What is steampunk? Steampunk as an artform that incorporates Victorian images into a setting of of steam powered machinery. Steampunk invokes the style of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne. It has a most unique look to it.

Vintage Decorative Floral Elements

These pretty floral elements will surely add some specialness (is that even a word? lol) to your designs.

I could see these on a menu or an invitation to a dinner party. I've just recently discovered watercolor pencils. Oh, sooooo much fun! If you haven't tried them you must! They are way more economical than copic markers. You could use the watercolor pencils to add a hint of color to the flower petals and stems. Give it a try and you will be hooked on them. They are great to use on your handmade cards with your rubber stamps.

Vintage English Springer Spaniel and My Pink Twitter Button

Hi all! Hope everyone is enjoying this transition into fall. It's raining a lot here in the Pacific Northwest but we natives really don't mind.

Before I forget: I've received several messages lately concerning my little pink twitter button with the birdies. It is quite adorable, isn't it? I picked it up on another blog as a freebie and you can find it here. They also have a blue one.

While the image is a freebie on that site for use as a twitter button I cannot speak to its use beyond that. If you would like to use it other than as a twitter button you should contact her.

I just had a facebook request for images of dogs. Ask and ye shall receive!

English Springer Spaniel - gorgeous dog!

The English Springer Spaniel is a sporting dog used to flush out and retrieve game. The breed comes from England and has a lifespan of about 12 to 14 years, weighs about 50 pounds and stands about 20 inches tall. They are a family friendly breed, eager to please, quick learners and easy to train. And they do have lots of energy! They really seem to love children and get along well with other animals.

Ah, the luscious pear.

China is the world's largest producer of pears. Pears are a great source of fiber and vitamin C, the majority of which is found in the skin of the fruit. Pears tend to be less allergenic than most other fruits and that is why their juice is often the first juice introduced to infants.

The wood of the pear tree is often used to make high quality woodwind instruments and furniture, as well as for wood carving. Wood from the pear tree is also used to smoke meat because of its aromatic smoke.

Spooky Vintage Halloween Houses

According to estimates, Americans spend approximately $300 to $500 million a year going to haunted houses for Halloween. There are an estimated 3,500 to 5,000 haunted Halloween houses every year in the US. And according to a 2005 Gallup poll 37% of Americans believe in real haunted houses.

Vintage Perfume Bottles

Vintage perfume bottles are a hot trend in collecting. Just a quick look on ebay and you find vintage perfume bottles being sold for hundreds of dollars each.

These bottles remind me of my grandmother. She would fill pretty bottles with water and food coloring and set them on the window sills in her kitchen next to sprouting carrot tops and African violets. So simple and yet such a beautiful display. And best of all, I still remember it!

Vintage 1909 Baseball Songsheet

In honor of America's favorite pastime and the upcoming World Series I have a wonderful old song sheet cover for the 1909 song My Old Man is Baseball Mad, words and music by Edward Clark.

The first World Series was played in 1903. The New York Yankees have the most World Series wins at 27 and have played in the most World Series at 40. On the other hand my Seattle Mariners have never won a World Series let alone even played in one!

Vintage Cuckoo Clock

The cuckoo clock is a clock that strikes the hour with an emerging bird. These clocks have been made since the mid 18th century. Traditional cuckoo clocks are made of wood and are carved with leaves or animals and a little bird would emerge and call out the hour and every half hour. This type of clock comes from the area of Germany known as the Black Forest.

What could be more Halloweenish than the raven?

Ravens have followed people around the North American continent for centuries; they followed the covered wagons traveling west and hunting parties in the hopes of finding a quick meal. Ravens are among the world's smartest birds solving more and more complicated problems presented by scientists.

Breeding pairs of ravens hold their territory against all other ravens. Ravens are also known as acrobatic fliers often doing somersaults and flying upside down. It has been discovered that ravens understand cause and effects. A study in Wyoming found that ravens are drawn to the sound of gunshots in the hope of finding a carcass to eat but are not drawn to other loud sounds such car horns. (AllAboutBirds.org)

Oh gosh, I just love this time of year. It makes me feel like a kid again. I love that there won't be any more sweltering days, we tend to wilt here in the Pacific Northwest when it gets too hot! But the rains are coming tomorrow I hear. Big pots of stew and a fire in the fireplace. And, Halloween is just around the corner! Yea!

Halloween is that time of year when us big kids can be silly and goofy and its OK. Now how often does that happen? So here are some lovely and frightening Halloween images for the little kid in all of us!

Vintage Bluejays

Today I bring you the Steller's Bluejay, named after Georg Wilhelm Steller, who first recorded them in 1741. Native to the western portion of North America (and my backyard) these bluejays can live to be 16 years old! The Steller Bluejays of Canada have an almost black head and the further south they live the brighter blue heads they have.

I have developed a relationship with about 4 to 6 of these birds in my backyard. They are so fun! They recognize me and come to say hello every day and for the unsalted peanuts I give them. I have to admit they look kind of crazy with that tuft of feathers on top of their heads but they are so much fun and such a beautiful color.

I have no images posted to this blog from that site only a button for you to visit that site if you would like to find other scrapbooking type of sites. Vintage Tamarack

Hello everyone! Good to be back.

Today I'm sharing with you some of my Pacific Northwest beauty. This first image is of a tamarack tree. A few years ago I was traveling across the Cascade Mountains to eastern Washington in the fall and noticed that an entire forest was an orange color. The usually dark green fir trees looked as though they were dying. Then I asked my dad about it and he told me that those trees weren't the usual fir trees of our forest but tamarack trees. I had never heard of tamaracks but when traveling across the mountains and from a distance they certainly looked like all of the other fir trees or Christmas trees.

The tamarack are mostly native to Canada and their name is the Algonquian word meaning "wood used for snowshoes". A deciduous tree with very tough but flexible wood used for making snowshoes and other items where toughness was necessary. Tamaracks are also grown as ornamental trees and in bonsai in cold climates.

Vintage Stencil Designs

Stencils were used in colonial times to decorate the interior of homes. Since stenciling was time consuming it was usually just the wealthy who could afford such decoration. When stencils became widely available commercially homeowners used them to decorate the ceilings and hallways of their homes.

Now stencils are experiencing a resurgence in popularity and they are everywhere. Just about any surface can be stenciled. Stenciling with spray paint has become an art form in and of itself.

The Ostrich and Crow

Last week I was in Virgina City, Nevada and learned that I had just missed the annual ostrich and camel races there! Sounds like it would have been quite a hoot and was very sorry I missed a sight like that. Just the picture in my mind of these two funny looking creatures racing makes me chuckle!

The ostrich cannot fly and is native to Africa but can run up to 43 miles per hour! That's fast! Ostrich feathers are cherished throughout the world, their skin is used for leather and the meat is sold commercially.
