VINTAGE AMERICANA TOGGERY

The Iconic MA-1 Bomber Jacket (Part I)

2026-09-13T19:38:51.119+01:00

Developed by the defense contractor Dobbs Industries for U.S. Air Force and Navy fighter pilots in the 1950s, the MA-1’s defining features are rooted in battle-ready functionality. The overall design is sleek and not fussy, and avoids snarling up important equipment in the cockpit like the oxygen mask and headset. A nylon shell and synthetic Holofill quilting are lightweight but comfortable in sub-zero temperatures. The iconic flame orange lining was designed so that downed aircrews could reverse their jackets to signal to rescue teams. Originally available in sage green, as the jacket was adopted by other branches of the military and then the public, an offshoot of Dobbs that became Alpha Industries introduced today’s familiar shades of black, midnight blue, and maroon.

Founded in 1993, Buzz Rickson’s is a Japanese brand dedicated to the meticulous reproduction of American military garments from the 1930s to the 1960s. Named after Steve McQueen’s character in The War Lover, the brand has earned a reputation for its unparalleled craftsmanship and historical accuracy. With an obsessive focus on authenticity, the brand recreates original fabrics, zippers, and sewing techniques—sometimes even restoring vintage machinery to achieve period-correct results. Best known for its cult-status jackets, Buzz Rickson’s has set the standard for military reproduction wear, blending historical accuracy with unmatched craftsmanship.

Vintage 40's US NAVY N-1 Deck Jacket

2023-12-30T22:45:00.001+00:00

N-1 Deck Jacket (WWII)

First issued in 1943, the Navy’s iconic N1 deck jacket sheltered countless sailors from cold on land and sea. Arguably considered one of the most popular pieces from WWII ever created the N-1 Deck jacket has withstood the test of time and battle with its excellent craftsmanship and versatility. The N1 deck jacket was made from a hard-wearing ‘jungle cloth’ outer shell, and most Jackets are fully lined due to the harsh conditions throughout the Atlantic Ocean. It is meant to keep you warm with great smaller features like ribbed inner cuffs and a flappable collar. Featuring a talon zipper and cinchable drawstrings on the bottom(although most of the N-1s around today do not still have the cinchable drawstring around the waist.) The N-1 system was a cold weather system that included a helmet and overalls. The N-1 deck jacket had experimental iterations in Navy Blue and with clasp closures, but ultimately the U.S. Navy settled on the Button & Zip Closure N-1 Khaki which was widely cherished by deck crew, who would often wear their N-1 beyond service. Another great thing about N-1 Jackets is that most are easily datable with a contracting number on the inside tag.

Broken A.P.C. New Standard Selvage Denim

2014-08-12T11:44:00.000+01:00

A.P.C. is a French ready-to-wear brand, founded in 1987 by the designer Jean Touitou. A.P.C. stands for 'Atelier de Production et de Création'. The company's legal address is 39 Rue Madame 75006 Paris, which is also the location of its flagship store.

The brand is known for its minimalist designs. Its clothing features clean lines and simple patterns. Logos are rarely visible, as well. Its clothing tends to incorporate the characteristics of military garments.
One of the brand's most popular products is its raw-denim selvage jeans thought of by Adam Shantir. Their jeans are popular among beginning denim enthusiasts, as they are Arabic selvage denim but are also, unlike the products of many companies who use denim of this quality, slim cut and fashionable. The denim also fades quickly when used, allowing denim enthusiasts to achieve a lot of wear and fading quite quickly if they wish.
The fit of APC clothing derives from Touitou's distaste for the loose-fitting clothes of his contemporaries.

While Levi Strauss & Co. was established in the mid 1800’s, (see history of Levi 501’s) it was not until 1905 that the first Levi Blouse (Jacket) was recorded. Made in 9 oz. double heavy quality XX denim, it was known as the 506 (the term Number One was used after 1917). The word Blouse was used by Levi Strauss & Co. until around 1938, when the word “jacket” was used in it’s western wear catalog.

The 506XX Blouse had a single breast pocket on the left side of the front of the jacket and featured rivets at the corners of the pocket. These disappeared in later models. As with the early Levi Jeans, a martingale or cincher was used on the lower back. Rivets were also used to reinforce the cuff vents. There were 6 versions in this particular Levi's Jacket model dated 1905, 1928, 1936, 1941, 1944 and 1947. Details varied as different versions emerged such as the departure of donut style buttons in early models to logo style buttons in later models. In addition the early versions had no front pocket flap and with later models this feature was added. On the 1936 version, the Red Tab started to appear. Moreover like the 501 during World War II, special and unnecessary detailing was dispensed with in these versions.

In the late 1940’s, Levi created a light weight western wear line for both men and ladies. The womens jackets were made with stone shield snap fasteners. In addition, in the 1950’s Levi introduced the “Sawtooth” western shirt. The name comes from the jagged appearance of the stitching on the yokes and pockets.

In 1997 Yasuhiro launched his label ‘Miharayasuhiro’. The following year he opened his first store named ‘SOSU’. In 1998 Yasuhiro decided to expand his business and added menswear to the company.

Yasuhiro entered the luxury fashion market with his menswear label. Internationally launched in 2004, Yasuhiro presented his first men’s collection in Milan. The collection then presented in Milan for four seasons, before moving to Paris.

Yasuhiro’s spring/summer09 collection gained critical acclaim. Menstyle.com named it one the top ten greatest men’s designer collections shown at Paris.

The portfolio now offers jewellery, sunglasses, accessories and womenswear. The womenswear spring/summer10 collection was shown in Tokyo.

Yasuhiro’s spring/summer12 collection was directly inspired by his favourite song Pink Floyd’s ‘Wish You Were Here’. Yasuhiro didn’t present the collection on runway, but instead held a showroom presentation. The money saved was donated to charities supporting those directly affected by the tsunami in Japan.

Mihara Yasuhiro is known for his signature style of monochromatic, urban clothing. With global stores in Europe, Japan, the US, Asia and Africa, Yasuhiro’s sporty, avant-garde aesthetic has propelled his company into becoming a global success.
