Is it just me, or does this color combo have you swooning too? For some reason, this combination makes this girl very happy. Maybe its because yellow is known as a happy color, while grey adds a calming effect? Hmmm. being muy contento in my little yellow heaven is not so bad so I'll stop trying to figure it out. Instead, I'll just let it be.

Summer Fun: Interview with Sugarcube Vintage

Hey guys. Hope you have been enjoying the first week of summer here in the Northern Hemisphere!

I sure have been. The boyfriend has a boat along the Pacific Ocean here in Southern Cali, and I just enjoyed a wonderful weekend down there. And just to be clear, when I say wonderful weekend, I mean a weekend in which I did absolutely nothing except for taking long naps in the warm afternoons, and eating the yummy Mexican food Cali has to offer. There's nothing quite like the food down here, I must say.

So besides taking time to work on things at Vintage Fix, lately I've been collaborating and meeting tons of wonderful folks on Etsy as well. I'm very happy to be a part of a wonderful team there called "The Brigade" where we spend a lot of time encouraging each other and helping to promote each other's shops in any way we can.

Today, I wanted to introduce you to my friend Bec at Sugarcubevintage, who also sells amazing vintage. Her story starts in the mid-west where she spent her childhood in auctions with her grandparents (how cute) and ends in Portland with a Double Soy Latte in a coffee shop with her Mac. My kind of woman.

Vintagefix: How did you get interested in vintage?
Bec: When I was little, my grandparents lived in the Midwest and used to take me to
auctions every weekend, early training in finding a bargain. We’d pile into the
wood panel station wagon, drive through the countryside, sit for hours on high rise
bleachers in dusty overcrowded auction houses, usually bid on some boxes of fabric
for my grandmother who was a quilter, or some carpentry tools for grandpa, then stop
for ice cream on the way home – sometimes I even got to hold the bidding paddle!
I loved every second of those days!

Vintagefix: How long have you been collecting/selling vintage?
Bec: I’ve been collecting for as long as I can remember - cameras, globes, tins, books…
I just started selling last July on Etsy after moving back to Portland from Tokyo
(where I lived for 5 years).

Vintagefix: What is your favorite time period or era you like to sell?
Bec: If I had to pick I’d say Mid-century but mostly I buy things I would like in my own
home. Unfortunately that often means it’s hard to part with things. My husband is
convinced we’re going to end up on an episode of ‘Hoarders’ .

Vintagefix:What else do you do apart from working on your shop? job, hobbies, etc?

Bec: I was trained and worked as a designer but somehow I always managed to make

vintage part of the job. I worked as a graphic designer and photo stylist for different

ad agencies, and an illustrator/animator for a media company. While in Tokyo I

worked as a trend researcher for a New York company. I started Sugar Cube Vintage

on my return to the US but still take on freelance projects doing prop and photo

styling in Tokyo and here in Portland.

Vintagefix: What's your favorite part about selling vintage?

Bec: The fact that every piece is unique and has a story keeps me inspired.

Of course I always love it when other stylists and producers from big retailers (sorry,

my lips are sealed…) use my products for their shoots.

Vintagefix: Was there any particular item you were selling that you wanted to keep for

yourself, or felt connected to in some way?

Bec: When I first started on Etsy I sold a librarian bell from an estate sale that I still regret.

It was one of the most interesting estate sales I’ ve ever been too. It was the estate of a school librarian who traveled the world when she retired. She had the most amazing collection of vintage books and trinkets. The bell would have been a nice memento to keep. I still think about that sale and all the things I passed up and should have bought.

VintageFix: Describe a perfect day for you.

Bec: My ideal day would go something like this: double soy latte with my Mac at Portland

Stumptown coffee, hitting estate sales for new inventory, lunch at the farmer’ s

market, hike at forest park, happy hour margaritas at Por Que No with friends, eve at

home chilling out with my hubby and 2 ragdoll cats, Winston and Pimms.

Vintagefix: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Bec: I would love to move back overseas and open a second Etsy shop selling local items.

I’m pretty open to wherever I land and a bit of a gypsy at heart so I don’t plan too far

Wooden wedding inspiration

Wow. What is it about this time of year that makes everyone want to get married? The warmth, the holiday get-togethers, not to mention we are finishing up spring here in the U.S. and the birds and the bees have been doing just what God intended them to do!

I was a bridesmaid in my older sis' wedding a couple weeks ago, and my roommate AND bf's sis are planning their weddings as well! Talk about wedding feva!

So it's pretty hard for a girl not to have wedding on the brain. Instead of wondering why is hasn't happened for me and my bf of 6.5 years, I decided to become inspired by all the amazing loveliness that Etsy has to offer. Many of my pieces are wood or french related, which I'm majorly swooning over at the moment!

Etsy Front Page Feature!

How are you doing on these lovely spring days? So I know I've been a little MIA, but....I figured I could make up for it by sharing something I'm super excited about. My team (the Global Arts Team) and I made it to the front page of Etsy, thanks to an inspirational treasury I made the other day! This is not only exciting for me, because I feel like I was FINALLY noticed for one of my treasuries (which I take very seriously by the way) but it feels good to do something for the team I just became a part of.

Creative Packaging Ideas for jewelry at Vintage Fix!

Hey guys!

I hope all is well in your lives these days! I know that I've truly been enjoying the small bits of warmth that's been scattered amongst Southern California lately. What a blessing it is! Let's here it for spring!

Among all this lovely weather, I've been working on new ways to add a handmade touch to Vintage Fix, but still keep the look of my shop consistent. It's so important for me to still have my things look retro or vintage-y even it they aren't.

As you may know, my retro button studs have been up since Valentines day, as they were a promotional item I came up with to celebrate the month of love, but now since I've decided to keep them up as a customizable item for anyone to make any time of year, I felt I could get really creative with shipping them.

I chose to incorporate some items I had on hand, like vintage buttons and vintage fabric to wrap them Furoshiki style, a style I've been obsessed with recently and the reason for doing this is to not only re-purpose my own fabric, but to offer the fabric in a cute way so that it may be re-used by my customers in any type of project they may need it for. Everybody wins!

Here's what I came up with:

Step 1: Materials

a piece of scrap fabric, fabric scissors (not pictured), measuring tape, twine, a button or charm, a small craft box, burlap material, a rubber stamp to decorate a note, a stamp ink pad.

Step 2:

Cut the fabric to approx. a 9" x 9' square. Feel free to make the square bigger or smaller to suit your needs. Just make sure its a square.

Step 3

Cut the burlap material to fit the inside of your small craft box (both can be purchased from a craft store).

Step 4:

Fit the cut piece of burlap into your box and attach your earrings or jewelry. I used my customizable studs, which can be purchased here.

Step 5: Make a note.

Handmade notes are a wonderful way to show the person your giving the gift to how much time you took to make it special. I always type my notes with my vintage typewriter and I stamped a butterfly for this one (feel free to be creative here).

Step 6:

Cut the note smaller to fit under your box (Or you can attach the note on the outside of your wrapped box with the charm by hole-punching it and tying it on with the twine). Place note and box diagonally on the piece of fabric with fabric face down.

Step 7:

Fold top right corner over the box and tuck under.

Step 8:

Fold bottom left corner over the box and fold under also. It should resemble a crepe :)

Step 9:

Flip it over.

Step 10:

Bring both leftover ends together in the middle and tie them together.

Step 11:

Tie on charm with the twine.

Voila! A cute way to re-purpose fabric and wrap a gift!

I think many people can agree that one of the best things in life is love. Love can be an enabler, a leader, a teacher of lessons, a gift, a past, a memory, or a thoughtful intention.

Lately, I've come across some amazing sellers on Etsy who know just how to get their messages across about love in discreet ways. To me, it's more clever to express love in a way that only you and the person you love would understand. Its makes the bond more special, don't you think? I do.

I've always loooooved fabric covered button studs. I've checked them out on Etsy. and on various sellers websites, but noticed a similar theme- they all are exactly the same with some type of pretty fabric or picture on them! So, one day recently, I decided that I wanted to change the way we modern women wore button studs - with sweet little messages on them. How cool is that? Messages about love, life, and everything in between is what you can expect from this girl shortly. But for now, in celebration of Valentines Day in a couple weeks, I will be focusing on love notes, customizable messages, names of those you love, initials, etc.

The Blues Vintage Collection

I don't know what it is about collections that draws me in so much, but I love creating them. As with many other posts I've done in the past, I'm a sucker for pairing things with a similar theme, color, fabric, etc.

I didn't realize that I have been going through a blue phase until I realized that the past few vintage bags I've been picking up have had one thing in common: yes, the color blue.

New Years Eve VINTAGE GLAM tips!

One of the best things about being a female is not having any particular reason to look your best. We don't need to have an excuse to get creative with our makeup. We don't need permission to wear a particular dress. And we certainly to need anyone's approval to look glamorous!

However, New Years Eve is a perfect reason to have fun with your look and be creative by adding a vintage flair.

Long live the days where wearing your staple LBD (little black dress) will suffice. NO! You must be daring and more adventurous then ever!

With that in mind, I came up with a creative twist on the whole New Years Eve look. I'm tired of relying on classics or staples. After all, the new year means a whole new you, so why not dress that way?

Here are some tips on being creative this New Years Eve:

Swedish Walnuts...as promised

So, I like to ramble on, usually about random things on my Twitter account: #vintagefixstore. Nothing wrong with that right? The way I see it is, I really enjoy reading other people's ramdom tweets about their everyday musings, and so, I should be doing my part to.

Today, I did my best to share how delicious these Swedish Walnuts were, that a coworker of mine had made, and I really couldn't do them any justice, except to say that I think I want to move to Sweden. There's only so much one can say in 140 characters, after all.

In order to share all good things in my life (okay, carefully edited things), I wanted to share this recipe with you guys. I think just reading the recipe should make some of your mouths start to water. Oh and please share this with others, as we are just around the corner from Christmas, and they would make a great treat to bring or serve at any party or get-together you may partake in. Enjoy!

Swedish Walnuts:

Melt one stick of butter or margarine and melt in a 9x13 in. pan.
Beat 2 egg whites. Add 1(one) cup of sugar and a pinch of salt. Beat for 2 or 3 minutes. With a spoon, stir in 5 cups of walnuts until well-coated.
Spread nut mixture on top of melted margarine.
Sprinkle cinnamon over nuts.
Bake at 325 for 45-55 minutes, stirring every ten minutes.
Feel free to add more cinnamon the first couple of times your stir.

Finally!

After a couple of months being preoccupied with graduate school and a crazy workload, I am back and going to kick butt this Christmas season! Don't worry about me being late in the game people, your girl, Brooke is ready to shine! Oh, and so is Vintage fix! Woohoo!

I took the pledge!

I, Brooke, creator of Vintage Fix, pledge to participate in the Etsy Success Holiday Boot Camp to the best of my abilities. I vow to check in every week, do my homework and support my fellow Holiday Boot Campers. I will read the weekly newsletters and blog posts, check in on the weekly forum thread, read the weekly blog post, check off the checklists and salute the mascot. I promise to share what I've learned with those who need it, support my fellow Etsy indiepreneurs and, most of all, have a positive and persistent attitude. Advice.

So, wow another month has gone by! Isn't it crazy how we always say were busy, but what are we so busy doing? It's one of theose comments that you say to get yourself off the hook, but are you really THAT busy, or does it make you feel better about yourself to tell other people how busy you are? So I'm not even going to go there.

[Something to think about, maybe even meditate on.....]

Actually, the real reason I dropped by this morning is to share a great piece of advice my boyfriend of five and a half years just shared with me. I'm not sure if I should give a background story on this, so let me just share the advice first and if I need to elaborate more, I will.

He said that he just had a conversation with an old man around the age of 100. And of course, I don't know about you guys, but when we ( I'm talking about my bf and I ) meet someone of that age, we can't help but wonder what the secret is to living that long? What did they discover along the road of life that led them to where they are today? We're both very philosophical, I know.

The old man said, " You have to be able to laugh most things off " - hmmmm...think about that for a second.

To me that means that my lovely neighbor who keeps whistling at me everytime I come out of my house, and when I kindly ask him to stop, refuses, I should be able to laugh it off instead of seriously contemplating what will do to his house, car, etc.

To me it means when I get stuck in a traffic jam on my way to some very important place, I need to just laugh it off, preferably right by the window of the cars right next to you, so they can wonder to themselves about what in the world is so dang funny!

To me it means when I make a comment about what my bf is doing with his life and get a smart ass remark or eye rolling from certain unnamed members of my family, I should laugh about how narrowminded and ignorant they are, instead of letting make my blood boil!

Despite all that is going on in this crazy economy, there has been one amazingly good thing that has come from the ruins - ESTATE SALES. WOOT!

So I started outside of one amazing house located amongst the beautiful orange groves we have out here, trying to look in every little nook and cranny (because that's how I roll) and came across an amazing selection of clutches. And I'm talking about the kind that have the prettiest of details. The first one I'm in love with has a lovely little clasp that's too pretty to put into words, so I'm going to to just show you.

So....awesome right?

And you simply can't beat the pretty color. It's subtly sheen in a light gold, absolutely perfect for a night out with the girls, or your man. Doesn't matter. Either way, you're going to rock it.

Okay, so this next one, looks really simple on the outside. It's a soft creamy, white, and to be honest, I didn't even think to open it up until I got home. (actually my roomate opened it up) and I was happily surprised

So, not only does this have a cute coin purse inside, but another pouch attached with a small gold chain. Perfect.

So, here I am, thinking that I have already found some amazing little clutches, and my morning is turning into a successful one, but my stars must have all been aligned on this particular morning, because at another amazing Victorian house in our lovely little Redlands town, I found this gorgeous doctor's bag just waiting to be claimed. And it's made by the one and only American Tourister!

You don't have to be a tourist to appreciate this amazing bag!

What does independence mean to you?

So, lately I've been doing alot of thinking....crazy I know. I've been out of school for a little over a year now, I'm surprised I still have some brain cells floating around in there.

All jokes aside though, what does it mean for people to celebrate indepedence?

Many people, especially here in the States looooove B-B-Qs with close friends and family while they share stories over burgers, hot dogs, and beer, Or at least, that's what always happens at my celebrations......

drumroll please......[And speaking about celebrations, this wonderful holiday couldn't be more fitting for me in my life as I just moved into my first place with a close friend of mine, and I am officially a free woman! Woohooo!]

Anywho, my independence means:

No more putting away dishes until I'm good and ready to do so.
Walking around in my undies.
Eating and drinking what I want.
Waking up to the sound of my own thoughts instead of other people trying to wake me.
Singing (very loudly) in the shower just becasue I can.
Reminiscing with my roomate about random things over coffee. or tea. or beer.
Spur of the moment trips.

Current obsession

So, lately my eye has been fixated on something. And by something I mean many things. Bracelets, cuffs, adornments for your arm, I don't care what you may call them- I simply call them an obsession. And a good one at that. Most are gorgeous leather straps with intricate detail, a few with a little more sparkle, and some pretty darn basic ones. But each one I fell madly in love with, and am seriously contemplatingpurchasing these little beauties before paying rent. Seriously. Enjoy!

Mother's Day Shananigans

Hey friends!

How was everyone's mother's day? Although, I am not a mother yet, I love the idea behind mother's day. A day when we show our love to the women who birthed us, fed us, wiped us, watched us, bathed us, cleaned us, taxi-d us, took care of us even when they didn't want to, and most importantly loved us!

{Here's what I did:}

I custom made my mom a tank top using a wonderful little website called http://www.zazzle.com/. It may seem corny, but it came out oh so cute! The shirt actually was bound to happen as it started out of a joke, and our little bichon Charles (whom were so freaking crazy about, it's sick!) at the center of it (as he usually is) and my younger sister and I always said we wanted to make shirts of it, so I thought, what the heck, "Now's as good a time as any!"

Here's the background: One night my mom and I were thinking of new decorations we could put on top of her kitchen cupbourds since she has about 2 feet of space to her ceiling. I made a comment about how there are those large word decorations that say "family" and "love" and wouldn't it be funny if we had one that said "Charles" and another one that said " Number 1" and people would come over and say, "Oh, is Charles your husband?' and we would very matter of factly say, "No, Charles is our dog," - Okay, maybe it was one of those you had to be there moments, but we laughed for about 15 minutes! And it's been an inside joke (well, not anymore) ever since!

Crazy week!

Wow, you guys, have I had the craziest rollercoaster of a week!

[Can I just comment on how nice it is to reflect on this week right now to the sounds of birds and a cool breeze coming from outside. Awesome.]

I literally had a ton of things going on this past week. Instead of boring you with all the details, I wanted to list them- because I love making lists! Yay for lists!

*Saturday, April, 24th: My bf and I got his and hers scooters! Woot!

*Sunday, April 25th: I fell off my shiny red scooter after leaving church to a series of unfortunate circumstances. Ouch! Felt that one right on my tailbone.

*Monday-Wednesday: Accepted a substitute job at a childcare center for infants. Been a long timne since I have changed diapers! Worked full time. Boy was I tired.

*Wednesday, April 28th: Got sick. poop.

*Friday, April 30th: Went miniature golfing and lost.

Saturday, May 1st: Dyed my hair and only my roots took to the color. Yes, it looks like crap.
- went to a wedding - hair still looked like crap.

Sunday, May 2nd: Went to the bf's for a birthday party, and he gave me my very own biker leather jacket. Now I reeaallly feel cool on my scooter!

Today: Lazy day filled with taking of pictures and listing a new item here

Hey guys! Happy Friday! I just wanted to end this workweek with a lovely array of handsome men for you to fiest your eyes on. JK. But don't tell me that didn't cross your mind when I had the word stud in my post title!

No, instead I've been spending some time looking through Etsy (not that surprising) and I came across a really adorable pair of stud earrings by AnnaRubyKing. Now, if you guys haven't seen her work or heard of her, check her out because her attention to detail and color will blow you away. No, literally.

More importantly though, Annarubyking inspired me to create a collage, among the many I already have under my belt, of different types and styles of stud earrings. Each one of these babies was specifically hand-picked for a reason, mainly being that they were so darn cute, but also, something I would definitely wear. And they are so spring-y! Love it!
