Today has been a day. My phone started ringing at 8:30 this morning. As it turned out, my 6 year old nephew broke his tooth and had to go to the dentist to get the rest of it pulled out. I ended up skipping work for a while and sitting over at my sisters with her remaining children: a 4 year old, a 2 year old, and a 2 month old.

Actually, I ended up having a lot of fun. The baby slept the entire time, the 4 year old loves to hang with me, and the girl... the 2 year old actually acknowledged my existence for the very first time EVER. Usually when I watch her, she cries the entire time. If I talk to her she hides behind the chair. If I pick her up she cries more. Somehow today, holy cow, she was under the couch avoiding me... then suddenly out of nowhere stood up, and pointed at the picture she drew and showed it to me!!! This was followed by an hour of smiles, playing, laughter... and I was even given my first kiss goodbye!

THEN

I got to work, realized that I had left my work bag at my sisters, had to head back then found out that Drake (the one with the broken tooth) bit the heck out of his lip because of the Novocaine and was bleeding all over the face. Poor kid looks like he lost a fight now.

Instead of going all the way back to the office again, I decided to come home to work. It looks like I will be working the rest of the night.

Oh, and did I mention that I got BIT by Mr. Bubbles on the back of my hand because he was being a mean brat? That was really the icing on my day. Grrr.

Vintage 1950s Kitsch ATOMIC Rockabilly Men's Cabana Swim Set - Swim Trunks & Linen Top in Excellent Condition

This is an authentic man's cabana swim set from the 1950s. It features a short sleeve shirt with a fabulous atomic print in blues, greens and black. The shirt appears to be made of high quality linen. Closure is by five plastic buttons up the front of the shirt, and a sixth button at the neck which buttons closed with a loop. The shirt has three patch pockets on the front, two at each front bottom side, and one breast pocket.

Etsy Love! Vintage Dresses, Bellbottoms, Robe & Fur. Me and My Pretty Chicken!

So I have officially had a store on Etsy for 11 days now. I could never figure out the hype with Etsy, though my best friend has been selling her hair accessories on there for years now. But I finally figured it it:

ETSY IS FUN!!

Seriously, I feel like I'm back in art school again. I get to network with other artists and see what they have been creating. It's like Facebook... but funner... and it pays! :)

And it's so simple to use. Why wasn't I on Etsy sooner?! The only thing I shake my fist at Etsy for is that I got really excited to see that an app for Etsy came out for the iphone only to discover that it apparently doesn't work on crotchety old iPhones like my ancient 3G to which it just tells me it is "incompatible." Poo.

I am still continuing to sell some on Ebay as auction-style listings have many benefits, and it also allows my items to be seen by a wider audience, but sadly Ebay has been hiking up its fees like crazy lately. And Etsy has way more of a cozy community vibe than Ebay could ever have.

Also, my remodeled website is nearing completion. I saw a working draft of it yesterday and all I can say is it is AWESOME. I'm so very excited! :)

Below I am going to show some nice new listings I have on Etsy & Ebay... but FIRST, I want to show off the awesome pic that my hubby took of me and my chicken, "Daphne" (taken on his newly born iPhone 4-whatever sparkling showoff phone. If only my husband would start drinking, I really think I could convince him to trade phones with me.)

She's so pretty. She's a rare Ohio Buckeye Chicken. Once we get the farm I'm going to get more Buckeyes! I seriously think she could qualify as a show chicken. Her coloring is STUNNING.

I don't think I have sported the turtleneck-sweatshirt look since about 1992 but this was taken right before we were leaving for Thanksgiving dinner and I wanted to cover up my cream colored sweater so as to not to take a chance of showing up at the in-laws covered in chicken shit.

This dress features a bright yellow chiffon dress with billowing sheer sleeves, and frilly chiffon skirt. The dress is lined in light yellow.

Two small yellow strings at the waist support a 1.75" wide leather-backed belt which is covered in pink and yellow rhinestones pearls, beads, and gold thread.

While preparing the launch of my website, I have also set up an Etsy store! How much fun I am having!!!

I have been super busy and haven't updated my blog recently, so I'm getting back on it!

Here's a new item!

Vintage 1960s GLAM MOD Silk Formal Shift A-Line Dress/Gown in Robins Egg Blue with Bows

This is a charming 1960s shift or A-Line dress in Robin's egg blue in Vintage Size 10.

This dress is adorned with seven matching bows which go down the front center of the dress. The back of the dress features a pleated design to the upper back area. The dress is lined above the waist on the inside.

Closure for the dress is by a metal zipper and hook-and-eye up the back. The bow around the waist closes by metal snaps and hook-and-eyes underneath at the front. On the inside of the dress is a piece that wraps the bust area to hold up the dress with three hook-and-eye closures - the middle closure hook needs stitched back on at one end.

Sizing is approximately: Bust (on the inside closure) 30/31" Bust (on the outside seam to seam) 33/34", Waist 27, Back Length 35", Front Length 36"

As far as condition goes, I would say this is in good condition.

This dress just returned from a trip to the dry cleaners!

The ONLY imperfections I have found on this dress are two teeny pin-head sized rust stains on the back of one of the shoulder straps. Additionally, (and the reason I'm pretty sure this is silk) under each of the arms, at the armpit, the fabric has a small section of shredding (not uncommon for vintage silk) about 1" long. Additionally at the bottom back, at the left seam there is approximately a 6" long (up/down), about 1" thick section of shredding. Neither of these is really noticeable and wouldn't be so if the dress was being worn. I got the best picture that I could of the largest section.

The dress comes pressed from the dry cleaner, spotless and free of any lingering "vintage smell"! It smells fresh and clean, pressed, and ready to wear the moment it arrives!

I cannot find a designer label, but I did locate a union label inside (see photos).

I am working on having the site redesigned to include a store. In the meantime I have been selling some vintage clothing and vintage crafts (and a few designer finds) on EBay. I had added a tab at the top of my blog to easily shop my ebay store.

This is an absolutely GORGEOUS off-the shoulder vintage party dress from the 1950s in lemon yellow and coral sherbet color with ruching at the bodice.

Vintage Stunning 1950s Party Prom Cocktail Dress Lemon & Coral Chiffon Fred Perlberg

This dress has a layer of chiffon on top, a crinoline underskirt, and a yellow underlining. The lemon yellow chiffon skirt if very full and flowing.

The "V"-neck bodice shows a gradient of four colors: Lemon, Coral, Peach and Vanilla. The back of the bodice shows a modestly plunging "v" as well. Closure for the dress is by a metal zipper and hook-and-eye up the back.

Sizing is approximately: Bust 34-35, Waist 26-27, Length 29

The second favorite item of mine, which I am sadly parting with because my feet are too fat for them *sob*... They aren't vintage, but very retro style. They have been sitting in my closet for about 5 years now. Once in a while I take them out and look at them with love, maybe try them on again, take a couple of steps and then curse my hooves. Yes 6.5 is a small foot, but 6.5 E is a WIDE foot. Hmph. So, I've decided it's time for us to go our separate ways. It's time for my beloved shoes to to to a nicer, thinner and cuter 6.5.

These are brand new, never worn, and in the box. These are a size 6.5 and are not sold anymore.

DEAR LORD... Who are these people? I assume a British movie star or someone with whom I am unfamiliar, but if you like to look at vintage that makes you absolutely cringe... this is the article for you. The article claims that while the girl on the right looks all wrong, the mother (left) looks chic. I agree. If she's dressed for Halloween... FAIL.

The Kitsch:

"The reason for Kate [Moss] and this whole group of women I found that someone named 'waifs' was because before that, a lot of women were getting breast implants and doing things to their buttocks. It was getting out of control. I just found something so distasteful about all that," he explained.

Ah yes... presenting an image of women with large breasts and curvy bottoms is distasteful when it convinces young women to go get plastic surgery. What is not distasteful, however is presenting an image that promotes anorexia, bulimia, and drug use.

I did a little research on the above comment, "that someone named 'waifs'". According to merriam-webster.com the first known use of the word "waif" is the 14th Century and the probable origin of the term is Scandinavia. And in quite the paradox, the definition they give includes, "a stray person or animal expecially: a homeless child."

So, basically this "someone" to whom Klein is referring, was basically saying that his models looked like starving homeless children. Now that's something to brag about.

The latest fad that's taken over city folk is the portrait motif. Be it on clothes, jewellery or bags, this motif is favoured for its simple, vintage and chic look.

This is a formal tea length gown in ivory. The dress features silk spaghetti straps with bronze colored sequin accents and an amber silk bow for the finishing touch. The gown has a zipper back closure.

Vintage Aqua Blue Draped Gown w/Rhinestone Neckline to Feed My Addiction

Yay! Photos of the a new gorgeous vintage gowns I acquired today.

The highlight of this aqua tea length gown is the stunning rhinestone neckline that is also the strap that holds the dress up, with zipper to the back.

The layered draped front creates a slit to the front. This gown is designed by Rose Taft for Couture Fashions. It's in really good condition with only a few small stains.

I'm trying to figure out the date on this one. If anyone knows, please let me know!

Finally... We Have Sasuke... The Ninja Halloween Costume

Over the weekend I finally (almost) completed the Halloween costume for my step-son; the final costume of the three I had to make for the minions. He wanted to be Sasuke... a Japanese anime ninja from something called Naruto which he thinks is the greatest. Sasuke, yes Sasuke (apparently pronounced "Sauce-K"), who I am sure probably all 9-year-olds are familiar with, like duh, but I had to do complex internet research on.

Wyatt as Sasuke - still need to hem sleeves and take up tunic length a bit

Not only that, but apparently Sasuke has gone through several wardrobe changes in his short (or long) animated life, so there's like a Generation 3 and a bad Sasuke, and etc. It was also a challenge trying to settle on which look he wanted.

I started with pictures researched from the internet, and finally he decided that this was the one he wanted to go for. Here's what the character looks like:

What I did first was ask Wyatt what colors each item was. LOL. Turns out it's white top, black pant, dark blue wrap, and a purple rope belt.

For the top and the wrap, as luck would have it, the costume faux satin was on sale for 50% off (about $1.50 a yard). Done! They were out of black in this type of fabric though.

For the pants, I purchased a matte black gauze fabric. It was on sale for a very low price, and it was the cheapest black workable fabric I could find for the pants. When I did a fitting on him of the pants, he said, "I'm wearing girl pants." Fannnnn-tastic. Once he put the entire outfit on though, both he and Trent realized that the material actually worked out well.

I used a basic costume pant pattern for the pants and altered them to fit him. The folds that are seen in the photo are where I folded the edges to cut out at the line for the small size. On multi-sized patterns I don't cut away the larger sizes from the pattern, that way they remain re-usable.

For the belt... they didn't have any rope in the decorator sections that looked right. And anything that I could substitute in it's place cost between $4 to $12 a yard. So... in the home decor section, I found a box of natural cording, used for draperies, at 79 cents a yard. I purchased 3 yards and a box of purple dye:

To cut the wrap, I took the blue fabric folded in half, and made a semi-circle... the old school method with a piece of twine and chalk secured in one spot.

Could I have folded the fabric in half again and done a quarter circle? I retrospect, yes. LOL.

I got a surprise visit from Mr. Bubbles while I was taking a break.

Wyatt as Sasuke - back

I made the emblem on the back (there is a name for it. Wyatt knows it. He corrected me a few times when I referred to it as an "emblem" so, I won't even pretend to remember what the heck it was) with fabric scraps saved from the tunic and Jack's Halloween costume:

Jack had been happily running around in his costume for half the day. Wyatt was pretty jealous. The reason that these photos show Wyatt wearing and "almost" finished costume that still needs some hemming and tweaking is that it was almost their bedtime here, and he started to get a little down in the dumps about it because he had hoped to run around in his costume too. So I quit sewing for the night and let him wear it for the last hour he had before bed, in "as is" condition. I didn't have the heart to keep it from him any longer.

That kid was so darned happy the rest of the night. I got hugs and praises on my sewing skills from him. He mentioned several times how perfect the costume was. I've never made children's Halloween costumes before, but it was such a warm, self-satisfying feeling to see them that happy because of something I did. They've already started placing their orders for next Halloween. Guess I did okay! :) :)

I was at the fabric store last weekend to pick up batting for the "Manly Moose Vest" (see The Vintage Manly Moose Bubble Vest for my Hubby is DONE! whoohoo!), and as I was passing a table of fabrics which were on sale, I spotted this:

This is an absolutely gorgeous fall suiting, in navy and white check with a pink line running through it both directions.

The fabric is 60" wide. And as you can tell from the picture it has a lot of texture to it and is thickly woven.

Not knowing what I was going to make with it, (skirt? dress?) etc, I went ahead and bought three yards of it hoping that my options are open.

I purchased it in store at Hancock Fabrics but I can't find it at the store online, so I am really glad I grabbed it while I could in case this particular fabric was on sale because it's about to go bye-bye.

I'm trying to decide what the best garment would be to make with this beauty. I think I'm leaning towards a skirt or dress (1 piece? 2 piece?) but I'm open for ideas!

I have to make a Sasuke Ninja Costume for the last of my minions before starting this project for myself, but I would love to go ahead and decide what it will be used for.

The Vintage Manly Moose Bubble Vest for my Hubby is DONE! whoohoo!

Last night, into the late, as promised... I finished the vintage oh-so-manly moose bubble vest for my dear sweet Trenton. Sigh.

In what was only a couple more additional hours of frustration, screaming and throwing things after my sewing machine refused to stop scooting around the desk and the fabric refused to stop scooting around under the needle, here is the final outcome:

Sewing a Quilted Manly Moose Vintage Bubble Vest for my Hubby

This weekend I started (and almost finished) making a quilted "bubble" vest for my husband. I started out with the following vintage pattern:

This pattern is from about the late 70s. I actually found the fabric first (as I wrote about in an earlier blog) then set out to find something to make with it from in the thousands of patterns in my vintage pattern collection. The version on the left, that the man pictured is wearing, is for pre-quilted material. The version on the right (the lady) is for do-it-yourself quilted fabric. I obviously did this version, if you gathered from the blog title, but decided to alter it somewhat. Also, I did add the pockets from the version on the left (even though the pattern for the version I was making didn't include the option).

What's really cool is that this pattern was still in the original factory fold and had never been used. This created a dilemma for me. I hate cutting into vintage patterns, but I don't feel as guilty about it when they are from the 70s, and frankly it wasn't going to be in the factory fold anymore after I opened it, and my husband convinced me to save time and just cut the darned thing. After starting on this project, I am glad that I did.

The fabric that I chose, I am completely in love with. I'm not generally a big, manly, hunting-color, moose scenery loving, kinda gal, but it is honestly one of the most realistic prints I've seen and the colors and scenery are absolutely gorgeous.

What's neat is that this fabric wouldn't generally be a great apparel fabric. But it is a good quilting fabric. And since this vest is quilted I was able to turn it into an apparel fabric. This fabric can be purchased here:

Incidentally, I took the following two photos in order to demonstrate how these pattern markings (the diamonds) were marked on the pattern pieces. Notice how the diamonds actually go outside of the pattern cutting line? I have noticed on several blogs people giving tutorials on patterns where they are cutting the notches INTO the seam allowance. Even on modern patterns where the diamond is shown going into the pattern lines, you should always cut the notches as diamonds outside of the cutting line. Don't cut into your seam allowance.

The first step was cutting the general squares of fabric in order to make the quilted fabric from which to cut the vest pattern pieces out of. I used the two squares for the front and back which were provided from the pattern. It required cutting out (no joke) 8 squares of batting, and 4 squares of fabric. It took... a while.

After that, I got to transfer ALL of the quilting lines to the fabric. The instructions actually wanted me to hand baste all of the quilting lines. Um, hell no. I actually found it much quicker and easier to lay a yard stick across the quilting guide, on top of the line, fold the pattern piece snugly over the yardstick and then use chalk to draw a straight line along the side of the yardstick onto the fabric. I originally attempted this with a disappearing marking pen, but because sections of the fabric are both dark and light, neither the purple or the white marking pen showed the entire line on the fabric like the white chalk did.

Once all the lines were transferred to the fabric, I had to piece all of the squares of fabric and batting together. It ended up being 2 pieces of fabric and 4 thick pieces of batting each, which sat about 3 or 4 inches thick on their own. Trent, the super dude to whom I am married and was lovingly making this for, even looked at the prepared fabric lying there, in shock at the thickness. I received some odd looks and a few statements about how I could actually expect him to wear such a behemoth of an item. Remember the kid brother in Christmas Story?... "I can't put my arms down!"... yeah, I know what was going through Trent's head.

So anyway, I had to take this enormous freaking stack of fabric and batting...

... and then attempt to shove the monstrosity under the presser foot of my poor sewing machine:

Imagine for a moment that I handed you two big ol' dictionaries and asked you to sew them together. That is about how incredibly easy this was(nt!). Four bobbins, a spool and a half of thread, and a bushel of obscenities later, I ended up incredibly with something that looked like this. Wow:

So neat! I almost didn't want to cut into it. (Trent said he was really impressed with the outcome, seeing as how I had never quilted anything before in my life).

Here comes the even more fun part. If you noticed from the package of the pattern or any closeups of the pattern pieces, the pattern I have here, though it originally came in all sizes for men and women, or course was the version for a woman size small. So I got to do some fun pattern drafting and remake 99% of the vest pattern from scratch. The only piece that I used from the package, without alteration, were the pockets.

I used the poor aimee's method. The pattern paper that I used, seen here, is packing paper from a package which was shipped to me long ago. I un-crinkled it all and ironed the paper pieces out smooth. See my pattern weights? Granite counter-top samples from when my parents redid their kitchen. :)

The drafted pattern pieces were made custom from Trent's actual measurements.

Once the pieces were all cut out, I did a fitting and pinned them together on him, and made further modifications to the arm and neck-holes based off of actual fit.

The vest pieces were then laid out on top of the quilted fabric squares for cutting. Next I was faced with a very slight issue. I used the quilting guide from the package to cut the squares from. When deciding to do so, I checked them for length and width so as to be sure that they would be large enough to accomodate the man sized pattern pieces. It wasn't going to be an issue at all. Well... it hadn't occurred to me that a bit of length would be lost after quilting. DOH!

Luckily, only about an inch of length is being lost and it still was plenty to fit on Trent without it looking like he went shopping in the kids section.

So... cutting all of these out was hell. The stuff was so thick. I cut through it with pinking shears to fight fraying, and I literally was pressing one side of the scissors against the cutting table just for the strength to get through it all. I had to take a break when I was done.

I actually got quite a bit of sewing done on this thing over the weekend though.

For the inner lining, I used a beautiful hunter green color broadcloth. (This fabric can be purchased here Cotton Blend Broadcloth Hunter Green) Notice on the fabric description broadcloth is great for use for apparel, as a lining or for quilting. Bingo. lol. :)

The seams are bound with bias tape, so that the vest itself is actually reversible since no seam will actually show and all of the edges and batting have been covered up.

So, this is what I got done on this fun (and intense) project over the weekend. Here is another fitting, as shown on Trent...

Yes. My husband thinks he's Kurt Cobain.

The sleeves have not been finished with the contrast broadcloth yet, nor had the bottom of the vest. As you can also see in the photos there are no snaps along the front yet, and it's being held shut with pins.

What I am really happy about is notice how well I got the pattern to match up to the left and right of the snap front contrast? I love that aspect.

Also notice the pockets on the front of the vest. They are made so that they are flap top closure pockets, but on the sides they also open so that you can slide your hands in at your side.

I am already absolutely in love with this vest. It is turning out so wonderfully and Trent can put his arms down. :) I plan on finishing it tonight after I get home from work. So watch for more photos!

Also, I received fabric for my next personal sewing project: a dress made from an original vintage 1943 pattern.

I am having so much fun, I told Trent that, except what we get at the thrift store, the rest of our family's clothing is all coming from what I make us, either with vintage sewing patterns or by my own design.

Funny to randomly come across this article... back when I worked at the Cincinnati Art Museum, I used to use Cindy's computer upstairs in the costume department. OMG it is so neat up there. It was my most favorite place to be in the museum (other than the fact that I also remember it being the coldest place to be in the museum. lol). The costume collection (if memory serves me correctly) was the largest collection at the museum yet the smallest actually on display.

Kanye West Fashion Show Offers Swift Justice

Just a little over two years ago, Taylor Swift stood onstage, next to Kanye West, as she was humiliated in front of a live audience. This time, Kanye humiliated himself.

Kanye chose to make his debut as a fashion designer in one of the world’s fashion capitals, at the year’s biggest fashion event. If you want to make a spectacle of yourself, that’s a hell of a way to do it.

At the show, he offered nothing new or spectacular, though nothing terribly awful either. In fact, the consensus seems to be that the collection itself was just generally boring and ill-fitting.

Some of the pieces presented in the “ready-to-wear” collection weren’t anything that anyone could wear anywhere. Though it did appear to me that had there been time for a fitting, and time to attach zippers and buttons, and time to patch the gaping holes in the dresses, the line may not have been so bad and would have actually been “wearable.”

So why is everyone making such a big fuss? Because it’s Kanye, ever-so-famous for dishing it out. But go figure, when the tables are turned, he’s not so good at taking it.

The show, according to Kanye:

“This is my first collection. Please be easy. Please give me a chance to grow. This is not some celebrity s---. I don’t f--- with celebrities. I f--- with the creatives in this room, the amazing people who spend every day of their life trying to make the world a more beautiful place."

“The amount of people that tried to get me a celebrity f---ing deal. They said, ‘You need to do boot-cut jeans, or you won’t sell.’ Shut the f--- up ! Or Hedi Slimane in the motherf---ing Mercer, sitting with me, saying, ‘Stop giving them your ideas, Kanye. Do your own thing.’ Hedi Slimane! To feel so frustrated. And I thank anybody who came to this party, everybody who supported, everybody who believed, because people thought it was a joke, and maybe people still do, but I can only grow from this point."

Kanye stated in a 2010 tweet, “I've finally realized as long as you use profanity when you talk about art and fashion it's better accepted!!!”

There is a difference between using profanity while talking “about art and fashion” and using profanity while talking TO the people who will ultimately decide your fate in the field. I went to art school myself, one of the first things that you learn as an artist is how to take criticism, because you are going to hear it your whole life. You take criticism and use it in order to grow as an artist.

During his rant he also tries to downplay the celebrity status, yet it’s the only reason I can imagine he was able to get a debut fashion show in Paris at Fashion Week. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.

Yet, on the wings of all this, in an article by The New Yorker, Taylor Swift is quoted as saying that she and Kanye give each other high-fives when they see each other now. Isn’t this a coincidental twist of Kanye karma?

The best that Kanye could do, in my opinion, instead of lashing out at everyone else, is take a long hard look at his line and decide if it truly is something he really wants to pursue. If so, bite your tongue, come back next year and show them.

Upcoming Project... Sewing a Swank 70s Vest for my Moose Man

I'm so excited! As I stated in a post several days ago, I was trying to decide which moose fabric to choose for my hubby and what to make him with it. (See post Holy Manly Moose Fabric! We Like Moose!)

Trent wouldn't go for the 70s poncho (lol) so we settled on this lovely vintage pattern for a bubble vest from the 1970s:

This vest pattern is a size small so I'm going to have to resize it quite a bit. Additionally, I am doing version B on the right but with the patch pockets which are on the left (if it all works out as planned).

I ordered the following fabrics:

Trent really liked how realistic this print is. I have to agree with him. For the bands, pockets and collar I ordered broadcloth in hunter green:

I'm so excited to get started with this project and expect my fabrics to arrive any day now. What's going to be really interesting about this project is that the pattern includes a quilting guide for quilting the vest. I have never quilted anything in my life, so we will see how it goes. Hopefully Trent will end up with all the armholes in his vest.

I should be starting this project this weekend!
