may have journeyed from that distant edge of our solar system closer to our own cosmic neighborhood.

Chandrayaan-I data confirms presence of ice on Moon

Scientists have found frozen water deposits in the darkest and coldest parts of the Moon's polar regions using data from the Chandrayaan-I spacecraft, that was launched by India 10 years ago, NASA said today.

With enough ice sitting at the surface -- within the top few millimetres -- water would possibly be accessible as a resource for future expeditions to explore and even stay on the Moon, and potentially easier to access than the water detected beneath the Moon's surface.

The ice deposits are patchily distributed and could possibly be ancient, according to the study published in the journal PNAS.

At the southern pole, most of the ice is concentrated at lunar craters, while the northern pole's ice is more widely, but sparsely spread.

Scientists used data from NASA's Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) instrument to identify three specific signatures that definitively prove there is water ice at the surface of the Moon.

M3, aboard the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, launched in 2008 by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), was uniquely equipped to confirm the presence of solid ice on the Moon.

It collected data that not only picked up the reflective properties we would expect from ice, but was able to directly measure the distinctive way its molecules absorb infrared light, so it can differentiate between liquid water or vapor and solid ice.

Most of the newfound water ice lies in the shadows of craters near the poles, where the warmest temperatures never reach above minus 156 degrees Celsius.

Due to the very small tilt of the Moon's rotation axis, sunlight never reaches these regions.

Previous observations indirectly found possible signs of surface ice at the lunar south pole, but these could have been explained by other phenomena, such as unusually reflective lunar soil.

Learning more about this ice, how it got there, and how it interacts with the larger lunar environment will be a key mission focus for NASA and commercial partners, as humans endeavour to return to and explore the Moon

Astronomers have identified some of the earliest galaxies in the Universe.

The team from the Institute for Computational Cosmology at Durham University and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, has found evidence that the faintest satellite galaxies orbiting our own Milky Way galaxy are amongst the very first galaxies that formed in our Universe.

Scientists working on this research have described the finding as "hugely exciting" explaining that that finding some of the Universe's earliest galaxies orbiting the Milky Way is "equivalent to finding the remains of the first humans that inhabited the Earth."

The research group's findings suggest that galaxies including Segue-1, Bootes I, Tucana II and Ursa Major I are in fact some of the first galaxies ever formed, thought to be over 13 billion years old.

When the Universe was about 380,000 years old, the very first atoms formed. These were hydrogen atoms, the simplest element in the periodic table. These atoms collected into clouds and began to cool gradually and settle into the small clumps or "halos" of dark matter that emerged from the Big Bang.

This cooling phase, known as the "Cosmic dark ages", lasted about 100 million years. Eventually, the gas that had cooled inside the halos became unstable and began to form stars—these objects are the very first galaxies ever to have formed.

With the formation of the first galaxies, the Universe burst into light, bringing the cosmic dark ages to an end.

Dr. Sownak Bose, at Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, working with Dr. Alis Deason and Professor Carlos Frenk at Durham University's ICC, identified two populations of satellite galaxies orbiting the Milky Way.

The first was a very faint population consisting of the galaxies that formed during the "cosmic dark ages". The second was a slightly brighter population consisting of galaxies that formed hundreds of millions of years later, once the hydrogen that had been ionized by the intense ultraviolet radiation emitted by the first stars was able to cool into more massive dark matter halos.

Remarkably, the team found that a model of galaxy formation that they had developed previously agreed perfectly with the data, allowing them to infer the formation times of the satellite galaxies.

Their findings are published in the Astrophysical Journal.

Professor Carlos Frenk, Director of Durham University's Institute for Computational Cosmology, said: "Finding some of the very first galaxies that formed in our Universe orbiting in the Milky Way's own backyard is the astronomical equivalent of finding the remains of the first humans that inhabited the Earth. It is hugely exciting.

"Our finding supports the current model for the evolution of our Universe, the 'Lambda-cold-dark-matter model' in which the elementary particles that make up the dark matter drive cosmic evolution."

The intense ultraviolet radiation emitted by the first galaxies destroyed the remaining hydrogen atoms by ionizing them (knocking out their electrons), making it difficult for this gas to cool and form new stars.

The process of galaxy formation ground to a halt and no new galaxies were able to form for the next billion years or so.

Eventually, the halos of dark matter became so massive that even ionized gas was able to cool. Galaxy formation resumed, culminating in the formation of spectacular bright galaxies like our own Milky Way.

Dr. Sownak Bose, who was a Ph.D. student at the ICC when this work began and is now a research fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, said: "A nice aspect of this work is that it highlights the complementarity between the predictions of a theoretical model and real data.

"A decade ago, the faintest galaxies in the vicinity of the Milky Way would have gone under the radar. With the increasing sensitivity of present and future galaxy censuses, a whole new trove of the tiniest galaxies has come into the light, allowing us to test theoretical models in new regimes."

Dr. Alis Deason, who is a Royal Society University Research Fellow at the ICC, Durham University, said: "This is a wonderful example of how observations of the tiniest dwarf galaxies residing in our own Milky Way can be used to learn about the early Universe."

When is Diwali?

As per India's official holiday calendar, Diwali in 2017 will be on October 19, coinciding with the 15th day of Kartik, the holiest month in the Hindu lunar calendar.

NASA Predicts That A 4 Kilometer Wide Asteroid Will Zip Past Earth On 1 September

Asteroids are whizzing past Earth all the time, though they don’t come too close to hitting us. NASA has now predicted another fly by the incident to occur next month, but it’s slightly different.

For one thing, the space agency is saying the rock that’ll hurtle past us is the largest near-Earth object (NEO) we’ve seen since we began tracking them 20 years ago.

Measuring 4.4 km across, asteroid Florence, as it’s called, is more than large enough to cause massive destruction, were it to hit Earth. Even the 20 m wide Chelyabinsk meteorite that made contact in 2013 wrought havoc, and any object larger than 1 km impacting Earth could cause a global extinction. And NASA has tracked over 880 such NEOs in our vicinity.

But, though asteroid Florence is about making its closest pass of Earth at a distance of 7 million km, the space agency there’s no chance of a collision anytime in the next 500 years.

“While many known asteroids have passed by closer to Earth than Florence will on September 1, all of those were estimated to be smaller,” says Paul Chodas, manager of NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS). “Florence is the largest asteroid to pass by our planet this close since the NASA program to detect and track near-Earth asteroids began.”

The rock will zip past our planet on September 1, and will be visible to small telescopes for a few nights from late August to early September.

Aliens of mystery planet Nibiru created human race, and now, the planet is about to collide with Earth in September, say conspiracy theorists. We might die in 45 days, if the theory comes true.

If conspiracy theorists are to be believed, a planet will clash with Earth in September. To further reaffirm this, they believe that the coming solar eclipse will call for the apocalypse.

On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will witness an eclipse of the sun for the first time in 99 years, where Moon will pass in front of the sun, casting darkness across swathes of the Earth's surface.

It is called the Great American Eclipse and is a once-in-a-lifetime celestial spectacle.

David Meade, who authored 'Planet X - The 2017 Arrival' asserts that the planet, Nibiru, also know as Planet X, will crash into Earth on September 23, 2017.

If one is to believe in that, then you have some 40 days to find a bunker and store essentials like food and water, maybe books to feed the soul for whatever days you are left with.

But then, one is sent into a fix because scientists deny Nibiru's existence.

However, Meade believes -- or is rather convinced -- that he is right, after having stumbled upon some passages from The Bible to justify his claims.

Meade earlier said that Nibiru will mark the end of Earth in October, but now he has fixed his mind on September, only until he changes his mind again.

THE BIBLE PASSAGES AND CONSPIRACY THEORISTS

According to media reports, Meade and other conspiracy theorists don't have evidence to keep their theory erect, but are leaning on passages from The Bible to support their theory.

They claim that The Bible passages and the solar eclipse's existence support the idea that the end of times is approaching.

Meade told a news portal this month, "The Great American Eclipse of August 21, 2017, is a major - huge - harbinger."

The conspiracy theorist points to warnings in the Old Testament book of Isaiah, Chapter 13, Verses 9 to 10, which reads, "See, the Day of the Lord is coming - a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger - to make the land desolate and destroy the sinners within it.

"The Stars of Heaven and their constellations will not show their light. The rising Sun will be darkened and the Moon will not give its light."

Meade says this passage is connected to what he has dubbed the "33 Convergence", where a strand of coincidences all include the number 33.

UNDERSTANDING THE 33 CONVERGENCE BETTER TAKING HELP OF THE BIBLE

"When the eclipse begins on August 21, the sunrise will be dark, just as Isaiah predicts,"Meade says.

"The moon involved is called a black moon. These occur about every 33 months. In the Bible, the divine name of Elohim appears 33 times in Genesis.

He added: "The eclipse will start in Lincoln Beach, Oregon - the 33rd state - and end on the 33rd degree of Charleston, South Carolina. Such a solar eclipse has not occurred since 1918, which is 99 years - or 33 times three."

Thirty three days after the US' total solar eclipse - on the 23 September - the stars will align just as the book of Revelation says they will, before the world ends.

"This indeed is an amazing omen and a frightful sign," according to Meade.

NIBIRU, CREATION OF EARTH AND ALIENS

NASA has debunked the unseen planet. Nibiru, or Planet X, was first mentioned in 1976 by Zecharia Sitchin in his cult book 'The 12th Planet'.

The mysterious planet is believed to be home to a race of ancient aliens called the Annunaki, who are thought to be behind the creation of human race.

Author of the UFO Investigations Manual -- Nigel Watson -- supports Sitchin's idea.

"Nibiru collided with a planet called Tiamat that was situated between Mars and Jupiter. The result was the creation of the asteroid belt and planet Earth.

"Nibiru is populated by the Anunnaki, an advanced humanoid race, who visited Earth thousands of years to mine gold in Africa.

"As an outcome of needing workers to carry out these mining operations they used genetics to create Homo Sapiens," Watson said.

The prediction has been wandering around us since decades but the Nibiru prediction of it colliding with earth has definitely caught the attention of many.

However, these doomsday predictions have never actually materialised.

Actor Kamal Haasan, who is currently hosting the Tamil version of Bigg Boss, has threatened to quit as he is upset with the makers of the show, reported Indian Express. Recently, Bigg Boss made headlines after the contestants were asked to perform a task in which they had to behave like differently-abled people in order to earn luxury budget points. The show received a lot of criticism on social media for being insensitive. The 62-year-old actor has said that he would quit as the host if any other socially insensitive task is made part of the show, reported Indian Express.

"I request them (Bigg Boss team) not to repeat such activities on the show hereafter. If it happens again, this show is not important to me," Indian Express quoted Mr Haasan as saying.

Kamal Haasan clarified on the issue, saying that he was not part of planning the day-to-day activities in the Bigg Boss house. "The task that made fun of mentally challenged people was not in a good taste. And I'm actually angry about it. We all have social responsibilities," Indian Express quoted Kamal Haasan as saying.

"You may ask me, why have you not acted a mentally disturbed person in your films? That type of character in my films will not be used for comic relief. He will be the protagonist," he added.

On Saturday, Tamil actress Oviya walked out of the show citing mental health issues. She had allegedly attempted suicide on the show.

Bigg Boss, which started airing from June 25, marks Kamal Haasan's debut on the small screen.

The first season of Bigg Boss Tamil has been in the eye of the storm ever since the show went on air on June 24. Now, a lawyer has lodged a police complaint against show host Kamal Haasan and the producers for allegedly pushing Oviya to attempt suicide.

He has also sought a police investigation against Kamal, the producers of the show, and Vijay TV for allegedly causing mental agony to her to increase their viewership, TRPs, and profit.

Oviya, the star contestant on the show, quit Bigg Boss Tamil after staying in the house for 41 days. Her devil-may-care attitude, boldness and honesty helped her win a lot of admiration from the audience. However, it also became the source of all her problems in the house. She remained a constant target and envy of other housemates.

Oviya is out of Bigg Boss Tamil. The actress ended her 42-day journey in the Kamal Haasan-hosted show on Saturday, 5 August.

The 26-year old was allowed to leave Bigg Boss house midway over health issues. The actress was mentally stressed and was not able to overcome the negativity around her. The inmates had isolated her and Aarav's rejection was the final nain in the coffin that affected her mental health.

In the end, Oviya could not handle the stress and requested the Bigg Boss to send her out of the show.

Before leaving she had a quick chat with Kamal Haasan. During the interaction, the actress confessed that she loves Aarav, but the crazy audience sitting in the show told her in unison that "he is not worth it and fake."

She politely thanked them for showering an unconditional love upon her and said that she respects their views, but this is her personal decision.

After Oviya left the stage, Kamal Haasan started one-on-one conversation with each contestants to talk about Oviya's episode. Bindu Madhavi, Ganesh Venkatraman and Raiza spoke to him and told their side of the stories.

In what can be called a twist in the show, Oviya sought help to address her issues pertaining to mental health on Friday's episode. Her request was considered by the Bigg Boss and asked her to pack her bags. This has triggered massive rumours about her walking out of the show with different theories on social media sites.

Vijay TV has kept mum so far and did not clarify whether she is out of the show or would be back soon. Nonetheless, it posted a picture on its Facebook page in which Oviya is seen interacting with Kamal Haasan. It makes people think that she might be ending her journey.

However, the buzz is that there might be a surprise in store and the channel wants the viewers to watch the show at 8.30 pm.

Coming to the elimination process, the contestants can only be eliminated on the basis of viewers' vote. Going by this rule, she should be back even if she goes out over health issues. And the question that the actress is getting lesser votes than other nominees will not arise as she is enjoying a massive fan following.

That leaves Vaiyapuri and Julie in the danger zone. Our prediction is the former might be shown the door. So far, Namitha, Harathi Ganesh, Anuya, Bharani and Shree have been eliminated from the show.
