One year ago, right about this time, many, many doors abruptly closed for my family and me; and we were forced to make some difficult changes and decisions. After many moments of evaluation and reflection, I find it so incredible what a difference a year makes!

One year ago, my husband lost a job that had consumed his life for 12 years.

Today, my husband is creating his own, with a balance and grace few can ever achieve.

One year ago, I was a stay at home Mom to two baby boys, just going day to day.

Today, I can add business owner and dream maker, to my list.

One year ago, my boys adhered to strict schedules designed by a super tired Mama.

Today, my boys have the freedom to be kids.

One year ago, my husband barely saw his family.

Today, my family is loving and strong.

One year ago, I was betrayed and hurt by people I thought were my friends.

Today, I have the most amazing group of inspiring women I am lucky to call my friends.

One year ago, I had to try so hard.

Today, things come effortlessly.

One year ago, I had no sense of belonging.

Today, I am a part of a supportive community.

One year ago, I was filling my house with flea market treasures.

Today, I am packing up boxes and boxes and boxes of things to give to others.

One year ago, the sky and earth were darker than they are today.

Today, the world is a rainbow; and the ocean is calling my name.

One year ago, I was only half of the person I am today.

Today, I am incredibly grateful for having gone through this growth.

Today, everything is different because everything has changed!

Change makes a difference!

I love change!

I love making a difference!

I love today, and every day . . .

Now that everything is different!

A Love Letter

Dear Loves,

I truly cannot believe that it has been over a month since my last blog post. Over the last couple of months, my life has been a series of ups and downs. While everything is relatively incredibly positive, there are always moments of doubt and fear, followed by confirmations of truth and love. In other words, I have been on the "ride of my life."

In retrospect, I know that everything is part of the process and to trust in the process; because everything always works out exactly how it was meant to be. I need to remind myself of this in the months ahead, as we pack up our home, let go of a lot of those "things" we don't "need" anymore, and continue to move on to the next {very exciting} chapter of our lives.

I feel so blessed to have such an amazing group of women around me; from those I have met in this magical blog world, to those I have recently met and feel like I have known forever, and those that I have known my entire life. Friendship is one of the greatest gifts in life.

I feel so blessed to have a beautifully loving and supportive family, who have embraced our newest member, "Mindful Octopus," with enthusiasm and excitement. Family is the greatest love of all!

I feel so blessed to have the freedom, in this blog space, to "check in" and share my thoughts and feelings, even if they may sound totally elusive, at times. Hopefully, they will resonate with you and your life, in some magical way.

All in all, I guess what I am trying to say, is that, not a day goes by that I am not forever grateful for it all - all the love and all the bullshit! For . . .

We live in a day dream . . . with the love, support, and freedom we need, to create a life beyond our wildest imaginations! Because nothing else matters . . . in life and in love.

Wow! It amazes me that it has been 2 weeks since I have last written a post or visited this special blog world! It has also been 2 weeks since I officially launch Mindful Octopus, my storytelling, yoga, and art program for kids. I know many of you have also been incredibly inspired, through your blogs, to create a company, project, or career. I give a lot of credit to our blog world for opening doors of connection and creativity. It is truly a magical place!

Thank you for all your love and support while I have been {m.i.a} in an "Octopus's Garden."

Scenes From A Dream Come True

Friday was officially the launch of Mindful Octopus! I offer 8 Mindful Octopus classes a week, with the hopes of adding more, as we grow. Creating Mindful Octopus has been a dream come true! I never could have imagined that I would be a storytelling yoga teacher in Laguna Beach, sharing and teaching yoga, meditation, mindfulness, and art to the little yogis of our world! It is a honor and a gift that I am incredibly thankful for every day.

My family, friends, and the community have already been so wonderfully supportive of Mindful Octopus. Not only do I have two amazing local businesses, the AR4T gallery and The Art of Fitness providing me with the space to offer the classes, but the idea of 'trade' has landed me an official Mindful Octopus 'uniform,' courtesy of the fabulous Novella Royale! {If you have not been introduced to the loveliness of Novella Royale, it is a pleasure to introduce this amazing clothing and accessory company to you.} Don't you just love the top I am wearing in the first pic and the bells in the bottom pic!? I am in love. {another local california company founded by a mom}

So, what I have learned thus far: Always remember to not be afraid to put what it is that you want, out there in the Universe. The Universe works in very magical ways. Always believe in your self and your dreams. Remember to give thanks every day! And always remember to be LOVE!

The Creatives

I have always believed in supporting your local businesses. It is important to be a part of the community in which you live, and in turn, helping to create a sustainable and loving environment.

When I moved to Southern California, I was incredibly impressed with the number of international businesses that call this beautiful place in the world, "home." But when I began immersing myself in the local community, a world of creatives opened up to me. I am forever inspired by their dreams, their products, and their visions; and I am forever grateful for their pioneering spirit that has paved the way for people, like me.

I love to go on early-morning jogs outside -- when the sun is just starting to peak over the horizon. It's a good quiet time to think and draw inspiration for the day.

I would have to say my grandmother's old silver set that she recently passed down to me. It's beautiful.

3. What is your favorite comfort food?
Macaroni and cheese!

4. When did you realize that you were an artist?
n/a (I wouldn't really consider myself an artist, but we do work with aspiring artists and feature their sandal designs on our site.)

Sometimes in life, you are gifted with a special, magical moment; where your life is forever changed, in ways you never could have imagined. When I serendipitously discovered Octopus Ink Illustration, I was gifted with this very moment; and the Mindful Octopus dream was imagined.

What Goes Around Comes Around

You know that saying; "A picture is worth a thousand words?" Well, this picture of {from left to right} my brother Barrett, me, my Dad, my brother Elliott, and my Mom, is "worth" way more than "a thousand words" to me.

Flash back 17 years {wow}, I was adjusting to my new life as a boarding school student, living thousands of miles away from my family and friends, and feeling very much like a "fish out of water." But I was settling in nicely, had made a few good friends, and was excelling both academically and athletically. It was "Parent's Weekend" and I couldn't have been more excited for my parents to come visit me, meet my new friends, and see the place I now called "home." They arrived, watched my field hockey game, and walked around the campus, remarking how impressed and proud they were that I was in this place. I was equally impressed and proud to show them off; because in my mind, we were a "perfectly normal" family, full of love, comfort, and support. I always knew, in my heart, that I could count on my parents for anything and everything.

But what happened next, was something I never could have counted on: My parents and I went to their hotel room so that they could "get ready" for our impending dinner with my best friend and her parents. We were all sitting around, still reflecting and commenting on the wonderfulness of my new "home," when my parents sat down on the bed across from me and told me that they had something they wanted to "talk to me about." Immediately, I thought that my Mom was pregnant. Sadly, the "conversation" began very differently than I could have ever imagined: "We are getting a divorce."

Tears were shed, feelings of anger, confusion, and shock were too overwhelming to digest, and promises of "we are still best friends" and "everything is going to be ok," were thrown out there in quiet desperation. Ultimately, these feelings and thoughts wouldn't be the firsts of the heartbreaks and disappointments I would experience over the next 10 years because of my parents' divorce.

Many journals, prayers, wishes, and dreams were created and imagined over the years, with the hope and intention that one day, my family would be all together again; laughing, loving, and enjoying each other, while celebrating the special and unique bond we naturally and organically share as a family.

When I became a Mom, many of the feelings I had suppressed for so long about my parents' divorce, rose to the surface. I wanted {so very much} for my boys to share special moments with both of my parents together in the same room, at the same time, sharing in the same magic of the holidays and the every-days. And most importantly, I wanted my boys to believe that no matter what happens in life, love conquers all!

17 years later, December 25th, 2011, love proved to conquer all!! My Mom, Dad, brothers, husband, and two little boys, were all together . . . . the 8 of us. It was a rare and special moment; and one that I am not really sure will ever happen, ever again.

But what I do know for certain, is that I will cherish that moment forever in my heart: A constant reminder to always BELIEVE in LOVE and a lesson on knowing that the most valuable things in our lives are truly PRICELESS.

Wow! It is official! The holidays are here! Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah. We celebrate all of the holidays in our home; so I am looking forward to eating yummy latkes and matzo ball soup, playing dreidel, lighting the candles, watching our boys open one present each, and telling the story Hanukkah.

Speaking of stories, {and why i have been mia} On Saturday, I taught two Mindful Octopus, storytelling yoga classes, at the AR4T gallery in Laguna Beach. It was amazing! I taught a total of 20 wonderful kids. I told the Native American story of "How Raven Gifted Light to the World." After I told the story, the kids helped me re-tell the story using yoga poses. After the asana practice, I lead the kids through a mindfulness meditation, reminding them of the light that shines within themselves. I also emphasized the importance of taking the time, especially during the busy holiday season, to give the gift of presence. Presence is the ability to be here right now; for when you are present you are naturally in a relaxed state.

To further emphasize the meaning of the story within themselves, they each created an art project using pine needles. We all had so much fun! I can't wait for the next Mindful Octopus class!

The Love of a Bohemian Mama

My inspiring Mom posted this remarkable video on her facebook page the other day; and I have been watching it over and over again, as if it is my daily meditation or prayer. Directed and produced by award winning, visionary Louie Schwartzberg, "The Happiness Revealed Project" is a beautiful message of imagination and gratitude, by a child and an elder. {note: begins about 4 minutes in but the introduction is magical}

It is a simple message of truth that in today's world is almost forgotten. It is my hope, that as we look back and reflect on the events and lessons of 2011, we will be reminded of all we have to be grateful for; and in return, how important it is to open our hearts and live life to its' fullest!

Gratefulness, mindfulness, and happiness are the nirvana of nouns! We learn them as a child and we teach them to our children. But as we enter into 2012, I believe it is time to turn these nouns into verbs! We have been "talking the talk" but now is the time to "walk the walk." For as the narrator in the video so eloquently says: "Open your heart and Have a good day!"

I am ready for some {very} good days! How about you?

Scenes from a Hospitable Weekend

We kicked off the weekend with an artists reception at {our favorite creatives gallery} AR4T: Artists Republic for Tomorrow, in honor and celebration of their amazing collaborative exhibit and event: THE STORYTELLERS. THE STORYTELLERS is "a holiday show for kids and the kid inside all of us." A curated partnership of artists and writers, THE STORYTELLERS is a collection of pieces that will inspire, humor, and delight us all! {Check out a sneak peak here.}

We were so impressed and intrigued by THE STORYTELLERS that we couldn't wait to share it with James and Oliver; so the very next night, we stopped in again for a magical evening of art and ornament making with some of the cutest, coolest, and most creative kids "on the block." But we were hardly surprised because this special "Hospitality Night" event was part of a larger collaboration with Mini & Maximus, the raddest clothing line designed for kids and largely by kids. Every year, Mini & Maximus organizes a kids' art show and fundraiser creatively called Milk & Cookies; and this year they are hosting it with AR4T, at the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach. The event, benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach, is this Saturday, the 10th. {Check out more details here.}

And, on Saturday, December 17th, AR4T, in further celebration of THE STORYTELLERS, has graciously invited Mindful Octopus to create a Kids Pop-Up Yoga Studio. I will be offering 3 storytelling yoga classes at AR4T, from 11-12, 1-2, and 3-4. {Check out the official flyer here.}

I am truly grateful to be aligned and partnered with such amazing, creative, and inspiring people - THE DREAMERS.

Happy Birthday!

One year ago today, December 1st, 2010, my journey began here, on the pages of Vintage is for Lovers. I was a stay at home Mom, caring for two very special baby boys, but all along, desperately searching for a spark of inspiration and connection, in between feedings and diaper changes. I have always loved to be creative and share ideas. But what started out as "following" the trend of home decor blogs, {it was the nesting period i was in} has ultimately turned into a life changing discovery of who I AM! 252 posts and counting, 229 of the best "Lovers" in the world, and 1 decision later, Vintage is for Lovers represents a personal journey of LOVE.

From "Lovers Lane" to "Love Links," to "The Love of a Bohemian Mama," and everything in between and beyond, I am forever grateful for the freedom to express myself and the special people who have taken the time to listen and share the love right back to me.

What I have learned over the past year is that blogging is not just about social medias and creative outlets - It is about giving back to ourselves and to each other! It is all about LOVE.

And once again, we all had such a magical time at the Sawdust Winter Fantasy Festival, held every year at the holiday time in Laguna Beach, California. {The Festival will be going on every weekend through December 11th. You can find out more about the Festival here.} The Festival is truly a winter wonderland filled with amazing art, crafts for the kids, and special surprises around every corner!

Nothing makes me want to put on a pair of angel wings and fly around with a garland of flowers in my hair, than the sight of twinkle lights! Here is a wonderful DIY on how to take a custom Bokeh photograph {like the one above} with just a few simple household supplies. You can even make shapes for special effects:

Star Projector

I am in love with this star projector that projects thousands of stars onto your ceilings and walls. {You can even "align it to your location and the time of year, so it projects a map of the clear night's sky all around you."} And with a price tag of only $22, it is a dream come true. {that is until I realized that you have to put the whole thing together with an instructional manual that is pages and pages long. oh well. still totally worth it.} Project!

Restoration Hardware

If you want to keep it simple, these Starry String Lights are delicately beautiful. I purchased a couple boxes the other day and can't wait to put them up this weekend. They come in 4 different lengths {5 ft., 10 ft., 15 ft., and 20 ft.} and two different wire tones {silver and copper}. The 5 ft and 10 ft strings are battery powered, which is super cool. The 15 ft. and 20 ft. require an electrical adapter.

I have been "being mindful" and extra, extra busy over the last couple of months, creating this! My new baby/company/passion project:

Mindful Octopus

I mentioned a little, here and there, as to the journey I have been on, with Sydney Solis, to becoming a storytelling yoga teacher for kids. And today I feel inspired to share more with you; because I know how loving and supportive you are and have always been to me and my life. I couldn't be more excited to {finally} share with you Mindful Octopus!

Mindful Octopus is a storytelling yoga program for kids. We introduce the practice of yoga and meditation through the art of storytelling. We plant the seeds of health, imagination, and mindfulness through story, yoga, and art.

In this beginning, Mindful Octopus will be offering classes through partnerships with local community centers, schools, and special events. I will be posting all appearances and class schedules on the Mindful Octopus website, as well as stories, yoga poses, and art projects you can do at home with your kids. It is my dream that Mindful Octopus will grow organically to become a brick and mortar studio, product line, and most importantly, a valuable and sought after program for kids of all ages.
