Once the hustle bustle and frivolity of the Christmas season is over here in Australia we move into ‘holiday mode’.  Think long summer days, barbeques, family visits, relaxing afternoons in the garden…

Take the time to prepare your outdoor areas for the entertaining and relaxation season (aka summer!).  Having a restful and enjoyable outdoor space doesn’t just make entertaining easier, it also gives us a much-needed energy boost and restoration to our senses.

So, right now you’re thinking “I need to know how to create a summer haven, I need one in my life!”!  Here are our six tips for creating a summer home entertaining area that you will not want to leave!

Lots of places to sit

You’ll need to make sure you’ve got adequate seating for your guests and keeping a store of folding chairs in the shed is a great idea for this. 

You also want to make sure you’ve got choices of outdoor seating for your family.  Table seating for dining (or working!), a couple of timber or iron benches through the garden for moments you just want to sit and contemplate, and comfortable outdoor chairs for reading or simply resting.

Quiet places for reading

It’s not all about entertaining during the summer, we also need time-out to relax, enjoy a ‘nanna-nap’, read that novel we got for Christmas, or to simply daydream.

Create a quiet corner in the garden with screening plants (planted or in pots), timber or metal privacy screens, or even a gazebo to give shelter as well as privacy.

Bring in some colour and décor

Bright outdoor cushions give an instant “voomph” to your plain outdoor furniture.  Make sure you choose outdoor fabrics as they’re treated to resist fading and moisture.

Rugs are a simple way to define a space, and outdoor rugs are no exception.  A rug under your outdoor table and chairs marks that area for eating, a different rug for your casual chairs and couches marks that area for relaxing and chatting. 

Crockery, jugs, and drinking glasses in bright, fun colours are a must to have on hand for summer entertaining.  If you’ve got a suitable undercover area why not pickup a dresser that can take pride of place on your deck to hold your new entertaining pieces!

Fun and funky plant pots add a touch of whimsy and personality!  Look for different sizes and shapes – mix your new pots with plainer pots for extra impact.

Painting your fence, verandah posts, or furniture is an instant freshen up for your outdoor and garden.  It also adds value to your property!

Bring your garden to life

Longer sunny days mean more time to spend in the garden.  Weeding, pruning, and adding mulch makes any garden look fresh and alive.  After you’ve done a tidy up do a quick assessment of spaces that need to be filled and take a trip to the local garden centre to pickup a few new plantings.

Lighting

One of the fun things about summer entertaining being able to comfortably spend long evenings outside enjoying great company and creating memories.  But good lighting is important!  A floodlight might be essential for security and safety in some areas, but softer lighting creates ambience and a party atmosphere.

Fairy lights and string lights are perfect for lighting up the garden.  Fairy lights drapes through an ornamental tree or shrub can look stunning and dramatic.  String lights are available in all sorts of light style and shape – string them along a verandah or wall to define a space.

Fire pit

A summer night without a fire pit?  We think not!  A fire pit can be used for cooking on, toasting marshmallows, keeping warm on a cooler evening, or year ‘round to extend your outdoor entertaining area’s season!

Greg Natale is one of our most famous interior designers worldwide, which is quite an achievement considering the depth of talent we have here - he is a multi-award-winning designer and one of the most-sought after for projects both in Australia and abroad. Greg produces interiors that are highly sophisticated with incredible attention to detail combining of colour, texture, and pattern to create something that is absolutely memorable.

YSG

A double-up win in the 2020 Australian Inerior Design Awards for YSG with top homours in both residential decoration and residential design categories. For interior design with a rebelliousness that challenges the senses yet is full of an energy that “celebrates whimsy and functionality” YSG interiors by Yasmine Saleh Ghoniem is a design studio that immediately comes to mind. The use of daring palettes, organic shapes, and the unexpected surprise of textural pairings creates spaces that leave an experience.

As humans we have an inherent need to remain connected to nature as an important aspect to our health (physical and mental) as well as our general wellbeing. We could rattle on until the cows come home about the health benefits of using indoor plants in our interior decorating and design, but using indoor plants and greenery isn’t just good for our lungs and mood it also makes our homes look good!

Using greenery and plants in our interiors is so important that there is a whole area of interior design dedicated to it! Have you heard of biophilic design? Biophilia means ‘love of nature’ and focuses on our innate attraction to nature. Biophilic design ties our inherent need to connect with nature in our modern built environments. 

This month we’re taking a look at how you can work some biophilic design principles into your home décor with some thoughtful homewares inclusions like amazing pots, indoor plants you can buy online, and of course how you can use some of our wall decals as the perfect backdrop!

The pot you use for your indoor plants is just as important as the plant itself. Pots are the décor to the natural element of the plant!

Local nurseries and garden stores don’t always have a great range of potted indoor plants for us to choose from, but looking online we have SO many more choices!

Interior Jungle have a huge range of indoor plants, including pet friendly plants which are important if you have pets that might be tempted to nibble or sniff anything that looks interesting!

Offshoot offer a carefully curated and considered collection of indoor plants and botanical accessories to enhance your wellbeing and bring joy to your homes and interior spaces. Well worth a looksie!

Kokedama and crystal air plants make beautiful additions to your indoor plant collections. The Indoor Oasis has a stunning collection and we’re sure you’ll find it difficult to choose which you love most!

Adding a ‘greenery’ backdrop

Ok, we know we’re biased here, but our wall decals make a GREAT backdrop to your indoor plants! Bondi Vet says that the French Bulldog is often described as a “clown in the cloak of a philosopher” because of their mischievous attitude hidden behind their sometimes stern face. We reckon that pretty much sums them up!

With great personalities and loving natures they make wonderful family pets … so it’s really no wonder that we also love to decorate with their likeness!

Decorating our homes for Easter is a pretty new ‘thing’ here in Australia, but it’s definitely a styling period that we are in love with!

There are SO many stores and small businesses (including us!) with amazing Easter decorations and tableware … we’ve been browsing and have collated some of our favourites:

Oxfam

All of Oxfam’s profits go to helping communities worldwide and the products that Oxfam sell are ethically sourced and produced as well. We particularly love the Painted Wooden Eggs in Oxfam’s Easter collection – each design has a story behind it. These would make such a lovely gift for all ages, but especially for children they would learn about other cultures and families at the same time!

Late autumn is the time to get our homes ready for winter! How often do you find that the sunny days of autumn all of a sudden (seemingly overnight!) become chilly, chilly winter days when hibernation feels a real option?!

Warm underfoot as well as soft and inviting to lie on to watch tv or a movie, rugs do the hard work in our homes. High pile textures are comfortable on your feet on even the chilliest of days!

This month we’re thinking about pretty things … and creating a pretty, girly space where dreams of bunnies, hearts and dandelions are made!

Here at Vinyl Design we love to design wall decals that suit all ages, tastes, and styles. But, it’s soooo much fun designing for the little people in our lives, girl’s rooms especially. This winter has been particularly cold across most of Australia and we bet that you’re just as ready as we are to say …. “Hello Spring!”.

Over winter our homes become our haven of warmth and protection from the dampness and chill that is waiting for us beyond our front doors. As we look to the end of winter and the beginning of the blossoming of spring we’re also eager to bring that brighter decorating inside our homes.

Here at Vinyl Design and Vinyl Living we’ve been following the trends for the upcoming season and picked some of our favourites that we saw at Decor+Design last month in Melbourne.

Design Influences

Our wider world is changing and has been in a state of change and upheaval ... this will reflect in our interiors trends. We’re going to be seeing a lot of experimental styles and designs, bright and bold colours, innovative materials, adaptable products, and dynamic patterns. We’ll be seeing vintage, handmade and bespoke ahead of the mass-produced pieces of recent times.

It’s about being authentic to you and styling your home in a way that brings happiness, a sense of wellbeing, and harmoniousness. Are you ready for this exciting new trend?!

Colours

The trend in colour is toward the colours of nature that instil a sense of calmness and tranquillity - colours that have their own richness and self-assuredness. We’re expecting to see the colours of nature in its gentleness: misty morning hues, stonewashed blues, dusky shades of rose, and pale fruity apricot tints. Mixing beautifully with the fresh crispness of mint, melon, and the warmth of rich cocoa.

These colours are beautiful and it’s certainly a trend that we’ll be embracing!

Our favourite finds

So, what have we found that embodies the sense of wellbeing and happiness that are foremost in the late trends for 2019 and early 2020?

For the budget conscious decorator, Target have a new handcrafted range. We’re particularly loving their new Round Cotton Jute Rug with Tassels and the faux leather Kali Ottoman which are both perfect for most rooms to add a touch of texture and warmth. While the Marble Jewellery Box or Gold Shell Trinket Dish will add a touch of natural glamour to bathroom or bedroom.

Always a favourite is Pottery Barn (and if you sign up to their newsletters, they have fantastic sales!) and this season is no exception! The new Living Edge Wood Hurricanes are stunning – made from hand blown glass and wood, each one is unique in texture, shading, and size. Also new this season is the Basilia Print Cushion Cover: made from lovely soft printed velvet this fabric is also manufactured using eco-friendly methods which do not generate any water, air or noise pollution.

For Aussie made and designed style that is all designed and manufactured in Melbourne you can’t not think of Bonnie and Neil – Aussie designers gone global! Their new range is stunning! We were hard-pressed to choose just one, so we settled on two: the Marguerite Amber Large Vase is hand painted by Bonnie onto glazed terracotta and the Marguerite Amber 60cm Velvet Cushion with a design by Bonnie hand-screened individually onto each cushion - each one definitely a one-of-a-kind pieces!
