Here's a great story I just came across. It seems wherever there is a demand, dodgy people will try to come up with a scam. This article describes a number of philatelist scams of the past. Here's a snippet -

The next that was heard of him, he was in New York having changed his name and status to Prince James I of the Principality of Trinidad. In New York, he called on an unsuspecting printer and ordered a series of stamps for his “realm”.

This amazing little doo-hickey is apparently from around 1900 and is an eye-glass hook. These hooks were pinned to the clothing and attached to a chain connected to the eyeglasses. See? Ever since glasses were invented, people have been forgetting where they put them. Hence, the invention of the eyeglass chain and hook.
