It was 100 degrees in Ukiah yesterday, so I put a Dorothy Gaiter/John Brecher (Wall Street Journal) suggestion to the test and chilled down a couple of bottles of red wine to enjoy by the pool. (See their WSJ story here: http://tinyurl.com/lsgoq6)

It's clear that a big Napa Cabernet or Amador Zin, with alcohol numbers approaching legal drinking age, doesn't work when it's hot outside, chilled or not. And while a good cheap Pinot Grigio probably would've been great (especially considering the company at this particular pool party), I opted for the new 2007 Adobe Red from Clayhouse Wines. Sorry, it's not released yet, but I had two bottles leftover from a photo shoot.

Adobe Red is a Zin-based blend (41%), with smaller amounts of Petite Sirah, Syrah, Malbec, Grenache and Mourvedre. The alcohol is 14%, but it sure didn't seem hot to me after having been chilled for a couple of hours. And I admit, I even tossed an ice cube into my first tumbler, just to see how the flavors would hold up to a bit of dilution (and because it was really f***kin hot out).

The result? The effusive fruit flavors of the Adobe Red held up just fine to the chill, and to the ice cube. The red cherry and plum flavors, along with a bit of oak spice and vanilla, were all present and accounted for. And it went well with the enchiladas and tamales at the picnic table.

I probably won't give up my Pinot Grigio anytime soon, but a nice full-flavored red was exactly what the occasion demanded yesterday afternoon. Thanks John and Dottie!
